I had underestimated this little place I would say most go to Men's Warehouse, but this is an excellent alternative. They have a wide selection of suits, color, and styles. My friend chose the cream colored linen suit, which coordinated well with a yellow vest underneath. We liked this place because they coordinate with major bridal retailer colors like David's Bridal, and Alfred Angelo. Fittings, payment and pick-up were no problem although there was a bit of a wait for a fitting room since there are only four. The place itself is tiny with no public bathroom. My only gripe was that I was randomly finding embedded and threaded female hairs through out the groomsmen's tuxes. Bad dry cleaning or were they somewhere they shouldn't have been :-D. I think it was the first one and plus with linen suits I guess that happens. read more

We had our wedding recently in May and we (my groomsmen, husband, and I) had multiple experiences with this shop.... First, we went in to place the orders for all the tuxedos probably about 4-5 prior to wedding day- my husband, 7 groomsmen, 2 kids, 3 family member. Yes, it was a huge order for rentals !! We were helped by Steven, who was amazing in helping us figure out colors to match our theme and explained the different types of tux and prices so that we are able to stay within everyone's budgets. Since kids don't get fitted until closer to wedding, I brought my son (the ring bearer) in April. The fitting went fine, the person that helped me mentioned that all our rentals should be in two days before the wedding date and we should pick it up then since it's prom season and it'll get busier if we pick up day before wedding. Two days before wedding- I received a text to pick up my son's tux and my husband received a text to pick up his. My husband went in to pick AND the order was not even complete ! My husband was missing pieces to his tux and my son's tux wasn't even ready. So why send me a text to even tell us it's ready ?! Also all of our wedding party that ordered at this location have gotten texts at this point. One of the groomsman pants was in the wrong size, another had a broken tie, another was missing a vest. So I called their number and complained, the representative told me "there is nothing I can do for you, just go into the store and speak to the manager" REALLY ?! So my husband went into the store and told them we needed the missing items latest is one day before wedding day in the morning since everyone have things to do and rehearsals. They told my husband that it would not be ready until the day before wedding at 4pm !!! Mind you, our rehearsals is 5pm on a weekday. We had to make arrangements for someone to pick up the tux but they ended up getting it in earlier in the day and MADE IT SOUND AS THOUGH THEY DID US A FAVOR !! I would never rent from this place again, the whole tuxedo rentals and pick up was probably the worst stress during our wedding. read more

My husband (fiancé at the time) and groomsmen got fitted at the Linda vista location and picked up tuxes in La Mesa. A few of the groomsmen had problems with wrong size pants and shirts. My husband had to go back 3 times to get the correct size shirt! Also, my husband was told his tux would be free, but when he went to pick up they did not honor that. All in all the tuxes looked good, But going back multiple times to get sized is not ok and not honoring the grooms free tux is not fair. read more

This little shop saved us a lot of time and drama for my wedding. After going to the men's warehouse where I experienced a shortage of variety and customer service I was very refreshed to come in to Friar Tux and see such variety and immediately be greeted. I had an appointment today with them to get my husband fitted for a suit for a wedding in two weeks. I was incredibly impressed with their customer service and their knowledge of their suits. My husband is very broad in the shoulder and small in the waist. They knew exactly how to fit the jacket to make sure he would be comfortable the whole night. Previously we had rented through Men's Warehouse, their suits were never fitted properly and they were so much more money. Better priced suits and all around better service. Just wanted to take a moment to say how very impressed I am with Friar Tux in La Mesa! I went there with my son in order to find just the right tuxedo, shirt, bow tie( yes bow tie! They never go out of style if you know how to wear them!), etc for his Senior Prom. Not only did they have everything we needed but in the color scheme we needed. See my son picked non traditional colors. No black n white or black, white n red. Nope, he chose white and beige! So I'm thinking that's an interesting choice but once we got to Friar Tux and saw the great selections of browns, beige and creme colors they actually did have, I knew we were in good hands. This was my first experience in a tux shop before, so I was a bit unsure of what to get that would be suitable for prom. Not only does one of the staff members and I mutually dislike each other, but the attendants were so busy or trying to look busy to not help us out. I kind of felt like a jackass for looking a bit irritated, but remembered there are like three different proms going on this weekend, so they are pretty swamped. Amazing that this hot headed little Italian rationalized a situation for once! But after 45 minutes of not being recognized (keep in mind this place is very small) and everyone else ahead of us going, I got a bit ticked. Thankfully the girl finally came over to assist us. The girl somehow was still fairly nice for the amount of people she had been dealing with and luckily recommended the same vest I had been looking at, go me! Way to have taste! However, didn't know tuxedos had so many damn rules to them. Some of the salesmen who overheard my statements looked at me as if I should know better, but uh, lets try to see the guys behind the counter go hunt for dresses. Exactly. While paperwork was going through, I was disheartened to hear some of the complaints coming from the guys who were swapping out their tux jackets; didn't know so many things could be wrong with it! Went to get a Tuxedo for a wedding. The payment process and fitting process were extremely hassle-free. Janelle is as angel and for my first Tux rental in years, made the entire experience smooth and ironed out the awkwardness. They did have a problem ordering the correct color for our vests, however. And because of their policy that puts the pick-up date so close to the event (a strategy to keep the clothes in circulation as much as possible), there was a bit of a scare close to the wedding regarding the correct clothes for the bridal party. Other than that snaffu, I would rent from here again. The price isn't too bad and the space looks and smells like a fancy department store attachment. Steven Christian was unbelievable. Awesome personality. From the moment we walked in he greeted us with a friendly smile. He didn't pressure us in any way. He was very patient with us. Although he normally doesn't work out of the La Mesa store. We were very blessed, he was there that day. We left completely satisfied. ****As for the finale fitting I wasn't able to go with my fiancé. I wish I would have but I didn't want to ruin the moment. Now the only reason I wish I was there is because the pants they provided didn't come with belt hoops, so they provided him with suspenders. Now he's a big guy. And he's also the type of guy that will settle for the suspenders just to avoid waiting any longer. He called me and told me over the phone it was extremely packed and there was a long wait. So knowing him, when it came to his turn I'm sure he just wanted to get his suit and get out of there. Well... When I saw him take off his coat at the party, I wasn't very happy. I've posted a picture and you can see why. So who ever it was that helped him with his final fitting obviously didn't care. Friar Tux shop was a pleasure to work with all the way to the end. They were communicative, sent email reminders and really did a great job at delivering quality tuxes to our entire wedding party. In the past, we had gone to other tux rental shops before (namely that Men's Lamehouse store) where we have had issues with over-pricing and confusion of which ensemble was directed by the bride and groom for other weddings my husband (talk about heads up asses) had been in. This just made working with them frustrating and in the end, it added to the overall cost of the items my husband had rented and ultimately, was forced to purchase. On the contrary, we didn't have any issues with Friar Tux. We went to both the Kearny Mesa and La Mesa locations and both locations were fully precise with our requests and out the door costs and every one of the employees were on top of their game. Not to mention, they provided a lot of flexibility in pick up and drop off of the rented apparel. I would highly recommend Friar Tux above all others out there. She was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions. We ended up buying a suit instead of renting (which ended up being only $20 more then renting from Men's warehouse). We went to Friar Tux for suits for our entire wedding party including mine (the groom) in July 2014 and had a great experience. We started out at Men's Warehouse and it just seemed like we were another number so we ended up heading over to Friar's right down the road and I'm glad we did. They were really accommodating the entire time. One night they even stayed late for us after closing. Haley was our rep and took great care of us and so did the rest of the staff. We really liked that they had a rent or buy option. We ended up buying our suits because the difference in price wasn't very much plus I was able to put mine to use again. I'm pretty sure if at least five of your groomsmen rent or buy from them, the groom's tux is free. Highly recommend them. One suggestion, try to avoid wkends. They can get pretty packed. Friar Tux saved the day and me a lot of money, time, and stress. My son was going to his senior prom and we had rented at the Men's Warehouse (the only place I knew for tuxes). Big Mistake. We spent nearly $250 for a tuxedo that was ill fitting, looked like it had been worn hundreds of times and the they got the wrong color my son selected for his bow tie. The service was even worse than the tux! I demanded my money back and after arguing 2ith the manager, I got it and left with only 2 days til my son's prom. I google the closest place, 2 minutes away. I walked in and they were swamped. But the young gal who was running the show assured me it will be just a minute. I waited a few minutes and she came to help with the process. I thought we would have a couple choices but this place has every style you can imagine, colored suits and all. We picked something out, got fitted, and paid less than $170! All the staff was friendly and kind. We picked up a day later and perfect fit, my son looked like a million bucks. These people are professionals and you can't beat the service. After a disappointing and frustrating experience with Men's Wearhouse, my fiancé and I stopped at Friar Tux to see what options were available. When we first went in, they were remodeling the shop and the walls were completely empty, but we still received first class customer service. They had easily three times the options as MW, even while under construction. Hailey asked questions and really tried to get a feeling for what we were looking for instead of just treating us like another number. She was extremely helpful, friendly, and knowledgable. When we found out she was the manager it was no surprise; she answered some questions we didn't even know we had instead of giving us basic info. She got us set up with exactly what we wanted, and even took off a few of the extras since we are incorporating some custom elements. The whole experience was relaxed and fun, and we felt that our time spent there was valued. With my wedding less than three weeks away, we knew we were overdue in getting our tuxes picked out and ready to go. I chose Friar Tux because they have locations all over Southern California and as my groomsmen are spread out from San Diego to L.A., I wanted this to be a convenient and painless process for them. What I didn't expect was that the value and service would be this excellent. This little shop sits alone on Jackson Drive, and as a small building with a small showroom, it doesn't make much of a first impression. My fiance and I looked around for a minute before we were approached by an employee named Guy who was extraordinarily helpful from the get go. His attitude was knowledgeable and helpful, and he had a great knack for staying out of the way with my fiance and I making fickle deliberations back and forth between vest colors, tie colors and styles. He didn't show the least sign of impatience as we put him through his paces trying every vest/tie combo we wanted, but he did steer us gradually towards a conclusion. The value seemed to be pretty great as we have 5 groomsmen in our party which meant that my tux rental was free. Later that day one of my groomsmen up in L.A. went in to get his measurements and found out that I wasn't in the system yet. He called from the Torrance location and I spoke to an employee there named Jeff. Jeff said that since I had only been myself a couple hours prior, I was probably not in the system yet, but he offered to call La Mesa and get it figured out. 5 minutes later Jeff called to say everything was squared away, without me having to lift a finger. Jeff was just as helpful as Guy which showed me this company was probably pretty solid throughout. So I was impressed. I didn't necessarily have an incredible experience, just a positive one. But maybe in an age where a quality retail experience with helpful non vibey people is such a rarity, a helpful smile goes a long way. read more

I wouldn't recommend Friar Tux AT ALL TO ANYONE!!! I would give it 0 stars, but that's not allowed!!! When we first went into Friar Tux in La Mesa, the manager was very nice and although she was the only one in there and had a couple of clients come in, she tried her best to help. She also said that we were eligible for a $50 gift card for having registered before the end of August... which we didn't receive. As we went back to following fittings for my sons and my husband, we had Marisa/Maribel/Mari, I don't even know her name, but she has dark hair and glasses! She was HORRIBLE!!!!! She didn't acknowledge we were there for at least 5 min's and as we were asking her information about the tuxedos, she kept looking into the computer and not even looking at us when she talked to us. The entire time we were there she seemed bothered and as if she couldn't wait for us to leave. I also asked to change the color of the tuxs for the groomsmen so they better fit the dresses of the bridesmaids and she pretty much said, there is the book look for yourself. When I would ask her about different colors or patterns, she was behind the counter and would sigh, flip the pages and walk away. VERY RUDE!!!! She (marisa/Maribel/Mari) also measured my one of kids and when we went to get his suit, it didn't fit!!! My husband's suit also didn't fit!!! So Friday afternoon, my husband went to go pick up the two suits... Saturday 1 hour before the wedding as I start to dress my boys, my son that the suit didn't fit, only had PANTS!!! We had to call and have someone bring the rest of the suit and shoes to us!!! We missed picture time and the added stress is absolutely ridiculous and uncalled for!! There is no way anyone can bring back the hour I lost for taking pictures nor the amount of stress it added to our day. I consider myself to be very patient but this is was the worst experience! Not only did my son and my husband have issues, but so did one of our groomsmen. Our groomsmen also told us that he was missing the entire top portion of his suit!!! Someone called him to come and get it a day later! When I went to turn in the tuxs, Maribel/marisa/ mari was there and I asked to talk to the manager. She said she wasn't available. When I asked to have the information for the supervisor or DM, she said she didn't have it and the only person that had it was the manager and she wouldn't be in until WEDNESDAY... 3 days later! RIDICULOUS!!!! Overall, the experience was horrid and I would never go back to Friar Tux! _________________________________________________________________________ I must add that after posting this review I had Friar Tux manager call me to remedy the situation. Again, Haley the manager is great! Wonderful customer service and wanted to hear the story from my side. We were able to chat for a while and I felt heard and understood! I get paired up with Steven, who quickly sped me through the measuring and fitting process. They didn't have the suit in gray and the size I needed, so Steven asked me if I was okay with black. I had the shirts and accessories to match black so I said yes. Steven went the extra mile to hem the pants for me, while rest of the staff were busy dealing with prom rush. Midst of all that chaos, rest of the staff were still very friendly and professional. You could tell they helped each and every customer with care and professionalism. And the best part is that I walked out with a great rental suit last minute, and I got multiple compliments throughout the night. Days before our wedding, all the guys picked up their suits. All of them were missing their pocket squares. The first person we talked with said no problem we'll get them ordered. The second person said the color we picked out and touched with our own hands MONTHS prior, and even had pictures of, didn't exist and that's why the pocket squares were missing. Instead of calling us when they came across it, they just said nothing. On top of that, they missed shoes for the best man and said "they'd do their best to get them ordered on time" because they carry nothing at the location itself. We did get the shoes but had to find an alternative for the pocket squares. When asked why the hell all of this happened, no one had answers for us and instead tried to blame it on an employee that no longer worked there and was actually the only one that knew what they were doing. SO disappointed at the people now in charge. The lack of communication and horrible customer service is completely unacceptable. They are unorganized, unreliable, and I will not recommend them or be back. read more

I went to Friar Tux Shop to get my tux for my friends wedding. I picked up the tux a few days before the wedding and everything was great. It fit and there was no problems with the tux itself. The only problem I had with Friar Tux Shop is that they do not open to noon on Sunday. I drove there first thing in the morning in the pouring rain to get it back to them only to find that they were not open. Since most events that require a tux happen on Saturday and since you have to have them back the next day. You would think that they would be open earlier than noon. read more
