We discovered Betty Jean's BBQ this past weekend. Wish we had known earlier! The food was sensational. Although they identify as Carolina cooking, it was pure Texan to me! We had pulled pork and brisket sandwiches, ribs (OMG!), and sides of hush puppies, slaw, and baked beans, all super good. When you go, give the BBQ a chance to shine -- don't use red BBQ sauce. Best BBQ ever. Ribs are so tender, well drained and the sauces are excellent. Sometimes I don't even add extra sauce, they are THAT GOOD. Anyway, I will be back. Service is always friendly and almost like a family feeling. This is the OLD place for the Thai food restaurant but the dining area is remodeled (one remnant left from their legacy). Restrooms are clean, tables and chairs new and solid. Oh, the coleslaw is fresh and very good though some customers might be stuck on the older style. I really felt like I was getting the freshest vegetables. The BBQ Baked Beans are really good too since some of the meat is stewed right in with them. The pulled pork tacos hit just right. Service was off. Not sure if they were short staffed, but not very friendly when we walked up to order. Felt like we're a nuisance. Friendly service. They were out of bbq chicken even though we got there when they opened. Something about the fair??? So thinking they sent the chicken to the fair and didn't keep any for the store? A couple of us had sandwiches, which were good & the coleslaw was good too. Ribs & hush puppies were very good too. Nice meaty ribs too. But I really didn't care for the taste of the bbq sauce on the side. And, since baked beans are one of my favorite foods, had to try that. The first bite was great, not too sweet & perfectly cooked. But the more I ate, the less I liked them. They got spicier (which I liked) but a bitterness developed, maybe too much molasses? They were out of chicken so I got brisket, which was fine with me. The lettuce part of the salad is about 2 handfuls of greens. They have a bottled Caesar in a cup on the side. Also croutons and a few onions. For this-- the vegetable part-- $14.50. That my friends is too much. I am not one to complain about a $20 sandwich. I think it's fine the plate of meat with 2 sides costs what it does. The salad price is not in line. Now added to that $14.50 is another $2 for chicken and $3.50 for brisket. Now I have a $17.50 salad. Nope. Pricey. Bathroom grade: A- 2 single serve gendered restrooms, clean, ADA accessible . They have a male and female sign left over from the prior Thai restaurant. have gone to this place several times now and really do consider it the best Smokehouse and BBQ joint in Spokane County! I, 10/10, recommend trying it out. The Owners Omar and Dee are hands down some of the nicest people you will ever meet! The story of their business is amazing to hear about from their perspective. They are a true family-run operation and service up authentic North Carolina cooking! Now! The Food... it is fresh, succulent, and delicious! Their tacos aren't on the list of favorites you can include in this review but WOW! they are good! I am a huge fan of their brisket and pulled pork and like ordering the 3 meat option (the chicken is normally my other meat choice with the brisket and pork) and add sides. The Slaw, Okra and Beans are so good! while you're at it you have to order some of those hush puppies too!! The meat has a great flavor and you can enhance that with the sauce if you want but it isn't required to make the food taste good - their cooking does that on its own! I realize I didn't have ribs, but what I did have was less than par. What I was hoping to be amazing, turned out to be underwhelming. As it is, this place serves House breaded chicken and House made french fries. From my experience this is not something you just jump into. There's a process that needs to be done in order to have decent food come out. While my chicken was hot, the breading on the chicken was flavorless. The bun was a McDonald's sesame seed bun and the french fries were not done correctly either. They were soggy wilted and burnt. Definitely not worth $23. From what I can gather, they just cut up potatoes and threw them in the deep fryer. That is not the correct process for cooking fresh french fries. The potatoes need to be cooked first and then deep fried upon ordering. Growing up in the restaurant business, I know how, this stuff works so I believe I know what I'm talking about. Also, I find the takeout fee to be ridiculous as well. $1.50 I sure hope you're not charging me $1.50 for the bag and then expecting a tip on top of it. As NC peeps, we've tried every BBQ joint in town looking for a taste of home. This is absolutely the best. We tried most of the meats and all were excellent! A few of the sides weren't as great but likely because they are family recipes and not what we're used to. The mac n cheese is exactly what you would get at a southern church potluck. Very old school but a tad too spicy for my taste (I'm a lightweight when it comes to spice). Beans and fried okra were very traditional. Corn is smoky more than sweet. Coleslaw is freshly made but could have used a bit more dressing. Flavor was great though! Only disappointment was the hush puppies. They were kind of like a cross between cornbread and a cake donut. They had a hint of cinnamon? Not a normal hush puppy. Service was great and the place was clean and had a good vibe. I would give it 4.5 out of 5 if that was an option. read more

First impression was meh, second visit was the same on my third I will give it another try and update as necessary. The flavors are there, but not so much the execution. Brisket is always on point along with the BBQ sauces. Cole slaw no issues nor the rolls or sides for a matter of fact. Hush puppies could be golden brown and not dark brown, but the flavor is there. I would also like to suggest pickling the onions with the pickles instead of raw onions. Pulled pork though, strong on the salt, and on the smoke I guess. The ribs are just not hitting, flavor is perfect but it's not tender. I don't wanna gnaw and pry the meat off the bone, it was dry. Still waiting to try the chicken but I'm not too sure it's gonna hit either. Customer service could use some etiquette. I will leave it at that. read more

The Best BBQ I've had in spokane so far. The sides were great. The fried okra was great. The pulled pork and brisket were cooked just right and seasoned well enough. The sauce is what really brought it together. Large portions you could prob split with another person and be pretty satisfied. You can tell the food is made with care and love for it, rather than the dead inside food offerings you find at alot of places in spokane with zero to no flavor. Just overall a good experience. Not sure how new this place is but their systems could use some work. Took almost 15 minutes to place an order (with only two groups in front of us) and 40 minutes to get our order. Place was full of young people with only one adult looking person in sight. More training perhaps? That being said, once the food came out it was pretty good. Great variety of meats and sides. Between my wife and I we tried the big five. I had brisket, chicken, and ribs with beans and mac and cheese. She had the pulled pork and sausage with coleslaw and hush puppies. All of the meats were well smoked but not overly so. Super juicy with a light rub and a sauce that was not too sweet or too spicy. Pulled pork was nice because it was tender without being cooked to mush. Hush puppies were bomb! Crispy outside, moist & light inside. Coleslaw was generic with little flavor so it could use some work. Beans, too were just average but not bad. Mac & cheese was terrific--really cheesy and probably house made (no generic canned cheese sauce here!). Loved the chicken. It was a hind quarter so it takes to smoking well. Since I'm a value diner, I could have used the protein portions to be 20% heftier for the money we spent but I have to constantly remind myself that this is the world of 2022. Hopefully next time (and there will be a next time) that their staff and systems are worked out so food will come out quicker and in order. read more

Absolutely love this place. Came in and there was only a few people, we ordered Ribs, pulled pork, coleslaw and hush puppies. The flavor on the ribs was delicious, it had a nice thin crust and melted in my mouth, I dislike coleslaw as a rule but the flavor and the consistency was very good. Hush puppies were crisp on moist on the inside and you can order cinnamon butter , which I recommend. The pulled pork was also nicely prepared, nice and salty but not too salty, just the right combo. We will be back soon and is the best BBQ in Spokane. Also, their music is 70's and 80's. read more

Excellent authentic old school BBQ. After a few trips, I've tried all the meats. The brisket is the shining star but the rest are all very good. The traditional sides are also very good. Why bother ordering ahead of time? They didn't even acknowledge the mistake. The order was placed at 4:30 w/ pick-up at 5:05, long before the dinner rush. A 10-minute trip turned into 45 minutes! It's the same when you eat there, it's as if they don't care. It took a while to get our beverages and then we WAIT. Watched the people that came in after us get their food and they ordered basically the same thing. So, we grabbed the young waitress and asked about our food. She looked a little confused and asked our order number. Long story short, they lost our ticket and had to rush to make food. Food was good but fries were a little under cooked, we had the Poor Boy and Pulled Pork sandwich with Fried Pickle Appetizer. Fried Pickles actually came out last but were pretty good. I've been wanting to try this restaraunt for a while. We went for an early Wednesday dinner. The only downside is they were out of the Wednesday special. I wasn't even disappointed. I had a whole menu of good choices left. We ended up choosing fried pickles, chicken dinner and the fried shrimp. The fried pickles were so crispy. I was surprised by the excellent texture and lack of any mushy or oily pieces. At the end of the meal around an hour later the fried pickles were still crunchy. That's good food. The chicken was so delicious. I didnt choose sauce on it because the way it came was already excellent. The hushpuppies were awesome. They were different than I've ever had them. You'll have to try to see what I mean but they are a repeat order for sure! The coleslaw was nicely dressed and the dressing is clearly either modified from a purchased dressing or made in house. I really liked the flavor and the fact it wasn't excessive. Just light and tasty. Across the table they had the fried shrimp. The shrimp were a great size and the crunch was audible from my seat. The bbq beans were exactly what we hoped. They were just sweet enough and smoky enough. We can't wait to try other dishes and sides here. Also, the staff was incredibly attentive and polite. If you're the type who likes a certain level of service when you dine, you won't find better especially in casual dining. I was really surprised. A return visit is already in the works! read more

My fiance and I ordered a variety of dishes to see if we might use Betty Jeans to cater our wedding reception. We had not eaten there previously. I will start out by saying the Ribs seemed moist and sauce was good. We did not try the pulled pork. We had the shredded chicken: Very dry and tasted so strongly of smoke you can't taste the chicken. Could be most people like this smoked meat? Just not my taste? The Hush Puppies tasted alright - but seemed over fried. The coleslaw was dry and had very little dressing. The Chicken Nuggets were over fried and dry. My fiance had the BBQ chicken and said it was dry, however he is very sensitive to dry chicken. My daughter warned me that I may not like this food "style", she ate at the Betty Jeans at the Air Force Base and liked it a lot. Could be this Southern Style is not for us. It's a bit understated from the street side. Big sign, little store front. Once your in, any questions or worries you may have had about the place disappear, except "How long have you been here?"
