From top - pad Thai & drunken noodles
    Russ K.

This restaurant has been open for ~5 months, so it was a good time for a review! This was a Monday evening takeout scenario and I'm happy to report the online ordering process was as smooth as freshly Zamboni'd ice. Getting down to the food: First off, I have loved Thai food for decades, and have been to all the restaurants within a 25-30 miles radius. The previous establishment in this location overcooked their Thai noodle dishes (so I didn't go often). However, Charming Thai nails the noodle dishes, judged by our pad thai and pad kee mao (aka drunken noodles). Portions were decent, but not large, which is a bit concerning with the dishes being $2-3 more per entree as compared to nearby Thai food. Next time we'll eat in, as there is ample dining space (see pics).

Every table is served these crispy treats

Recently driving by the last couple weeks I noticed a brand new sign by the street indicating a new restaurant was in town. So my wife and I decided to give it a try Saturday night. The place was empty except for one other couple inside on a Saturday at 6:00pm. I will though acknowledge that the amount of people coming to pick up take out was constant and busy. Interior was inviting but similar to the previous restaurant at this location. We were greeted by a young waitress who was friendly and personable. There's plenty of items to select from the menu. It's not only Thai food but additional Asian cuisine. We chose some shrimp wrapped in a crispy dough similar to those common mini Thai crispy rolls. It came with a sweet & spicy dipping sauce. Pretty basic. My wife ordered the Massaman (spelling) curry which she ordered mild. She enjoyed it. I ordered the Pad See Ew. Not every Thai restaurant offers this dish on their menu and it's one of my favorites. Ironically, this was the first time I was ever asked my spice level. Typically it's one of those dishes that isn't served as a spicy dish. So I ordered medium due to it was our first time here and wasn't familiar with their spice levels. It was perfect. I also chose pork belly as protein which was also a first for me. I realize that cultures have numerous versions of foods but but this dish had a ton of sliced carrots which I've never experienced in many Thai restaurants I've visited in NYC, and I was also surprised with the baby corn in my dish, also a little unorthodox again, only based on the restaurants I've gone to in NYC. I'm not complaining but just remarking. When my meal arrived I did ask the waitress for a little fish sauce which she said she would find out if they have any. She never came back with the fish sauce or the answer, but I finished my dish and enjoyed even without the fish sauce. We try to support our local restaurants and you should too. Charming Thai may be a little new to the neighborhood but I see no reason that the word of mouth will spread quickly.

I simply cannot imagine ordering anything other than their Curry Ramen bowl from this point forward. Like one would legitimately be insane not to get it, provided you are an average fan of standard Thai-style curries like Red, Panang, or even Las Vegas style Three-color (Red+Green+Yellow). My suggested mod: Ask for your home-crafted noodles a little extra "QQ" or chewy al dente. And ask for a side of their home-made chili oil to step up the Szechuan influence. Normally I shun the fusion or "new-style" menu items, but this Curry Ramen bowl is stuff of dreams. Perfectly executed, temperature hot, unforgettably umami, and the exact drinkable curry broth viscosity that is no accident. This bowl is a champion, folks!

The dining area is still very sparse in design and coverage. The wait staff were still apathetic, and the wait times for things is still a little long. The Korean fried chicken was very tasty, sweet and salty Korean bbq sauce on perfectly fried wings was delightful. We opted for the pho, and that was very good. The broth was rich and flavorful, no need to season it was perfect already. The brisket was tender and still had a strong brisket flavor. There was a good amount of meat to the bowl and the noodles were fresh. The noodles did clump a bit, but they easily separated when agitated. All of the sushi was not as successful. The rolls lacked any significant flavor and missed some basic elements of sushi preparation. The rice was not seasoned, was not sticky, and the fish was roughly cut. The spicy rolls lacked spice and the crunchy rolls lacked crunch. It was presented well, just didn't show the level of care the front of the menu had. We informed our server of the sushi problems and she apologized but still charged us for all the sushi. Making an otherwise great experience not so great. I would recommend those who come here to focus on the front of the menu exclusively. Those dishes are stellar and are well worth the asking price. The sushi menu on the back is basic in flavor, pricy, and only worth having if you really need sushi. It does limit their menu significantly, but the quality difference is drastic.

While the name promises "Bao," I haven't ventured into that side of the menu just yet. Why? Because the Ramen is too good to pass up. The Meat Soup (Ramen) is my go-to. The broth is rich, savory, and clearly made with care. It's the kind of "fantastic" comfort food you want on a chilly Connecticut day. The meat is tender and the portions are satisfying. After seeing the menu, I decided to try their chicken katsu instead while my fiancé tried the beef ramen. We also got two medium bubble teas. Both drinks came out first. Still pricey but at least it was good. My fiancé ramen came out shortly after and we weren't too impressed. The beef broth was a muted color which looked more like miso. He said the noodles were sticky and pretty soft. I waited about 15 minutes until my chicken katsu came out (we were the only ones in there so it wasn't busy) and it looked promising... Good crunch but seems like chicken thighs were used as there was a good amount of fat in it. It quickly became kinda inedible because of how much sauce was covering the whole dish. I forget which.) Being CCSU s spring break, there wasn't much going on. That is, we saw a few pickups and DoorDash orders, but we had the full restaurant to ourselves. The waitress was quick, but the to-go orders left us waiting (totally normal, not a complaint.) First, the good: the ramen is a sizable portion. You can tell it's all made from scratch. It's not the saltiest thing you'll ever eat. The spicy is actually spicy, if you mix in all the chili paste they leave resting on the fish cake. I grabbed my chopsticks and dug in, and I was glad I got the $3.50 milk tea on the side (you get it for cheap with a bowl), though I found it very sweet. The pork in my ramen was crispy on the sliver of crust, and the rest was cooked to perfection. Many other places can do it like that, but if they'd messed that up, they'd lose some points. The bad is a very short list. Our ramen had vermicelli or angel hair instead of, you know, ramen noodles. Maybe that's their thing? All in all, a soup place next to the up-the-hill dorms is just what I needed decades ago. I'm rarely up that way these days, but I'd totally stop here even in the summer.
