After 4 days of backpacking on the PCT and JMT..... this burger and shake were a heaven sent "mana from heaven".

Wondeful food. Wonderful customer service. Perfect place for anyone trying to escape a healthy lifestyle.

I just had a regular ole twist cone and it tasted as it should. After reading these reviews, I wished I had tried an old fashioned burger.

Grilled cheese was great. I got a small dipped cone with peanut butter which was great. They are cash only. Very clean facility.

Might have been an off day but my burger just wasn't that great and my kid, who is a self proclaimed burger aficionado, felt the same.

Great place to stop on the way to Mammoth. Yummy burgers, chicken, French fries and dipped cones.

Good stop for chocolate dipped cones and shakes burgers etc that aren't McDonald's but it very pricy (like $6 for a reg shake) and it's just vanilla soft serve w mix in syrup or canned fruit. If you're hot or craving ice cream it's only choice for long long stretch but ice cream nothing special for those prices. read more

Simple menu, yet delicious food. Not much seating, but I would eat there again when traveling through Lone Pine.

So, second time stopping here in a long road trip and we planned it in to our day. So worth it!! It was just as good if not better than the first time. The grilled cheese is amazing and the fries are the best! Loved our burgers! As good as (better per my hubby) than In-n-Out. Friendly service, amazing food, good prices and very clean restrooms. This is a Highway 395 must do! This will always be on our list of stops and we highly encourage everyone to eat here! read more

We travel through the area at least once a month or more to visit family in bakersfield and have always wanted to stop and try this place but we were always in to big of a hurry.... we finally had the unfortunate time to stop on our way back from our daughters wedding on 5-28-17.... being from a small rural town in Nevada we always like to support the local small business guy we would rather give our money to the little guy than big greedy companies that come into small towns and kill it for the small business owners.... the place was busy so we thought that was a good sign when all it really was were all traveling through suckers like us. So let's start with ordering no combos everything is al-carte which really hit a traveling family of 4 in the wallet. We ordered 1 double hamburger, 1 double cheeseburger with sauce only no veggies, 2 cheeseburger with sauce only no veggies, 2 corn dogs and 3 fries.... simple order and the " lady" behind the counter pointed out what comes on the burgers she wrote down exactly how we said we wanted our burgers and after having a heart attack after we were given a $50 total we waited and joked about how they better be the best burgers ever!!!!! After waiting about 10 mins out came our order.... we decided the nice shady park across the street would be a great place to relax, stretch and let our pup walk around and stretch. Once we got to the park we seen lots of dogs not on leashes and decided it wasn't for us and we would just eat on the road.... my hubby started passing out our food and the burgers were small and not how we ordered them JUST sauce only no veggies they switched the burgers around and the double burger was plain.... we could have easily taken the stuff off and my hubby could have put it on his double burger but after $50 we flipped around and went back.... my hubby explained to the "lady" I'm guessing she was the owner that our order was backwards she immediately got defensive and accusatory that WE didn't say or order right she ate her foot after grabbing our ticket and she saw it was their mistake lol she mumbled something about the kids in back were still learning.... order fixed with no sorry can we get you fresh fries nothing. Besides the fact that order was wrong the lady had a horrible attitude and we had to turn around the food was horrible tasted like crap and it's hard to screw a burger and some corn dogs up but they managed to.... CASH ONLY, which you don't find out until after you get to the register after standing in a long line. My grilled cheese was overdone on the outside and under cooked on the inside. My shake tasted like it was made from some budget mix. Fries were ok. Overall its just generic. Mono Cone in Lee Vining is much better and it has a sign right out front that says cash only. read more

Further from Yosemite than we wanted, but that made it hit the spot that much more. Small indoor area so in the heat don't hit during the lunch crowd. Exactly what we expected from the burger, which was great; and added surprise of seasoned fries that were also great. Of course topped it off with a Coke. Buddy ordered onion rings and they were crispy and good. Can't vouch for the ice cream products because at my age that shit drops right to my handles. Better than any of the chains by far and really didn't wait much longer. A park is right across the 395 if the weather is nice to eat outside. read more

Best Double Cheese Burger I've had in years.I'm so glad Fosty Chalet reopened I now have a favorite place to dine.I used to stop in Olancha for some jerkey but over the years it's went downhill. If you're ever driving down the 395 stop at Frostys Chalet you won't be disappointed. The service is great heck a few times the owners sat down with us while we ate. What goes better with good food? I hate to write bad reviews because it means I had a bad experience. Usually I have good luck because I go to yelp or other referrals to find a place. But we drive up to mammoth lakes usually every year and my wife suggested we stop a the frosty chalet for a bite on our commute back home. It started out fine. We ordered a double cheeseburger and for the kids a hot dog and a grilled cheese. We all shared an order of onion rings and fries. The burger was just ok. The patties were reminiscent of big mac patties. They were slightly undercooked. The fries were frozen crinkle cut fries and nothing special, just ok. The onion rings were better, crispy at least but the portion was tiny, I think we had 6-7 onion rings in our order. Again a frozen, premade product. The kids hot dog looked like it had been cooked earlier in the day or the day before and reheated. Not very appetizing but my daughter was starving and said she wanted to eat it. We also ordered 3 ice cream cones to get after we had our food. The bad experience started when we received the order and my son opened his grilled cheese. I wish I had taken a photo but the 'grilled cheese' was one of their little hamburger buns with cheese melted in the middle. Now I've been to 100s, probably 1000s of restaurants. Before the professional career I'm in now I cooked in restaurants, fine dining & country clubs for about 6 years. I've never ordered a grilled cheese or seen a grilled cheese like that. And that's fine, not a big deal (so we thought). My wife took it up to the counter and said my son would like something else, we'll just get a corn dog instead. The counter staff said they would have to charge us full price for the corn dog. The manager or owner was in the back telling them that's what we needed to do. I asked to speak to her and explained that she surely must understand that this isn't a traditional grilled cheese and should tell customers what they're getting when they order it. She basically said this is how they do it and in n out does it the same way. She said she would not replace it and made a point of saying they use very expensive cheese. (I could not identify what kind of cheese but it was some processed sliced cheese or sauce in the bun). Mystified over the strange choice in poor customer service, I said fine and sat back down. I wasn't about to give any more money to the establishment. My son munched on the fries and we uncomfortably ate our food and got our ice cream. The manager or owner came out a few minutes later and asked if we ordered a corn dog we didn't pay for. I said no and she was at the window when we were talking. (I think the staff put in the order even though they wouldn't take the grilled cheese off the bill). My wife was upset and made a comment like we guess isn't concerned about repeat customers. She actually went on to make comments that we should have made our son eat what he ordered (even though he didn't get what he ordered) and that she knows a thing about raising kids. My wife said again that we won't be coming back and the owner (or manager) said good and she didn't want us to come back please. I was very surprised to see as many positive reviews on yelp. The food is just okay at best. Absolutely nothing special about the food. Most of it is frozen and reheated/cooked onsite. Fast food cafeteria style dining. We eat out quite a bit and I like a lot of diner type places. But this place isn't cooking up anything special. Of course the customer service was appalling. When we go out to eat and when we order something and it isn't to our liking or what was expected it is never an issue to replace it with something else. I don't think I've ever been told that we should just eat it. It was very confusing for us, I guess we should be thankful this is the first time anything like this has happened. It will be the last because in case it's not clear we won't be going back :) Usually we are willing to overlook a few things and try again but it's clear this business has no eye on customer service. read more

I only had a strawberry shake. It was good not great. It was made with soft serve instead of real ice cream. Nice woman and service. I hope this powerful review incentivizes them to use real vanilla ice cream as their milkshake base. read more

excellent ice cream. but be warned: you can have a hot fudge sundae, or a pineapple sundae, but the owner will refuse to give you a sundae with two toppings. no matter how much you offer to pay!! totally weird. and they are cash only. Hummmm. Don't know what the big deal is about this place. $8.00 for a cheese burger and onion rings. The rings were way too salty and the cheese burger was small with a basic frozen patty. This isn't a horrible place to stop if you're hungry in Lone Pine. I'd rather eat here than any of the chains, but just barely. The bathrooms are clean and there's a nice little outdoor dining area with some shade. The staff are friendly and the food is fine, but it is overpriced. As many others have mentioned, you''ll end up paying about 50% markup on food that's about as good as the chain restaurant across the street. Good for such a small town seasonal burger joint. There aren't a lot of choices in Lone Pine to choose from besides McD & Carl's. My husband and I love it & eat here often. There's a cute park across the street too with a creek where you can eat your lunch/dinner, take the kids. I have been going up to the Sierras for years with my boys and we always looked forward to stopping for lunch in Lone Pine first at the Frosty Stop and when that closed at the Frosty Chalet. We like honoring Mom and Pop businesses versus the Corporate chains. We were bummed when the Frosty Chalet closed down. So when we saw it reopened we were eager to stop and enjoy the local flavor. We remembered how the food use to be. We ordered the cheeseburgers-$4,chicken and fries-$8, fries, onion rings and the usual root beer floats. We thought their prices were high but you have to check out the food to see if it is worth it. When we got our food, we actually laughed. The cheeseburgers were small like a McDonaids little cheeseburger with lettuce on it. They were a far cry from what they use to be. The almost $3 onion rings were inexcusable. Like the other review said, you pull out the tray and there are 5 little onion rings. The small coke cup was a joke - about the size of a free water cup somewhere else. Speaking of water cup, they cost 50 cents and no refills on any drinks. Obviously we were disappointed. We would like to give them our business but they need to do some serious soul searching about the quality of food they are serving in order to entice people to re-visit their business and compete with the local corporate chains. If not, people will get their food elsewhere and only stop for ice cream and a root beer float which was pretty good. We hope they make some changes. read more
