Both I really enjoyed, just depends on if you like a more firmer meat to softer meat. Both were still crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Had seen that Kimukatsu had recently opened at the new Tokyo Central in Torrance on PCH and had wanted to try it. When I first arrived, it was not super busy, maybe 3 other tables with customers/diners. There was no one to great you and standing at the entrance no one came and asked if I'd like to be seated for over 5 minutes. I did put my name in on the Yelp waitlist kiosk, and eventually a server came out to check the kiosks, then noticed me and asked if I was dine in or take out. This will be my only complaint about Kimukatsu, they need staff to be more aware of new customers walking in. I ordered a chicken and shrimp combo. The food was excellent, the salad was flavorful, the chicken katsu hot and crispy, while the chicken inside was moist and tender. The seasoning for the katsu was perfect. Shrimp was good as well. My wife and I had a lunch date here with her seeing "a place I'd like" on a recent shopping trip to Tokyo central. It was tasty and filling with the meal set. In fact I wasn't able to eat all of the rice, which was very good quality along with the pork, of which I ordered the garlic one. As delicious as the pork was, the pork broth miso soup, and a salad all filled me up where I couldn't finish the wife's katsu. The server was great with water, food delivery, and getting the check. I did try to use the QR code but my AT&T service was weak there so it was really laggy to the point of not being usable. They will need a WiFi hotspot if they plan to use that exclusively. My hubby got the "pork loin tonkatsu" and I got the curry with chicken katsu (I think you can get any katsu with curry, maybe double-check with the waitstaff). I visited Kimukatsu near opening, and that Special Pork Cheese Millefeuille Katsu Set left a bit to be desired. The pork was definitely on the thinner end, and it was also a tad dry. The breading was remarkable, though, and it was crispy and crunchy without being a hint of oily. There were refills on cabbage and rice. The rice was fluffy and just the right portion for the modest amount of meat. The cabbage was also tasty and a good amount, though the dressing definitely needed a refill. Service was fairly quick throughout, and the meal was satisfactory. May return again in the future to satisfy katsu cravings if nearby. The ambiance is simple and clean and good for a quick meal with family. We've been here twice, and overall had a good experience, with a few things that could be improved. First visit: We ordered the Special Pork Cheese Millefeuille Katsu Set ($19.50), Special Pork Garlic Millefeuille Katsu Set ($19.50), Kid's Plate ($8.75), and Chawanmushi ($3.25). The portions were a great size for the price, and we appreciated the free refills of rice and cabbage. The only hiccup was with timing - my husband and I received our meals, but our daughter's kid's plate didn't come out with ours. After waiting a bit, we asked a server, and she quickly apologized and brought it out, mentioning it should have come first. We also asked for a booster seat, but they didn't have one - however, they kindly offered a pillow for our daughter, which we appreciated. When we ate our food, the dishes ended up being lukewarm, not sure if it was because we had to wait for the kid's plate...but we didn't think much of it since the food was still good. Second visit: I ordered the Ume Oroshi Set, and once again, the millefeuille katsu wasn't very hot. The flavors were still good, but it felt like it would've been much better if served hot. Maybe this one was not hot because of the Ume oroshi? I preferred the Pork garlic over the Ume oroshi. Overall, the food is tasty and a good value, especially with the generous portions and refills. Kimukatsu is located within Tokyo Central. It replaced Van Show Sushi & Bar. Hubby & I came here on a Saturday evening. There was about a 40 minute wait time. It was pretty accurate and we were happy to be seated a little ahead of that approximate time. I joined the waitlist using my phone and the Yelp App while outside the restaurant. If you opt to use the Yelp App, you also need to use the kiosk (iPad) to check in so they know you've arrived. Service was good at first, but then as it got busier, the service slipped a little. We ordered a hot tea that never came and we didn't bother to ask for it. I opted for the Special Pork Cheese ($19.50) which includes Salad, Pork Miso Soup, Rice, Pickles, & Chawanmushi. I really liked the pork katsu. However, I think I would get it without cheese next time. When you order any of the sets, you can request as much rice & cabbage as you need. The Chawanmushi is included in the sets for the Grand Opening special, but I hope they keep it on the menu that way permanently. It rounds out the meal nicely! This millefeuille katsu is a new to me type of katsu where they thinly slice the pork and layer it together to form a cutlet. It really was easier to eat! I also liked that they cut the cutlet into more manageable segments. Hubby got the Katsu Curry ($18.75). The curry came out tepid. Not sure why? It was sort of bland as well. So, it was just okay. Very well known tonkatsu chain restaurant from Ebisu. They are known for their millefeuille style (layered thin slices of meat) and so had to try it. The restaurant is very bright and spacious and the service is excellent. True the pork is very tender but I prefer thicker cuts of pork (just my personal preference). I had the katsu set which was nice but the portion was slightly small. It's also cut into nugget sizes which reminded me of chick fil-A pieces. Again, just personal preference. I like to savor each part of the meal set and I thought the miso soup was excellent--very umami, with slices of pork and carrots. I also ordered chawan mushi to sample and it was very authentic and tasty. Tsukemono (pickles) were elegantly presented and crisp. Do not come here if you need a quick lunch. Assuming it would be somewhat faster than other places because it is in a grocery store, but nope. We waited over 30 minutes for our food which is pretty ridiculous. I understand its a new spot, but I've seen much smaller operations with less employees push out katsu faster than that. The prices are high $19-20 for a plate, but the katsu was delicious- perfectly crispy and thick pieces. Service was really friendly but poor, never refilled my water the entire time. Id recommend they let people know of the wait time for food up front because they are well aware it takes way too long. Kimukatsu's speciality is their multi layered pork cutlet. Instead of a single thick piece of pork, they use multiple thin layers of pork together stacked on top of one another, breaded and fried. Their menu features five special millefeuille katsu. They also have a katsu curry, a chicken katsu and a seafood katsu. All of the sets include salad, Tonjiru (pork miso soup), oshinko (pickles) and unlimited rice and cabbage. The price range for sets is $18.75 to $21.50. For today's grand opening, they also included free chawan mushi (steamed egg) with each gozen order. I got the Special Pork Cheese Millefeuille Katsu set. I was an instant fan of the crispy, juicy and tender pork. The cheese added a smooth, savory richness that matched perfectly with the crisp of the katsu. I also liked the Tonjiru. Only a couple of Eat-in customers were in the restaurant. Order was ready and I picked up the food around 1:40pm. (40MIN wait for (2) simple orders) Here is my full review. Food: 1 out of 5 Tonkatsu was not crispy at all. Very small tonkatsu portion and small rice portion. Tonkatsu sauce was just a pack of Standard Otafuku sauce. Nothing original in terms of presentation and quality at all. Put it in the just like Bento box sold at Tokyo Central Food Section. Katsu Sandwich is unexpectedly small. Maybe smaller than MD kids meal. Price $23.75 for Oroshi Kimukatsu and $8.95 for Katsu Sandwich. You can buy the same quality Tonkatsu Bento at Tokyo Central for $9.00. A lot bigger portion with the same Otafuku sauce. Authentic Japanese Tonkatsu Restaurants normally serve Oroshi Tonkatsu with Ponzu or other Japanese original sauce. I will pick a Tonkatsu Bento Box from Nijiya Market and Tokyo Central rather than KIMUKATSU. Taste same, bigger portion, No 40min ridiculous wait time, and less than 1/2 of the price. If you are looking for Authentic Tonkatsu in Torrance, try MARUSHICHI or KAGURA TONKATSU. If eat in, I will go to Kagura. If to-go, I will suggest MARUSHICHI. Pay premium, you get the premium tonkatsu here. Service: 1 out of 5 No one at the counter. They don't even care even the customer at the entrance. Please note that their KIOSK system does ask for your phone# and provide the order#. However, their system does not have a function to notify the customer if the order is ready or not. You may contently pay attention if your order is ready or not. No need to pay tip for TO-GO order as you don't get anything and they don't care about your order. My order was just left at the back of the counter and food was already cold and watering. Even doing a business in US, the owner should have a hospitality mindset as you normally see in Japan. きた！ Located inside the new Tokyo Central along the PCH is Kimukatsu, which hails from Ebisu district in Shibuya ward of Tokyo and specializes in mille-feuille katsu. The katsu is made up of 25 thin layers of pork, which is why this is referred to as a Mille-feuille (French for "thousand sheets"). If you'd rather not have pork, there are also chicken and seafood options, as well. The dishes come in sets, which means they include a cup of sauce for your katsu tonjiru: a hearty pork miso soup that gives a complementary taste profile to the rest of the meal chawanmushi: a savory egg custard sliced cabbage a bowl of rice! I ordered the Ume Oroshi set, which comes with grated daikon and a thick plum sauce on top. The plum sauce was very savory and a wonderful touch. It reminded me of getting sour plum onigiri, and really brought out the salty sweet contrast with the pork cutlet. The cutlet itself was divided up into around 10 smaller cuts, and had a great texture, and remained moist for me. The chawanmushi custard had a great thickness, somewhere between silky and medium, and had slices of fish cake at the bottom, which helped give the egg its savory taste. The pork miso felt super healthy, as it included chunks of daikon and, I believe, burdock in it. If you're sick, this would be something you'd want to drink to help you recover. It was very comforting. Speaking of comforting, the table we got was in the corner, and felt like a private booth. It was nice having a bit of privacy, although I'm sure any of the other tables would be fine too. I also noticed that many of the customers were Japanese, hearing them speak Japanese in the tables around, which made me feel good that this place seems to be pretty authentic. There was plenty of "うまい" said at the neighboring tables. A note if you're coming: while there is some seating available if there is a wait, it is a bit limited, having only 6 or so chairs. So use the Yelp Waitlist feature to join the waitlist and get notified when they're ready for you. Otherwise, you can also just peruse the Tokyo Central while you wait. Also, you can use the QR code on the table to quickly order via phone if you want to get started early, rather than waiting for a waitress. Overall, I'm super happy to have a Kimukatsu in Torrance. I greatly enjoyed the one in Sawtelle when I first came to LA, and am happy to exclaim that this one is even better than I remember! read more

Since there were many people waiting, we decided to order to-go and eat at the food court instead. We waited about 30 minutes for the food to be ready, but unfortunately the katsu and rice were not warm enough -- they were closer to room temperature. I ordered the plum oroshi (daikon radish), but most of it stuck to the to-go lid, and there wasn't enough katsu sauce. Decided to try Kimukatsu after seeing that they opened. I was curious about MilleFeuille Katsu, so we were able to get added to the wait list through Yelp during our drive to the restaurant. When we arrived, we were already number 1 on the waitlist. We had a short wait and was seated promptly and our server, Kristie was helpful and very friendly. Unfortunately they don't serve any alcohol, so we ordered a pitcher of cold water. We each ordered the Special Pork MilleFeuille Katsu set. The salad was delicious and was a nice start to our lunch. The miso soup was very tasty, but could have been served hotter, it was luke warm which to me was surprising. The tonkatsu, pickles, cabbage salad and rice were all top notch. The lack of beer and the luke warm miso soup dropped a star off my review. The temperature of the miso soup is an easy fix, but the lack of beer or sake is something we take seriously when selecting restaurants to enjoy meals together. read more

My first (and only) time here was soooooo disappointing! I expected much better. The tea was lukewarm and completely spent and stale. I could not even tell what kind of tea it was. We were never asked for refills either. We got our food long after others who arrived after us. It probably took 20+ minutes, and we were a party of 3. There were only about 10 other customers at the time. If there were appetizers on the menu we could at least have had something to munch on while we waited. Why does the katsu curry not include soup? The other sets include soup. Is adding soup too much to ask? The katsu curry was not enough food! Just 4 small pieces of katsu. The curry was below average. There is only the mille feuille type of katsu. Why? It's not a big deal. The usual cut of meat would be denser and more filling. The chawanmushi had no flavor. It should have some kind of dashi flavor but it was just egg and water. I did not get a separate spoon so I used the spoon I got for the curry. There are no tonkatsu sauce containers on the tables. The tartar sauce needs a lot of improvement. The sauces were served in small plastic cups. $3.25 for 1 fried shrimp!? The loud oldies music was distracting and not a good match. The free refills of rice and cabbage don't make up for any of the faults. I will not be going back. At this rate this place will not last another year. read more

Food and service was amazing! We ordered 2 different katsu sets- the garlic w thinly sliced pork, and the naban. Salad was fresh with a delicious dressing. The soup is not the typical miso, but a nice house made soup with veggies and meat inside. The rice and cabbage is unlimited. And the egg custard was a nice addition! They specialize in Tonkatsu dishes, which is lightly fried pork, or chicken dishes. The lunch set included a salad, miso soup,, shredded cabbage, and rice. It was a delicious and reasonably priced. I was so excited when I heard we were getting a tonkatsu restaurant inside Tokyo Central in Torrance. When it first opened, all orders came with a chawanmushi. And they had plenty of tonkatsu sauce in a nice pottery container so we could pour what we wanted. Now they eliminated that, and they give us a small chintzy plastic container of sauce. When my friend asked for more, the waiter didn't look too happy. And no mustard either, unless we ask. But the worst part of this was that the tonkatsu was lukewarm - every single time (I've given them chances by going 5 times). And I hate the way they cut the katsu into "cubes" like they're trying to make the small katsu look like there's more. And this last time, the rice got harder as I was eating (a sure sign that it was microwaved). So disappointing. read more

Tonkatsu style is different at this place ( they use sliced pork ) versus whole pork filet pieces at Kagura . But Kagura cooks there Tonkatsu perfectly and there's a nice crunch when you bite into the moist pork .Tonkatsu here was over cooked and very dry . Didnot finish and left like 2/3 pieces . Very good! Delicious katsu plates with reasonable prices and good, courteous service. Unlike some restaurants that try to offer too many different menu options, Kimukatsu chose to keep it simple with a focus on authenticity, which I appreciate. As part of the new Tokyo Central market on PCH, there is plenty of parking in a nice area, and you can do a little shopping if the market is open. Hopefully, they'll keep prices reasonable. I agreed with other reviewers about the wait time. I can understand this is a new spot and expect to wait. However, what I couldn't understand is multiple tables arrived 10-15 mins after us sent in the order got their food before us. Our waitress walked by our table multiple times and didn't notice our empty table during the 50 mins while we were waiting for food. If my kid didn't notice that other tables came in after us already eating and almost finishing their food, we would still be waiting. After I told the waitress, she quickly gave us our food and the set my wife got was lukewarm as it was sitting in the kitchen for 20 mins already. So, her katsu was chewy and not crispy. The katsu on the other two sets was ok. The positive side was the generous portion of rice. We like katsu and it was the best food we had in Japan when we visited in December. Just finished having lunch at this new restaurant. Service was very good. Our waitress was cheerful and attentive. Food was good. First time having kimukatsu. It was good, but I still prefer the traditional tonkatsu. One thing I found out of place was the hard rock music they had playing the entire hour we were there. Maybe play elevator music or traditional Japanese music to fit the ambiance. But definitely will be back due to its convenience inside Tokyo Central market. read more
