I totally adore this place! Every time i'm in the area for dinner, this is always the place i feel the NEED to go to! Every time!!!!!!! The habachi is is just the funnest experience ever. The chefs are totally amazing and hilarious and they make amazing food right in front of you. They give out free saki all the time and just make your dining experience a blast. The prices aren't great, the service is mediocre at best, and the food is just "OK." They actually weren't so bad when they first opened, but have seemed to decline more and more as time has gone by. Finally my wife and I just stopped going. Worst experience so far was getting a piece of bad tuna sashimi and telling the waitress so. She they proceeded to tell me "You know it's raw, right?" Yikes. They didn't even compensate me for the bad piece of fish. Also, be careful going with small children. The waitresses will NEVER leave you alone. Some people may think that's cute. Super disappointing. I use to love Fuji, is seems it has started to go down hill. Immediate reaction, it felt dirty. Attention to detail was lost. When this restaurant first opened up it was so beautiful inside. We were sat at a booth, table was still sticky. Window looked like it haven't been washed in years, the soy sauce looked like it Haden's been cleaned out in a while either... even a simple rinse would make it look more appetizing to use. Here to rectify my mistake, though they share a 3-star rating so it's not going to make a difference, really. Just acceptable. That's really all I can say. This is a chain restaraunt that is pretty good. I can only comment on their teryaki chicken. I am not a big fan of Japanese cuisine, but went here for a change. The food was very good and fair sized portions. They only give you chopsticks and silverware is by request only. They have a sushi bar which people seem to like. Honestly the worst sushi experience I've ever had, ever. There was a layer of grease on everything in the restaurant, from the booths to the bottles of soy sauce. One of those places where the lights are dimmed not so much for ambiance, but more likely to make the general dinginess less obvious. I had the urge to turn around and leave as soon as I walked in - I was greeted by the strong smell of old grease hanging in the air. But my wife was dying for sushi, so I decided to cowboy up. I honestly don't know where the good reviews are coming from, though the place seemed to have a steady stream of customers. My wife's plate was not clean and had to be changed. The food itself wasn't quite as bad as the setting. We had a rather bland squid dish as an appetizer. The sushi was definitely unremarkable - not totally fresh, but not old either. C or C-minus. But the uni we ordered tasted so old that I actually spit it back out into my napkin (a true sin for anyone who loves uni). The food here is amazing! I definitely recommend getting the Hibachi dinner with a huge group of friends. My friends and I reserve the party room (holds 18+) every time one of us is celebrating a birthday. You get a special dessert and funny little song when it's your birthday. I have been to Fuji numerous times for both hibachi and sushi (if you look at my previous hibachi reviews, I normally don't eat the hibachi) but I will say their food is good. I always go for the spicy tuna roll which is amazing here. I have had the edamame which is amazing as well, not to salted but just salted enough to where I like it. The staff is always friendly and even if you come late at night they don't have that "are you serious" look that some other restaurants will give you when you come in almost at closing time. My friends don't eat the shrimp that comes with their hibachi so they always give it to me and it's always cooked perfectly. Rice is always good and their chicken or steak is always cooked perfect as well. Considering it IS Torrington, you're not going to get top class 5 star restaurants here. Perfect. Everything you want. Quality meat, crisp vegetables, Wasn't sure about the spiciness level so I ordered some sauce on the side, but get this! And add the sauce if you like some heat. It is everything I've ever wanted from a "chicken and vegetables without a lot of other nonsense but at the same time a lot of flavor" dish. Fuji has figured it out The miso soup: I came home later to see my husband eating the rest of it with tears in his eyes because it," tastes like that perfect flavor you can never seem to replicate but will always remember. OK, here's the paradox. The food at Fuji ranged from good to downright excellent (that would be the sushi bar). The hibachi tables are very popular. The bar is well attended. Unfortunately, this is a Japanese themed restaurant that is owned and run by Chinese proprietors, with Chinese waitstaff. So, the "Japanese service refinements" are lacking. There is a level of service that one expects in a Japanese restaurant. One does not see anything close to the expected level of service at Fuji. Perhaps it is a cultural anomy. Perhaps I'm too sensitive to the shortcomings of the service. All that I know is that Fuji's food is mostly quite good, however the service does not even come close to measuring up to even an average Japanese restaurant. read more
