Met with my Aunt in Syracuse and decided to meet here. My Aunt & I had the chicken parm waffles--spaghetti in the shape of a waffle topped with marinara sauce and fried chicken tenders and melted cheese. Sounds like an odd combination when you think of a waffle, but it's spaghetti!! It was delicious! The chicken was hot and seasoned nicely and the sauce was not heavy on the garlic. Hubby had the Monte Cristo waffle and made it disappear! Diner like setting where you order at the counter and pick up when your buzzer goes off. This is in downtown Syracuse by Clinton Square. We were there at lunch at 11:30 and stayed until 2:00 or so visiting, and there was a steady crowd, but not overly busy. Nice comfortable, fun vibe but very uninspired food. We were there for a private party with all food served buffet style and were surprised that eggs were served cold and waffles (in a waffle restaurant) were pre-made (not made to order) and quite ordinary. Could be that if ordering off the menu the food would have been different but seemed disappointing regardless. read more

When Guy Fieri tells you to try something, us mere mortals have no choice but to follow. Guided by the popular TV host's recommendation and a hungry party of college students, I got a chance to try out Funk n' Waffles for Sunday brunch. At first glance, I appreciated the laid-back yet retro aesthetic of the decor. The employees were able to pull together tables to support our massive party. I shared with two friends and we got the banana bread waffle, the Bacon, Brie, and Basil waffle, and the Iron, Lion, Zion (buckwheat waffle). We also ordered chicken tenders on the side, and various caffeinated drinks to fuel our day. Banana Bread Waffle: (10/10) This was HEAVENLY. Made with banana bread batter, I really felt like I was eating a dessert for breakfast. The waffle was sweet without being overpowering, and had a nice chewy texture that paired well with the crunchy walnuts and blueberries. This is a must get. Bacon, Brie, and Basil Waffle: (7/10) We were enthused about the salty-sweet possibilities but unfortunately were disappointed. Individually, the components--bacon, brie, apricot jam, waffle--tasted fine, but in this case, the sum wasn't greater than its parts. The apricot jam was saccharine sweet and the waffle was extraordinarily plain compared to its toppings. I wish the waffle were savory, with something like cheese to help bring the whole affair together. Iron, Lion, Zion: (4/10) If this is what healthy tastes like, I don't want to be healthy. Its appearance is deceptively divine, as the mound of fruit add a pop of color against what you think will taste like a chocolate waffle. News flash: buckwheat tastes like cardboard. The texture was gritty and the taste was bitter. I could not share my part of the waffle. Only would order this if you want to prank an unsuspecting friend who doesn't know that it's a buckwheat waffle. Chicken tenders: (12/10) The highlight of the meal! The tenders were SO crispy with a flavorful skin and a juicy interior. The sauce that it came with was spicy and sweet and I wish we got more to add to our waffles. Each piece was sizeable and was a great way to end our meal (and commence our food coma). Overall, I had a great time at Funk n' Waffles. There's a lot of exciting, quirky waffle options that compel visitors to come back. They also have live music at night, which I want to check out some time! If you're trying to fulfill New Year's Resolutions, I wouldn't come here for healthy options--but otherwise, indulge in your Guy-Fieri-waffle-fever dreams. read more

Restaurant- very small walk in area. Love the groovy vibes and the wall are available for purchase. I extremely pleased with the tv screen menu! There was a table that couldn't be seated cause of dirty dishes on it from the moment we walked in until we left so it was a bit off putting. A little over priced but for NY it's understandable. We ordered online and signed up for texts about order status but never received them so our order was cold. The young boy at the counter was more focused on his phone than taking a order. Don't think we will come back sadly Items - chicken and waffles with tender (DDD item)- not a huge fan- the chicken tenders where small. The house sauce was awesome! The waffle lacked flavor and waffle structure. Wouldn't recommend Smoked Guda waffle- was amazing - highly recommend - but it's pricey for one waffle. read more

Not really what I expected. You go up to a counter to order the waffles and then they call on you when your order is ready. Which isn't a problem but I was expecting a lot more from these waffles. If this is what Guy is impressed with i'm not sure if I need to try another place he visited. On another note, my friend actually enjoys this place. She always gets the brownie sundae waffle. It's a chocolate waffle with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. What is there to mess up? Well the waffle was dry and everything else did not taste homemade. We ended up at Funk 'n Waffles this morning while visiting Syracuse on the recommendation of a friend. We drove by at 8:40 and were a bit worried they weren't open, despite the Yelp page saying they opened at 9 as it was really dark inside. So we grabbed gas and when we got back at nine the doors were open and the line was already about five parties deep. It's a pretty quiet area at nine a.m. on a Sunday so street parking was no problem. There was another diner open a couple of doors down and several breweries and pubs right in the area so I imagine that parking may be a little tougher in the afternoons and evenings. This is a counter service restaurant, so you order at the register, they give you a pager and you find yourself a table. I would recommend looking over the menu and kind of deciding what you want ahead of time. I ended up getting overwhelmed and didn't even see some menu items that I would have preferred to try. But, that just gives us an excuse to get back to Syracuse! Lots of creative waffle choices from sweet to savory. I really need to try the Jive Turkey. Thanksgiving on a waffle? Yes, please! They also have espresso and a good selection of loose leaf teas. We ended up ordering a cappuccino and a Nutella latte, both were excellent. So, once you get your pager, you pick out a table. Their are two big rooms and tons to look at. The decor is great, I loved everything from the colors, the art, the old Jukeboxes and the use or organ pedals above the bar for decoration! All the tables have a bottle of syrup ready for you to smother your waffles with. They also had a big container if water at the end of the bar so you could help yourself! When your food and drinks are ready, your pager goes off and you head up to collect them. Alongg with the latte and cappuccino, I ordered a half All Shook Up and my husband got Crepe Expectations (Nutella and bananas). The All Shook is described as "Bacon Stuffed Buttermilk with bananas, honey and peanut butter. When I hear "bacon stuffed" I think lots of bacon. In this case, the bacon pieces are in the waffle batter. It was very good, no complaints, i had just imagined something different! With the waffles, the fruit is put on top of the waffles and the spreadable items (Nutella, peanut butter, etc) are on the side in small containers. No complaints here at all, service was super quick and friendly. I was quite impressed with how fast they were getting out all the orders. We also loved that it was counter service. We had a two hour drive home to Buffalo after so it was nice that we could either take our time or run out and not have to wait for a server! read more

We returned 4 years after the original review of their new location. Back to normal. Very impressed. What a difference a couple of years makes. It now has it's "vibe" back and doesn't feel like some modern hipster nonsense place like it did in 2018. Chicken and waffles were excellent. Coffee excellent. Brie and pear sandwich excellent. Wow- what a cool experience! My wife, son, and I ate here last week and would highly recommend it. Not only is the food excellent, but every aspect of our visit was what the kids these days would call "a whole vibe". We had no wait at all (late morning, the day before Thanksgiving) and were greeted by the owner himself who recommended menu items, made us some fresh coffee drinks (and a hot chocolate for our son) and chatted with us while our food was prepared. We sat in the stage side of the restaurant where we enjoyed music from the funky playlist and checked out the art around the space. After a great meal and chatting with the owner, we even bought some merch that displays their super cool logo on a variety of hats and t-shirts. We'll proudly represent Funk n Waffles at home in Texas and will definitely come back next time we're in Syracuse. read more

Picked up funk 'n waffles while in town recently as a unique Syracuse restaurant to try out. I wish I could give half-stars because 3 is a bit lower than I wanted to give, but not quite up to my 4 standard this time around. I think on another visit with a different order, though, it could be. We ordered a pickup order as restaurant seating was currently closed. I got the funk 'n chicken waffle which was waffle with chicken inside. I thought (mistakenly) that it would be a full waffle, folded in half like a gyro with chicken in the middle. As a result I was surprised when it came as JUST a half waffle and the chicken actually inside the filling of the waffle. This was just a misunderstanding on my part as a new customer. So, while a bit disappointed, not a huge deal. The bigger issue for me was that this item was ONLY sold as a half waffle - you could not get a full waffle portion. For me, this was an item sized for a kids meal and not nearly filling enough. With that being said, the waffle, chicken, and (OMG) the dipping sauce were all fantastic. The dipping sauce is a sweet-spicy mixture that is AMAZING! Once I discovered the tastiness of the sauce I was really wishing I had more waffle. I also got home fries which were good, though since it was takeout, the texture wasn't as great as I'd have liked. I won't judge by that, though, as I expect in-restaurant they're amazing. Others in our order got the waffle with Dinosaur BBQ pork (which was delicious!) and the waffle stuffed with mashed potatoes and bacon (also delicious!). We also tried some of their adult milkshakes (orange creamsicle was fantastic!). Overall, the food was good - I think I would just order differently next time knowing what I know now. The waffles were delicious, I was with friends so we got several flavors and everyone loved what they had, it's not fancy at all and They have champagne on tap for mimosas, but unfortunately the top was broken when we were there but it's definitely do not miss breakfast spot if you want something super low-key not fancy but with amazingly delicious waffles .... I had the pleasure of finding this local establishment for some much needed "brunch!" This place is sooo cool! Very trendy and the food is AWESOME as well. Staff are so friendly and willing to help with ordering from their extensive menu! I got the Chicken & Waffles (of course!) which is a buttermilk waffle with cage-free fried chicken! Sooo good!!! Chicken was perfection and waffle melted in your mouth with the syrup of course! It also comes in half and whole waffle sizes based on your appetite. This retro joint will always hold a very special place in my heart. My freshman year, every admissions guide and campus tour always proudly mentioned this place as one of the campus's hidden gems. It felt like a right of passage when I found the original location (this one is the 2nd) in a dirty alley lined with bars and cheap food. The stairs were hidden so it felt like a food speakeasy. Walk in and you're hit with dope funky neon designs and cool art lining the interior- the entrance had a "For Sale" basket of vintage records for sale. There were posters announcing lowkey musical artists set to perform in the place of waffles. It wasn't just students who frequented this place to study, but it was families visiting, out of towners who clearly only came for the hype and the clear standouts who were there for the culture that Funk N' Waffles exuded. Only small downfall is that patrons bring your own dishes to empty out and put on the trash cans- and it's also extremely busy so be prepared for a wait. 5 stars because this place played a part in my college experience- I've had sorority sister dates here, actual dates, hangover brunches (there's mimosas and a bar) and pow wows with my friends who became my family. I'm saddened that future generations of Syracuse students will not experience the original location on Marshall Street but I hope they choose to make the short drive to Armory Square to get a bite of Cuse culture. You will NOT be disappointed with any waffle you get. My favorite is the Jive Turkey- a warm sliver of dough oozing with Thanksgiving stuffing at every bite. Went here for lunch with 3 friends Food was excellent however the business side of things wasn't well organized; maybe they were short staffed, will definitely try again. Waited in line about 5 minutes, ordered at the register and was promoted to tip 15-20% however there is no table service; we were however able to skip the tipping portion. You are given a beeper and paged twice back the register; once to get your drinks (took about 5 minutes) and again later to come get you food (another 5-10 minutes) You are entitled to free refills on the soda however it would have held up the line for the cashier to go to the other side of the kitchen and prepare it so we rationed our drinks. The food was exceptional, especially the waffles of course. We haven't been to this "new" location as we only are able to stop when passing through town. Much more seating and still the same funky vibe, although we kinda miss the campus area basement. Upgrade for accessibility for sure. Still plenty of cool art and music. We ordered at the counter and got a pager while we waited. Cups of water filled and we got to hear the Friday night band warm up. The chicken parm was perfectly cooked and the pasta waffle was a nice addition. Jive turkey is still the savory standard with the dense levels of flavor blend seamlessly into Thanksgiving dinner in each forkful. Doesn't look like much when you walk past. There is heavy traffic from the homeless after scooting through you're in for a treat. Local art on the walls and welcoming vibe filled with soft music that dances in your ear. You can clearly tell this place is catered to the young 30 and under crowd whatever generation that is. Loved this little place! You can come here for great music, a good beer menu and great service from the bartender/manager, Sam. Then, the next day, you can drag your hung-over butt back in for a nice, substantial breakfast with a hefty side of Funk and Soul! I work overnights at a hospital and have to rely on a lot of takeout for dinner. This was the worst food I've ever received. I ordered several hours before closing at 9:18pm and the food got to me by 10pm so it should have been pretty hot and fresh. It was certainly not. The kale and spinach salad was 9.99 for about ten pieces of spinach and 5 pieces of kale. They also forgot the dressing and it was haphazardly just thrown into a container. The chicken tender sandwich was two tiny burnt chicken nugget size pieces. They were way overcooked and basically all just burnt breading. There were only about two drizzles of chipotle mayo on the two burnt nugs. There were 4 sad pieces of soggy spinach thrown on sloppily and even the tomato was mushy and not even a full slice. The packaging was all wrapped tight and delivered quickly and carefully so the blame for this food atrocity cannot be placed on the Uber driver. It was obvious that whoever prepared this just didn't give a @#¢K. I got food at their former Rochester location and that was also awful but I had heard the original Syracuse location was well liked. It was awful too and now I'm never coming back here. Glad they are no longer in Rochester. read more

Let's keep it Funky people, My review is limited as this review only pertains to the food/dinning experience. The food is really 3.5 out of 5 but yelp does not have a half a star feature. The waffles are between ok and good, nothing I had was overly great. I've tried them all over the years. However, I am now a yelper. I wouldn't get the Florentine again (pictured in my review). It's was just one of the options that was ok. What is good, is the jive turkey waffle. It does feel like a thanksgiving mashup of everything, if you're into that, which I am. What was very nice is one time they messed up the two half jive turkeys for our group as they made whole ones on accident and gave it to us for the half price. I feel the sweet waffles are a better option to go for when coming here. I also don't get the tip jar thing either. Especially since I'm picking up my food and returning the plates and silverware. I still do tip but not as willingly to keep it 100, which with this review, I'm keeping it Funky. What my review is not taking into consideration is the many events that are held here. Due to the amount of events and variety of type of events that could appeal to anyone, makes this venue ais one of the very few Gold Star places Syracuse. Planned a drive to Syracuse while visiting my son. He has been to this place before so we planned on having brunch here. Almost $13 parking with only an option for a flat fee of 15+hrs. After a long time the two Nutella lattes he ordered were made. He got two mediums when a medium and a large were ordered. But the food was no where to be found. I started to get anxious as food is the reason to be here. When he went to check on the order-keep in mind I see all these people that arrived after us getting their food- he is told that the mobile order did not print. But part of the food was on the drinks ticket. And it was all prepaid in their app. Anyway, it has been over 45mins and I'm still to eat. At this point I don't think I care much for the taste is it. Place is like a bar with breakfast; casual ambiance. Nonstop music. Trying to hit only local spots while in the area. Not sure I would ever come back if in the area. Disappointed. It's been an hour and our food still not done. It's waffles not rocket science. Guess what? We ended up getting a full refund after being asked if we wanted to wait. The place was already packed and I lost any interest in trying the food. I wanted to try out this place for its interesting sweet and savory waffles and cool, hip vibe. The restaurant definitely has a funky vibe, with groovy music and overpriced art on the walls. There is an adjoining stage area, near the counter that was curtained off, for live performances. We ordered the quarter banana Nutella waffle for around $5, which is a bit pricey for what we received. It was pretty standard fare and nothing that I couldn't whip up at home, but I was traveling and it was a convenient place to get some dessert after our lovely dinner a few doors down. I recommend getting the full size (higher savings when buying the full size) and sharing with several others to make the waffle worth the money. Decent food, great location.
