What we got: -Yummy roll (chef's special roll) - shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, avocado -Spicy tuna roll -Philly roll -Gyoza The rolls were thick, especially the Yummy specialty roll! I think the seaweed was a little crispy in my tuna roll, because there was a slight crunch that I loved. There was also an extra, uncut version of my spicy tuna roll, which we did not order, but twas a happy accident! My fiancé loved his Philly roll, and we split the Yummy roll which was just insanely good. And of course gyoza is always a good idea! It was a little pricey, but we ordered from Uber Eats, so the prices were hiked up (the Yummy specialty roll was $25)... not sure what the actual prices are like because the menu isn't available online from what I can see, but I'll probably go there to order next time! Upon entering the place I immediately had a feeling of, "no, I don't want to eat here". The place is very unorganized. Supplies everywhere. A TV is on and playing concert shorts of singers (have no idea who), singing American tunes. Not awful but strange. You order from a QR code and enter your table number, but they will present you with a bill at the end, again strange. Decor is a bunch of pictures of beautiful sushi plates, I am for sure they did not come from this kitchen. We ordered: Onion pancakes Crab Rangoon Beef ramen Chicken ramen Spicy combo sushi plate The order it came out: Miso soup (we were asked shortly before this what we ordered. I showed my email from my order, and said Ramen and Miso showed up). Rangoon's: strange texture to them. It was like an under fried ravioli but with cream cheese as filler. Chicken ramen (actually pretty good; not great) Beef ramen (not as pictured; fried beef chunks with gristle in them in a chicken broth- not beef). Looong pause where we thought we weren't going to get the rest of our order Sushi combo (upon looking at it, I called it sushi slop). This was by far the most messy sushi I've seen. I think I could roll better on my first try! It was falling apart as we were trying to eat it! Fresh watermelon (not ordered but I'm guessing it is replacing the traditional orange quarters). We got back from Japan a week ago and were missing the amazing food. Thankfully, my husband found Yukiyama. Wow! It was super authentic and we loved it. We ordered way too much food not thinking the portions would be Americanized. No matter. I'm happy to have leftovers for lunch this week. We loved the gyoza (dumplings). They were so soft, delicate and flavorful. They didn't need the sauce but the sauce was terrific. The pictures of their sushi looked good so I wanted to try it. The tuna roll was delicious and only $6. My husband loved his chashu (pork that tastes just like bacon) ramen. There were tons of noodles, huge pieces of pork and mushrooms. He really enjoyed it and was in the mood for ramen since we loved it so much in Japan. I got the chicken katsu (basically a cut up fried chicken cutlet or breast). It was so crispy, tender and flavorful. The portion was giant. It came with white rice, miso soup and the sweet and delicious katsu sauce that I love. This time they had a young lady waiting tables. She was friendly and helpful. Doesn't seem to get busy inside, I think they get a lot of delivery orders. I ordered the same two rolls as last time: Yukiyama and Ume shiso, and they were just as good as the first time. My bf had the spicy yellowtail and the Philadelphia roll... neither of them were my thing, but he liked them as well as both of mine! The food came out on a big wooden boat this time lol. The food was some of the worst sushi I have ever seen. I took one bite, and was immediately concerned that I would get food poisoning. I ordered two Tuna Raw rolls, the food was shiny with some mysterious slimy/oily texture. The rice was unseasoned and caked in sesame seeds, so all you tasted was sesame oil. Even the miso soup had unidentified red chunks in it, something I have NEVER seen in it in my life overall I'm preying my stomach doesn't betray me tomorrow morning. Yukiyama is THE place for best value. It's an affordable option that doesn't compromise on fish quality. If you're a fan of salmon avocado or tuna rolls, it's half the cost of most other locations. It's 6 pieces instead of the usual 8, but Yukiyama makes those pieces MASSIVE and absolutely STUFFED with fish. The rice in their rolls is well-proportioned and consistently prepared properly (not too sour, sweet, hard, or mushy). Plus, they're one of two locations in Pittsburgh to offer fresh wasabi, which has a much stronger and defined kick. Service is usually very fast especially for online orders. Limited staff, so there may be some delays during peak dinner hours. Cute Totoro banners on the walls, but no real decoration theme. read more

Yukiyama Japanese Restaurant, nestled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's Squirrel Hill area, at 2121 Murray Ave, north of I-376 west of Frick Park. the restaurant offers an casual atmosphere where you can indulge in a variety of good and fresh Japanese dishes. But before reviewing it's important to untangle the mystery of this locally owned and operated spot. I used a GPS and passed by it twice before going inside. It's because the large awning outside says "Top Chef Sushi" with a 203 phone number, but this is actually Yukiyama Japanese Restaurant and phone # is (412) 422-3120. I wasn't sure this was the right place but when we got the menus it was confirmed. I asked about the signage and history but there was a language issue as everyone I spoke with was Japanese and we couldn't resolve the issue as my Japanese is limited to hello, goodbye, thank you and a couple names of dishes. :-)  Now let's talk about the experience at Yukiyama and out last night's dinner on our visit to the Burgh. It's street parking, like almost every business is in Squirrel Hill, the atmosphere is very casual, the interior is dated but we quickly determined that their commitment to authenticity was evident in their traditional cooking techniques and presentation were outstanding. The menu features a range of options, including Ramen, Sushi, Hibachi,  Tempura, and much more. One of the most popular dishes at Yukiyama is the sashimi platter, which features an assortment of fish that sushi lovers will appreciate the assorted carefully crafted rolls and nigiri. There is no alcohol here but they have a nice assortment of teas and beverages.  We started with an order of Gyoza, their version of pan fried dumplings, and it's lovely presentation were spot on. My honey really enjoyed her fresh crab and California roll, #1 some thoroughly enjoyed his shrimp tempura and shrimp fried rice, and I was impressed with the delightful and generous Tonkotsu Ramen that had a creamy, thick, and rich pork bone broth, topped with chashu (pork belly), green onions, and nori (seaweed), very nicely done.  In addition to its dine-in services, Yukiyama offers carryout and delivery options and despite their Google page they do not require reservations and are open seven days from  11:10AM-10:20PM Bottom line: While their might be a little communication there's no misunderstanding that these folks know their way around a kitchen and put ourt an outstanding meal that will put a smile on your face. Came here when trying to find a restaurant and had an interesting experience. The restaurant was completely when we entered so there was more than enough space for our party of 8. Service was a little odd, one server brought out waters in styrofoam cups and he was in charge of bringing out the food. There was only one other server we saw and I think he's the chef and owner of the restaurant. Ordering food was a little odd as well, the owner said that if all the food was on one check he can take our order, but if it's separate checks then we should use the QR code on the menu - which turns out is missing a few items that are on the menu. The menu is fairly large, though, with a lot of different dishes. There is a huge vegetarian/vegan list which was nice considering half of our group didn't eat meat. We got the chicken and shrimp hibachi dinner and the shrimp tempura roll - both tasted really good and flavorful! The food did take a while to come out, though. It seemed like only one or two dishes were coming out at a time so it took upwards of an hour to get our food. A friend and I came for a Saturday lunch from finding it on yelp. I was initially attracted to coming for the Totoro decor as am a huge fan. The restaurant was completely empty, we were the only customers at that time. It's very spacious but not a huge restaurant so imagine it could get full some periods. There is metered parking on the street that you can use the gopgh parking app for. They have lunch specials which includes weekends. We had the spring rolls, scallop sushi $7 (forgot name), and chicken ramen lunch special ($14). The ramen is big enough for two people in our opinions as we had a lot left. After spending the night supporting our friend at her dance symposium, we went over to Murray avenue to try and find somewhere to eat. It was a little bit past 10 at night, so a lot of the restaurants had already closed. Luckily, Yukiyama was still open! When we sat down, we were the only people in the restaurants, so we were served right away. We had water in styrofoam cups, which was a little unusual, but we concluded that they did this because it was so close to closing. However, one of the cups at a hole in the bottom of it and water spilt out everywhere. To eat, we had the shrimp tempura roll, which were nicely sized pieces of sushi stuffed with a shrimp tempura. We had the gyozas to split, which we good but would have been much better fresh! The sauce that it was served with paired nicely with the gyoza tho! Lastly, the eel and avocado roll was probably our favorite. It came out a little warm and was delicious! I'm from NYC and have had incredible sushi throughout my life. This is definitely the best sushi in all of Pittsburgh. The fish quality is so good and the owner gets the fish from Japan. Prices are super reasonable. The portions are MASSIVE and the lunch special is such a great deal. The owner runs the shop on his own so service can be slow but he is the sweetest person ever. While we were there he gave us two miso soups and a pack of hichews for free. It's 14 dollars but there really wasn't any depth to the broth and it tasted almost identical to instant ramen from Japan. 3.5 STARS Yukiyama popped up on my Yelp a few days ago with 0 reviews, and since we were in Squirrel Hill and my boyfriend loves ramen, we decided to take the adventure and stop by for a bowl. the waiter suggested the purple sweet potato fries which were AMAZING. served with aioli, hot and crispy and in a generous portion, we couldn't stop eating them! the mango mochi ice cream was also a delightful dessert, perhaps a smidge more frozen than we'd like but still delicious and beautifully presented. honestly, we're wondering if we tunnel visioned into the ramen and this is perhaps a place that focuses on the sashimi/sushi. when we asked the waiter what the most popular items were, he quickly said sashimi, but I'm sometimes hesitant at newer sushi places, so I went for the duck ramen. it was too salty for my taste, the broth lacked the depth of flavor I wanted, and the noodles weren't limp, but they weren't springy either. the duck tasted like your standard Chinatown takeout duck. on the plus side, the portion was filling and the egg was cooked well! the waiter gave us space, but was attentive - our waters were always full and our empty plates were out of the way. the interior is cute and Totoro themed. we went early on a weekday for dinner so it was quiet enough to have good conversation. overall, a nice new addition to the squirrel hill scene, but probably not my place for ramen. read more

Our group was trying to find a restaurant to accommodate our large party on a Friday night and we ended up stopping at Yukiyama since it was not busy at all. We were seated right away since the restaurant was completely empty. Service was a bit strange to say the least. One of the servers brought us all waters in disposable foam cups and we were told to order our food online if we wanted to split the check. My friend and I split the chicken hibachi dish and the shrimp tempura roll. Despite being the only ones in the restaurant, our food took forever to come out and did not come out all together so we had people in our group almost done eating while others were still waiting for some of their dishes. From my experiences with Yukiyama, I've had absolutely delicious sushi impressively presented for take out that has been marred by sub-optimal pick-up experiences. Food: Sashima combination with chef's selection: I've got to hand it to the chef, whoever is putting these combinations together has continued to provide an impressive variety of sushi. Everything I've had, mackerel, scallop, squid, salmon, tuna, yellowtail, whatever-tail has tasted of very high quality. Ame-ebi - sweet shrimp with its head fried. The head is super crispy (just be careful not to stab your gums with its sharp shell). Again, tastes fresh and also high quality. Overall, I've had all but excellent experiences with their food which I would rate 5/5. However, in the last 2 of 3 pick-ups the restaurant did not have the order ready for whatever reason, and I've had to wait close to 30 minutes both times for them to prepare the order. Despite the delicious food, the wait is certainly not a plus - and because of what I believe is a language/culture barrier figuring out where/why the order is not ready has also been difficult (3/5 experience). However, when the experience runs smoothly you will be treated to a delightful Japanese meal! read more

Overall I would say you are better off somewhere else for sushi or ramen. I ordered the duck ramen, a spicy tuna, and a philly roll (the two rolls I judge all sushi restaurants on - for better or for worse). The philly and spicy tuna rolls were ok. Nothing particularly great about them, but also not bad. I think you can get better sushi at Sakura (or my favorite squirrel hill sushi joint - Te cafe). The ramen was underwhelming. The duck was more bone than meat and not nearly enough of it to justify all the bones. The broth was bland and the vegetables seemed all over the place, and didn't fully belong. All of this would be a 3 star rating if the services were not incredibly sub par. We were each pre portioned an amount of soy sauce (that was not enough for either) and never saw our server to get more. Finally upon finishing, we were mostly ignored until we got frustrated and walked up to pay our bill. The decor was dark (we went at lunch time) and you could see sunbeams through the curtains and made evident from the smoke from frying food. I tried this restaurant for the first time today. I was overwhelmingly satisfied that they offered salmon don (raw salmon over sushi rice), which most sushi restaurants in the area do not.
