Coffee at a breakfast place makes me a repeat customer, and Pilsen Breakfast and Grill serves Intelligentsia, which is perfect. So I dine here a lot. The first couple experiences were not great with service, but it seems like they have turned that around and gotten better at predicting how much staff they need for certain days. We waited for a table for 30 minutes (party of 8).. we were seated and our orders were taken. We waited about 40 minutes for our meal and waitress brought out two plates at a time and she was clueless as to who ordered what. Not a big deal but as each person digs in (the 4 that received food anyway) we realize eggs are cold, meat is cold, each and every person has received a cold plate of food. We are in disbelief. Outstanding doesn't nearly describe how fabulous Frida Room is. They gave certainly captured the concept of service. Nancy the manager, Adrian and I believe her name was Angelina are tremendous. Unfortunately we requested an outdoor table for 6. The heat became too much and Nancy and Adrian kindly moved us inside, no problem. Adrian was extraordinarily perceptive saw child loving the cucumber water. He brought a plate of cucumbers with lime on the side. It kept the little one happy. We all order differently entrees. The enchiladas, huevos rancheros, burgers and quesadilla with ham and cheese - yum. It's byob although we didn't take advantage. Adrian told us about the tasting menu offered on weekends. Price fixed. It sounds incredible. We will certainly book. Chef Christian was over and above caring. After hearing how we LOVED the entrees he came from the kitchen to introduce himself and chat. I am sad that I had to give 3 stars because flavor and presentation of our plates was amazing until I took a bite and a long hair was intertwined with cilantro needless to say I was devastated because I was enjoying my dish the waitress apologized and took the plate off our bill and offered to bring a new order but my appetite had vanished by that point the whole someone else's hair in my mouth was a turnoff. Great example of the Frida Kahlo name being exploited to bring in customers. Food is horrible. Service is horrible. Price is too high for the shameful quality of food being served here. Got brunch here on Valentine's Day at this cozy little hole in the wall in Pilsen. They gave all the ladies a tulip which I thought was such a sweet gesture. Everyone was friendly, cool art on the walls, good coffee. Only downside was that the food was a bit cold - the fruit topping they put on must have come straight from the fridge so my French toast was cold. Overall it seems like a good place to keep in mind for weekend brunches because it didn't seem to be as crowded during brunch hours as I was used to on a Sunday. read more

The Chipotle Chilaquiles are very VERY good, don't expect nothing out of this world but, they are the right amount and the right spice. The Piña coladas are yummy, I normally don't go for Piña coladas but the waitress recommended and she was on point! My fiancé ordered the huevos rancheros and they were filled with flavor. My friend and I live in the area and we go to Frida Room at least once a month. We are always impressed with the quality of their food. Everything, especially the different salsas taste incredibly fresh and well balanced!! On our last visit, we were surprised at how busy the place was. I think they forgot to assign us a server, or our server didn't know she had our table because we were waiting for a while. We didn't mind, because we could see they had a lot going on at the moment. They said they didn't have anything gluten free (which I don't think is true? surely something is GF) which wasnt too big of an issue. My friend ordered some pancakes but was surprised when they came out; they were like a what a birthday kid would wish his breakfast to be, covered in caramel, white chocolate? sprinkles, the works. Haha, it was so funny because my friend didn't know what he ordered, but that definitely wasn't what he was expecting (his fault for not checking). The best part is he didn't want to make a scene and send it back, so he just sat there and asked for a to-go box slightly disappointed. The punch line is--the staff was attentive enough to notice something was wrong, and they came over to ask if there was any problem. He explained the dish wasn't what he was expecting but its ok, he'd bring it home for his roommate anyway. The manager (?) insisted on him getting another meal for him, which he did, and changed the whole situation. I was impressed enough that they noticed the situation and acted to fix it, even without my friend bringing it up. When we left, they didn't charge us for the pancakes or our coffee. This experience, as well as the several other times we've been there with amazing breakfasts, inspired me to write a review. Thank you! read more

Last time I checked chilaquiles where NOT quesadillas smothered in green salsa and mounted with so much sour cream and cheese it was hard to see whether there was something actually on the foot of this Mexican volcano. I've seen this place transform not once, but THREE times since the Argentinian pizzeria. I lived across the street for many years. Not only am I a fan of Mexican food but I also KNOW my mexican food. When Frida Room inaugurated it was definitely one of my favorite spots. However, I am forced to write the following after the last six months of numerous mishaps that lead to: I will wisely spend my money somewhere else. For starters, the ratio of chilaquiles (prior to becoming disguised quesadillas) was diminished to the size of my fist, and let me tell you I'm tiny 5' 120lbs of zero tolerance for this lack of business ethics. When I complained to the waitress, she blushly and genuinely apologized, upon further questioning, it seemed like I wasn't the only one who'd notice. With more people noticing and speaking up, I guess they were forced to react: so the pretend chilaquiles birthed. To add insult to injury, your prices are ridiculous high for the ratios and well, not to mention the incredible lack of quality. For those who think these chilaquiles are the best thing, I forgive you. Want to try the real deal? Take a 15 minute drive to Cafe con Leche by Logan Square, not only will you experience legitimate crispiness and flavor you will also get your money's worth. Last time I was there with my friends I tried the Eggs and Ham and it was delicious. The Ham is of the bone which gives it a special flavor. I hate to write this review and I actually hesitated but its a must. I loved this place. So I have been raving about this place to my brother. He's a big brunch person and his daughters are big on pancakes. One Sunday he finally decided to come, it was somewhat empty around 10am. To start we waited a while for the hostess (a young teenager) to take notice of us (party of 5). When he finally did, he sat us down with no menus. After a few mins we were handed the menus, we weren't offered coffee or drinks. Waitress finally shows up, apologizes for the long wait (which was nice) and takes down our order. She was super patient with my nieces who were asking questions about the pancakes. Again after a few mins, coffee was served along with the other drinks. Since the place started getting packed our order took a long while to arrive but we were actually very patient. I ordered the Entomatadas with scrambled eggs. They looked delicious, after cutting a few pieces of egg there was a long black hair underneath the eggs. Total bummer :( I couldn't find our waitress to immediately let her know, so I called over the hostess and he said he would let our server know. Honestly it took a few long minutes to get her to our table. She was extremely apologetic and offered a new plate and told me she would ask to get it out asap. Btw, I wasn't at all confrontational and very calmly I handed back the plate. After that the owner shows up with a non friendly face and tells me that he knows what happened but my plate is going to take a while because they were busy in the kitchen, (no apologies whatsoever), I didn't get to answer when he turned around and left... I work in the industry and get when you are busy but waiting over 30 minutes for food is not acceptable. A man comes over to my table, who I assume is the manager and informs me there is a slight delay in the kitchen! Haha really? Then why did three other tables who sat after me already get their food? I just smiled because I knew it wasn't true. Again I work in the industry and understand tickets get lost or your forget to put the order in.
