I've been coming here since years before they relocated. Scrolling, I noticed not so great reviews and wonder if the culture of City Heights is unfamiliar to non-locals. The fruit, food and drinks are always so fresh and tasty here! I recommend the Pineapple water for a refreshing and healthy drink on a hot day. I love this place more than I love myself. I would risk bodily harm and throw myself in front of a speeding Trolley to save one of their delicious fruit salads. Before eating the sweet, sweet Jesus candy, I usually wrap my to-go container in a soft, cuddly blanket and sing love songs to it. Typically, my fruit salads enjoy the smooth sounds of Lionel Richie, but as of late, they get all tingly for Josh Grobin. Yeah, it's whack...but if my watermelons, honey dew melons, cantaloupes, strawberries, bananas, mangos, peaches, cottage cheese, granola, raisins and honey want me to recite the lyrics of that pansy ass, I guess I have to comply. Escamocha is a must try - it is a Mexican fruit salad with several varieties of fruit chopped very finely and mixed with condensed milk, coconut shavings, and sliced almonds; all served in a Styrofoam cup. This delicious Mexican dessert was prepared in a separate bowl and, thus, had plenty of the condensed milk, coconut, and almonds all throughout in a consistent manner, instead of simply being at the top and bottom of the cup. Plenty of other types of fruit salads and numerous flavors of Mexican popsicles are also available. Fruitlandia is definitely a hole-in-the-wall type of establishment - adjust atmosphere expectations accordingly. I thought I had a "thing" with the artful fruit dealer at the Farmer's Market but he's only around on Sundays, and like any scab-scratching junkie can attest, you just can't go that long. I haven't gone anywhere else after getting a taste of their product. I love what they're slinging here. I love the freshness of the fruits, it consistent vibrancy and robust flavor. I love the pico de gallo with lime, salt, and chile powder and how it delivers me into a haze of piquant pleasure. I love the escamocha, its creamy but light condensed milk, slivers of crisp almonds, and abundant chopped fruit. I felt like a greedy little kid when I went to this store for the first time. Where else can you get ceviche, strawberries and cream, and banana splits?! We walked in and ordered one of everything (Cost about twenty bucks but covered two people). My ceviche tostada was excellent for the price. The fruit salad is fresh (I believe thats what the chop chopping sound from the back is) and comes with cayenne and lime if you like. I like. It reminds me a bit of indian fruit chaat. I didnt love the banana split or the multiple fruit in cream thing (starts with an "e." I cant spell) My friend disappeared for an eternity right after the food was ordered. This is one of my new favorites...I wish I had found this place sooner! If you're looking for something fancy, don't come here. This is not the best neighborhood and this is definitely a divey shop. Yes!!! A fruteria that's a bit closer to home! Well, compared to Chula Vista that is. Fresh fruit salad and fruit smoothies is what this place does well. This visit was for a couple of mango smoothies and a pico de gallo fruit salad. The prices are a bit more expensive that other fruterias, including my all time favorite, Teresita's, but it's still worth a visit. I was so excited about my fruit salad that when I got back to work, I ran around the offce to find someone to show it to. When I discovered this place was like 2 blocks from where I work, I was psyched. Parking was kind of a bitch but I squeezed into one of the spots behind the store. Once inside, I was about 5 deep in the line and it did take a pretty long time from when I walked in to when I was served. But I can't blame them, they are working as fast as they can! I saw a ceviche tostado order go by and it looked delish (omg did I just quote Rachael Ray?). People in front of me got this crazy concoction where they put sweet milk or something similar around the inside of a cup then threw granola in the cup, so it was all sticking to the sticky stuff on the sides. Then they filled it with fruity goodness. They are insane. I asked what it was and I will be getting that next time! (Update: It's an escamocha. I got one on a subsequent trip and I have to say I probably won't get it again - it's a tasty mixture of fruits, coconut flakes, almond slivers but a tonnnnn of sweet milk. A little too much for me.) I ordered my small fruit salad minus papaya (i hate papaya...it tastes like puke to me) and melon... I was concerned about a language barrier after reading some posts but it was just fine. My salad came with strawberry, mango, apple, pear, banana and pineapple, with honey, granola and yogurt on top (You can get either yogurt or cottage cheese on top). Put me back just $3.55. NICE. I supposed the fruit is seasonal, because I was hoping they'd have kiwi and guava, but didn't. I leave with a smile on my face and when I eat it back in the office, I feel it's really the honey that makes it perfect. So good!!!! And I felt so..... healthy. Frutilandia I love you!! Last weekend sis came down to visit with her 5 year old and 3 year old. It was hot as Hades and I remembered hearing about this great fruit place in the ghetto so off we went. The place looks like it belongs in TJ I have to admit, just a tiny hole in the wall and a bit run down. The guy behind the counter was super friendly and explained everything on the menu. We were hot and hungry, the kids we're climbing the walls and we couldn't decide so we ordered almost one of everything and paid like nothing. The goods: Fruit Ensalada: Mounds of perfectly ripe, sweet delish fruit like pineapple, melons, watermelon, guava, strawberries etc. smothered in plain yogurt, honey, granola and raisins. Amen. Pico de Gallo: Same fruit add cucumbers, covered in chili powder and lime juice. Hallelujah. Berries and cream: Large cup (and we ordered the small) filled with chopped strawberries and covered in sweetened condensed cream. OMG Good. Watermelon water: pureed watermelon, in a large cup (again we ordered small) over ice. I shed a tear it was so good. The kids got ice cream popsicles too and while I didn't sample, I can say they were enthusiastically enjoyed. I wanted a big bowl of fresh fruit and this place delivered. I got a medium pico de gallo and had them make it with just mango, pineapple and kiwi. They covered it with chipotle chili powder and it was fantastic. It's really nice to be able to get a fruit bowl and not have to deal with bs filler fruit like honeydew, watermelon or grapes. I loved coming to this place when they were located closer to Cherokee and University. The service was way better and their Aguas (fruit drinks) were Natural! Over the weekend I stopped by for a pineapple ONLY fruit salad with cottage cheese and granola and a medium pineapple water (I LOVE PINEAPPLE!) There was a line but hey, it was the weekend, so I didn't mind waiting. Tell me why the cashier stops taking orders to go help out in the kitchen/prep area??? Another 15-20 minutes of waiting! Then when he returned he didn't apologize or anything. You would think that they would be well staffed over the weekend, a holiday weekend at that, but they weren't! The food is good and their fruit is never bad. The rating is specific to their customer service. If your closing time is at 8Pm then close at 8pm. Its been too many times I go before 7:30pm and they close before the half hr mark. Today I even said I only had one fruit salad order and still got denied before 7:30pm. First of all, probably the best place I've found in San Diego for fruit waters and great, fresh fruit salads. Hubby and I had a couple of fruit waters (watermelon for me, strawberry for him) and a small fruit salad, and it was excellent. The prices were very reasonable. We will definitely be back. The only downside is that it is in a truly sketchy neighborhood, and there is not really any parking right in front. This is City Heights, an area you normally hear of in the news associated with gun shots. If you are okay with poor, somewhat rough neighborhoods, this place is fine. I don't mind walking past a crazy homeless dude shouting to himself to get somewhere, but if you do, this might not be the area for you. read more

I have been fruitlessly (HA!) trying to get to this place to sample it's magic deliciousness for weeks now, but somehow keep getting thwarted. I succeeded today, hacking through traffic jams with my proverbial machete*, evading high-speed chases and skillfully hunting down the elusive Optimal Parking Spot. And then... I was Inside. The interior is set up much like any other fast-food joint - order at the counter and get your food to go, or sit at one of the various oddly orange booths or tables. I opted to eat my creation on the run, since it just didn't seem like the kind of place people hung out and ate fruit alone. I ordered the medium fruit salad and the server had the audacity to ask if I wanted everything on it. Oh, DO I? Strawberries, pineapple, guava, banana, apples and melon, topped with savory cottage cheese, crunchy granola and sweet, sticky honey. My only complaint is that I did not get any kiwi. Ruggy, I blame you for this disappointment. I just couldn't wait to try it,and somehow managed to eat this in the car, while driving, without any sort of disaster that would require re-upholstering my honey-soaked car. It was deeeee-lish! I just moved from LA, where Mexican fruit stands selling delicious bags of spicy, fragrant fruit (pineapple, coconut, watermelon, mango, cantaloupe, oranges, jicama, and cucumber) are seemingly on every corner. You usually get an obscenely huge bag of high quality exotic produce for $5. It's my favorite treat ever and a serious bargain. But alas! I have had no such luck finding a similar stand in SD. Seriously, if you know of one, PLEASE tell me where! Rolled into Fruitlandia this past weekend for their pico de gallo, or their version of spicy fruit. The experience was very disappointing. The inside of the business is considerably dumpier than the pictures have you believe. There was no menu display, just a bunch of hand written poster boards taped to the wall. Boyfriend and I ordered a medium pico de gallo (about $5.70) and a small strawberry smoothie (don't remember the cost). Smoothie was good and came out right away. Somehow, even with 5 people behind the counter, my pico de gallo took an additional 15-20 minutes or so. Seriously, 15 minutes to cut up fruit and sprinkle chile powder on top. Since it took a while, I thought I was gong to get some quality fruit. Nope, a bed of cucumber and over-ripe jicama with some watermelon and orange bits on top. I've been coming to this place for over 15 years even when they used to be in the old location. Things are different, including their attitudes. Never coming back. We ordered a cantaloupe fruit water and milk shake, both tasted like sugar with water and sugar with milk. We told them and they "fixed" it by adding more cantaloupe, and honestly that either isn't true or the cantaloupe sucked (which they're a fruit place so they should taste their fruit before they sell it no?). This isn't the first time this happened to me here however, which is the reason I don't come as often. That's it though, I'm over it. After a hot day of walking around town, showing the sights to an out of towner, a nice refreshing smoothie sounded like the perfect idea. Sure, you can go to Jamba Juice and pay $5 for one and wait 30 minutes (like the last time I was in there) but I preferred going to check out this gem that I had heard so many good things about on yelp. The place itself is pretty basic but they crank out some tasty smoothies. When you walk up to the counter you can see all of the fresh fruits on display that are being chopped up as you wait. No sauces or concentrates here. I opted for the mango papaya which was good, although the papaya seemed to overwhelm the flavor of the mango. Pineapple coconut was also an interesting combination but not for me. You can pick whatever fruits you want, it comes out pretty quickly and a delicious treat for a very reasonable price. The fruit salad, with cottage cheese, honey, raisins, and more fruit than you could eat looked tempting. I'll have to try that next time. read more

Walked in here and was greeted with the nice fruity aroma in the air and knew that this is exactly what I need after a delicious mexican lunch. I was surprised by all the choices I had to pick from, thought it would just be some Aqua Fresca, Smoothies and Fruit Pico De Gallo, but i was wrong! They had all the above and then some, strawberries and cream, fruit salad, amongst other things. We had already decided that we wanted some fruit pico de gallo before we even set foot in the place when we saw a family chowing down on this at Super Cocina. We ordered up a medium, and the portion was plentiful, 2 lbs of fruit if I had to guess. You have the choice of fruit that you want and we chose to have everything (cucumber, jicama, mango, honeydew, papaya, cantaloupe, watermelon, pineapple and coconut). The ladies behind the counter are incredibly quick and efficient, we had our fruit party in less than 3 minutes. The fruits are topped with chili, salt and key limes, so simple yet so tasty, I couldn't have asked for a better post-meal dessert. This place would be the perfect stop to visit on a hot summer day, I must return for other items that other Yelpers are raving about on my next visit to Mariscos German or Super Cocina! Fruit, honey, yogurt, granola, oh my! This place is wonderful. Calling the neighborhood Normal Heights is a bit of a stretch, I would consider this City Heights but maybe my zoning is off. The exterior is a bit shabby and the neighborhood is iffy, but what wonders lie inside! I love watching the ladies cut fruit behind the counter at 50 mph with knives the size of Texas. It's kind of mesmerizing. I ordered the "small" fruit salad (it's huge) which is just as amazing and tasty as the other reviewers have promised. There were a couple of guys getting the Pico de Gallo salad and it looked amazing. My boyfriend ordered a mango smoothie at the girl's recommendation and it tasted GREAT! The only thing I would change is the interior. It looks and feels like a dusty "just south of the border" taco shop inside, which is fine for tacos, but something about the fruit being so fresh and flavorful makes it feel weird to eat in there. But maybe I just need to get over it. I took it back to my aparment.
