I'm always looking for awesome eating places on my way home from Disneyland. I picked out Fukada, because with over 1500 reviews (averaging 4 stars) and a predominately Asian community that knows food, how could I go wrong? My family and I arrived at 5:30 and there was already a waiting list! We waited about 15 minutes and were finally seated. I was torn between noodles and their seafood salad combination. I figured I should watch my carbs, so I went with the healthier option, the salad. For the add on, I got the veggie curry, that was saved for a future meal. I barely had enough time to use the restroom, because within 5 minutes the food came out. At $14.95, I felt like it was a little too pricey for what I got. I know the seared albacore and salmon was probably cooked in the morning, and all they did was throw the pepper onion dressing on top prior to serving. It was good, but I wasn't amazed. I had a small taste of the veggie curry prior to packaging it to go. The curry's flavor was unique. I'm not quite sure what they do differently, but the taste had some added seasonings that I wasn't used to. It wasn't bad, just different. I'm completely jealous that my sister got the sweet and spicy chicken appetizer as part of her meal. It was soo delicious and worth coming back for, that I'm bumping this review up from 3 to 4 stars. All in all, I would say everything here is on the pricey side, but given the affluent neighborhood it's considered average. Just a little tip... get there when it opens to avoid the wait! read more

They open at 11:30 for lunch, but come at least 20 minutes early to beat the lunch crowd. We arrived around 11:10-11:15 and my group of 8 wrote our name down before tons of parties arrived. When they open the doors, they go in order according to that list. What to get: LUNCH SPECIAL: $9.95 --Hot/Cold Udon/Soba noodles --Choice of Don (i got the spicy tuna per request of Yelp) What I got: --I chose the Hot Udon and the broth was delicious!! It has a sweet taste to it - not bland like at other restaurants. It comes out at just the right temperature so you don't have to wait to eat it. --My second dish was the spicy tuna bowl with wasabi on the side and sliced seaweed on top. This dish was mediocre in my book, probably because I don't have an appreciation for spicy tuna in general. --I would've liked to try the Katsu Don. Service: --Very fast service. everyone at our table got at least one of their orders within about 10 minutes of ordering. They probably just make a whole bunch in the back because their lunch special is so popular. --If you can wait til 1 for lunch, the lunch crowd will be gone. Irvine has various dope Japanese joints and Fukada is one of them. The food is good but doesn't really cut that amazing status. I ordered the Udon and Oyako don combo which was pretty solid. What I really appreciate about the place is not only the energy and restaurant design, but its big portions. Most Japanese places I've been to lack the bang for your buck but this place was great. I got the Katsu Don and I felt that the food was more salty than I expected. I got the Katsu Don because the server recommended it as a popular dish but I don't understand why people would order this. My friend ordered the Spicy Tuna Don and that was pretty good. Fukada is my "go to" Japanese restaurant. Their food is authentic Japanese. Prices are very reasonable. Although they no longer have a sit down restaurant with service, you can still order your food and eat it at some of the tables set up inside or outside of the restaurant. I really love their salmon skin salad and their spicy tuna on brown rice. It's usually my order. Ambiance is like a take out restaurant but their service is excellent. They are open for lunch and dinner but be aware that they are so popular that there usually is a line outside before they open their doors both for lunch and dinner. They are so busy with limited staff that it's difficult to call and place your pick up order. They also don't have an option to order on line either. So, the only downside is to go in person and order your food. It's all worth it though. read more

If you like simple but quality Japanese food, Fukada is the place for you. Fresh seafood with a home style flair, Fukada offers comfort food goodness in a bowl. Even arriving at 5:30pm, there's already a long wait for a seat inside (~30 minutes for two people). Including tip, for two people ($18 each) we definitely ordered enough food to split between us. Being so packed, I don't blame them for only refilling our water when prompted. We ordered: 1. Oyako-donburi with Seafood Salad combo: be aware that any of the rice bowls ordered in a combo will be smaller than ordering the regular bowls. The seafood salad comes with seared, generous pieces of salmon and tuna. The salad is lightly dressed with their popular (miso? Citrus-y salad dressing). The oyako donburi is fairly simple. It's a a chicken and egg combo simmered in a dashi stock+other sauces served over warm rice. You have the option of choosing white or brown rice. It reminds me of the oyako donburi my host mother in Japan used to feed me, so I have very nostalgic feelings towards this dish. The oyako donburi is executed very well, but might be boring for the more adventurous foodie. 2. Spicy Tuna Don Probably one of their more popular dishes on the menu. The spicy tuna is unlike your typical fast-food sushi spicy tuna mix. It's not very spicy, but the flavors definitely give it a little kick. The mixture of tuna, spice, and mayo? gives the dish a nice creamy mouthfeel and you can taste how fresh their tuna is. Again, like any of their donburi you have the option of choosing white or brown rice. Came not particularly craving to eat Japaneezy food, but the food here was good nonetheless. When we entered we were greeted by this guy who took us to to our seats. Since we had only a party of a two we had to share a table with other parties. They put us in the middle of this huge cafeteria looking bench. The table was was wider than average table witdth so it was a little weird for my taste. But the seats were cushioned so it was not bad. The ambience is comfy, with the whole wood theme. The servers looked Japanese and were friendly and quick to serve us. I ordered their dinner combo. I had the hot udon noodle sansai and had a side of the chicken rice. The portion was pretty big for one person but I guess its alright for the the price. It was 10.95 for the dinner combo but if you wanted to order the udon separate it was 7.50. The side chicken sweet egg rice was huge. This can basically be a two person meal. I couldnt finish the rice and just finished the sansai udon. The udon base was good and the sansai (mixed wild(?) veggies LOL) was delicious too. overall a good experience. The decor had a nice jap flavor to it without trying too hard to be whitewashed. Why is Fukada so one-of-kind? I can never find any other restaurant that is like Fukada! Love this place. I LOVE their lunch combos. My go-to is the is the noodle combo with cold udon noodles with tempura toppings and I will ALWAYS get it with the spicy tuna bowl with brown rice. It's a perfect meal for a hot summer day. The sashimi salad is also delicious, as well if you don't want to eat so much carbs like I always do. For as long as I've been going here (maybe 8 years now?), there is always a wait! My husband and I now just default to takeout and we enjoy it outside and this way, we can take our dogs as well. Fukada is perfect. Just everything is perfect. It is one of the restaurants that I must visit when I'm in Irvine, because I crave the hot soba sansai and tempura. I love how efficient everyone is. This place gets super crowded, and even when they are busy, I still get my food quickly. Never an error. I love how the owner of the place stands in the open kitchen and looks out into the dining area to see what's going on, to make sure everyone is enjoying themselves. That's quality control right there. I love that you can come here and eat by yourself at the bar, along with other people eating at the bar -- slurping noodles and focused on the food -- and you don't feel out of place because it's all about the food here. It's kinda like those clubs that have you stand outside to attract people but once you get inside, "No One Is There". I dunno... Anyways...here's what we came up with for food: 01. Organic Miso Soup ($2) - 4 Stars Miso soup with tofu, wakame and vegetables - Much smaller bowl of soup than most places I've been to. Simply and good. The fact that it stays HOT is a plus. 02. Came here on a random weekday near 7:30pm with friends as one of them suggested it. I absolutely love Udon so I was really looking forward to trying Fukada. We did have to wait about 30-45 minutes for a party of 3 which was unfortunate as it was a little chilly that night, and the inside waiting area wasn't big enough for us to go inside. As we waited in the cold, our appetites built up so I was REALLY looking forward to food at this point. I got the Sansai Udon, my boyfriend got their Mix Tempura Cold Soba, and our friend I believe for the Kinoko Udon. I was honestly very disappointed at the broth - I was expecting a lot of flavor as I usually drink most of my soup for dishes like these, but I barely touched it. I absolutely love clear, clean broths, but this was just too bland for my liking. I also understand there are different kinds of noodles considered as "Udon", but I was expecting the typical thicker noodle - Fukada serves noodles that are on the thinner side but are still considered "Udon" noodles. Just a personal preference, as I enjoy the thicker option. My boyfriends Cold Soba was good, but nothing extraordinary. We both definitely like different restaurants for the dishes we ordered. Staff occasionally checked up on us, but they did forget to give our friend her Green Tea even after we asked for it a second time. Fukada is one of those places I dream about when I'm homesick 2000 miles away in Chicago... especially when cold weather hits. The beauty of Fukada's food is in its simplicity -- everything tastes clean and nothing about it appears special, but the food is just so good! I get the same thing every time I go (don't even open the menu when I go now) - Hot Sansai udon with spicy tuna don (white rice). For the amount of food you get, prices are very decent. One word of warning for new people -- wait can get LONG. I actually go there before it even opens (there's already a line in front of the restaurant...) so that I can get seated right away. I swear I wasn't trying to eavesdrop, but during a moment of silence as we were stuffing our faces (It was a LONG wait. We were starving) but I could hear the couple next to me debating whether or not they want to travel to Honduras, which so happens to be known as the murder capital of the world. Whenever I'm craving some Japanese noodles, I always hit up Fukada. There's sometimes a wait when you go around rush hour times, but I actually recently realized that if it's a nice day out, you can actually order your food to go (instead of waiting) and eat outside the restaurant where they have chairs and tables! We pulled up about 5:45pm and there was a line. Wtf. This is hella early for dinner. But the place was full and a wait list started. Good thing though it still moved fast. We sat at the bar and both got soba with sansai. Hot for him, cold for me. We also shared a unagi-don with brown rice. This place did not disappoint. Service was nice, fast, and the food was very satisfying. So simple, yet so good. I preferred the cold soba over the hot. Overall, place is clean (restroom too!) and the food tastes delightfully fresh, simple, and yummy. Price is very reasonable and they do accept credit cards. Parking was easy for a Thursday night. I did love the fish on the salad; it came with a lot and the pieces were big. On the other hand, the Spicy Tuna Don was great. Helps to get in line early and sign in. When waiting for a table, I usually pick up one of the free copies of the magazines that feature new snd current Japanese restaurants in OC/LA area. Overrated and I think I expected too much. Had the seafood salad and the albacore chunks were huge. What I didn't like, was that there was too much dressing and so it was too salty. I think I would have given this place 4 stars if it wasn't so overloaded with dressing. Also I got the combo with the spicy tuna bowl. I have to say the pink color was already unappetizing. Fukada is one of the first restaurants that I fell in love with here in Irvine. It is one of my go to comfort meals that never disappoints. This small Japanese restaurant specializes in noodles and donburis, with the lunch and dinner special being the primary point of contention on the menu. With the combination you get a healthy portion of noodles with a bowl of your choice. You can choose between soba or udon noodles, I enjoy both but most of my friends love the bouncy and chewy udon noodles. The toppings are either tempura flakes or sansai, which are seasonal mountain vegetables. Tip: You can get half and half of each if you want a little bit of both! As for the rice bowls there are many options such as katsudon, tunadon,and unagidon. Personally, the star of the restaurant lies in the spicy tunadon that they are famously known for with their patrons. It consists of a large dollop of chopped tuna with spicy japanese mayo, although it is named spicy it is relatively mild. I'd recommend mixing some wasabi with soy sauce to pour over for a stronger kick. I prefer to mix it completely with the rice to create a evenly distribute bowl where every bite has tuna mixed with the rice. Once I start eating the spicy tuna don, I can barely constrain myself until I am completely finished with the bowl. Other than the spicy tunadon, I enjoy getting the katsudon when I'm feeling something more meaty, it has a nice sweetness to go with the savory eggs and pork cutlet. Pricing wise, Fukada is a great bang for your buck, especially in Irvine, with the lunch special being $10.95 while dinner is $12.95. As for parking, it is in a relatively quiet plaza so there is plenty of parking to be found. During peak hours there will be a wait to get seated as the restaurant is relatively small, however, they turn over customers fairly fast. If I'm in the mood for a hearty bowl of noodles and rice, Fukada is one my first options. I love to go here during rainy days! All in all, whenever I go to Fukada, I know the quality I'll be receiving and I've always walked out full with a smile on my face. read more
