Am a bit torn here. Food was 3.5 stars, maybe a 4. But the seating was just a nightmare at 1 or 2 stars. First the seating. Got there at 5:30 on a Sunday. They said about 15-20 min for a group of 4. 30-40 min passed and asked - they said, table was finished and waiting for them to leave. Then at about 50 min, they said they were clearing the table. Wasn't really seated until 1hr 10 min had passed. So, almost an hr difference. I told the woman that if they would have just told us that it was going to be a while, that we would walk around and they would call us to tell us when our table was ready. But this just got unacceptable - they give the impression that they don't want to lose the business. Also, there were spaces at the bar that if they would just hold for about 5 minutes, the would be able to seat 4 on the corner (2 and 2). Had been given the excuse of it being restaurant week but that only goes so far. Well, after we finally was seated, we waited.. and waited... table next to us that was seated about 5 min or so after us, their order was taken. Had to flag down the hostess and she took our order instead of the waitress. Told us that our order would be top priority to be filled. Being well intended, she comp'ed us an order of Gyoza but when we got the bill, it was on there. Sure, they took it off when I pointed it out but... still, not a great way to end the meal... oh, and of course, had to wait for waitress to finally come over to tell her because she left the bill and again disappeared. Now, the food. Took some pictures that you can see of the gyoza and yakitori. A bit on the expensive side for the yakitori - would also say they need to baste it a few more times to get a nice caramelization and thickness of the sauce. But not bad. Pork buns also similar comment, pork could use some more sauce or when they cooked, they could have braised a little further but not bad. Had the tonkatsu curry. Very good flavor. Pork katsu was nice and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The sauce was nice and thick. Others in our party had the ramen. Good taste. The portions are actually nice and good sized but the bowls that they use make it look much smaller. Standard fare but pretty well done. Went around 6:30p on a Monday and my friend and I were seated with no wait. Staff was incredibly friendly and very quick with refills and removing any plates, but not in a way that made you feel like they were hovering. For my meal, I had the gyoza, which I enjoyed. Some of the miso soups have nuts, so be careful on the order. Happy Hour 4:30-6:30PM daily. There is a waiting list on the wall across from the bar. They don't take reservations (supposedly. I'll get to that...) You can write your name down and walk away for a bit if you have time. We were 5th in line with a group of 3, and waited approximately 35 minutes (although I'm pretty sure we got skipped over for a group that didn't put their name down at all and were welcomed by the staff...). Note that if your whole party is over 21, you can elect to sit at the bar (which has about 9-10 seats) and they will ID you. Seating is pretty limited otherwise - I counted three tables near the front (capacity 3 each) and eight in the back (3 capacity 2, 5 capacity 4). Occasionally they'll also have capacity for two since there are benches, so they'll skip over the larger groups. Overall, the food was good but expensive. I got the tonkatsu (made spicy), my partner got the same, and my friend got the Katsu Don. The tonkatsu had a light broth that was pretty flavorful, but quite salty. The quantity was very small - I think I ate all of the noodles in four or five spoons. My friend's Katsu Don looked like a better quantity for sure. We got the takoyaki to share, which came out hot but wasn't otherwise noteworthy compared to other takoyaki. The prices are rather high for the quantity of food received. Edit: I am lowering my review to a 2/5 as my partner got food poisoning that evening from her tonkatsu. This was the only thing she ate that day outside of homemade fresh food, so we couldn't find any other culprit. Edit 2: 3 days after my review, I am lowering the score to 1/5 as we have several reported food poisoning incidents from the same night of eating at Fujiya (second week of January 2023). Between long waits, high prices, and the aftereffects, I would not recommend this place. We came in for lunch on a very rainy Wednesday. Part of the fun going to Fujiya is finding a place to park. This time I found a spot on the street a couple blocks away. It's paid parking but there is an app so if you need to extend your time it's no problem. We both got the vegetarian ramen and a yakatori skewer. The skewers came first so we ate them first. They were very good. The ramen was only so-so. Something about the flavor in the broth wasn't to my liking. This time we were sat in the back along the right side. Just around the corner from Walnut Street in Squirrel Hill is this treasure of a ramen restaurant like finding a pearl in an oyster! We were hungry and tired and nothing really appealed on Walnut street. And it was grey and raining to boot. But just around the corner looking remarkably like any back alley ramen or udon restaurant in Japan, is Fujiya. Complete with yakitori!! The atmosphere is so authentic it made me miss my year in Japan. Now the food. Tempura vegetables. Very fresh , very hot and absolutely not a drop of grease. I got vegetarian ramen which was a very generous portion with additional protein of tofu, was served with a tasty broth. It was very flavorful and not bland as is very often the case with vegetarian broths. Curry was ordered by the non vegetarian. I was told it was delicious and perfect for a cold rainy day. It had plenty of kick she said with a handful of tissues! We shared a matcha cheesecake for dessert. The matcha lover thought it was wonderful. I'm more a red bean paste gal so it wasn't my favorite but that was strictly a preference as opposed to flavor issue. Yummmmm, such excellent ramen for cold and bitter winter days in Shadyside! Visited a few weeks back for lunch with a group and we were treated so kindly and served very promptly. It's a small restaurant with cozy charm and lots of tables despite the tight space. I opted for the spicy miso ramen, which was SO delicious and flavorful. It was piping hot with lots of scallions and spicy flavor, but not too spicy - very manageable level of heat! It's a heaping huge portion of noodles and broth and could easily feed two people. They serve rice dishes and other authentic Japanese dishes in addition to their ramen menu, and they have a full bar as well. There are better ramen places in the city, but in location and price point it makes sense for me. This review isn't because of that. This review is because this restaurant scammed me. I am currently home sick with Pneumonia and I wanted to try another well rated ramen place in the city, Umami. I consciously made the decision not to get Fujiya as I thought that the food would not fit my 103.7 fever sick palette. I order what I think is Umami, only to find out is actually Fujiya (With the name Umami Ramen Haven) serving the exact same food they sell on their own (very well rated and used Uber eats page) but with different photos, names and descriptions in order to obscure who they are. I liked Fujiya, I take friends to drink here fairly often. Based on the 29 reviews the fake Uber eats page has, they aren't making very much money of this and they will be making less because I refuse to go here anymore and will likely suggest everyone I know stay away. Hope the owners are happy with the extra ~$1000 dollars in revenue a month. TL:DR Fujiya runs a second Uber Eats page under a different name serving identical food to their main Uber Eats page (which is different from a ghost kitchen which serves different food) presumably in order to steal customers looking for a different similarly named local ramen shop. read more

We added ourselves to the waitlist and just waited around 15 minutes. The server (Cee Cee) was top notch and the manager (Tiffany) was so informative and friendly. Food was spectacular! We ordered the Spicy Miso Ramen, Wasabi Garlic Edamame, and Tonkotsu Ramen. Fresh broth (reportedly made daily and simmered for 10 hours) for the ramen bowls was over the top. The place is small and when we walked in - we did not know where to go and it resulted in another coupler being seated ahead of us despite being there before them. Despite the initial inconvenience, the food and vibes were very good. It does have the authentic Japanese decor and menu to go along with it. The free meal we received was very good. The dumplings were some of the best I've ever had. The ramen was very filling and the spice level was just right - not too much but did have a little kick to it. My husband and I visited Fujiya Ramen for the first time on a Friday night. We arrived around 6:15p and waited about 20 minutes to be seated, which was to be expected. The atmosphere was warm and cozy, with table seating and lots of bar seating under hanging lantern lights. The team at Fujiya provided excellent service - everyone was friendly, efficient, and communicative. The food came out quickly but we never felt rushed. We were there to try their ramen, which according to many outlets is the best ramen in the city. We ordered shrimp tempura for our appetizer, and the tonkatsu ramen and chicken ramen for our main dishes. The shrimp tempura came with a dipping sauce and 2 pieces of tempura asparagus. It was delicious, however, the breading was heavier and more of a "batter" than what one would normally expect for a tempura. Then came the main event - the ramen! Sadly, we were disappointed by both the chicken and tonkatsu ramen. The broth lacked depth of flavor and tasted more like a salty chicken or pork broth than a rich, umami broth with layers of flavor and a long cook time. The onsen egg was a highlight, but the spinach had a slight unexpected floral taste to it and the meat was dry. We really wanted to love it... maybe we were there on an off night or didn't order the right things? Regardless, in future we'll probably stick to one of our favorite spots, Umami, if we're craving ramen in the future. read more

There aren't that many places in Pittsburgh that serve high quality ramen and okonomiyaki (especially the latter). This is one of those few places. I just tried their okonomiyaki. It was quite good! Already cut into pieces when I got it. I think I still slightly prefer the okonomiyaki from Teppanyaki Kyoto, but Fujiya still makes a solid one. There are quite a lot of bonito flakes. It's cooked well and it's quite airy. Almost like a pancake but savory. There was something chewy in the mixture that I couldn't identify, but it was good. The menu said there is pork, but I did not taste any. Some corn in there as well. Love the sweetish sauce. All in all, a solid place for okonomiyaki. The portion was fine but the place is a bit pricey (not too bad for Japanese food though). Good flavors! read more
