Second time going here and it was pretty good. The fried green tomatoes are still my favorite side. Very nice and crunchy with salt on top. I got the same meat as I did last time and the herb roasted chicken was very good. Chicken was not dry at all. My fiancé got the fried catfish and it was pretty good as well. I thought the breading was really good, but I would add a little salt to it if it was me. The ambiance was a simple sit down restaurant. I would visit again if someone wanted to stop and eat here while in the area. Since it's not in my neck of the woods, I would not make a special trip. My first time at FGT was 5/21/24 for lunch. The food and service were both good. The menu and pricing were clearly displayed. I wish you were able to see the food prior to ordering but you can't. You order at the counter and they call your order number when your food is really. The inside was clean and comfortable. I ended up dining outside. I really enjoyed this because the weather was perfect! This is your typical meat and 3 restaurant. It kind of reminded me of Irondale Cafe. This one is kind of a sleeper. Tucked away in a shopping center. You may not notice it but definitely give it a try for lunch one day. The fried green tomatoes are the best in the city and you won't be able to find anything to top them anywhere around. Ambience is simple and the people are friendly. Sweet tea is readily available and so is fried chicken and collard greens! Don't forget the homemade remoulade sauce and the homemade pepper sauce available behind the drink service area. I decided to stop by Fried Green Tomato's since I am trying to do better by eating more veggies and I must say, I'm glad I did. I ordered the meat plus 3 veggie plate... specifically chicken and dumplings, greens, cabbage, and Mac and cheese. Unfortunately it wasn't until I placed my order that I was told they were out of the chicken and dumplings, and so they offered me chicken and rice casserole instead. Everything was absolutely delicious. The food tasted fresh and was well seasoned. It almost seemed like they cooked my food to order...that's how fresh it tasted. Also you can order a roll or cornbread at no extra charge and I decided on the cornbread, which was very tasty as well. All in all, good food and the restaurant was very clean. The customer service was great but the food was a little below average considering we are in the south. The cornbread was phenomenal. The fried chicken was bland and so were the sides. I am finishing my second visit to this restaurant, and this meal was better than the first (which I didn't think was possible). I had the fried catfish, black-eyed peas, fried okra, jalapeño hushpuppies, sweet tea, and peach cobbler for lunch. And I'm stuffed! Everything tasted great. The catfish was fried just right, and the portion of okra was much larger than expected (yum!). But the peach cobbler... ohh the peach cobbler. This was the best peach cobbler I have ever eaten! (I literally just finished licking the bowl...) But the best part of my experience was the service provided by Tracy, the cashier. Her personality would make the grumpiest grump grin from ear to ear! FGT is one of the few meat and three restaurants that are still thriving. Hidden in the corner of the Hoover Commons shopping center, FGT is opened daily from 11 to 7. I would predict that they would see more business if they stayed opened just an hour longer, but they probably do just fine closing at 7. I have to rush there before they close because we often eat a late dinner. Here's an interesting tidbit. They don't take call-in orders over the phone so you can't call ahead and place your order to pick up. You have to come, place your order and then wait for it. They have plenty small tables scattered inside, a soda station and a small condiment table in the middle. We all tried something different. Matthew's buttermilk fried chicken breast with turnip greens and cabbage was good. He liked the turnip greens and the cabbage was cooked just right. Sarah tried the beef tips over rice with fried okra and mac and cheese. She enjoyed her beef tips without complaints. I tasted it and thought it was rather plain. Tammy enjoyed her Greek baked chicken breast with cabbage. Sarah thought the chicken was a little dry. I thought the seasoning on the chicken was pretty good. Rachel's chicken and dumpling with pinto beans was a big hit. My country fried steak with brown gravy was also ok. The gravy had a nice flavor but I thought the fried steak was just ok. We all got cornbread with our meals and it was thick and tasted good. On one side of the room they have an open cooler where most of their desserts are kept. We tried a slice of the cookies and cream pie. It was quite good with a nice light filling. No one got the fried green tomatoes as a side so I guess we can't comment on that. FGT is a good meat and three place that you can pop in for a quick no nonsense lunch which I'm sure many do. They have good food at reasonable prices. read more

Every time I stay in Birmingham I get this doordashed in and it's so good!! I love this place!

As soon as we walked in we were greeted and we have passed by this place a million times. We decided it was time to stop in. Laura had a fried chicken breast(I had to wait 15 minutes for an opinion on the chicken) no talking between bites. I had fried chicken livers with slaw and fried green tomatoes and cornbread. Surprising little gem @ the Hoover Commons Shopping Center. Parking can be a little tricky since there is a Mexican, Pizza, and Burger place all in the immediate vicinity. As you walk in turn to the right and go to the counter to place your order. About half a dozen different meats to choose from (Greek Chicken, Fried Chicken, Catfish, Hamburger Steak, Chicken & Dumplings, etc) to go along with three sides and your choice of a biscuit, cornbread or Jalapeño hush puppies (.69 up charge). Greek chicken with fried okra, friend green tomatoes (kind of have to get the signature item) as well as the Mac and cheese. Chicken was flavored and cooked to perfection. Not my favorite cut of meat, but really flavorful. Mac & Cheese was really good, not too creamy not to cheesy, just right. Fried okra was really good as well! They really have perfected this. Comes out with just the right amount of golden crispy fried covering. Fried green tomatoes were pretty good as well. Actually liked them better with a dash of tobacco sauce. Price runs about $11 or $12 plus your drink. Service is good and staff are friendly. If you haven't been here you should give them a try. I'm not a huge fan of meat and three's, but in this case I think I could get use to it. read more

This meat and three is a nice, local restaurant that offers a variety of down home southern cuisine. The food definitely met my expectation of southern taste. For COVID-19, they have taken good precautions to ensure the safety of customers. They took the drink containers and put them behind the serving counter, so they can prepare your drink for you, rather than a self service. They had tables wrapped in plastic wrap to keep social distancing manageable. All of the employees were wearing masks and wearing gloves when ordering and serving. Best fried green tomatoes and fried dill pickles I have EVER had! I stopped in (back in November) just a few minutes before closing (I have been traveling cross country in my little trailer). The were gracious and welcoming. I had the fried green tomatoes, fried pickles and I ordered a cheeseburger (med rare) Burger came out perfect. the fried 'maters and pickles were the best I had on my trip. One of the best meat and three places in Hoover. I do love those fried green tomatoes, especially when dipped in that slightly spicy remoulade sauce! Love that homemade lemonade too. The cornbread is really thick and"cakey" so I like to dip it in the white BBQ sauce. The only bad thing about this place is that they are so close to my house my husband and I eat there like 2-3 times a week- it is dangerous! We have had almost everything on the menu, and our favorites are the fried chicken, beef tips, and catfish. The fried green tomatoes are a fave, but the fried okra, greens, sole slaw, mashed potatoes, hushpuppies, and rolls are great. One of the really great things too is how fast they are. We get to-go there as much as we sit and eat, and they usually have the order ready in just a few minutes, but it's still hot and tastes fresh. Plus at the front they have this spicy remoulade, ranch, and white barbecue sauce at the front that you can serve yourself so you can eat your weight in sauces but never have to be embarrassed to ask for like 6 more! Plus, since you order at the counter, pick a place to sit, and then pick up your order, it adds to how fast it is, plus knocks a little off the price since there is no server to tip. The tables are well-situated so it doesn't ever feel crowded, and I've been on a Sunday after church! They have outdoor seating now too, which is nice. The staff is fantastic and super-attentive and seem happy to work there. It's one of our favorite places and we go all the time. They are a little pricier than other places that are of similar quality, but the location plus quick ordering plus great options are well worth it to us! read more

Traveled from Charlotte, NC, to Birmingham for my Uncle's funeral. My cousin treated me to lunch at Fried Green Tomato's. One of the best meals I've ever had. Ever. The staff was so very friendly and accommodating. I got the fried chicken breast, collard greens, green beans, and a sweet tea. And they gave me two hush puppies, the absolute best I've ever had. And they have the "good ice" for the drinks -- the chipped/crushed kind. The chicken breast was juicy, seasoned just right, and had a wonderful crispy coating. The green beans and the collard greens were perfectly seasoned and cooked for a long time -- just like my Mamma made them. The only negative -- I live in Charlotte, and it will be a good while before I can get back to Birmingham and have another wonderful meal at Fried Green Tomato's. read more
