    vegetable cheese milk bread
    Dan R.

"I walked in, the baker said everything was sold I found out she saved me some sweet jelly roll Yes, the baker shop boogie is the nicest thing in town" (Willie Nix) The number of local high-end bakeries just added another really good one to the list when From Chan Bakeshop opened last week in Avon. They took over the old space occupied by Incredible Edibles on Route 202. This is a new spin-off location of their mother ship bakery in Cromwell and is so new they aren't even on the website yet. They must expect to do a pretty busy breakfast business because they have a slew of breakfast sandwiches and some intriguing breakfast specials. Honestly, when was the last time you saw a breakfast plate with hash, garlic soy, and crispy Spam, or one with Hoisin sauce and pulled pork? But we weren't there for breakfast, and our early afternoon visit was to pick up a few sweet treats for desserts. And I have to tell ya, that choosing among their gorgeous selections is quite a Herculean effort. They feature a selection of milk breads (breads made with milk instead of water), cakes, and pastries that were amazing looking. Luckily for us, we chatted with Adjoa who guided us through the menu and invited us to try their free samples which were set out on the counter. We finally decided on a vegetable cheese milk bread ($8), and three cake slices - Sweet Potato Cake, Blueberry Coffee Cake, and Chocolate Chip Cake ($7 each). We had barely walked back into our house when we sampled the milk bread. It was very good -soft and fluffy with plenty of caramelized onions and a sweet cheese topping. Later that night we split the sweet potato cake and the first thing I noticed was it was a huge slice for $7. The cake reminded me of cornbread and was actually two cake layers separated by a cinnamon flavored jam and sliced sweet potatoes! Was it unusual? Yes, a bit. Did we devour every last crumb? Bet the mortgage we did. Next, we checked out the huge slab of Blueberry Coffee Cake. It reminded me of a dense poundcake covered with a thick half inch blanket of blueberries and blueberry compote. It was fantastic. Last up was the Chocolate Chip Cake, and as luck would have it, it might have been the best of the lot. It was sweet and very moist, like a cheesecake with a king's ransom of chocolate chips. Fantastic. So there ya go, the four items we sampled were all exceptional. What a great bakery,

That's because when you pull into the shopping plaza.....you don't see it. But if you circle around to the right, you'll see it on the side of the strip mall's buildings. And trust me, this spot is definitely worth hunting down to experience a standout breakfast or lunch. We walked in a little before 1:00 yesterday and found a table for two in the back left corner of the dining room, so we had a good view of the entire room. I have to tell ya, the place was packed! Breakaway closes at 3:00 every day except Sunday (2:00), and there were breakfast and lunch menus out, plus a few daily specials. My wife went with a "William's Ham Panini" ($17) with thin sliced ham, bacon, caramelized onions, cheddar and honey mustard on a grilled panini. We both were struck at how much ham was piled onto her sandwich. She had a few choices for a side dish and put her nickel down on potato salad. I went with The JT Salad ($16). The menu says it's been their "best-selling salad 25 years and counting". It was a big portion of mixed greens served with house balsamic dressing, grape tomatoes, gorgonzola cheese, and grilled chunks of teriyaki glazed chicken breast. It was stellar, with plenty of that yummy cheese and chicken. The only sour note with our lunch was a rather steep $4.25 for a glass of iced tea that was half-filled with ice. The food was very good and a decent amount of leftovers came home with us for another day. I was unexpectedly impressed by how crowded Bistro was on a random Monday. I bet you'll be too.

But once we got there the restaurant was very nice , modern style with little greenery and bright / white anterior design . The staff was lovely they greeted us and sat us immediately. The menu had lots of options and something for everyone . I ordered the iced tiramisu latte and the ricotta hotcakes with Nutella and bananas . Which was amazing , very light and delicious ( I normally don't eat all my food because of large portions .. but I was given 3 ricotta hotcakes and I ate everything!! It was sooo good , very light and filling , highly recommend ! My sister ordered the VEGAN kimichi bowl which was really good as well . My mom ordered the mango soufflé pancakes which i tried and def worth the drive to try . Very light and fluffy cooked perfectly and tasted amazing. !! And presentation was beautiful My husband ordered the Korean fried chicken and waffles ! The waffles came in rose shape which was beautiful 10/10 for the presentation and taste . Again the fired chicken was still light ( and not to heavy ) Overall 10/10 great staff , great atmosphere and even better the food was delicious ( with lots of options and variety for everyone). Definitely worth the 40 min drive and I will definitely be back again !!!

It's a scallion pancake and it is stuffed with sausage and eggs. It is so delicious and satisfying. It comes with a side of sweet potato fries, and of course my daughter loved that. Also I wanted to shout out the waiters, who are really nice and attentive! The only reason I'm not giving five stars is that they don't have pastries! I wonder why. It would really hit the spot in a cafe like this, especially with their coffee.

First off, it's definitely one of those small, tucked-away spots you could easily miss if you didn't know it was there, but once you walk in, the decor is so cute. Think cozy, shabby chic vibes that make it feel warm and welcoming right away. The standout for me? The dinner roll. Honestly, one of the best I've ever had. It was dense, rich, and satisfying, not your typical light, airy Kaiser roll. It reminded me more of a Jamaican hard dough bread in texture and weight, which I personally loved. Super flavorful and filling. I was also really happy about their buy three, get one free promotion. It made it easy to try a few different things without feeling like I was overdoing it. As for the pastries, I tried the cinnamon roll and carrot cake. I didn't finish either, but the carrot cake definitely gave true homemade vibes. It had coconut mixed in, wasn't overly sweet, and felt more traditional than indulgent. If you like a less sugary, more classic-style carrot cake, you'll probably appreciate it. Overall, this bakery is worth a stop, especially if you're exploring the pastry trail. Not everything wowed me, but there were definitely some highlights that made it a good visit.

Although a scenic drive to Bruno's, it is completely out of the way for me, but I wanted to try them. This cafe is small, and very busy. They have some seating options, but all the seats were taken. They did have some tables and chairs outside, and it was a pleasant day to sit outside. Their milk is sourced from Arethusa Farms, one of the best, if not THE BEST local dairy resources. Their menu is large with coffee, tea, refreshers, including pastries, breakfast and lunch options. On this trip we got coffees. I got Nova's Nutella Latte, the others got a mocha and Kiwi, Mint & Lemongrass refresher. These were all very pricey, I was a bit taken aback. Each drink was between $9.00 and $10.00. Maybe it's because of the locally sourced milk, I can't think of another reason. My Nutella Latte was very chocholatey and very tasty, but my cup was also filled with ice all the way to the top. The refresher was very sweet, but a unique combo of flavors and pretty refreshing. The mocha was solid. Overall, maybe I got the wrong things at Bruno's, but I can't say I was super impressed, especially at such a high cost.
