My absolute favorite bite to eat in Berkeley (tied with Mezzo)! I've been consistently going ever since I started school and I quite literally cannot count how many times I've gotten freshroll so far- about once a week on average during the school year. Their fresh rolls are amazing and a healthy, filling option (if you get 2). Favorite is the chicken + NamNam sauce. ($5 each) Banh mi's are quite decent and a good option for something that's easy to eat when you're on the go. Both the spicy porker and chicken banh mi options are good. (~$10 each) But the absolute love of my life from here has to be the Spicy Porker bowl. It literally brightens my day. You can choose different bases and sauces, but I get the vermicelli noodle base (or white rice) and NamNam sauce, and I love it. The bowl itself feels indulgent, but is well balanced with different vegetables and a fantastic flavor profile. Highly highly recommend. It's $14, and the portion is generous so it's super filling. (Tip: get sauce on the side unless you want a LOT of sauce on top, which sometimes, I do) Limited seating inside though, definitely a takeout kind of vibe. They still don't allow seating as of July 2021 but you are able to order via the screen or on the phone and only to go. The customer service is not great or I at least didn't feel it. I had no connection or inviting feel from the staff. Even for people who come and pick up their food are not greeted or ask the name. The food was great and had good flavour. I had two banh mi type of sandwiches and they were very good. It's difficult to come to a place where it's not welcoming or at least greeted well. Would I come back? I don't know. This is THE best spring roll I've ever had and the bowls here are excellent as well. The pork, shrimp, and chicken proteins are all great options. My favorite condiments are the fresh red sauce and the peanut sauce. I could drink the red sauce from the container it's that good. I like to get extra sauce to take home and eat with some home cooking. The spring rolls are a good portion and surprisingly filling - I typically order 2 and I struggle to finish the second one. They're stuffed to perfection and are so fresh tasting. The crispy fried wonton wrapper that comes inside each spring roll is the perfect crispy texture that really elevates the roll. I've never tried to build my own bowl here because I think the pre-crafted selections are good as is. My favorite combo of veggies would be Seoul Sensation and the North Shore bowls. read more

We really enjoyed the food, wouldn't eat it as a weekend treat but found it hearty and healthy. Things we would definitely order again: Spicy pork with rice: although the broccolini has some very tough stems and was not the most enjoyable, my partner felt it was tasty and nourishing. He ordered it with double pork but wouldn't double next time because the portion of meat is enough for a dinner. He liked the vinaigrette sauce, which is not spicy, both of us enjoyed it. He preferred pork to chicken. Chicken bowl: the chicken was generally tender although with some gristly pieces. It has a marinade that is quite sweet, and the meat is cut in long spearlike chunks that are much more than a mouthful, so eating it with a fork is awkward. I didn't like the sweetness of the peanut sauce and it had an unpleasant aftertaste for me, maybe the herbs? But overall would eat chicken bowl again. Tofu bowl: Great fried tofu with lovely taste and texture. I liked avocado as an addition in all the bowls. The citrusy sauce was pleasant although very tangy, not as good as the vinaigrette to my taste. I also tried the Nam Nam sauce, which tastes strongly of mayonnaise, has a little kick but not too spicy, and was great as a dressing on the greens. I left cucumber and pickled vegetables out of my bowl and regretted it because they are both really good, cucumber is in thin julienne strips and pickled vegetables were tasty (mostly carrot and radish I think). I also loved the added omelet. Things we might not order again: The garlic noodles were a little sweet, not that exciting or craveable and tasted a little too much of raw garlic (we got them without the furikake topping,maybe they are better with furikake) The house FreshRoll was nothing very special, we preferred the bowls (to be fair though, we ate it the next day so maybe it's good when first made!) I love that there is another healthy and filling option near campus besides Chipotle and Ladle & Leaf. You can customize your bowl with rice or salad, and choose all meat, vegetables and sauces. There are also default bowls if you don't want to go through that hassle! I got my bowl with the pork and a salad base with a Vietnamese chili sauce. I loved how fresh the ingredients were, but the only downside was the pork was a bit dry. My friend got the chicken bowl and he loved how much customization there is. Freshroll is one of my absolute favorite restaurants in Berkeley! After discovering their tofu banh mi, their sandwiches became my go-to takeout meal. There was a point when I would eat one of their sandwiches at least once a week. Sandwiches are one of the easiest on the go meals, but it can be hard to find solid meatless sandwich options that I'd be willing to pay for. I love using the Snackpass app to order ahead. The meal is almost always ready on time or early. As mentioned, I typically order a large tofu banh mi sandwich. I've had a fair amount of tofu banh mis and Freshroll's is definitely one of my favorites. The sandwich includes fried tofu slices, pickled vegetables, jalapeno, cilantro, cucumber, and namnam sauce. When ordering on Snackpass, I usually customize my sandwich so it doesn't include jalapeno or cucumbers. Part of what makes their banh mis so enjoyable is the way the tofu is fried. I think it adds a nice texture. Also, I love the namnam sauce! I think it must be some sort of sweet spicy (sriracha?) mayo. I really like the subtle spice and sweetness. I do think that there is sometimes a little bit too much sauce for my liking, but that might just be a personal preference. One sandwich is a little under $10, which is generally a little bit high for a sandwich, but $10 is typical for any meal in Berkeley (and might even be on the cheaper side). One large sandwich usually makes 1.5 to 2 meals for me, so I think it's worth it! I would recommend Freshroll to anyone looking for a quick meal, especially if vegetarian! read more

Delicious and healthy! I ordered the Ginger Basil Limeade (~$3) and Garlic Shrimp Freshroll with a peanut sauce (~$4.50) on a quick dinner date with friends. The Freshroll was...indeed a very fresh roll! Crunchy veggies, cold rice noodles, and the rice paper/wrap itself was not too sticky. However, I ordered the garlic shrimp thinking there would be more than what I got, or at least bigger shrimp than what I received. There were about 4 or 5 small quarter-sized shrimp total for an additional ~$1.50, so looking back now it was definitely not worth the extra money. The limeade was also fresh and delicious! It doesn't look the most appetizing coming out, but I wish the cups were larger because I could drink it all day long! Sweet and yummy. I tried my friend's chicken bowl, and the Namnam sauce was absolutely delicious on the chicken. It was a pretty large portion as well, so I'll probably get the same thing if I do go back again. I don't know why, but the two times I've been here it's been a miss. The first time I made my own bowl with garlic butter shrimp. I thought the shrimp would be hot/grilled but it was just cold. Then I tried the pork and it was extremely chewy, thin and hard. Maybe I just got a bad batch. Next time, I'll either get tofu or chicken and give them another chance. I like how you can build your own bowl with fresh vegetables, sauces, protein, and base. It's like a Vietnamese chipotle! They also have sandwiches, fresh rolls, and taro chips! It's a great, healthy option for a quick lunch on Telegraph which is great because most food on southside isn't the healthiest. I've been to the Freshrolls in SF and find myself craving it often. So it goes without saying it is pretty nice to have a healthier option on campus with all the other super over processed options around. If you feel like going light, but don't want to sacrifice favor and volume I would definitely recommend. New thing here are the Freshbowls, choose a base like rice, salad, green papaya (!!), then protein then flavor and sauces. I loved the combination - especially the Rising Sun with shrimp! Sad to say that my second experience here wasn't that great. Arrived an hour before closing and they were out of every meat. However, if I waited an extra 5 minutes, shrimp would be available. I decided to wait, because I was craving my protein. My order came out within the advertised time: vermicelli noodles, Saigon swag, Vietnamese vinaigrette, and shrimp. I even spent a little extra to get dark chips and extra sauce. Imagine my disappointment when I took my first bite and discovered that the shrimp tasted basically boiled, with no flavor at all. Also the flavor of their nuoc mam / vinaigrette wasn't as strong as last time -- and there weren't any cucumbers in my bowl. All the components for a great bowl of Vietnamese food were there, but none of the actual taste. I ate about half of the bowl before I decided the lack of flavor was enough for me. Additionally, the server forgot to give me my taro chips until I reminded her. And even then, the chips weren't as good as the ones I remember eating from their stores in SF. Overall I enjoyed my north shore chicken rice bowl with nam nam sauce. I didnt realize they forgot to add in the red cabbage until I left so I was at fault for not fixing my order. The chicken was tender and flavorful. I did feel like the ratio was too heavily on the rice portion though. Otherwise, the nam nam sauce really made the bowl so great since it's basically like a delicious aioli that has a little of a kick to it. It was interesting/little odd to see the pineapple cut into strips, but yummy nonetheless. The portion is pretty big for the price so it's a really good deal!
