I came here after watching a movie at Del Amo, shoutout Godzilla minus one and ate at Red Rock with a buddy of mine after it. It also was Memorial Day so it was quite busy here. We put our name down inside the restaurant and waited for more than an hour and a half to be seated. Inside the restaurant it was really small and seems like it's a fast paced environment to eat and leave. I kept on checking on the table in the meantime and there were plenty of seats open for people to sit at but the waitress wasn't calling people in. It wasn't efficient at all but I felt bad because she was by herself doing everything. Red Rock was clearly understaffed but I feel like the process and the wait time was unacceptable. Even though the service was slow inside, the to-go orders were every crazier. We met someone who was waiting for a while too. Like I said, not trying to be too negative but #1 the calling people for them to come back #2 there are tables that are open and not calling guests in are both inefficient and can find new ways to make it seamless for their staff and customers. Food was good though, I got the American Sliced Beef Don which was a mountain of sliced beed, pure protein and rare. It was very red so it felt a level of raw but not sure because I order Medium rare or even Medium steak. We got a omurice + pork katsu ($21) and a large kobe beef don ($30) FYI they do require that each person have either an entree or a drink, and that rule is enforced. The food came out super fast, the pork katsu was yummy! Loved the spicy sauce it came with, it wasnt too spicy at all. The only thing is one of my slices was 100% fat, and the pork seperated from the breading which made it hard to eat. The kobe don was the highlight though honestly. This place is my go-to place for curry omurice in Torrance! The restaurant is very unassuming, inside a large strip mall with a Japanese market. However, the wait can be fairly long, depending on the time that you go, so I definitely suggest getting there as they open or a little before usual meal times. The inside is fairly small and cozy with bar seating available. The staff if also quite tiny, with two servers and a couple chefs. The food they make in that tiny kitchen is absolutely extraordinary! Stopped by here on Memorial Day and luckily it was still open! I called many times to make sure they were open, but they weren't picking up the phone... so we took by chance and visited here and it was indeed open on a holiday. There was only one main server taking orders, serving, and cleaning up, so she was very busy. She's definitely rushing all over the place. The restaurant is quite small, so expect a wait when it does get a bit later. We came around 5:30, just 30 minutes after they opened and we still had to wait a bit after the first wave of customers. We were uncertain if the beef don would be good so we went with a small, but wow we should have gotten a large cause it was so good! Not knowing LA has Red Rock and I've been wanting to try this place for like forever. Seeing one of my friends posting it and got uberly excited that it's available here. We got it with extra raw egg topping. Along side, we got extra Chicken Kaarage. The beef was juicy and tender, but the flavor itself mostly was on the rice given the sauce was more mixed into the rice. It was luscious, but probably I set too high of expectation that I wasn't like blown away. In fact, the kaarage got me hooked more with unique batter coating and super juicy chicken. This was my third time ordering the sliced roast beef. The first two times I had it, it was excellent, which made this visit especially disappointing. This time the meat looked different and had far too much sauce on it. There was a dark soy-based sauce that was much more noticeable than before. On my previous visits, the white sauce was the main added flavor and the darker sauce was minimal. This time the dark sauce dominated the dish and changed the flavor. The meat quality was also different than previous visits. It was chewy pieces and had a lot more connective tissue. One piece was so chewy that I eventually had to spit out a large amount of connective tissue. At that point I was no longer enjoying the meal. I really do not like returning food, but this dish was not good, so I sent it back. The waitress spoke with the chef and later told me it was "the same as always," but that was not my experience at all considering how much I enjoyed it on my previous visits. Instead, I ordered the 7 oz galbi set. It came with rice, miso soup, kimchi and bean sprouts. The kimchi and sprouts were delicious. The miso soup was extremely plain with only green onions and no tofu or seaweed, so I mostly skipped it. The galbi had a nice beefy, fatty flavor, but it was extremely chewy and over half of it was fat or connective tissue, so I would not recommend it. The rice was fine. I also tried the beef and potato croquette, which I really liked. Despite the disappointing food this visit, I still appreciated parts of the atmosphere. We first visited red rock in Osaka 7 years ago and my wife loved it, and when she found out there's a Torrance location she wanted to try it out. This location is far less crowded than Osaka one, which is a big plus, I was worried we needed to wait to be seated. Despite the location being small, it has nice Japanese jazzy vibe and we loved it. Oh this is a special place!!!!! I have always wanted to try Red Rock but couldn't while I was abroad because the line was sooooo long. So hearing there was one in Torrance made me so excited to check it out! I visited with my party and we were seated right away. The place itself is a little small but still able to accomdate quite a few people. The menu has all the most delicious looking options from omelette rice to steak bowls to the famous roast beef to croquettes. We were able to try all those things I mentioned and it hit the mark! The portion size was appropriate. The menu offered many options. They require that each person get one entree (excluding kids I think). They have a sign that informs customers dishes may come out at different times depending on when they're cooked. My friend recommended that I come here. The bad: The men's bathroom was closed for maintenance but they let us use the women's one. The prices were slightly higher around $25/per bowl. The interesting: The indoor has a slightly more upscale feel (perhaps because of the colors and lighting). My experience at the Red Rock Torrance location was underwhelming. The service wasn't friendly, nice, helpful, or fast. Most importantly, the food itself was very underwhelming. I don't know if I just didn't order the right item or what, but it wouldn't be somewhere I would take my family or recommend to a friend. I ordered the katsu with omu rice w/ garlic rice and demi glacé sauce. I don't know why but my food was very tepid in temperature even though my seat let me watch everything being cooked. The sauce was lukewarm and the garlic rice had a very artificial garlic flavor. Both the sauce and the rice left a horrible aftertaste even hours later. The katsu looked visually appealing but didn't taste good. The batter fell right off of the meat every time I tried to pick it up. So I kept ending up with a naked greasy flat meat that tasted very bland and unseasoned. The egg omelette part tasted very greasy, slimy, and rubbery. Just not my jam. I was also not given any cutlery and the server never came around to refill drinks, ask about the food or if I needed anything. I really sure could have made use of more napkins and a knife to cut my gigantic silvers of sad katsu. And order something to drink too because the water I got had no ice and it was straight up tap water. By the time I finally finished eating the plate of food, I felt exasperated and just wanted to get out asap. The seating I had by the kitchen was hot and the restaurant had no air conditioning or circulation. The server was not only slow but also very snarky. She asked me if I needed a to-go box for the piles of fallen batter from the katsu. The only time she sped up was when I asked for the check. Even then, she didn't come back around for good 5 minutes and didn't give me the chance to ask to pay by ApplePay. This just delayed my checkout experience further. In sum, I wouldn't revisit unless someone else insists we visit and I order a different dish or something. Red Rock is a fantastic restaurant located in a small plaza. The interior is a tad small with a couple tables and bar seating, but it exudes a chic style that elevates from the standard fare. The wait times vary from immediate to lengthy depending on how many people come in and party size (exacerbated by limited seating). The service is swift and courteous and the table is usually set before you sit. The menu has a variety of rice (and beef) centric dishes. The ones I had was spicy curry with steak, Omurice with Hamburg and demiglace, and Rosst Beef don with raw egg. The spicy curry was delicious with a mild spice that picks up steam that melds with the tender steak cut and rice. The hamburg steak is meaty, delicious with a rich demiglace to add a nice richness. This couples well with the slightly liquid sheet of egg and garlicky rice (or Ketchup rice if preferred). The last visit was the roast beef don, thin tender strips of beef over a bed of rice with yogurt sauce and raw egg yolk. As recommended, I mixed it all together for each bite to comprise of a hit of yogurt, sweet and tart; the richness of the egg yolk, and the hit of savory from the meat. The rice across all dishes was well made Japanese rice. A pristine canvas to hold all the flavors together.
