Service was attentive and prompt. I didnt test him severely, but the bartender seemed to know his business. I had 2 manhattans that were consistent and good. The fried green tomatoes were nothing like the ones in the movie. That said, i would probably describe them as green tomato parmesan. They are covered in marinara and mozzarella. They are pretty good, but not what i was looking for. Now, on to the main dish. The pork steak was perfection. Moist, and tender. I had them put blue cheese in it, which worked with the blackberry reduction very well. Elder son got great service as well. (He's celiac). I've been wanting to come here for a while. I'm glad I did I got the lobster ravioli and my boyfriend got some mixed seafood pasta. We were both pretty happy with what we got. My only critique would be lose the green beans in the lobster pasta and replace with chopped asparagus rice even spinach. The green beans were just not good and out of place in this dish, other than that great flavor and my boyfriend loved his. I also got a chocolate martini which was fantastic and they give you Italian Parmesan dipping bread which was to die for and a house salad comes with your mean as well with a raspberry vinaigrette which was also really good. Worth the drive..we just wanted to get out of the house in Chicago on cold snowy day (read subzero) and thought of having a meal at Fried Green Tomatoes driving 150 miles We had the Sweet Chilly Shrimp with a bottle of the New Year special Cab - Motto. As soon as we took a bite of the shrimp, we knew it was a very good decision choosing this place for dinner. It had the right amount of spice and was not overly sweet as many other places. It was exactly what we needed in this chilly weather. This followed with the warm soft Parmesan Bread served with their special Rosemary infused olive oil. The aroma of the oil, softness, puffiness and cheesiness of the bread forced us to eat up the entire loaf. The bread also came out with a garden salad, served with a Raspberry vinaigrette. We are not into salads a lot but the sauce was dreamy enough that we could just leave out the onions. For the entree I had the Chicken Marsala and my wife had Pork Osso Buco. Both came with garlic mashed potatoes. Even after having the appetizer, bread and the salad, we had the plates wiped out. Well only if it would be decent to wipe the remaining gravy with the bread. The chicken was impeccable, the Marsala sauce was delicious, perfectly salted, mushrooms cooked the best. The chicken, potatoes and the sauce all combined very well and was one of the best I have had. The Pork was decadent and rightly fell off the bone. It was appropriately braised and just melted in mouth. I wish I could have tried their Creme Brûlée but had to give up. Hats off to our server Samantha. The service was prompt. We went to Fried Green Tomatoes on Saturday for our anniversary weekend away. A couple people we chit-chatted with recommended it, so we were excited to try it. We started out with the bruschetta, which I found to be the best thing we ate there. The bread became a little soggy, but overall, not a big deal and some good flavors. Next came our salads with the house dressing, which was a raspberry vinaigrette; both my husband and I found it way too sweet and I couldn't even finish mine (and I have a major sweet tooth, mind you). Still, not that big of a deal. My husband had a glass of wine, which they brought out in a hot glass straight from the dishwasher, which consequently made his wine really warm. Their bread roll was very interesting: a large rectangular loaf of buttered bread with parm sprinkled on the top. Then came the main course, which is where the major offense occurred.... My husband ordered the osso bucco and I ordered the linguine with meatballs. In fairness, his osso bucco was decent. Not spectacular, but edible. Not worth what they're charging as their cut was much fattier than other places we've been to with the same dish. My linguine, though...oh boy. The linguine costs $18, which seems a bit overpriced for pasta with meatballs in the first place...and I'm from Chicago where we have tons of amazing Italian places that don't charge that much for the basic pasta dishes. I took a bite of my linguine and knew instantly that this stuff came frozen and was heated up in a microwave. Then when I cut a meatball in half, it was obvious that this was microwaved frozen garbage. I didn't even have to eat it to know. But of course, I ate some meatballs and my suspicions were confirmed. I'm a mom and have bought my share of frozen meatballs; there's nothing wrong with them in and of themselves. But to use them (and frozen pasta) at a fancy restaurant and charge almost $20 for them?! And they were so salty I couldn't even finish the meatballs. We didn't want to stay for dessert because of the quality of the meal. Based on the fact that his food was half fat and mine was a TV dinner, I felt compelled to review and leave 2 stars. I'd only put one star, but our server was super friendly and the bruschetta was good. Otherwise, major disappointment. The food was good but the service was sooo slow. When we got there, we were one of the first people sat. We ordered appetizers and didn't receive our salads until after 45 minutes. We finally just asked for our entrees to go after being there for over an hour. The entire dinner was a complete "train" wreck! and they LIE!!! I was told if I wanted to bring in my own wine that was fine but there was a corkage fee of $10 when we arrived he told me $15 and looked at me like he wasn't going to honor that and he didn't. I told manager I was going to put together a menu and pre-order off their menu and he was good with that. However, when we arrived and I told our server he said "I can't do this" and went on to tell us what to order and what I wanted would not be enough and then tried to "upsell" us on their wine. He didn't want us to use the wine we brought. He was a complete "jerk" and we had to ask for everything from extra plates to serving spoons. etc...We asked for dinner plates and they brought saucers to us and then we asked for spoons to help serve and they said they didn't have them! I will never go there again! The problem with restaurants in Galena, IL is that they don't care how they treat you or serve you because if you don't go back, someone else will and they continue to make money. While service was a little slower than I ever recall and he didn't see me to have the same training i have come accustomed to here, he was fine. Friday's are half price wine bottles! We splurged because of this and tried the Justin isosceles. I liked that they decanted the wine but I was surprised he didn't have me check the bottle before. It was a 2015 when they had 2014 on the wine menu. Not a big problem but I do like to track my wine years as I learn more about wine. The mussels were excellent and the bread for dipping is a signature of the restaurant. We were sharing the espresso bean encrusted filet so we only received one salad but shared. Another signature is their salad dressing. Steak dinner was split and plated on two plates and was incredible as I remember 15 years ago when I was last there. Dinner was crazy good. We had the fried green tomatoes (of course), which was delicious. The bread they bring to the table - no words to describe it except fluffy, garlicky, cheesy (so 3 words LOL!). The homemade olive oil is even better than the food, and i am SUPER disappointed we didn't buy the bottles when we had the chance. Do it! The pork osso buco was incredibly tender and totally amazing. My husband ordered the blackberry pork chops that had the most perfect touch of sweetness to it - looks are deceiving because the pretty purple glaze on the chop looked like it would be sweet but it was just right. And the french silk ice cream is a MUST after dinner - tastes like vanilla ice cream mixed with chocolate syrup, but wasn't overly sweet. Overpriced for the food that was served. I ordered the surf and turf special they had going on, which was a 4 oz tenderloin and crab stuffed lobster tail. Sounds good right. I got a delicious tenderloin that was maybe 3 oz and a half of a small lobster tail and had a small portion of what I assume was ground up crab and bread crumbs sprinkled over the top, with some asparagus. I ordered a $36.00 meal not an appetizer. I dropped $100 between me and my wife there and was still hungry. Food taste was average, portions were embarrassing. Never again. read more

Now, I'm gonna check my bias here because as a native son of South Carolina, the idea of Fried Green Tomatoes being an Italian Restaurant really gets my goat (yes, that's a real thing we say). So if you're gonna take that name you need to do your own cuisine justice. The potatoes were under seasoned, which soaked up the broken picatta sauce. What a fabulous experience we had at FGT! Our meal was exquisite and our service was incredible. Alyssa was as friendly and attentive as we would have hoped and she was on top of our every need from filling wine glasses to providing more olive oil for the dipping bread with just the right amount of fresh cracked pepper. We had the Scallops with pancetta and pea Risotto along with the linguini with meal balls. We also took a dessert with us and the caramel cheesecake was amazing. I called this establishment to make a reservation two weeks in advance fir 8 people for my 65 birthday and was told they only do reservations for this many at 5:00 pm and therefore passed on our celebration. So...we made a specific reservation for a window table online for 6:30 pm. We arrived a few minutes early and was told by the host that our particular table may not be available for 30-40 minutes?!?! Not sure he understands the whole 'I make a reservation and you hold the table' concept. Having skipped lunch we were hungry and opted for first available. Five minutes later a table became available in the rear 'patio'. Sadly, once we were shown our seats we asked to be reseated indoors as there was no ambiance and flies were flying about. When we returned to the host stand were were told that we might have to wait another 30 minutes. We took the beeper and waited 20 and were seated at the table we originally reserved. Ten minutes later our waitress arrived apologizing for the delay. She took our drink order and returned shortly after and took our dinner order. She was very nice and we chatted for a bit about Galena and neighboring Dubuque. At around 7:30 (1/2 hour later) I had just asked my wife why we had plates of olive oil when lo and behold our bread and salads arrived. Luckily we had time to eat our salads before our dinners arrived. My Walleye on a plank was good. My wife loved her filet w/ shrimp. We waited quite a while until we saw our waitress again (the entire table had been cleared by time we waved her down). I hate to think what our service would look like on a weekend. I usually leave a generous +20% tip but just couldn't this time. read more

I recently visited Galena for the first time and was told by a frequent visitor to check out Fried Green Tomatoes, and boy am I glad that I did! We went on a Wednesday night with reservations, around 7:30PM, and it was decently packed. You can definitely tell there is a regular crowd there, but once we settled in we felt comfortable. We, of course, started with the fried green tomatoes, which were to die for! I like mine crunchy and fresh and that's exactly what they were. It was also $3 house wine night which helped quite a bit! I had the Moscato, which was amazing, my partner had the Pinot Noir. We then received delicious salads and a big serving of bread/oil (which we didn't expect at all!) Both were delicious. Lobster ravioli and chicken piccata were ridiculously good, and we even had a little room for some creme brûlée! Although it was a little pricey, it was nothing we didn't expect for a 5 star dinner. Overall, an amazing night spent in downtown Galena at Friend Green Tomatoes. Definitely try and stop by next time you're in town! read more

4 and 1/2 stars, we walked in Sunday night without a reservation and they were able to accommodate us at the bar, a little close to others but not uncomfortable for social distancing. Servers were attentive and wearing masks. Caprese flat bread appetizer was delicious. We also had the house salad (comes with raspberry vinaigrette) and bread, salad was really good and bread was ok. Main dishes shrimp fra diavolo and meatloaf piled high - the shrimp was really good and slightly spicy, husband said meatloaf was really good it came with cornbread and mashed potatoes. Fantastic experience! Went three girlfriends for ladies night out and started out with the Sterling Meritage wine on special. It was awesome! I had the fried green tomatoes appetizer and it was wonderful. my friends had the steak martini app and loved it. 2 of us had the mushroom/kale ravioli and loved it. one gal had the maple salmon and she said it was a bit too sweet. The other one had the seabass and she loved it too. The salads and the bread were also amazing. Wait staff great. Beautiful place!
