The wood work and decor give this place a very warm comforting feel. The music is crap and really clashes with the rest of the whole vibe; good for the boba place next door though. Came here on two separate occasions and enjoyed it both times. The quality of food is done well and is consistent. The people working there are also very sweet and kind. One of the guest that came with me said the food is really simple but I like that about Fukagawa. It's simple, done well, and doesn't make you feel gross after. I've tried both breakfast set c's. One with steak and the other with mackerel. I also tried a friend's breakfast set with salmon. All were great but I prefer the sets with grilled fish. They cook the fish over charcoal and it really elevates the breakfast. I always get my eggs dashi maki style because you can get scrambled or sunny side eggs anywhere. Fukagawa is a gem in Gardena for traditional Japanese food and you can tell by the clientele. All generations of Japanese people dine here so you know it's authentic. read more

It comes on a bed of shredded cabbage. You get either a side soba or udon. I chose he udon, where you choose from either Osaka or Tokyo (sweeter) style. I opted for Osaka style. It was delicious. Their sake prices were really good that we were surprised, maybe we will come here to drink and try the hot pot next time. This review is really for the fantastic outdoor seating that they brought back! Heated, blocked from the wind, great service and not busy on a Friday night. First time ordering something on the menu besides breakfast. The katsu was well fried and piping hot. My partner said something akin to "wow, Kagura levels of great katsu". A waitress greeted us as soon as we entered, and despite being the only staff member was able to serve multiple tables and keep on top of everything. Each guest is given hot tea (I think it was barley tea). There's an extensive menu of authentic dishes. This is not an authentic Japanese. I ordered Tempura Tei and the tempura were exactly the way it should be. For $25+ plate, it should have added variety to the tempura. The pork curry and chicken curry were also disappointed. The curry did not have the traditional Japanese aroma. They have Japanese breakfast all day! That's really great idea since many of us Japanese living here don't prepare these breakfast of Miso soup, eggs, fish, pickled radish, nori( sea weed), and rice. I had Saba ( mackerel) with daikon oroshi ( shredded radish) and it was just what I needed. My partner had fried oysters. The whole place reminded me of old fashioned quaint inn in Japan. Our waitress was working alone with very pleasant attitude, smiling and greeting to everybody and ultra efficient, filling hot sea, answering phones, managing bills and cleaning promptly. I can't understand how this place has 4.5 stars. If I could leave 0 stars I'd seriously consider it. The portion sizes were horribly small and the food was simply tasteless across the board. The katsu curry cutlet was about the size of a McDonald's hamburger patty and the curry itself was so bland, it makes my at home box curry taste gourmet. Also, what is with the miso soup. I have never had miso soup with sliced raw onions and it was also tasteless and cold. Even the cabbage slaw they served was just shredded cabbage with no dressing. If you brought me packaged instant udon, it wouldn't surprise me if it tasted as good as what they served us. Nobody at our table finished their miso soup even though we left unfulfilled and unsatisfied. I feel bad for the server who seemed like she was the only server for the entire restaurant. I gave them 1 star for at least being nice and then taking off the edamame from the check because we complained about it having been served with empty shells. However, they probably should have just provided complimentary edamame for the entire restaurant for the slow service. After we left we went to Tokyo central next door and each had a bearded papa. Even after having bearded papa, my son in law was still hungry that we had to stop of at McDonald's to get him a snack. It's hard for me to fathom how this place has such high reviews. I came in last Sunday at 1pm and ordered two dishes: Pork Fillet Katsu Plate and Niku Nan udon. It took over 1 hour for the udon to arrive and almost 1.5 hours for the Katsu Plate to arrive. For an hour, not a single plate of food came out. It was like they were making 1 dish at a time or their kitchen staff had left. When asked how much longer, it did not give a good response and just said it was coming. If I had known upfront that I would need to wait over an hour for the food, I would not have dined here. If they have kitchen staffing issues, they should not continue to accept customers. There were over 20 customers just sitting there with no food. Now that I'm done ranting about the wait times. Let's talk about the food. Niku Nan - The beef was overcooked, chewy, and not good quality. There was also not enough noodles. Pork Fillet Katsu Plate - This was actually good. The pork was juicy and the panko was nice and crunchy. If I were to come again and I'm not sure I will since looking at the reviews, the wait time issue isn't a one off thing, I would order this again. I really wanted to like this place and I did enjoy the katsu, but the wait time was just too long. They did give us a 10% discount for the inconvenience. read more

We decided we wanted to try a traditional Japanese breakfast. I've been looking for a place like House of Little Wonders in Brooklyn but haven't been able to find a situation like that. The restaurant is located in a plaza with a Tokyo Central, Book off, and miscellaneous stores. Because of covid - we weren't able to dine inside but instead - ate on the few tables they had set up in the outside alley. We came right as they opened at 11 and I could see people were already calling in to order. As soon as we sat down, parties started to trickle in to fill up the few seats they had. We ordered the Combo C with the grilled fish (mackerel) and the half order of Soba (Tokyo -style) which was a sweeter broth. The service was good - we were checked in often and the wait for the food wasn't that long. Other patrons spoke Japanese so I'm assuming this might be the real deal. The food itself was a little on the sweet side. I liked the fish and the tofu. I also read that their soba was hand-made. The cuts definitely look original so I'm convinced they were fresh. The broth for the soba, miso soup, and the dashi eggs were sweeter than I was expecting. I would probably do scrambled eggs next time and try the different broth for soba. Overall the experience was good and it felt very healthy in comparison to our original plan for breakfast burritos. I loved how everything tasted fresh and clean and not too greasy. I'm not sure if I would be able to commute all the way to Gardena for this but it was a nice little adventure. read more

We walked in and waited... and waited for a table. It took a little bit of time to be seated. Service is a tad slow, but I'm more about the food. We ordered 3 different kinds udon. The mushroom udon, niku udon (beef), and the nabeyaki udon. The udon noodles were good, nice and springy when you bite into them. My wife said the mushroom udon broth was a little bland. The beef udon and nabeyaki udon broth was flavorful but lacked the depth. The tempura that came with the nabeyaki was ok. Wish the tempura coating was thinner and crispy. I did appreciate that they used a larger shrimp so that I can taste the shrimp. Overall the food was good, but it was a lot more expensive than our usual udon place. read more
