The chicken was disgusting no offense but learning how to put spice and something that taste like down south cooking is what we people from the east side wanted. I ran into Michael Brown by chance on Father's Day this year as I was out with my daughter. He came up a talked to me about Fresh Soul as well as it's community involvement. He suggested my daughter and I stop by and I told him I would. As he left, he did not look convinced that we would. That Wednesday, my daughter and I stopped by for lunch and he was there. He and the rest of the staff greeted us graciously and made us feel very welcomed. Upon walking into Fresh Soul, immediately, it felt like home! The lady who sat us was beyond kind, as was the young man who served us. I ordered the catfish which was second to none! Along with Fries and red beans and rice. The meal did not disappoint. My daughter had Chicken legs and rice. Everything was absolutely delicious. The icing on the cake for me was that they had Kool Aid on the menu and I definitely indulged. Not only was the staff welcoming and inviting, but the patrons were equally inviting. I had a chance to speak with a gentleman who I exchanged contact information with. This man was the salt of the earth!! This felt like community, not only will I frequent this place regularly, I will also seek to get involved and help out any way I can. First off, prices have been raised a lot. Second, mac'n cheese has been discontinued. Never made sense that it was only offered on Fridays & Saturdays. My friend & I met here for lunch. She had a cheeseburger with the works and fries. Looked fabulous and my friend said it tasted great! She's very critical, so I know it was good! I tried the catfish dinner. Nice big crispy tender filet, red beans & rice (very delicious) and a too tiny little piece of sweet fluffy cornbread. The price for this dinner went from $15 to $18. While I really enjoyed it, it will be awhile before I order it again. Maybe if there was an adult sized piece of cornbread? The fish had a nice crunchy coating and was soft and tender inside, with a mild sauce, the roll was soft and fresh, a delicious sandwich. The fries were hot and tasty. I can't speak highly enough about this place. This restaurant isn't just a restaurant but it gives kids a great opportunity. They do job training that not only teaches kids practical skills like having a job, budgeting, interview skills and, mentoring. It also gives them a purpose and a reason to have pride not only with themselves but their community. It's a small place that has a big heart. Walking in you are greater and sat at a table. Brought waters and your other drink orders are taken. I got their sweet tea which was sweet but not overly so. We ordered their gumbo special that runs once a month and I believe their number 7. The food came out fast and looked delicious. The gumbo was loaded with crab sausage in a thin broth with rice and other goodies. The number 7 had ribs, sausage, chicken with, corn bread and two side. We got the homemade potato salad and french fries. Everything was delicious. The ribs literally fell off the bone. The chicken was hot and crunchy and the sausage was awesome. The gumbo was amazing. Great flavor and super fresh The cornbread was like and airy and packed with flavor. It was a fun and fantastic experience. The service was spot on and the food so tasty. I will definitely be back. We called in to make an order one night. They asked for our credit card info which seemed kinda strange. I can't think of one other restaurant that does that. When we got there, there were 2 kids working in the front that seemed to be really new. They were doing their best, but the vibe was so tense. We stayed in the front and waited for our order. My husband decided to get a milkshake and the flavor he ordered was no longer in season. The employee got yelled at for not knowing that. We got a milkshake anyways cause we felt bad. I mean the lady just ripped into the kid. It was so uncomfortable. I go to look at the pies cause the meal we ordered came with a pie. So I'm asking the woman in the back about them and she seems to not want to help me. She tries to give me different parts of pies they had already opened (I don't know how long those have been there) seemed unsanitary. She yelled at the other worker for not communicating we were the order with the pie. Just belittling that employee in front of us. We both felt horrible. If we didn't already pay for our food we would've walked out upon the first yelling. As we were getting ready to leave one of the employees answers the phone and the guy in the back starts screaming and cussing at the employee that he should know not to answer the phone. It was just horrible. We felt bad even eating the food we picked up. This is supposed to be to be a positive environment for the youth.... It definitely was the opposite. read more

This was my first time I ever been to fresh soul, I got a combo meal and the potato salad was ok, I loved the red beans and rice, the hot links were nice and spicy, the chicken was alright but seemed flavorless and the cornbread was nice and sweet. All in all was good but my ribs seemed a tad dry even with the sauce, the meat fell off the bone but it was a tad chewy and was hard to chew for a bit. Crispy thin corn meal coating over a large, firm, moist, fresh catfish fillet. Probably the best fried fish in town! I do wish the fries were cooked a bit longer. I will request that on my next visit. A pleasant place to eat with bright colors and friendly happy folks working there. I will be trying the ribs very soon. Why aren't more people eating here? Attempted to order fried chicken but they had sold out. SOLD OUT! That's incredibly great for them but was sad for us. Luckily they stilled had plenty of other tasty items. I ordered jambalaya, mac n cheese and corn bread. And my dining mates got the ribs, beans, corn and fries. The corn bread was rrrrridiculous! So soft and sweet and the best cornbread I've ever had. Jambalaya was full of sausage and shrimp. It needed a little more kick, but that is what the hot sauce on the table is for. I tasted my hubs ribs and was close to trying to steal a whole one for myself. The bbq sauce was sweet, smoky and absolutely divine. We look forward to going back to get our fried chicken. Friendly neighborhood atmosphere in the restaurant reminds me of a beach fish 'n chips restaurant (not the decorations, just the size, layout, laid-back vibe). We both had the pulled rib meat sandwiches and fries, which were great. Definitely put the provided coleslaw on the sandwich. The crinkle fries were well seasoned with a variety of dipping sauces available. Not being from the south, I was anxious to try the collard greens. We both enjoyed them. Stumbled across this place and decided to give it a try. Food was very good, and the staff was incredibly friendly. Only draw back was the price. Looking at old menus on yelp, it appears things have increased substantially over the years. My combo plate was about $25 and a large bowl of gumbo was a little over $25, bringing lunch for two people to $75 after tax and a good tip for our friendly server. And given the price, the portions were definitely on the small side.
