This place is the real deal. Everything was absolutely phenomenal and I couldn't express that any further. Firstly, the restaurant and their vision is beautiful- they have a sort of mission to help train and guide young adults through the act of service and serving. They work at the venue, but they are also gain tangible skills that will help them further in the future- truly something special. Secondly, the food was hands down, some of the best food I've ever had. The ribs were fall off the bone and slathered in this rich, flavorful barbecue sauce, and the chicken didn't need anything, it was seasoned to perfection. The hot link was SO SO good- it was the best kind of spicy and hot (warning) and absolutely packed with flavor. But the second time I went the ribs were almost un-edible. And they don't give you refills, which is a problem for me because I have esophagus issues and getting down food. Tonight my fiance and I were in a celebratory mood, so we decided to go somewhere to eat that we had not yet explored. We decided to try Fresh Soul. What a great idea! Having lived in Memphis, TN, I have always been spoiled by amazing soul food and barbeque. I can assure you that Memphis has NOTHING on this place! I got the two ribs, a sausage and a fried chicken leg, with corn on the cob, fried green tomatoes and cornbread. My fiance got the chicken sandwich, potato salad and beans. Both of us were so enamored with the food, we knew then and there that we'd be back. Even better than the food were the people working there. They were so kind and attentive. We had a great little server named Edee, and she was so anxious to please and so willing to share the mission of this restaurant with us, which was even more appealing than the amazing food! Operating as a nonprofit through the community-focused Spokane Eastside Reunion Association (SERA), Fresh Soul is also running a teen job-training program for youth ages 14 to 18 to gain skills and experience to help obtain other entry-level positions after finishing the 16-week program. We were also approached by the owner of the restaurant, Michael Brown. He is so much more than a restaurant owner, in fact, my fiance said that in her eyes, he's a hero. I must concur. He has created numerous opportunities for the youth of the community around Fresh Soul. He has started up other programs to keep the kids of the community busy and learning, as well. As he prepares these kids to know their way around a kitchen, a basketball court or a tutoring desk, he also prepares them for life. After dinner, your server will tell you about the restaurant, and its role in the community. You will be given an opportunity to donate to the cause (no obligation whatsoever), and I would highly recommend it. After all, you'll have just eaten the best soul food of your life, so you'll probably be VERY willing to donate! I truly believe that there are special blessings in store for men like Michael Brown. We were passing through on our way to Montana and got to Spokane right around dinner time. Fresh Soul was just off the highway in the Altamont neighborhood--great little place with fantastic home style southern food. We had Catfish, ribs, baked beans, cornbread, potato salad, CRINKLE FRIES, and sweet tea and it was all FANTASTIC. Staff was lovely (they could have been mean as hell and I'd still go). Anyways, I been looking for southerner food or maybe some BBQ. When I saw the name of this place, I was glad to see some Soul in it, so I venture to it. I am giving them credit because up to this time they are the best ribs in this area. They are soft and they come off the bone. After I have been to 3 or 4 other places, they are the best yet. Now, the place is in a rather interesting area. Be ready to park on the street. It's a corner lot among some small businesses and homes. The place gave me the vibe the owner may be using the place to train young ones on how to conduct a business and how to have good work ethics. There were a lot of young people working there and well my server seem a little insecure about the menu and things I asked. The server kept going to a more mature lady who helped her and that to me was all priceless. I think it is important to lookout for our community and that is how this place represented soul to me. The food was not the best, but by far not the worst I had in this town. The rice and the beans... well not sure if it can be seen on the photo, but it was more like bean soup with a little bit of rice. I recommend this place if only for the community soul. read more

We went to Fresh Soul for first Friday gumbo. It wasn't the best gumbo I ever had, but definitely the best spokane area gumbo. Lots of meats, a little skimpy on the seafood, but it was still good. The hubs had the fried chicken with a side of Mac and cheese and corn on the cob. He said it's better than most places, not the best he's had...but good. Juicy and tender with great seasoning and a good Crispy crust. The only thing we tried that we weren't keen on was the ribs. The meat was really overdone and dry on the ribs we had. I'd not order these again. Maybe it was a fluke and we just got some dry ones. Anyway I like the vibe and I think it's a great addition to the neighborhood. This food was not good. How you call yourself a solid food place and don't use seasoning. Not a drop of seasoning on the fried chicken it taste like oily chicken skin, it was awful. the baked Mac and cheese barely any flavor, the baked beans are supposed to be sweet but what they did was make savory baked beans like chili beans and threw some pinnapple into it! Our first time at Fresh Soul, we tried a combo plate of ribs/chicken/sausage with sides of mac-n-cheese and greens and a plate of chicken and a side of potato salad... so goood we ordered a rack of ribs to go and got on the pre-order list for gumbo. The collard greens are so great - you absolutely must try them, and don't waste a drop of that incredible broth - just drink it, dang it. Good Lord, this place is good. On the recommendation of a couple of friends I decided to Check out Fresh Soul. I'm really glad I did. I went because I like the kind of food that they specialize in. Fried chicken and ribs and pulled pork and collard greens and cornbread and fried green tomatoes. I was not disappointed I chose to order all a cart because I wanted to try several different side dishes. Loved the collard greens just enough heat and a lot of flavor, tender and hot, just right. I also ordered corn on cob and cornbread. The cornbread was such a pleasure because it was not overly sweet but just right. It was moist and a perfect combo with my greens. My chicken was crispy and crunchy on the outside and hot and juicy on the inside. My only disappointment was they didn't have fried thighs. The menu noted that their gumbo is only available on the first Friday of the month so you can be assured that I will be back for gumbo. I also noticed as I left, that on their marquee on the front of the building was peach cobbler! What an enticement. Fresh Soul Gets five stars for food and one less for service because the wait staff seems very young and inexperienced. But I suspect that will change As they get more and more confident. read more

The best soul food you can find in Spokane. It's all made from scratch! I was transported back to My roots in Georgia - every bite was better than the last. We shared the Spokane meal, and the ribs melted off the bone, the Mac and cheese was so light and there was no fuss about it! Oh, and the cornbread- MUST TRY! Not o my that, this place offers more than food...it's a non profit that benefits our youth! Putting our youth through kitchen programs, giving them jobs, and teaching them things like how to open and manage a bank account. We were served by a wonderful young lady, and the management stopped by to chat with us and when I asked for more information on the restaurant she did not disappoint! We were handed a lovely trifold flyer/pamphlet about their restaurant and the services they offered. I left full, happy and once I found out they accepted donations, I was quick to do so. We finally tried this place. We'd been wanting to for awhile and it didn't disappoint. Not only do they serve great food, they also have a great mission. Fresh Soul aims to train and employ youth and empower them to make a difference for themselves and their community. Sera is also run by the owner of Fresh Soul and provides after school tutoring and a basketball camp. Now to the food. It was on point! The corn bread was the BEST corn bread I've ever tried. The beans were perfectly seasoned with a hint of sweetness (pineapple). The ribs and chicken were also terrific. Wow! This place was amazing. Catfish was fried with corn meal and perfectly at that. Not greasy, just crispy and oh so flavorful. The red beans and rice made me want to weep. It's been so long since I've had them cooked to perfection. And did I mention the sweet tea was perfect? Not over-sweetened it was great. I love the SERA Special #8. I get very delicious cornbread that is like cake! Then there's 3 ribs in the best barbecue sauce I have ever tasted! I get the sides of baked beans and macaroni and cheese. The baked beans are like 'gourmet' with pineapple chunks! The macaroni and cheese you can tell is 'from scratch!' I've also tried pulled pork sandwich that was very tender. The next item I wish to try is only offered First Friday of the month: Gumbo! Looking forward to my Fresh Soul picked up as "Take Out." Bad experience. Tried to order family meal but had two folks allergic to potato salad and manager would not let us substitute French fries. We decided to go elsewhere and manager insisted we pay $5.44 for the two teas that we didn't even drink. My husband and I decided to go here because he is from the south and since we moved here hasn't found really anything that hits home. I ordered a burger and fries and I felt like the waitress was rude because she said "really" when I asked her to make it with no veggies. Seven of us stopped in for lunch on the recommendation of a classmate and everyone absolutely loved it. The fried chicken was juicy and crisp without being over breaded. The pulled pork was falling apart and seasoned amazingly. The ribs were fall of the bone. Their potatoe salad was rich and creamy. The absolute best part of the visit was the collard greens. They weren't bitter but full of flavor without a whole lot added to them.
