The woman who was behind the counter came outside while we waited and gave us small portions of Alfredo pasta and greens. I think those were my favorite. Although I really liked the pickles and chicken, and fish and chips as well, no sauce was served with anything. Not sure if this was the way it's served or if it was accidentally left out, or if we were supposed to ask...but I was missing the sauce! Portions were generous and the coleslaw that came with the fish and chips was good. Mac n cheese tasted homemade and was nice and cheesy. Bbq beans were good but really sweet. We also ordered a slice of pineapple coconut bundt cake, too. A little too sugary, though, for me. The desserts appeared to be from an outside vendor. Please remember this isn't "fast food!" The food is worth the wait! The service was above and beyond. We were given sample trays while we waited!!! Who does that? Of course it added to the ambiance! The sample made me change my order because the greens, Mac n cheese and yams were worth the up-charge to substitute what orig came with my combo. I would recommend just getting it as a side dish tho because the portions were small since served in a regular sized to go three section container. You get the fish, fries, coleslaw, and cornbread. All were good except for the fries. I had to toss it as it was just inedible for me..just had a weird stale chemical taste to it. Everything else was fine. I saw their desert display case and I was planning to get a slice of something but the display looked really messy, so decided to pass. I had the fried porkchop dinner with collard greens and mac&cheese, cornbread and a small corn! As well as Sweet Tea. The service is excellent, and the noise level is really nice, but unfortunately, the food isn't great. My mom has a girlfriend who works in this same shopping mall as them, and I had my eye on this place ever since. I didn't know what to get, so I asked them for their recommendations. They suggested the fish and chicken combo, so I decided to do that along with a gumbo. They offer coleslaw, fries, and either a dinner roll or slice of cornbread as their sides. I upgraded my fries to Cajun style and chose the cornbread. After they set me up with a sample platter of yams, collard greens, and chicken alfredo, I sat down to taste. While I was waiting for my order and eating, I heard the unmistakable beep of a microwave, so it made me wonder how much of their food was cooked to order or reheated. The samples were really piping hot, and I'm pretty convinced they reheated those samples. Also, when my entree came out, it was so hit and miss. The catfish breading was seasoned nicely, but leaned a bit salty. When I broke a piece of the fish out of the breading, the fish still tasted a bit muddy, so that tells me the fish wasn't properly cleaned. The chicken was 50/50. The drumstick was breaded perfectly, and adding some of the Louisiana hot sauce they had was just icing on the cake, but the thigh was overcooked and the batter was slightly burnt. You could taste it in the batter, and you could see it in the color of the chicken. There was so much potential here. The cornbread looked slightly burnt as well and dried pretty quickly. It wasn't that soft, moist cornbread that we all love. The gumbo didn't have a rich and dark colored broth that we're familiar with. There were bits of crab shell in between almost every bite. Finally, the fries were soggy. They just threw a mixture of garlic and the hot sauce on top of the fries and called it Cajun. Finally, they have some tables and chairs, but I don't know if they're ready to do full services like other restaurants, because they only had plastic utensils and they came in the packaging you'd get in a takeout order. It's hard to see myself coming back. I was really disappointed because I was excited to see a Southern/Cajun style restaurant on this side of the Caldecott, but the food was just lacking. I want to come back, and I hope they improve, because they had a few good things going for them. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a while. Well, today I finally got around to it. When I arrived I was greeted by two very kind employees. They patiently waited for me to decide what I wanted (which took a while) and let me know what the "Special of the Day" was - oxtails, rice, and gravy. I ended up going with the Special. I also ordered the Four Piece Fried Chicken meal with/ garlic fries and fried Oreos for my teenage son. While we waited we were provided with sample-sized oxtail, rice, gravy, and collard greens meal. They also gave me a sample-sized cup of Kool-Aid. Man!! Everything tasted absolutely delicious. And the hospitality was top-tier. The place was compact but very clean and offered outdoor seating. Both, my son and I enjoyed our meals. He was crazy about the fried Oreos as well. I'm so happy to have found a real soul food restaurant in this area because it has been such a long time since I've been able to find good authentic soul food. This place made my day! We went here on a Thursday afternoon. We were greeted by an awesome family. We ordered 4 piece bbq chicken plate and catfish plate. While sitting at their outdoor dinning table, they were so kind that they brought us a little app of a pulled pork slider and dirty rice. The dirty rice was so good! The rice had great flavors and bits of ground beef. The best part it was not mushy. The pull pork slide was smothered with sweet bbq sauce and had a Fried Catfish Filetsoft buns. Few minutes later they brought out what we order. Dam they have huge portions. It was totally worth the price. Everything was cooked to perfection! The catfish and chicken came to us right out of the fryer. The breading was perfect. It complement the chicken very well. It was not too thin and not too thick. The mac&cheese was delicious. Honestly I wanted this to be my dad and mines new favorite place. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. I will say this place really did try but missed the mark on several of their dishes. We ordered through door dash and it came fairly quickly. The problem was our fish was over done as well as the shrimp. The fries were ok nothing special to write home about. I excepted the tempura mushrooms to be lighter but they were pretty heavy and greasy. I hope this place gets it together because they could be great. I had the two piece dark meat fried chicken, with mac&cheese and collard greens. Total after tax and tip was $17. The fried chicken was really good, especially the thigh piece. Juicy and moist, outside had a great crunch, and wasn't greasy/fatty. Nothing too fancy or overly seasoned, just simple fried chicken. The mac&cheese was excellent. The mac was really soft, not old, and the seasoning was on point. It looks a little dry when you first look at it, but when I ate it, it wasn't dry at all. Definitely a great side. The cornbread that comes with the meal is really small, I ate the thing in one bite. My only complaint about the food was the collard greens. Maybe it was just a bad batch, but it was SO SALTY and also very bitter. I couldn't finish it, which was a shame because I really like collard greens usually. The service was friendly, wait was about 10 mins for the food. The place is very, very tiny, couple tables outside to eat. They should post the menu on the wall or in the door window, because its hard to figure out what they serve when you're walking by.
