Hibach is a hit or miss. Today it was a miss. There are different chefs here along with several grill tables. The chef we had cut the chicken way too small. It was the first protein on the grill and last thing off. The table behind us had chicken cut up twice the size of ours. Fried rice and veggies were good. You also get a bowl of iceburg lettuce heavily coated in dressing and a watery broth with a mushroom or two and green onions. I did mention about the chicken when the bill rolled out. First time I ordered from here I came inside and did a to go order. The lady at the register was so nice! She was patient and helpful and explained the menu to me. I wasn't really a fan of the Kaki Fried (fried oysters). I love oysters, I just wasn't feeling the fried oysters. I probably wouldn't get them again. I ordered their side salad and sushi and they tasted really fresh and had bigger portion sizes for their sushi than the other places I've been to. Sushi in a strip mall? Fujiyama defies expectations! I've been here a couple times for sushi now, and have been really pleased. The Specialty Maki Rolls are good and flavorful, and we loved the a la carte flavors of the Unagi roll as well. Service is really friendly and good. It's a popular place around dinner time for couples, families, girl's meet ups, so you may wait 10 minutes at peak times. I'm looking forward to trying the Hibachi side, which seems better for larger groups. There's a song and light show when it's your birthday. My family and I frequent Fugiyama often whether it's to pick up a quick bite or to celebrate a birthday around the hibachi table. The sushi is always presented beautifully and very fresh. Sometimes the roll pieces are a little large to take down in one bite but hey more bang for your buck, am I right? This week I put in an order to pick up on my way to visit family in the hospital (sushi is our comfort food) and I noticed how well the rolls are always rolled - never falling apart and I really appreciate that. Some of my favorites are their spicy tuna (I add avocado and cucumber), spicy crab and the Futo maki. Their signature roll options are extensive and always really good. After visiting pretty much every sushi place in MKE, we've circled back around to Fujiyama a few times lately, both for lunch and for dinner. My conclusion: Fujiyama is the best "overall value" for sushi in MKE. Note that I'm not saying it's "the best sushi" period or that it's "my favorite sushi" but that you get the most value for your dollar here. First off, the rolls are about the same price as most other places (specialty rolls $12-15) but they are seriously the biggest rolls I've ever seen. Ever. At most places (ahem, Kanpai) rolls get big because they use too much rice. Not at Fujiyama - they stuff those rolls full of stuff. Lots of stuff. Good stuff. My old boss used to tell me "your strong point is your weak point" and Fujiyama is a case in point. I love that they have 2 pages of Americanized sushi rolls but I consequently find that I can't make a choice? Do I want the American Dream? The Sexy Lady? The Angry Bird? What do I want????? Same deal with the huge size - I mean, let's be honest - bigger is better, amirite, ladies? But when the roll slices are too big for me to fit a piece in my mouth (go ahead with your "that's what she said") it makes me sad. All that said, the quality is really good, they pump food out quickly, service is friendly and the overall value is absolutely there. No, they aren't necessarily the "best", nor will they compare to whatever place you loved so much in San Fran or NY but Fujiyama does a fine job for what it is. Our chef was great, very funny and friendly. We all enjoyed our food, portions were big. Everyone really liked the mustard and ginger sauce. I'm not a sushi connoisseur; I've only ever had it a handful of times. As an appetizer. And then once from the supermarket. And then again from the supermarket. And, maybe, even a third time from the supermarket. And you know what? It was good. So good, in fact, that I finally made the leap to an actual sushi restaurant. And yeah, I AM giving it 5 stars! Mark G. and I went on a Wednesday night and were promptly seated. After looking over the extensive menu (how many freakin' ways are there to prepare raw fish?), we surrendered and admitted to our server that we didn't know what in the hell we were doing. He very kindly made some recommendations and then we perused the menu some more. We ordered a beer for him and a Tokyo Tea for me. Others have compared the TT to a Long Island without the coke, but I would have to disagree. Mine tasted like pure gin with *maybe* a couple other boozes mixed in. It packed a punch, but I ended up ordering a Sierra Mist to help get it down. Our sushi selections were the California roll, the Transformer roll and the Godzilla roll. This is where I learned that sushi can be cooked, too. The Cali roll was good and a nice introduction to newbie sushi eaters, such as ourselves. Good practice for the chopsticks, as that was all we were given! Apparently, it contains cucumber, a vegetable I wouldn't normally eat. Guess what? I now eat cucumber. Occasionally. In sushi. The Transformer roll was delicious and loaded with all kinds of yummy who-knows-what (I was already feeling tipsy, as I arrived with an empty stomach and the Tokyo Tea was hitting me), including a large smattering of fish roe which I happily ate, being only recently introduced to it. The Godzilla roll, for me, was the star of our dinner. The flavor of the sauces it was topped with, as well as the roll itself, made my taste buds scream with delight. There was that fish roe again, popping like tiny little bubbles of happiness on my tongue. As mentioned above, by this time, I just couldn't take the flavor of my drink anymore and had to order a Sierra Mist and use it as a chaser. I finally had to admit defeat and let Mark have the last piece of sushi, too. People keep mentioning that this place is in a strip mall and you know what? SO what? It has damn good food, the atmosphere is for everyone and there is ample parking with easy access to other businesses in the area. Sushi not your thing? It's ok, they have hibachi too! Ordered take out because I have been too sick to go to the restaurant. I knew that I would miss the show but at least I would have the yummy food that I had a craving for. Ordered 3 meals of Chicken Teriyaki after we were assured that it was what we would have gotten at the grill. Paid extra for the fried rice and for extra sauce. When I got to the chicken dish, I was horrified! There were canned vegetables under my chicken! Peas, Lima beans, green beans and carrots... Straight out of the can! The chicken was dry and tasteless. The only things worth eating were the soup, the salad and the rice that we got. Truly disappointed in what we received, I called to speak with a manager. He told me "you must have ordered the teriyaki and not the hibachi". He said that it "happens sometimes". And that "some people really like it". Ugh. I would like to speak with those people! I told him that we asked before ordering if Chicken Teriyaki is the same thing that is cooked on the grill, the woman assured me that it was. So I don't understand how or why I paid $25.00 per meal for something I could throw together in my kitchen?! The final nail is that the manager offered nothing but excuses and an "oh well". No attempt to make things right in any way shape or form. Done with Fujiyama! RESPONSE to the manager: I ASKED while ordering and was ASSURED that teriyaki chicken was the same as what was put on the grill. No where in either description of the meals does it mention that a $20 chicken meal would be prepared with mushy, tasteless canned vegetables! Why? Okay, first and foremost, they are NO LONGER doing half off sushi on Mon, Tue, Sundays. It's discounted. I.E.: Rainbow was 12.95, but is dropped to 8.00 on the discounted nights. This is, in no way, a complaint. But I just wanted to make sure you knew. I forgot to take a picture of it, but they have a menu specifically for discounted items, along with their regular menu. Let it be known, all of their top notch rolls are not on this discounted menu, hence our bill of $101 (including tip). Sigh. I thought I found my cheap sushi place. This is not it, although it was certainly good. Okay my fellow sushi lovers, crab stick is not sushi worthy. Well at least not for mine and my gfs palate. We try to avoid crab stick at all costs, but a LOT of rolls had this ingredient. We got: White Swan Roll ($12.85) Godzilla Roll ($13.95, deep fried) Osaka Roll ($8.50) Rainbow Roll ($8.00, special only) Tuna Amazing Roll ($14.95) The Osaka and Rainbow have the same basic flavor profile, so personally I'd choose one or the other. Rachael liked the Rainbow just a little better but honestly both were great to me. The rainbow might have had crab stick in it though? But luckily the actual fish shines through. We LOVED the White Swan and Tuna Amazing. The tuna amazing was like nothing I've ever tried. My mouth did a happy dance. I'm not even a fan of pepper tuna and I really enjoyed this one. The Godzilla left more to be desired. Deep fried and mostly rice. It would have been better if there was more fish on the inside; a better ratio if you will. Otherwise it was drenched in sauces and we liked it. As for the restaurant. Seemed pretty small actually and fairly busy on a Tuesday night. I didn't really get to look around and I wasn't being too observant. They either don't have many tables for those who are there solely for sushi or they were so busy they ran out....becaaaause we sat at a hibachi table. No complaints, I loved that they utilized the space that wasn't being used by hibachi for others so that there wasn't a long wait. Waiter was really nice but not too attentive. The bus boy was actually more attentive! The Ginger Ale? No thanks. And a small Sapparo was $4.75, which is the most we've ever paid for one. We ordered an app of Gyoza. Standard, good. Wouldn't get it again. We saved the sauce from it to have with our sushi. It was good! And I never put soy sauce on my sushi. It also cost extra to have spicy mayo on the side, which I never used, so that's lame. Oh! And it was my first time trying Nigiri. I got the Uni. So. Good! Overall expensive, but to be expected. Returned on a Sunday night with my boyfriend to enjoy some discount sushi. We both told ourselves we weren't very hungry but ended up with 6 sushi rolls on a bridge! There was a HUGE line of people waiting. Our server was very friendly and apologized for the crowd/long wait. They have a discount sushi menu on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays, so they get pretty busy. She brought us miso soup on the house. Getting right down to it, I decided to order one special maki and some sashimi. I am not a fan of things like cream cheese, jalapeños, or mayo in my rolls, so I ended up going with the American Dream Roll, which was a pretty basic shrimp tempura and eel roll. It was actually very good. Nice flavors, good texture for the rice. For the sashimi I went with white tuna (Not good. Old, rubbery, unpleasant taste), yellowtail (Better, but didn't taste fresh), salmon (Good), and scallops (Excellent. Best thing I ate). All of these items I bought off the discount menu. I love Fujiyama for one a few reasons but one of the maj. reasons: deeply discounted sushi on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I've been to other sushi places in Milwaukee but I always come back to Fujiyama because the price is right and the sushi is delicious. The customer service is always amazing, the servers are always helpful and give great recommendations. They also go above and beyond when it comes to birthdays or just making someone feel special, which is another plus and a great reason to bring someone from out of town. A favorite in my family. We have been coming here for years. One side of the restaurant is a sushi bar and the other has hibachi where they cook your meal in front of you. We normally sit on the hibachi side of the restaurant. Sunday through Tues is when we normally visit. On those days certain hibachi items are discounted as with sushi. I enjoy the shrimp or steak where the misses loves the sushi. Saki maki being her favorite. Cool place to come with a group of friends or to celebrate an occasion. JoJo one of the chefs truly makes it a fun and funny experience every time. I have laughed out loud on every visit when he is our chef. If I could I would ask for him every time. The server randomly asked me if I was from WI, mentioned my physical looks, asked if I had a husband, asked if I was Indonesian, how old I was, just a lot of personal questions. It was a little busy but didn't have to wait long until our chef came to prepare our food. I have to say it was a lot of fun. It's not often you get sake shot into our mouth from a distance. I order the chicken and steak combination with noodles. The steak was really tender and the zucchini that was grilled was good and I'm not a fan of this veggie either. The food was good, everyone went with hibachi lunch and I had the steak which was pretty good, though a bit overcooked for medium-rare. One downside was that the chefs were so fixated on their routine and didn't seem to be dynamic at all. They seemed to interact even less at the table with most of the kids at it. They don't know how to make rolls service is slow, the waiter disappears and never returns. I ordered a spicy tuna roll, and they serve me crunchy tuna in a roll with no cucumber, no avocado. The food was average... not very impressed.... the ginger dressing in the salad is sweet... hard to get use to when you've had it somewhere else :-) also, the soup seemed to lack flavor... very bland! Should be called Fuji-yummy. Good hibachi (teppanyaki) lunch. Dinners are a bit expensive, but lunch is generally also expensive but more reasonable given what you get for it. As is usual at a Japanese steakhouse, the chef performs a routine which involves some basic things such as the flaming onion volcano. We have found that the chefs at Fujiyama seem to be more friendly towards kids than some other places. We were also most impressed at their response to a bit of miscommunication regarding allergens; they apparently take that issue very seriously. One member of our group happened to be allergic to carrots, and our chef went and had a separate order of rice made up in the back - after he had already made it up on the grill (with carrot shavings). We didn't have to ask or prompt, he just had someone go and do it, right quick. Good service is something that's lacking in too many restaurants. Not a problem here. Very impressive overall. I am a sushi fan, but by no means a sushi expert. I think this place is one of the best in Milwaukee, and I've been coming here since they first opened. (Anyone else remember when they were voting to keep the loud,drum in the enterance? So glad that one fell by the wayside.) The rolls are excellent, and coming on a Sunday, Monday or Tuesday is the best way to score a deal. Our last trip, we ordered 6 rolls and 6 pieces of sushi, and our tab was less than $60. I enjoy raw fish, so I often find that the fancy rolls with tons of sauces just masks the flavor of the fish. I tend to order a combination of things to try to balance things out. On our last trip, we ordered Tako, Yellowtail and White Tuna Sushi. All were very good, and the rice was cooked well with the right amount of sushi vinegar. The octopus had a nice chew factor going on and the yellow tail and white tuna were fresh and buttery tasting...so good. Our other raw fish rolls included a Yellow Tail Roll, Mars Roll and Rainbow Roll, and Philly Roll. All were very good. I have had better Rainbow Rolls, as the raw fish on top seems to be getting thinner and thinner. We probably would not re-order the Philly Roll. This was a first time order for us, and the amount of cream cheese was just too overpowering. We loved the Mars Roll. There was plenty of tuna and salmon atop this puppy. We tried the angry bird roll this trip, as loved the tempura fried shrimp on top. The spider roll is an old favorite of mine. I enjoy the crunchy fried soft shell crab and the sauce. Out biggest complaint is that sometimes the rolls are not wrapped tight enough and can fall apart when lifted off the plate. This happened with more than once roll on our last visit. I will always come back for the sushi. It really hits the spot, As a side note, I personally find the whole hibachi experience to be cheesy, but if its your thing, give it a try.
