This place is just what Spring Lake needs! The atmosphere inside is very nice and you can really see the history of the building. We tried fuel bar for the first time and were sadly disappointed with the food. Charcuterie plate $22 consisted of 3 small pieces of cheeses, 5 crackers and 3 rolled salami and prosciutto, no olive, no jam, no mustard. Pizza was good, my daughter ordered the waffle and chicken small plate, waffle not cooked and chicken over fried , my husband had the shrimp and grits , delicious but only 3 shrimp and a small amount of grits and that was a large plate. Was brought here for Father's Day brunch. (Thank you kids!). We had the blueberry lemon pancakes, (outstanding), breakfast pizza, (...okay), chicken and waffles (pretty tasty), and I had Bloody Mary with brisket breakfast tacos. Here's where the rubber meets the road... Really sparse on the brisket... and a little dry. I expected at least a thin juicy slice, but no. It was just not satisfying. The corn tortillas were off the grocery store shelf bland and dry. I would not order these again. The Bloody Mary... too much crushed ice which melted quickly and diluted the drink. Not enough tomato juice. Could have been thicker. A little too much alcohol. I got the Serrano ham and Cotswold along with blue cheese stuffed olives. I didn't really dig the ham. Prosciutto would have been better. The cheese really did not seem like Cotswold. It strongly resembled Cracker Barrel brand yellow cheddar. All in all I'd pass on both items next time. The bill... for a family of two adults and two teens in Spring Lake, MI...$94...Yikes. Both kids got a special juice drink. Neither liked them enough to drink. Typically a family of four should get out for under $60. This seemed really steep. Been here several times now... Not sure if I'll be back. read more

Amazing experience. Amazing food. Amazing atmosphere. Allegra was our waitress- so informative. Gave us great suggestions. Very nice and attentive. We ordered our drinks from their handcrafted menu. So many different flavors that all worked so well. Zero complaints. The food - we ordered shrimp and grits- overall very good, a bbq plate (ribs and pork shoulder) so smokey and savory. Shecrab soup- THE BEST CRAB SOUP WE HAVE EVER HAD. The sliders- gone before we could really talk about the flavors chicken and waffles- great flavor! Came out just a little dry and when Allegra asked we were honest- the cooks sent us out a brand new plate (which wasn't necessary but so so so worth it) this made it for us. She said "it's your first time here we want you to have an impeccable experience" and that's exactly what we had! The chicken was so juicy and filled with flavor. Everything was amazing. The staff was very nice but our waitress really really killed the service! They brought us out a slice of cake as well which just sent us over. 10/10 will be back again!!!! We use to like coming to Fuel and supporting our local restaurant but we were hugely disappointed when we made our first visit, since the Covid pandemic, with the obvious lack of social distancing and disregard for 50% occupancy! We were the first to arrive two nights ago and sat at the bar. After we ordered, the restaurant filled to capacity in no time at all, including absolutely every seat at the bar (with zero social distancing) being filled! People were standing around people sitting at the bar and even using bar stools from other tables to add to the congestion at the bar. If we would not have already ordered, we would have left. The food was good but we hurried to finish to get out of the restaurant. We will not be back but will support the restaurants in the area that are keeping us safe by following the Covid-19 restaurant requirements. read more

Been here twice with my wife and all the meals were delicious. The place has a great vibe. Really nice staff at the bar and waiting tables. Despite being crazy busy they were friendly and helpful. This was our first time going her so we didn't have any expectations but we won't be back. Let me start with the service was excellent and the ambiance is nice but the food was mediocre at best. Our group ordered a wide range of meals from daily specials (country fried steak) to recommended menu items (lobster mac & cheese) pizza and burgers but everyone was disappointed. We didn't order their "specialty" drinks as they are way overpriced but did order beers that they managed to screw up. The highlight of the night was the key lime pie which was fantastic. It's too bad the food was as bad as it was because this area could use some fresh restaurants choices. Again the location and service were excellent but without good food the rest doesn't matter. read more

I've been several times and love it. Food is amazing and drinks are creative and carefully crafted. Try the lobster and crab Mac and cheese or bang bang shrimp. Best I've ever had. It's not a quick dining experience, nor is it cheap. It's not Applebee's. If you want simple drinks and simple quick food, go there. If you want something unique, trendy, hand crafted and high quality, go to fuel bar + refuge. I do wish they were open more often but this isn't Grand Rapids, it's Spring Lake and I understand their business model. I'm glad they had the courage and grit to open this type of place here. If you're okay with horrible service and subpar food, fuel is the place to go. We had to ask for our waiter multiple times, orders were incorrect, and bills were not accurate. We try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt but unfortunately fuel did not deliver today. read more

Loved the decor, loved the food, this place is cool, but it has a sound echo problem, it is really noisy the could add some soft items on walls or ceiling to suck up the sounds, I have heard this from multiple people that I have run into, that have been there. I went today for Mother's Day. My family made reservations but were not told that all day (including at 2:30 p.m) they were only serving from their "brunch" menu. The choices were extremely limited and it was difficult for me to find something interesting. I went for the "breakfast tacos" with ham and eggs at $10. I could have made a more interesting plate and even for the $2.00 it cost the kitchen to make the dish. I was given a small boring plate of two flour tortillas which didn't appear to have been heated up in a pan. There was no "flair". No fruit, nothing to make the plate enticing. Served open-faced with cheddar dusted dried dark scrambled eggs with no seasoning one one side (no peppers or onions or shallots or green onions or anything to flavor the eggs) and diced ham with perhaps some seasoning or dried glaze on the ham. A drizzle of unidentifiable flavor was over the ham and eggs. There was no pico, no quac and when I asked for sour cream I was told it was unavailable. The tacos at McDonald's have more flavor. Before the entree, we had an asparagus tart that was pretty good but a bit overpriced for it's size and the Sangria was delicious and a bargain at $6.00. The standout and the only reason for a two star rating was the wonderful banana pudding. I also tasted the other desserts ordered for the table and the chocolate cake was especially great. My companions were happy with the shrimp and grits. I tasted the grits and the gravy and they were very tasty. The pizza was also reported to be good. One last issue was the service. The server did a good job other bringing the check without mentioning dessert but we took care of that. However, the three meals were not delivered at the same time. The pizza took at least 5 more minutes. The kitchen needs to do a better job at timing the preparation of dishes for the entire table. Everyone should receive their food at the same time and all dishes should be appropriately hot. I was looking forward to finally going to this restaurant but I'm not sure I will be back without hearing some great reviews. read more

We attended a soft opening for Fuel Bar & Refuge last week and had an exceptional experience. From tasteful renovations of the historic building, (former gas station and garage) to the innovative drink choices at the bar, to the uniquely delicious food, everything about this place is way beyond ordinary. We sampled brick oven pizza creations, smokey wings, wild caught Atlantic Salmon with grits and greens, shrimp and grits, brisket, bread pudding and sweet potato cheese cake. This is the caliber of food we look forward to enjoying on vacations to foodie destinations like Savannah and New Orleans. To have these offerings available in Michigan and so close to the big lake is a huge bonus. We will be looking forward to returning to this destination restaurant for a taste of the fried chicken and other items. read more

Should have negative stars for the service tonight! Made a reservation and had to sit in the portico because the other open tables were "reserved ". Wondering what it takes to get a reservation at a "reserved"table in the dining room. What was wrong with our reservation? Discussed our dissatisfaction with the manager. She apologized profusely. Waitress called my wife girly and said if she was satisfied with the vegan tacos that was good cause she didn't want to disturb the chef to find out if there were any other vegan options. Received our bill and were amazed that servers and managers would apologize for so many things and not comp a single thing! Wow! Good luck fuel. read more

Stopped in last evening...wow a bunch of open tables 2 people at the bar,hostess asked if we had a reservation we said no,just wanted to have a drink at the(empty) bar,was told they could get me in Sunday evening,I said what about the bar? She promptly told me that was reserved seating also,what a joke!! We ordered from here by way of take out. The food was fantastic. I ordered a brisket sandwich. Brisket is always risky (either too fatty or good) but their meat was great. Not really a handheld sandwich, more of an open faced. My wife got the shrimp tacos and enjoyed. Lastly, we ordered the collard green egg rolls...and damn! These were sneaky great. And they provide a ton of different delicious sauces. Can't wait to actually eat at the restaurant. The decor and bar looked top notch. I just can't say enough good things about this new Spring Lake Restaurant. The renovation of this old Texaco Gas Station was done with such great taste and attention to details!! The amazing light fixtures made by the owner, Paul, from old gas nozzles are just one example of the creativity and good taste that went into opening this restaurant! The food and cocktails were exceptional. The owner, chef and sous chef have all created some wonderful dishes. Our group shared shrimp and grits, shrimp tacos, nachos, wings, brisket, salmon and grits bread pudding and cheesecake! They were all unique and excellent!! Drinks were also equally outstanding!! You can tell this restaurant is a labor of love. We look forward to many return visits!! read more

This is a wonderful building renovation in Spring Lake. It used to be a Chinese restaurant and supposedly a gas station at some point. Needless to say the owners spared no expense to refurbish this place and make it look cool. We got there early as people line up early to get in even before they open. We got a nice seat back in the corner. I got a mixed drink that cost 11$ and had more ice than anything else. When the menu came I was happy to see that they had pizza and tacos on the menu. But alas they only resembled pizza and tacos in the name. All the pizzas were overly complex in ingredients with nothing that resembled a traditional pie. My friend got a pizza and I took a chance on the $14 tacos with cauliflower. Big mistake! Soggy, floppy corn shells with the innards that tasted like a big bite of salt. Ripoff! Arturo's in Grand Haven will give you some real tacos at a reasonable price. And sadly, Pizza Hut, Gino's, jets, mancinos, k2,....you name it, pretty much any place will give you a real pizza at a better price. Stay away unless you are a yuppie hoping to be seen by all the other yuppies. read more

Sat on the patio on a warm spring night. Had a round of mule beverages - lots of varieties with their own brewed ginger beers. Pear and blue cheese salad is quite good with the spicy walnuts. The barbecue plate beef was very good. Collard greens and Mac sides were solid. This is a very good addition for the area - One of the few modern choices. Our server was also helpful and timely. I don't like salmon. Never have. But one of my dining companions ordered it, raved about it, and insisted I try it. Delicious. Next time I'll order it... or the shrimp & grits, or the "q", or the wings. Definitely the bread pudding. Maybe the outrageous cheesecake. And don't get me started on the cocktails. Any bar that understands the significant contribution that cubes of crystal clear and properly sized ice make to a mixed drink is where I want to be.
