I had mixed feelings about this place after my first visit, but my 2nd time around and I'm 100% convinced the bad out ways the good. I was impressed with my first set of gel extensions, but extremely turned off by the lack of customer service in regards to their unclear pricing and their handling of "we don't accept credit cards for tip" and the hoops I had to go through to get my tip to the nail tech (a whole other long story). Nonetheless, I loved her work and decided to trek from NJ for a gel extenstion refill. I do appreciate that I had arrived at 12pm, to a locked door and this young lady was kind enough to see me after informing me it's their lunch hour. After that, I sat for almost 2.5 hours to end up with a set of unnatural nails that look like surfboards on my fingers. So upset. I literally paid $137 my first visit to end up shelling out another $85+tip (which this time, was offered to tip on my credit card *sigh*) for this result?! Isn't the priceyness supposed to support impeccable work? I second the other review that said if you want duck bills on your fingers, it's what you risk getting. Again, she was super kind, but I'm here for the reputation of your work, and I was super disaapointed that this was the result. Went here yesterday to Have acrylic nails soaked off and to get a gel manicure. I don't know if the person I was working with ever worked with acrylic nails. But instead of soaking them off, she removed them as if she was removing gel polish. She soaked a piece of cotton in acetone and then put the cotton on each nail and wrapped in foil. This made the process longer than needed. On the website it stated that acrylic removal was $30 and gel mani would be $50. That seemed pretty expensive, but based on the Instagram pictures. I thought it would be worth the money. I ended up spending $121 and left with bumpy nails. Not happy at all. I'm fine with spending money. But this was not worth at all. If you don't know how to remove acrylic. Why have it on your website. I will not be returning. read more

I walked by Fumic a few times and finally stopped in a Saturday afternoon a few weeks ago (out of boredom and to kill time). I was most interested in getting some type of three dimensional jewelry on my nails (again boredom). Don't ask why, because three weeks later, I am still unsure. Anyway, the receptionist recommended that I get a "get manicure" because the stones would last longer. Up until that point I had never gotten a gel manicure, primarily because I hadn't looked into the side effects, my manis tend to last as long as I use an Essie top coat and my nails grow relatively fast. Because I was dead set on getting some type of jewel on my nails, I acquiesced. I received a price list, and assumed based on the listed prices I would be paying around $80 for a mani/pedi. After spending 20-30 minutes scrolling through extensive Fumic's instagram page, I decided on a simple, yet jeweled design. I sat down to start my "gel manicure." It turned out that by "gel manicure", the receptionist meant a gel overlay, not a gel polish. I was not expecting this and had naively assumed otherwise (even as the manicurist applied multiple layers of the overlay) (i'm just **that** oblivious). Although my nails ended up on the thicker side (I think, or perhaps I'm not used to the artificial layer), I was very happy with the results. I think there is a good chance I will return for the same. I got an ombre design which is less obvious when it has grown out. So . .. the quality of my manicure was good. My pedicure on the other hand, not so great. Perhaps it was an issues of the space, but I don't anticipate returning for a pedi given the number of alternative options in the area and the overall price for services at Fumic. I will say that the top coat for my pedicure was very thick and very shiny, which I personally hate. Naturally, my estimate for the cost of my mani/pedi was off. I ended up paying $125, and an additional $20 for tip. In comparison to a few other patrons who got more elaborate styles, I imagine a lot of their customers pay rather steeply. Also, make an appointment. The salon is quite small (only 3 (or 4) stations for manicures and two for pedicures) and it seems like the manicurists are consistently booked. The waiting area is small and not very comfortable. The receptionist and manicurists are very nice and professional. Overall, great salon space (despite the size). I agree with a previous reviewer that the salon is very "shabby chic", bordering on kitschy. Overall, great nail salon providing a fairly unique, high quality (manicures, at least) service, just beware that the prices are quite high, especially for the area. read more

I really loved this place the first couple times I went for my gel manicure. I will say I love their hard gel product- it's the main thing that kept me coming back. And they do have a nail artist that seems to do very good work/designs (I've never personally gone to her tho). But over time I've been disappointed by their customer service (specifically FUMIC, the owner, which unfortunately is the worst part). If anything that part should only improve with their "regulars" that come in. I had been coming in on and off for over almost 2 years.... I work in the service industry so I always made a point to pay and tip 20% in cash, seeing as she's a small business owner. I know I'm particular with my nails. I think that that's ok especially when I'm paying $100 for a regular gel mani (no designs, at most I'll top the color with glitter). I think at that price point you're allowed to look for a certain level of quality. The last straw: Today I was put with one of the nail techs I've never had before. She was as sweet as can be and I liked her but she left my nails lumpy, very noticeably uneven, super thick and the edges were not fully painted (and I got WHITE nails.... everything is even more noticeable with white) so I decided to leave 13% instead of my regular 20% in cash. Fumic had the audacity to TELL me to leave more. Where do they do that at?! I've only ever left 20% every single other time. But this time I wasn't fully pleased with the results and I tipped accordingly. Instead of asking if everything was ok and making sure I was leaving satisfied she tried to tip shame. It was almost unbelievable. Super unprofessional and honestly I don't even care that I like their products (and I mean the actual gel products) or that it's 5 minutes from my house. I went in for an appointment on Wednesday, 05/11 for gel extensions with Fumi. The appointment process was fairly easy as we were in contact via text (feel free to give them a call). The salon is small but very cozy (2 pedicure stations and 3 manicure stations). They offer you water or tea with some cookies (sweet touch)! I've gotten gel extensions in the past at Sakura but I wanted to try a new place that was closer to me and in the neighborhood. The whole process takes about 1.5-2 hours. If you're looking to do intricate design work, be prepared to stay for about 2.5-3 hours as these nail artists take their time and it's much appreciated. Fumi was awesome! We made light conversation throughout the evening. There is nail art inspiration right on the walls for you to admire and form ideas with which is super helpful. I decided to go with a natural sheer pink gel color and had Fumi draw on a thin gold French on each nail and they turned out beautifully. Note that all gel products are made in Japan so it's quality stuff! The extensions itself looks amazing. Fumi was able to understand that I wanted my nails shaped into a rounded almond, (I cannot stand pointy nails). So how was the pricing? It was $100 for the extensions and $24 for the gold French design. It's pricey but standard for gel extensions. Compared to traditional acrylic tips where you have to get a fill every 2 weeks or so, you can get your gel extensions filled every 3-4 weeks (depending on how well you take care of them). So I waited exactly a week to see how I feel about the quality of the work overall and so far so good. They still look fresh and new (minus the minor nail growth but expected). First time with Chisa was great. I got gel with simple design on my middle fingers and was charged $56. Second time not so much. I was asked to come in earlier than my appointment and Stella did my nails. The fan she used when removing blew dust all in my face. They didn't have the jewelry I wanted so I went with a simple curved bar on my ring fingers, and she applied way to much glue. My ring nails are now bumpy with bubbles around the jewelry. That gel lasted a long time. I went back and got a design and it lasted for 3 and a half weeks! It hasn't even chipped at that point, it had just grown out a lot. Only downside is because the gel is so strong, when I got it taken off my nails were paper thin. And because they were so thin my regular manicure only lasted two days before it chipped. read more

I went in here hoping to get a relaxing mani/pedi. They charged $15 for gel removal which is unnecessarily high to begin with. Then my gel tips with the ombré glitter cost me $135. This is ridiculous to me. Nails are not an investment but should be a moderately priced luxury. They grow out in two weeks! We are in Harlem and again, nails should not be that high. After taxes it was $140. I wanted to do the peach ombré and was told it would be an additional $15 because it was "harder" it's gel mixed with glitter that they apply to the nail. It seemed anything you inquired about would be additional money. It was my first time so this turned me off. They didn't care about the experience or clients needs but solely on money. I wanted a pedicure but after much thought and being asked to decide because they need to let another client know I opted out. The pedi was going to be $50 which is not too bad but after the cost of the nails and the bad taste in my mouth for the experience I didn't think they deserved anymore of my money. I still considered coming back at a later time so I took a card. When I venmoed my tip to Stella, instead of thank you, she said "18% is the minimum of you liked the service." I told her the cost of the nails were expensive and any tip amount should be appreciated. How ungrateful and humiliating to say to your first time client. The nails are not worth it. I have gotten my nails done all over nyc, Florida and California and never encountered service like this. I was hoping to walk away feeling calm, relaxed and Beautiful. Instead I felt regret and upset. Treat people like people, not like dollar signs. Maybe I would have actually got the pedi and given more of a tip had I felt accommodated, respected and valued. I have been a customer to this establishment for over a year. I initially loved their service and product quality, their manis once lasted up to 3/4 weeks. This shop once had friendly and talented artists, close to a year ago this establishment has completely changed ALL their artists, product quality, and their regard for customers. The last times I've visited this shop I have been charged different prices (increasing each time) for the same service (solid one color gel mani). The owner does not go by her stated online price list and charges as she deems fitting. My last visit for one color gel mani costed over $100 on natural nails - two broke the following day. Before leaving this shop I was almost detained until given a tip which is demanded at a 18-20% rate. I had a cab waiting for me so left in a rush, the owner then thought it was acceptable to text me after leaving the shop to know my Venmo/ CashApp information in which she requested tip via the above portals. To anyone thinking of going to this establishment please be aware, you are not able to leave the tip amount you see fit, if your nails go beyond the nail bed they will tack on additional charges and won't explain or mention it until after the service is completed. Additionally their gel manicure may not last longer than a week or even a day. This establishment is no longer what it used to be! Luckily NY is filled with talented and friendly nail techs. Im writing this review now as I wont be going back. I live in Brooklyn and have made the trek to Harlem based on Miku's instagram. I'd also heard from a lady in a club that Im in that they do exceptional work (she goes to Miku as well). I first went a few months back to get a full gel extension set. I wanted to grow my nails out and thought this would be a good way to do it and have it look natural. It didnt. It looked clowning and after 2.5 hours I was too tired to stay there longer so I just filed them myself with a salon grade file the next day. I lived with them and my nails grew nicely so I went back. Two of them had broken though so I needed new extensions but didnt have time to go to Harlem so I just stopped in a shop near my home. *annoying* I went back and got Miku. She is AMAZING!!!! She was disappointed that I'd gone elsewhere b/c they dont use the same kind of gel. I apologize profusely and told her I wouldnt do it again. She did a fantastic job on my nails. A FANTASTIC job and shes nice and polite. My nails were shaped correctly and didnt look like duck bills and they were perfect. My nails lasted 5 weeks!!! 5 whole weeks! The next time I went back and got Fumi. She did a good job but my nails were super thin. So thin in fact that 3 of them cracked. Two of them popped right off and the other only the gel cracked. These only lasted two weeks. I was sad b/c I'd had such high hopes after my last mani. *sigh* So I go back and its late. I made an appointment but i have to sit and wait 30 minutes after I was scheduled to get taken. The lady that did my nails the FIRST time is the only one thats avaialble. Im annoyed b/c of the shoddy job she did the first time but its late and I have plans. So I tell her to just fix the broken ones. Somehow she misunderstands and starts a full gel mani. The process takes FOREVER so I know Im going to be late. Well she did an awful job as she did the firs time so I have to keep telling her where and what to fix. My nails came out uneven and some looked like duckbills again. Gel just isnt her thing. Two weeks later the gel started to lift. TWO WEEKS!!! UGH! Actually it was more like 9 days but either way its passed the one week that they will fix for free. ALL of my nails have started to lift btw. Not just one or two. I hold out for 2 more weeks b/c i dont have $80-$100 to keep dropping at this salon every two weeks and I call last night. I look online and see they are open for the entire day. I call and leave a message for an appointment (which I have done before). This morning after some time and no one has called back I call the shop. I ask if they got the message and she asks what time I want to come in. Ummm that didnt answer my question but whatever. I ask if they are free at 2pm while Im looking at the online availability. I would have said earlier but again I like in BK and I gotta trek there. There is some speaking in Japanese and then "no we are book today". I start to ask about the availability that I am looking at online or what happened to my message but I feel its futile. I hang up disappointed. I am not satisfied with the service to keep schlepping all the way to Harlem so we are no more. The shop is small and cute. They give you water or tea and cookies. Okay, so overall I thought the service was just okay for the price. I booked gel removal and a gel french tip. According to their services online, this should've came out roughly to $100 (or a little less). I was charged $145. I came to Fumic, because I used to get my nails done in Soho, but it was starting to get too expensive. My mistake was telling Fumi the location of where I used to go, because she obviously overcharged me. I didn't complain and still tipped well, but ultimately I would not go back because she was shady. I would actually still recommend this place to others because I think she did a decent job. They literally never do you wrong, are way more pampering (You get a private suite, refreshments, personal tv, more color/design selection), and have a referral AND repeat customer rewards. I would have never thought I'd be writing this review - but my experience with Fumic and her team took such a strange and unfortunate turn this week that I feel almost obligated to share it with any future OR existing customers. I've been a loyal customer with Fumic for almost a year - and I've come to the shop for many milestone occasions including my engagement photo shoot and various bridal events. I even planned to get my nails done here for my wedding in a few months. Unfortunately - this won't be the case because when I went to schedule an appointment on Monday (for my bachelorette weekend!) I received a cancelation and this text message from Fumic: "While we appreciate your business we feel that many times you don't seem to be satisfied with our service. Our nail techs see tips as an indication of how happy or satisfied a customer is with the work and since we aren't able to meet or exceed your expectations we invite you to find a salon better suited for your needs. We unfortunately do not have any nail techs that can accommodate you. Therefore we are canceling your appointment for tomorrow. Hope you understand." I was completely shocked and definitely did not understand. The first thing that I assumed was that they were confusing me with another customer because I have been going to the shop on almost a monthly basis for a year. Who would return on a monthly basis if they were unhappy with the service? Who would continue to pay their irregularly high prices if they were dissatisfied? Who would skip over the countless other nail shops in Harlem if their expectations weren't met? Not me - thats for sure. I then re-read the text and caught the implication that they might have an issue with my tipping - but a quick look at my venmo history showed a list of tips that I have given appropriately at 18-20% for my services. I shared a screen shot of the tip history with Fumic and her team still rudely turned me away with no acknowledgment or explanation. I decided to visit the shop in person to be absolutely sure that they knew who I was and how much I loved getting my nails done here. I still thought they must have been confusing me with a disgruntled customer. In person the claim was that I didn't tip at all during my last service. I knew that couldn't be because I had the record in venmo. It turns out that they had me in their appointment book for a time that I was on a trip out of the country - this must have been a computer error because I did not make the appointment myself. In any case - if I was not there of course I was not going to be able to tip. I would've never imagined that a scheduling technical error would black list me at the shop...or anywhere honestly. I've been waiting to hear back from Fumic since Monday morning to discuss the confusion and put the situation behind us but I still have not received a call. In fact, the team has hung up on me and forwarded me to voicemail multiple times when I've tried to reach out myself. All I've wanted to do is to amicably talk to Fumic so that I fully understand whats happened here and move on. It's terrible that these talented women could be so unprofessional and suddenly treat a long time paying (and tipping!) customer this way without any conversation. It's really no way to run a business. While they are extremely pricey, I've sent many friends to the salon and allowed them to share my image on social media. I've helped them explain to folks in Harlem passing by why the prices are high and applauded their service. I am sad to see them treat a customer this way and I hope that others do not have this experience. read more

The quality has gone WAAYYY downhill. They completely botched my appointment by forgetting, somehow, that I even made one, so I had to stand there awkwardly as they tried to figure out how that happened. I got a weak sorry as a result, and it was raining and frigid that day, so I was not only annoyed, but cold and I had traveled an hour just to get there. They squeezed me in the front, so I sat there, shivering, while they got to work. My technician barely paid me any mind, which was for the best, honestly, because I was pretty upset. The fact that they still did my nails and they had a pretty decent attitude about it is why they have 2 stars. Now, a few weeks later, the gel is cracking, I see there are pieces of fiber caught in the gel, and my nails, polish and gel look worn out. The sides of my nails are all raggedy and the gel is cracking in multiple areas. The shape is beautiful, though, but overall I'm incredibly disappointed in them. They used to be really top notch - what happened? I won't be going back, especially since they wouldn't even give me a discount, or more than a weak bob of the head in apology. Let me start with the good. I love the shop. The ladies that work here are pleasant, friendly, and welcoming. The shop has a great aura and vibe to it every time I come here. My only issue is that at first I found my Cal gel to last up to 4 weeks but now it's barely lasting 2 weeks. I got my nails done on June 16th and 11 days later, June 27th my nails look horrible. This was the reason that I stopped getting them done before because I started to notice that my nails were no longer lasting. I love this shop but there is no reason to pay $50 for my nails to last less than 2 weeks. read more
