We have been in the Midwest now for over 14 years, and having good Mexican food is truly few and far between. We've tried them all around us, they all fall short of what we get back home. (San Diego) Until tonight! We were served by Allen, (the owner's son) and he was friendly, prompt and well accommodating to us with some special requests on our menu choices. The food was excellent, hot and served in a reasonable amount of time. Frida's has a lot of open room, and is tastefully decorated, the restroom (men's) was clean and stocked. There was light music in the background, and we were checked in on enough times to not be annoying. We had 4 soft drinks and our meals, with the chips and salsa to start came to $83 after tax. Allen did a great job, we gave him a $100, thanked him and let him know we'll be back soon. (October 3, 2024 they get their liquor license and we look forward to trying their margaritas! They are within walking distance and we have plans of spending some evening there! Frida's Cocina; I am new to Mexican cooking , so i'm not familiar with the recipe specifics. I came across this gem while looking online for something different. The pictures on the website are not usually true to life however, in this instance it was. I walked in to a clean well kept small business with a welcoming atmosphere. I was greeted with a warm welcome , and helped promptly. The portions were gratuitous, the host was gracious, and the food was flavorful and fresh. It was a wonderful introduction to traditional Mexican cuisine. I appreciate the care taken in the preparation of this meal. I will be back again. read more

For an "Express" place, they do a pretty darn good job here! LOVE the Mexican Coca Cola! The tamales were EXCELLENT! Couldn't decide which sauce, so got one of each (nice that they would do that!), and they were both VERY good. The tamales were the right amount of masa and meat. Went here yesterday. This is Illinois, so i think people understand me when i say its not easy to get properly cooked mexican food outside of food trucks. You're catering to some remarkably white people. BUT! this place is really good. Excellent street tacos. Good chips and salsa. Great service. Ambience is what it is. Lose a mark for the queso which is the only thing i felt was left americanized, it was thin and compared to the rest of the food it wasnt good. The distance from Scott AFB is very convenient, which is why I came. I was disappointed upon reading their menu and realizing they don't serve alcohol (I wanted a margarita with my meal). I ordered chips and queso and a bbq chicken quesadilla. The food was fine. It was pretty hot inside. FYI it's a small place (only 6 tables). We were traveling west and it was getting close to lunchtime. My wife was driving so I looked on Yelp for local restaurants. This place had good reviews and we were only 2.5 miles away. It's right off the interstate and not hard to find in a small strip mall. It was crowded with almost exclusively airmen from the local base. The man who took our order (I assume the owner) asked if this was our first visit and how did we hear about it? I told him Yelp. He brought our drinks, chips and salsa. They were crisp and the salsa was tasty and not spicy. We were not that hungry so we split one entree, the Chile Verde. It was more than enough for two people. It was fresh, hot and delicious. Stumbled upon this place after the wife saw a post on a fb group and it didn't disappoint. A very nice place that is definitely worth visiting. No frills just straight to the point good food. Wow wow wow, so many wonderful things. This place is a hidden gem for sure! I wish I took pictures, but we'll definitely be back. My husband, myself and my 1 year old went for dine in during a slow time of the day. Walking in we were immediately greeted. It was our first time so we had to stare at the menu for a bit. We ordered my daughter a "kid dilla" with chicken (this also comes with beans and rice. I ordered the chicken California burrito (salsa on the side and I added black beans inside) my husband ordered the BBQ chicken dilla which came with grilled veggies. The owner served us and he was so hospitable. Everything was made to order. He made our daughters food first, because you know how kids can be (and we didn't even ask for this) we were pleasantly surprised! The beans and rice are FRESH not canned (trust me you can taste it. The chicken in the kid dilla was seasoned but not spicy, my daughter LOVED it. My husbands BBQ chicken dilla was different, not something I would typically order but he's always trying the interesting stuff on the menu. BOY, I'm glad he did, it was so good, flavor was completely there. If you're into the fusion stuff, just do it, you will not regret it. My California burrito, is one of the most popular things on the menu, there's a reason for that. It is absolutely LOADED. It's just the burrito but really that's all you need! We also ordered 2 steer tacos, one carnitas and one carne asada. So simply with cilantro and onions. We added lime to both. These tacos didn't need ANYTHING. Made me wish I had a plate of just tacos! While sitting and eating my husband said the restaurant itself reminded him a lot of San Antonio River Walk, it had an awesome ambiance. The decor was super cute with Frida Kahlo memorabilia! We will definitely be back, and I promise to take pictures this time. One thing I do wish they had was Horchata. Goes good with any burrito or taco. Either way, make this your stop for Mexican food. My wife and I went to Frida's after finding it on Yelp. I got the Saturday Birria Taco special. Get the napkins ready, it's a dripping and dunking experience. Deliciously marinated tender pieces of beef in a pan fried corn tortilla with cheese and onions. The dish is served with a solid example of Mexican rice and a fabulous dipping sauce of the braising liquid. It was hands down one of the best Mexican dishes I've ever had. My wife had the arroz con pollo. It was her favorite version of the dish she's eaten and she tries it anytime she sees it on a menu. The tortilla chips are freshly fried and well salted. They have tasty salsa and cheese dip too. The owner and his son provided good attentive service. Highly recommended if you're considering something new to try.
