Decided to try them yesterday evening before a comedy show. The Cuban sandwich was pretty good and a little on the spicy side with the chipotle mayo but not too much. The bread was toasted, I would have liked it a little softer but that might just be my preference. The pulled pork frita bowl was my favorite of the two. I liked the sweetness from the grilled glazed pork and really liked the coconut ginger rice also balanced with the coleslaw. Definitely would go back for the bowl. It's a fast casual set up where you order at the counter then they bring your meal to you. The staff was helpful and friendly. The place seems a little bland with the white everywhere but was playing some good music which made up for it. It was too cold to sit outside but the lights over the alleyway was a nice ambiance. I almost forgot, the churro was so perfectly crispy with cinnamon and sugar on the outside and soft and packed with flavor from the orange zest on the inside. I had heard a lot about this place so decided to have dinner here while visiting Ann Arbor. The line was very long and out the door on to the street on a Friday evening. It moved quickly and I was inside ordering after 25 minutes. I got the fish frita, churros espanol, and the coconut cream drink. The latter 2 were great but my fish frita was extremely underwhelming. If you're going here, be ready to face the crowds and get in line! I was worried about getting a seat, but there's a lot of seating and after waiting for quite awhile, we had no trouble at all finding a place to sit. The servers were friendly, and I loved the menu because it's so different. I don't get Cuban food often, so I was excited to try it. I did notice that as you sit down and wait for your food, the servers come around and call out names. Because it's so busy and loud in there, I feel like it would be much easier for the servers to implement a number system where they give you a number to set on your table, and then find you that way. Just a thought! I had the fish Frita with island coleslaw, so good! I love that it has fries right in the sandwich. As for the loaded plantains, well...I could eat that every day. It was my favorite part of the meal. I tried the coconut cream Batido and my daughter had the chocolate espanol. Both were excellent. The chocolate is more bittersweet and has cinnamon, so if wouldn't be for everyone but it was good to me. I really loved the coconut one. I practically waddled out of there, I was so full. Very filling food. Generally I wouldn't get a drink like that with both the plantains and a burger, but I don't know when I'll make it out there again so I went for the gusto! read more

Frita's is an Ann Arbor classic. It's the perfect place to bring visitors who think Ann Arbor has a lackluster food scene. You have to get a Frita, a Batido, and maybe a side. The coconut cream Batido is my favorite and it's great with a splash of rum. The plantains are also incredible. Only downside is that they're (understandably) always busy! I was very satisfied with my visit here. First time here and it was super delicious. They have long tables inside with additional seating outdoors, and the general vibe is very casual. Ordered the chorizo double frita, and it was jam packed with flavor. Forgot to ask for lettuce and tomatoes which could've helped balance the slight saltiness from the chorizo. The bun itself was very soft which I'm a fan of. Coconut cream batido was very flavorful, more so than I had expected for a coconut flavored drink. Moreover, there's a good amount of white coconut meat that you can taste in each sip. Churro was only $2.50, and you can see the length is comparable to a forearm. Outside was very crispy and the inside was very soft. Seems like they speckled in lemon zest into the breading, which gave the churro a different touch. Two of us split the Beef Double Frita and Made It Loco - which was EPIC - and the twice fried plantains. Every bit was divine - rich, flavorful, savory, and the plantains added some sweetness. This is a review of two visits separated by several months. The first failed to post. Always delicious, the chocolate batido, a shake-like, frosty drink, was wonderful. The coconut cream version is amazing: like a cow dropped a gallon of fresh milk into a perfectly ripened coconut, all exploding in a restaurant blender! Watch out for brain freeze though! The beef frita with garlic mayo (the garlic is very restrained) is like the best hamburger ever on a soft bun. It's incredibly delicious and cooked to order. Other protein choices include fish, chickpeas and black beans and more. Plantain chips are perfectly seasoned lightly with salt and the avocado dip is great--savory with a slight nip! You can choose not to order a bun or fries which you should get anyway because they are delicious and crispy and have a nice, not too salty seasoning. This place is based on counter ordering and you pick your own seat among long picnic style tables that could easily hold 20 tiny people and six to eight large people. The churros are pretty dense so it's a bit more like cake texture wise, and the orange zest is pretty strong. I don't know how many people it takes to actually finish an order after eating a sandwich as well. We had four people and barely made a dent. I picked a pretty basic beef sandwich because I'm a semi picky eater complete with sauce on the side. I really liked it overall but I tried my friend's chorizo one and it had a lot more flavor and saltiness. Gotta get the chorizo next time. Excellent food and beverages here!! I've tried both the beef and chorizo Frita and I lean chorizo for the flavor. Loco is the way to go but they load it up fyi. Also you really only need a single but I tried a double this time to make sure. It took a serious commitment to finish. I did also add bacon this time, hence forth I will be adding bacon every time so maybe treat yourself to that little taste explosion. The fries on the Frita have great flavor but my advice is to also order the garlic-cilantro side order and split it with someone. So good!
