Southwest Dutch Baby

We have been to the Early Owl several times since it opened last year and this is the first time we were disappointed. We arrived at noon on Saturday 8/17, we had 50 minutes for brunch before my Mr had an appointment. Surely we could sit and eat in 50 minutes! The bar had plenty of open seats - only 2 were occupied. There were several open tables and they were not on a wait. We were greeted by Eden the bartender and she got us water and took our drink and food orders. This was at 12:05. I ordered a Bloody Mary and he ordered a mimosa flight. Eden did let us know she had a bunch of drink tickets she needed to attend to so our drinks would be a couple minutes. No big deal - I appreciate the head's up. His flight was ready first as they were out of their house made bloody mix. I got my Bloody Mary at 12:35. It was a delicious Bloody Mary though! Our food arrived at 1:03, almost an hour after ordering. I wouldn't be as annoyed if the food was fresh and hot. But it was not. It was barely warm and had clearly been sitting under a heat lamp. Mr had to leave before his food arrived and I ate 2 bites before asking for a box. I can tell it will be good when it's hot. I'll warm it up at home. I'm sure we will go back. We have been several times with no issues. Looking around the restaurant I could tell we were not the only annoyed patrons. Sincerely hoping this is an isolated incident, I would hate to see them close.

Never had a bad meal here and I love that they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner all day long (the only place in Muskegon that does). My favorite menu items are the farmers burrito, French toast, smoked meatloaf, and 5 cheese Tortellini Pasta. They also have an amazing ambience and three different dining areas including their inside dining room, patio, and rooftop. Service is friendly and the aprons that the wait staff wears are so cute. Locally owned and women operated this is a great restaurant in Muskegon with a lot to offer!

Love this place. Couldn't recommend more. Breakfast and lunch menu all day and all food is excellent. Get the fresh squeezed orange juice. Insane

BLT and berry Dutch babies

Had the mixed berry and BLT Dutch babies and shared both. They were fine. The pesto and bacon is what makes the BLT better. The berry one was kind of like a berry soup with a pancake under it. The place is nice, recently remodeled. The service is what you'd expect from a small town diner.

Great local place!!! Food... absolutely delicious Service.... absolutely friendly. Andy was wonderful and kept our coffee filled!! Price...$36 for both of us Parking...street, parallel parking (for those who may not be used to that) Atmosphere....fun, relaxed vibe Looks like they have a lot to offer, not only on the menu but gatherings as well. Definitely a place to stop while in Muskegon.

Breakfast until 1 pm, and plenty of fun food and drink even after that. The Early Owl's been open about seven months and is gaining steam. Stopped in for a late breakfast to break from the Black Friday grind. Had the big classic breakfast: two eggs your way, American fries, choice of meat, and choice of toast. That's $12. I did bacon and sourdough toast (ask for jam!). I also added a pancake for $3. All was solid brekkie diner fare. Pancake was golden brown, fluffy, and sweet. Coffee creamer seemed to be presweetened--might have been condensed milk; it had that consistency. Full bar available, too. Found easy street parking. I'd go back!

First visit... everything was EXCELLENT. Service was also exceptional.

If you have the opportunity to come here, do it! This was my 3rd visit over the course of a few months and each time the food is fantastic. Everything from a traditional breakfast to the Carnitas Benny to soup & salad for lunch... as well as bringing real sweetened cream with the coffee... all have been perfect! Plenty of comfy seating, spacious and stylish interior and lots of patio seating during the summer. The only reason I took away one star was because service was not great during my most recent visit. After receiving our food, our server took forever to come back. We waited and waited for our bill... killed some time by taking separate trips to the bathroom... and still waited. She was having conversation with a friend at the bar and seemed to have lost track of time with her tables. Overall, though, this place is a GREAT addition to downtown Muskegon. We'll for sure be back. :)

We paid 90 something dollars for a veggie platter, to have wilted tomatoes, dry carrots and no broccoli. We paid 15 dollars a pizza to have the pizza just to be cold and small. If i recall it was only a 12 inch personal pizza for 15 bucks.. And the chicken in the pot was soggy because they steamed it for an hour before we where able to access it. We noticed a safety hazard and made sure management noted it for when we leave and not shortly after that they jacked up the music very very loud intending to kick us out. Overall we where really disappointed and would not recommend this place for a get together.

If you're lucky enough, you can watch the Muskegon Lumberjacks play while enjoying your street tacos. Don't miss out on their rotating drink specials! I had a boozy frozen apple cider and it was SO GOOD: strong, flavorful, seasonal. CALLING ALL VEGANS. This is probably going to end up being your go-to if you're in Muskegon as it's one of the only places that actually has options on the menu. + chips and guac ($7): such a HUGE portion of house made guacamole and fresh fried chips. Expect some spice with that guac too: very oniony and lots of chunks of jalapeno. Seriously, this would cost at least $11 to $14 where I'm from. + "Secret Love" vegan tacos ($5): deep fried cauliflower covered in buffalo sauce, a celery cucumber sauce, and scallions. This flavor profile is hard not to love, and these were fantastic. Good textures, very hearty. +/- "The Bruss Lee" vegan tacos ($4): deep fried brussel sprouts in an Asian marinade, kimchi, scallions, and peanuts. These were okay. Just VERY WET, kind of fell apart, and the brussels were crunchy and tough. I was so excited to get another frozen apple cider and to try the sweet potato nachos, that I came back a second night... And had a totally different experience. The first night I came (a Saturday; they were SO BUSY), the bartender was engaging, interactive. Other staff cleaning up and around customers seemed friendly and cool too. The second night (a Sunday; there wasn't more than twelve or so customers there)? They were so rude. One staff member was yelling at people to get into a single orderly line (we were) and the bartender said they were cash only (they weren't the previous night, and...) "The people in front of me just used their card," I pointed out when it was my turn. "Yeah, but now the internets down. The whole street is dealing with it. Not our problem." 1) This was not true, as I went to other businesses on the street and paid with card no problem, 2) Just an observation: it seemed like they were only telling this to people with food menus in their hand (I saw the cook repeatedly shaking his head and using his arms to make an "x" at the bartenders). I saw a few other reviews mention similarly polarizing experiences, so it's definitely something to note.

The menus are QR codes on the tables, which is pretty standard. I didn't love that food and drinks are on separate tabs. So with 2 of us there, we had 4 tabs by the end. 1 each for food, and 1 each for drinks. It felt a little disjointed. It was also a little hard to get a server's attention when needed. You order on your phone, but just to get a couple glasses of water it took some time to flag down our server. And really, it's more of a host/food-runner situation since all the order processing is done online. I'm not super into cocktails, but their drinks really sounded amazing. They have some very fun, and inventive cocktails. If we hadn't already been to 2 breweries I probably would've ordered one. Instead I had a beer, which I believe was a house made IPA, and was fine. We weren't super hungry so we each ordered some egg rolls and shared them. Not necessarily the best I've ever had, but they were definitely good enough. I appreciate that they had some fun, not typical types of egg rolls on the menu. The space was cool, and I liked the food well enough that I'd go back. Hopefully it will feel a little more like a dining experience next time. That, or they could just have people order at a counter and it would make more sense. The Sunday brunch menu is small, but sounds amazing. I'm more likely to return for that rather than for a dinner.

HURL and SPEW more like it…read more A round of applause to the menu writer for creating intrigue. And also props to the waiters for having a positive attitude about deplorable food. I DO NOT recommend eating the food here. Laughably bad. The heirloom tomato was described as marinated, pickled, smoked, candied, and blistered with micro cilantro and finishing salt. Okay, already trying too hard with the descriptors. And no effort whatsoever with the actual execution of the dish. It was truly cold cherry tomatoes with olive oil and salt. Sad. A little funny. And ultimately puzzling. The shrimp was $15 for 3 shrimp plated on shredded iceberg and pickled jalapeño. The wontons might have been purchased at Trader Joe's and thrown in the deep frier. Lastly, the burrata. I should have known better than to order burrata "fried," that's a tragic oxymoron. Rubbery on the inside, crusty on the outside, and seeping with milky juices, tenderly plated with thin slices of hamburger bun cutely called a crostini. Stick to the cocktails-- had we only stopped for drinks, our review would have been glistening with stars.

The first night I came to this bar trying to play pool there were some 20-year-olds belligerently drunk. It was getting close to closing time and an effort to expedite the game apparently I offended one of those 20-year-olds. And apparently one of those 20-year-olds runs the place because as I proceeded to get a second drink I was told that I was cut off for upsetting the customers. As I tried explaining the situation and how grossly and appropriate this was I was not heard. In fact the bartender was actually quite rude and clearly did not care what I had to say because she did not know me so I must be a significant. It's clear that they do not want new business. The only thing that keeps this bar alive is that they are only late night bar. Pool is $2 a game which is pretty steep. The place looks like it hasn't been updated since the '80s or '90s. Started off strong with the breakfast burrito. It was so good! I don't know if it had a cheese sauce or just melted American cheese, but it was a good balance of cheese, hash browns, eggs and sausage. The munchwrap was awesome with chorizo sausage, hash browns, a tostada for crunch and cheese all grilled up in a flour tortilla. Last and our least liked was the Cheddar Bay Biscuit bowl. I like the concept, but the execution was poor. The biscuit had been microwaved damn near to death. It was hard to cut through with a knife. The consistency was somehow soggy and hard while also chewy. Add to that the saltiest sausage gravy ever. We each ate one bite, said no thank you and tossed it. Everything else was so good, this might just be a bad one off, but I don't think I could be convinced to try it again.
