Red Rock lives up to the hype! A Japanese friend recommended this spot and I finally understand why. The atmosphere is quaint and transported me straight back to Japan -- such a nice touch. We shared the Kobe sliced beef don with raw egg and the fluffy omu-rice with hamburger steak in demi-glace sauce. For the rice, you can choose garlic or tomato -- we went with garlic on our sweet waitress's recommendation, and it was a great choice. We also got a side salad and iced green tea to cool off between bites. Everything was so flavorful -- perfectly savory without being overwhelming, and the portions were just right. The beef was incredibly tender, and the hamburger steak was just as good -- not dry at all. The demi-glace sauce was perfect. Went 30-mins after opening on a Saturday evening and there was already a wait (which means it must be yummy!) Wait for two people was probably 15-20 minutes total, not too bad. I originally learned about Red Rock when I was in Japan. A local girl told me about this roast beef place that serves this tower of thinly sliced roast beef with a horseradish yogurt sauce. I don't even like horseradish, so that didn't exactly sell me lol, but somehow the sauce doesn't really taste the way I expected and the whole thing works. So when I found out there was a Red Rock in Torrance, obviously I had to see how it compared. I came right when they opened, so it wasn't busy. They make everything fresh to order and even have a sign telling you to be patient. I ordered the smaller roast beef bowl and added the egg. Still good, and the egg definitely makes it better. But the surprise was the hamburger steak. It was only around $13, and normally this isn't something I'd get excited about. I'm usually not a huge fan of giant meatball/meatloaf-type things because I feel like the inside never has enough flavor. Then this came out covered in this super dark gravy and I wasn't expecting much. It was bomb. I actually think I liked the hamburger steak more than the roast beef, which I absolutely wasn't expecting. The roast beef is still good, but I'm really glad I tried something different instead of only ordering what I already knew. There were several other things I wanted to try, including the omurice, so I'll definitely be back. This is my second time here within a few months. The food is good and the beef quality is great. Hamburg steak is quite hard to find in the U.S., and I finally found it here. I really like their Hamburg rice! This time I came mainly for the Hamburg and also ordered their bestseller, Roast Beef Don. Wow, it really deserves to be a bestseller! The sauce they pair it with coats the rice and creates a delicious bite with every spoonful. Roast beef don: 5/5 GET THE EGG!! you won't be disappointed. I came here after watching a movie at Del Amo, shoutout Godzilla minus one and ate at Red Rock with a buddy of mine after it. It also was Memorial Day so it was quite busy here. We put our name down inside the restaurant and waited for more than an hour and a half to be seated. Inside the restaurant it was really small and seems like it's a fast paced environment to eat and leave. I kept on checking on the table in the meantime and there were plenty of seats open for people to sit at but the waitress wasn't calling people in. It wasn't efficient at all but I felt bad because she was by herself doing everything. Red Rock was clearly understaffed but I feel like the process and the wait time was unacceptable. Even though the service was slow inside, the to-go orders were every crazier. We met someone who was waiting for a while too. Like I said, not trying to be too negative but #1 the calling people for them to come back #2 there are tables that are open and not calling guests in are both inefficient and can find new ways to make it seamless for their staff and customers. Food was good though, I got the American Sliced Beef Don which was a mountain of sliced beed, pure protein and rare. It was very red so it felt a level of raw but not sure because I order Medium rare or even Medium steak. Finally got a chance to try Red Rock tonight. We waited about 30-40 minutes before being seated. Once seated we ordered and our food showed up pretty quickly. The place is nice with everyone eating and having side conversations with one another. The servers were so nice and attentive. We ordered the 10oz Ribeye, curry katsu with rice, and the omu-rice with hamburger steak and Demi glaze sauce. The steak was absolutely delicious and cooked perfectly medium rare like I enjoy. I have been wanting to try this place for a while and seeing the good reviews on Yelp, I finally went and enjoyed it! It's a small restaurant located inside a plaza with plenty of parking available. I wouldn't recommend bringing a big group unless you don't mind being split up. There's usually a wait but was able to sit at the bar. We got the Omurice with Hamburg Steak in the demiglace sauce. This has been my new go-to hidden gem for Japanese food in the South Bay. Located in a small strip mall, parking isn't too bad. This restaurant does close in the middle of the day, so dinner can be pretty busy. They have a sign up sheet to put your name and number down to call you when it's ready. There's not a lot of tables inside so be prepared to wait. I fell in love with their omurice with pork cutlet in demiglace sauce. Stopped by here on Memorial Day and luckily it was still open! I called many times to make sure they were open, but they weren't picking up the phone... so we took by chance and visited here and it was indeed open on a holiday. There was only one main server taking orders, serving, and cleaning up, so she was very busy. She's definitely rushing all over the place. The restaurant is quite small, so expect a wait when it does get a bit later. We came around 5:30, just 30 minutes after they opened and we still had to wait a bit after the first wave of customers. Once we were seated, we decided to order the American Sliced Beef Don (small size) and the gyutan plate. We were uncertain if the beef don would be good so we went with a small, but wow we should have gotten a large cause it was so good! The beef was extremely soft and the sauce all around tasted really good with the rice and all. The beef tongue was also pretty nice, but a bit tough for me, wish it was more soft chewy! Although, overall flavor was really nice. The beef don especially was really good. There's also a Arcadia location but the prices seem a tad bit cheaper here. Not knowing LA has Red Rock and I've been wanting to try this place for like forever. Seeing one of my friends posting it and got uberly excited that it's available here. Tons of the reviews mentioned great things about it as well, so no wonder when we reached on Saturday lunch time, there were around 5 people on the wait list. It fortunately moved relatively quickly especially as we're willing to take counter seat and there were only 2 of us. The venue did have decent amount of seats, but certainly would be tougher for bigger group. Their signature dish was certainly the Sliced Beef Don, yep that one that looked like Volcano. We got it with extra raw egg topping. Along side, we got extra Chicken Kaarage. The beef was juicy and tender, but the flavor itself mostly was on the rice given the sauce was more mixed into the rice. It was luscious, but probably I set too high of expectation that I wasn't like blown away. In fact, the kaarage got me hooked more with unique batter coating and super juicy chicken. I'm a picky eater to be honest, so trying this food was definitely out of my comfort zone, but I really really liked it. The sauce in the meat made it really good for me. This was my third time ordering the sliced roast beef. The first two times I had it, it was excellent, which made this visit especially disappointing. This time the meat looked different and had far too much sauce on it. There was a dark soy-based sauce that was much more noticeable than before. On my previous visits, the white sauce was the main added flavor and the darker sauce was minimal. This time the dark sauce dominated the dish and changed the flavor. The meat quality was also different than previous visits. It was chewy pieces and had a lot more connective tissue. One piece was so chewy that I eventually had to spit out a large amount of connective tissue. At that point I was no longer enjoying the meal. I really do not like returning food, but this dish was not good, so I sent it back. The waitress spoke with the chef and later told me it was "the same as always," but that was not my experience at all considering how much I enjoyed it on my previous visits. Instead, I ordered the 7 oz galbi set. It came with rice, miso soup, kimchi and bean sprouts. The kimchi and sprouts were delicious. The miso soup was extremely plain with only green onions and no tofu or seaweed, so I mostly skipped it. The galbi had a nice beefy, fatty flavor, but it was extremely chewy and over half of it was fat or connective tissue, so I would not recommend it. The rice was fine. I also tried the beef and potato croquette, which I really liked. Despite the disappointing food this visit, I still appreciated parts of the atmosphere. However, the wait can be fairly long, depending on the time that you go, so I definitely suggest getting there as they open or a little before usual meal times. My son made an online order but when he got there, there was a sign on the door saying they were closed because of a plumbing issue. I was rather peeved because we already paid. What was up with that. I had him pick up food from another place but on his way home, he gets a call from Red Rock saying the order is ready. Say WHAT? I've avoided reviewing Red Rock for years, which is strange because I've probably eaten enough of their menu by now to qualify for some minor form of tenure. I remember this space before Red Rock was Red Rock. I've eaten here, ordered it delivered, worked my way through the roast beef bowls, omurice, curry, hamburger steak, shrimp, yakiniku, beef tongue, potato salad, basically enough of the menu that this isn't based on one unfortunate day. And the frustrating thing is, the food is mostly good. Sometimes very good. Red Rock has always been a slightly peculiar proposition. A mound of rice buried beneath ribbons of nearly rare roast beef with an egg on top isn't exactly an easy pitch to everyone. Neither is omurice. Soft egg over rice, surrounded by curry, perhaps topped with a hamburger steak or a couple of fried shrimp. There's a lot of softness happening. Halfway through, your mouth occasionally starts requesting a different texture. But when it works, it works. The roast beef is tender. The sauces are good. The curry has that comforting Japanese richness to it. The fried things arrive crisp when you eat them there. Their lunch meats can be excellent. Even the cooks, whom you're practically dining with given the size of the room, have always been friendly. Then everything surrounding the food begins to feel slightly absurd. This is a tiny restaurant. Tiny. There are evenings when arranging four human beings around a table seems to require the logistical planning of an amphibious landing. Somehow there can be two people working the floor and you still find yourself wondering whether anyone has noticed you exist. Over the years the service has ranged from perfectly fine to bewildering. The kitchen has rarely been my problem. It's everything between the kitchen and my chair. Then there are the portions and pricing, which seem to have been determined independently of one another. The lunch plate can arrive with genuinely good meat, some rice and a scattering of lettuce that looks less like a salad than evidence that a salad recently passed through the room. And the potato salad, I'm sorry. It's good potato salad. But whenever potato salad starts approaching the price of an actual meal, I begin inspecting it for truffles, caviar or perhaps a small Treasury bond hidden underneath. So far, nothing. Delivery is another gamble. This food wants to be eaten immediately. Roast beef sitting in a container on its journey across the South Bay loses some of the reason you ordered it in the first place. Curry thickens. Fried shrimp contemplates its mortality. Eat here if you can. And that's ultimately my problem with Red Rock. After all these years, I still like it. I still come back. There are dishes here I genuinely crave. On food alone, I could probably talk myself into four stars. But a restaurant is not merely the thing the cook puts on the plate. It's the room, the welcome, the pacing, the portions, the price and the strange little choreography required to make the whole thing feel effortless. Red Rock has the food. The restaurant was fairly small but cozy, with a bar where you could watch the chefs cook if you so choose. We ordered the large US-Kobe Beef Don and the regular Cut Steak Don with a raw jidori egg added to both. Both were very good and quite a bit of food--I definitely think a regular beef don would've been enough. The total after tax came out to about $67, which is a bit pricy to me, but worth it because the food was really good. The Kobe Beef Don was my personal favorite, as it went so well with the raw egg, white sauce, and rice. They put a certain sauce on the rice that makes it extremely good. We first visited red rock in Osaka 7 years ago and my wife loved it, and when she found out there's a Torrance location she wanted to try it out. This location is far less crowded than Osaka one, which is a big plus, I was worried we needed to wait to be seated. Despite the location being small, it has nice Japanese jazzy vibe and we loved it. Actually a great place for a food date. Grilled beef tongue tastes great and my wife who doesn't like beef tongue liked it a lot, much better than the trendy tsubasa place inside mitsuwa. The beef is beefy and it's a good dish; however, on future visits, I'd prefer their rice and yakiniku (Japanese BBQ) options as I prefer the savoriness of a nicely seared meat. My wife went with their Japanese omelet rice with pork katsu and demiglace sauce. The sauce is rich and savory and it's a perfect complement to the egg and ketchup rice. I know my wife would definitely come back for this dish. She liked the crispy and juicy textures of the fried pork; however, I think that she would like to have this dish with Japanese style hamburger (hambugu) next time. The portion size was appropriate. The menu offered many options. They require that each person get one entree (excluding kids I think). They have a sign that informs customers dishes may come out at different times depending on when they're cooked. My friend recommended that I come here. The bad: The men's bathroom was closed for maintenance but they let us use the women's one. The prices were slightly higher around $25/per bowl. There is bar seating and tables, and since we were with our 1 year old, we chose a table. My husband ordered the curry with pork and loved it. It was thick, rich in flavor, and had the right amount of spice. It reminded me of mole (if you're Hispanic, ifykyk) I ordered the Cut Steak Don plate and it was excellent. My experience at the Red Rock Torrance location was underwhelming. The service wasn't friendly, nice, helpful, or fast. Most importantly, the food itself was very underwhelming. I don't know if I just didn't order the right item or what, but it wouldn't be somewhere I would take my family or recommend to a friend. I ordered the katsu with omu rice w/ garlic rice and demi glacé sauce. I don't know why but my food was very tepid in temperature even though my seat let me watch everything being cooked. The sauce was lukewarm and the garlic rice had a very artificial garlic flavor. Both the sauce and the rice left a horrible aftertaste even hours later. The katsu looked visually appealing but didn't taste good. The batter fell right off of the meat every time I tried to pick it up. So I kept ending up with a naked greasy flat meat that tasted very bland and unseasoned. The egg omelette part tasted very greasy, slimy, and rubbery. Just not my jam. I was also not given any cutlery and the server never came around to refill drinks, ask about the food or if I needed anything. I really sure could have made use of more napkins and a knife to cut my gigantic silvers of sad katsu. And order something to drink too because the water I got had no ice and it was straight up tap water. By the time I finally finished eating the plate of food, I felt exasperated and just wanted to get out asap. The seating I had by the kitchen was hot and the restaurant had no air conditioning or circulation. The server was not only slow but also very snarky. She asked me if I needed a to-go box for the piles of fallen batter from the katsu. The only time she sped up was when I asked for the check. Even then, she didn't come back around for good 5 minutes and didn't give me the chance to ask to pay by ApplePay. This just delayed my checkout experience further. In sum, I wouldn't revisit unless someone else insists we visit and I order a different dish or something. Given the price point and the poor quality of service and meal I had, I can't in good conscience recommend this place. read more

I wanted something different for lunch, so I decided to try Red Rock in Torrance. It's located in a shopping center anchored by Nijiya Market. It's easy to find, if you're looking for it. I went for the steak don (aka steak donburi). It's a popular dish which combines Western-style steak with Japanese culinary traditions. It features a sliced beef steak, served on a bed of rice and topped with a savory sauce. The restaurant itself is small and cozy. It was nice to see that lunch service was well attended by regulars. Service by staff was good. My meal was $25.99. A 16oz Sapporo draft was $6.00. With tax ($3.28), lunch was $35.27 before gratuity. The steak was of good quality and cooked per request. This is our go-to spot for my wife and me. We love the peaceful atmosphere--it's exactly the kind of vibe we enjoy. The food is fantastic every time we visit. We ordered the omu garlic rice with pork cutlet and demi-glace sauce, and the demi-glace was absolutely delicious. It's honestly the best demi-glace we've ever had. We also tried the American sliced beef don, which was excellent as well. It has a unique flavor that's different from other beef bowls, but in the best way. Very underrated spot! Not too much seating inside so you may have to wait around dinner time. Most people were ordering omurice We ordered: - omurice w/ katsu: pretty decent meal! Loved that the eggs were still fluffy and not overdone. - omurice w/ hamburg steak: hamburg steak was alright, probably wouldn't order this next time. - american sliced beef (not don, so no rice): very refreshing, not too heavy. Would recommend adding the raw egg, the marinade was also very nice. Overall I would recommend getting the demi-glace sauce and ketchup rice for the omurice as the garlic rice was a little overpowering.
