A great store. Dave helped me today and was great (ask him to juggle for you!) I was looking for new running shoes to train with for my next marathon. I have been in the Saucony Kinvera 4 but was feeling like I wanted to try something new. If I knew what I wanted I probably would have ordered from Zappos but I went to the store to learn about the options. The staff were great to show me the different comparable brands and options. I tried on a bunch of pairs, some twice. I bought the Mizuno Sayonaro 2s, I'm very happy with the purchase...the service was great! read more

I was helped by Renne who was amazing. I told him that I was looking for a relatively cheap shoe that would also be low-impact on my joints during street running, as I'm transitioning from physical therapy back to regular exercise and need to be extra careful to avoid injury. He made sure to consider my budget, he gave me a full evaluation using the machine they have, and he described exactly why the shoes he was selecting for me were perfect for me. This is the best shoe store for athletes and anyone who wants the most experienced salespeople to fit you for the perfect shoe. I was having trouble finding a good fit in a tennis shoe so I stopped several people who were wearing t-shirts that said they had run marathons. I asked each of them where they bought their shoes. All 3 that I stopped told me they bought them at Front Runners. So off I went to this store and was very happy. They have a huge selection of shoes and athletic wear. Had good service when I went to return. First time I went I was sold insoles that I 100% did NOT need (learned this after speaking to doctor). 2 weeks later I still have a sprained ankle, and will not be able to compete in a race that I spent $120 to compete in. Here's the deal, folks. Everyone in this store is paid on commission. That means that the more JUNK they can convince you to pick up, the more dough they pocket. It's like walking onto a used car dealership. Canned greetings, fake enthusiasm, and pushy, pushy salespeople. I visit this store from time to time but only when I've forgotten something and have to have it that day (my office is down the street), and I will never, NOT EVER buy shoes there. I've been fitted for several pairs on a few different occasions and much to my surprise (not really) my foot is "perfect" for whatever shoe is on display in the front window or whichever one turns the sales person the most profit. I owned a store in MA years ago and I used to motivate my staff to sell whatever items needed to move with contests or bonuses for selling those products. Unless the customer knows exactly what they want, THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO YOU HERE. I am a lifelong New Balance wearer because I'm a big guy and I have wide feet and no pronation (my feet aren't flat and do not roll in). So imagine my shock when I was told that I would be better off in a NB 1220-something which is one of their best support shoes! I asked for a manager and was met with the same comment after he watched me walk (something stores do to impress you but really doesn't offer any information). I gathered up my stuff and went looking for the restroom before I went on my way, I instead found a white board with tally marks next to staff members' names below a giant "1220-somethings sold" I left immediately and will only buy emergency socks without help from any of their sales people. Using this store for ideas about what to buy and getting it online (cheaper) serves them right for being this kind of shady. They had an assistant manager (big Celtics fan, A++) and some staff members that worked there last spring/summer that were worth the visit for some conversation but the current crew is a joke. They own the NB store in Santa Monica too. Haven't been there since they moved. Hopefully they do things better but I'm not sure. Top to Top is a great alternative to either place, I bet. UPDATE: While I appreciate the quick response from their owner(?) general manager(?), I must respectfully decline the invitation to a chat and allow them another prearranged, be on your best behavior, this guy wrote a bad yelp! review chance. I prefer the anonymity that sites such as this one offer and besides, all that could possibly happen is that I'll be labeled a high maintenance customer that gets someones (probably an "expert" manager's) most pleasant sales demeanor should I choose to set up an appointment and visit the store again. This and other consumer awareness sites are designed to provide potential patrons notice of the pluses and minuses of visiting particular establishments. And that is all I have done here. The opportunities to impress and sell to me passed long ago. And while I am impressed at such a rapid response from potentially a higher up(?), I know and understand that the true measure of an owner/operator/manager/business is how your floor-level staff makes your customers feel. Your sales staff failed. Horribly. That means that either they are/were extremely bad employees, or that their management and ownership groups don't care about or don't know how to treat customers. I get the feeling that you pride yourselves on hiring quality staff members, so I must then question your training and business practices. And I have taken note that you haven't acknowledged my statements about what your people push on your customers. So pleased with my visit at FrontRunners, I had to quickly write a review. I've been a runner for years, always been an Asics girl (never mess with what works, right?). Started marathon training back in January for my May 6th run and knew I needed new shoes. Went online & just purchased the same pair of Asics I have always worn (same size, same model, etc etc etc ) BAD IDEA... turns out, not the same at ALL! Apparently, Asics has changed all that was wonderful about their shoes (boooo). So, ran into FrontRunners to replace the bad version of my favorite shoe - got fine service, bought some new Asics, insoles, etc. and was on my way. Easy Peasy. Nope... new shoes were just as bad as the old ones. I've got a really busy schedule so I just kept "dealing" with the crappy shoe. Everytime I would run, I would tell myself I'd go return them the next day ..... 3 months went by and I was still suffering (stupid, i know) Long story short - I went into FrontRunners on a whim (when I finally couldnt take it anylonger) to see if they could work with me on these shoes, even a lil bit. I mean, it had been 3 months since my purchase, i didnt have a receipt or the box and they've been worn!!! didnt matter - these guys were awesome & helped me out so much. Refitted me, showed me about 10 different pair of shoes (no Asics this time), changed my insoles around - everything! By the time I was done, I had a brand new pair of COMFORTABLE shoes, insoles and socks and didnt have to pay anything extra. This is what I would define as true customer service! they sold me something that I just couldnt like and chose to fix it! NO ONE does this anymore - there are so many rules for returns/exchanges - i really appreciate FrontRunners for taking my purchase and NEED for good shoes seriously! I used to be a manager at this store, before the original owner (Paul T.), sold it and retired. I stopped in the last time I was in Los Angeles, just to 'see what they'd done with the place.' I was very disappointed. I was absolutely astounded at how much the salesperson (I won't give their name. Let me just say that they wouldn't have kept their job 'back in the day.') did NOT know about the running shoes I was looking at. I supinate - noticeably! - I have some of the highest arches you will every see in your life! And this guy was trying to put me in over-pronating shoes. (That is a great way to hurt a new runner who doesn't know what they really need, yet.) I said "I cannot wear those. They are the wrong type of shoe for me. I need a completely neutral, slip-lasted shoe." The young man looked at me like I'd just spoken in a different language, and started to try to argue with me, as if I couldn't possibly know what I was talking about. I then said "Well, I used to be the manager of a running shoe store." He snarked at me "Oh, yeah? Which one?" I snarked back "This one." Hopefully, he had a fresh pair of undies in the back room; judging by the look on his face, he needed them. He left me alone after that. I decided not to talk to the current manager, because A) 'snarky' doesn't look good on me, and B) I didn't want to cause a scene. lol Our staff could justify charging full retail prices, because we really knew our stuff, and we always gave 101% to our customers. Running is, basically, a very simple sport. The FEW pieces of equipment that a person does need must be spot-on, however, and shoes are the most important thing a runner has on their person! KNOW YOUR STUFF!!! We used to GUARANTEE every running shoe fit. This required a lot of knowledge, and we all had it back then. The selection on the shoe wall is still pretty good, but it's a moot point if you don't know what people actually need. As many have commented, the staff are now trained to twist your arm into buying some variety of the insoles that they sell - even AFTER you tell them that you are wearing the custom orthotics that your sports podiatrist made for you! WTF, guys? Seriously? As a long-time member of the 'original staff' at the Brentwood store, I want to formally apologize to all of our old customers who are no longer happy with the service here. It is NOT the old Frontrunners, by any means. Honestly, I do take the tarnish on the reputation that we all worked so hard to build a bit personally. Perhaps I am feeling maudlin about 'the old days,' but that's because we had the BEST store in the city. Runners would drive from The Valley, The South Bay, and The Inland Empire to get our service. This no longer seems to be the case - at least not from my experience. We knew what really high-caliber customer service was, and we delivered it, constantly. Paul demanded it, and he paid us very well to fulfill his mission. It requires CARING. DEEPLY. Do more listening than talking. Great sales totals are the natural byproduct of outstanding customer service. You are in a part of the city where folks are more than willing to pay for the care and service that they are wanting. You aren't running a discount store - don't give cut-rate service. I wish you well, truly, but you must know what you are doing if you want to get a 5-star review from this old-timer. read more

Spent 10 min asking about shoes before she told me I wouldn't be able to try it on. Ridiculous.

I used to shop a lot at front runners...so today I went in to buy some running cloths as a gift. A Sales supervisor, as her tag stated, helped me out enough..but as I was checking out she asked me about the shoes I use. I explained that since I go through a lot of running shoes I order them from ROAD RUNNER SPORTS...I get my favorite Asics at a nice discount as I suppose they are last years model. I don't think my feet notice or care. She just shook her head in displeasure...I asked her what the problem was...she said 'Well, I guess if you DONT want the LATEST model..." Again, my feet don't know the difference. I asked her about thier frequent buyer program and if it would save me money. She said if I spend $500.00...I said 'a year???'...no EACH time!!!! OMG! Seriously??!?! and then she continued to shake her head in the most condescending way. It's experiences like this that make me LOVE shopping online which is where I will continue to purchase my running shoes and any other running accessories from now on. read more

The staffs seem like they don't care about the customers; I thought the store wasn't even open because all the staffs were doing their own things. I couldn't ask questions because the guy seemed to be so annoyed to answer my "trivial questions." It's a great store with lots of good gears, but I just did not feel welcomed. In summary, if you just need to go get shoes or gears, then go and buy them. However, if you have questions about shoes, running, and gears, this is not the store. read more

I stopped in after picking up our bibs for the Santa Monica Classic 10k. I'm a first time runner and I stopped in to see what I can do about adding more comfort to my ride. Their staff offered a complimentary fitting and were patient while we tried on 8 pairs of shoes. I was able to finish the 10k without any pain! This last time I thought I'd give them a challenge and I came with a pair of basket ball shoes and asked for their advice on inserts, I expected them to recommend a different store or even turn me away, but they didn't - they assed my bball shoe needs and thou they do not carry bball shoes here, they recommended a pair of inserts and surprisingly my favorite pair of bball socks that they carried in stock. read more

I went in and tried on six different brands of shoes but the sales rep had absolutely no idea what they were doing and couldn't recommend a shoe based on how I was describing my running style. If you're going to be a sales person at a running shoe store make sure you learn how to sell shoes for the person when they describe how they run. The only reason they get two stars is because of the amount of shoes styles that carry. If you want a real running shoe go to a real running store that will fit you for shoes. read more

I haven't run since HS. Fast forward 17 years later, I went out on 3 separate runs with a pair of work out / running shoes I had at home; the longest being a knee-jarring 6-mile run. Since I was planning on training for my first race/run with friends --- the Nike+ 10K Run in October --- I decided that the best thing to do was to invest on a solid pair of running shoes. With a $10 off coupon in hand and a recommendation from a friend, I decided to check out FrontRunners. I was directed to a knowledgeable and friendly sales person who took her time listening to me. She asked me questions on my previous running history and what I was looking for. I also stated my concerns about high impact long distance running since I've recovered from previous knee injuries not related to running (Left knee PCL tear and right knee MCL tear). She proceeded to take measurements of my feet, analyzed my stride, walk and run posture. I was then given a couple different pairs to try on from a couple different brands. I didn't have any brand reference and I didn't want to be mentally set to sticking with one particular brand. I just needed the best fitting pair for my feet. Eventually I chose the pair. Because I also stated my concern for shin splints and that I needed better shock absorption to protect my knees, she recommended some sole inserts for better support compared to what already came with the running pair I chose. Then 2 nights before the 9/6 Disney Half Marathon, I get a last-minute call from my brother saying that a friend of ours had to back out of the race for medical reasons. She offered me to race in her place. With little hesitation I said, "Yes. I'll run the race even if I don't finish". Even then, I knew it was an absurd and stupid idea (so did some of my friends, but rightly so), especially considering that I've had little to no proper training, let alone the proper time to break in the new pair of shoes yet. But I went through with it anyway. Long story short, I finished the 13.1 mile race! What a rush! No blisters. No injuries. True Story! Thank you Shay and FrontRunners!!! read more
