Despite the negative input I got about this place from a local, I had a superb experience here. I love how wonderful the place looks and the beach view is spectacular. I had the Shrimp and grits entree for breakfast, and it was delicious. My first time eating shrimp and grits, and I am very picky about grits! It is a little bit pricier than the restaurant that use to be here, yet I think the prices are fair. The service was excellent and friendly. I hope they add fried calamari and raw oysters to the menu. I don't remember them being on the menu at that time. A great place to bring visitors to Flagler Beach. After we asked for more sauce it was a lot better and had much more flavor. The food came out on the cooler side despite the plates themselves being warm. The service was not good at all. We were able to be seated right away around 8 on a Saturday which was good. We placed our order maybe 5 minutes after being seated. 30 minutes after that the waitress came back and said to my friend they were out of what she ordered and she had to pick something else. It took almost an hour to get our food. No one ever came over to let us know what was going on or to apologize for the wait. The Funky Pelican is a tourist trap w/a view! I've resided in Flagler since '88 and ate there way back when the Myers family owned this location and recently as well. Great view, but that doesn't make up for the smaller portions or over inflated prices! Came here for breakfast today and I'm so glad we did. The staff was amazing. Our waitress Stephanie was so nice. My husband had the pesto omelette and he was very pleased. I had the shrimp and grits and it was good. I think the mushrooms over powered it a little bit but the sauce was good and I liked the tomatoes. Every time I go the Funky Pelican I have a great experience. Tonight was no different. The views of the ocean were perfect. It was comfortable weather. The food was yummy and the drinks were ice cold. We had the fried calamari and wedge salad as appetizers and the fish and grits and chicken caesar salad wrap. Everything was really good. The portions were huge, so there was half the food left over. Such a waist. The only hiccup was that the apps and main course came out to close together. This place is great. I'm disappointed that I didn't get the opportunity to visit in the evenings to look out over the water! We stopped here for breakfast as it came highly recommended to us and we were not disappointed. The food was delicious and the VIEW is completely worth going for. We arrived early and were seated outside. The service was not impeccable, but we were accommodated when we requested to be moved to a different table due to the sun and heat. I know, why would you sit outside if you didn't want either of these things. We were prepared for heat but we were not prepared for zero ocean breeze. Due to this, sitting outside was near unbearable and there is a lack of umbrellas for the tables. So they were nice enough to move us to a table that had some shade. Food was amazing and arrived quickly. I was tempted by the Bloody Mary, which looked amazing and is apparently very good, but opted to stick with water due to the heat. Overall I had a good experience at the Funky Pelican. Drinks were a little on the expensive side even during happy hour. The view was great on the deck but a couple behind me was smoking the entire time I was trying to enjoy my meal. This is a huge negative for me and I'm sure for many, many others. They should enforce a no smoking rule on the deck. Service was decent. Our server was a nice girl but she must have been very busy because our table of 6 felt that we weren't getting enough of her attention. I got the impression that they were under-staffed. I ordered the jambalaya and it was very good! It was a huge portion with TONS of seafood, and a little spicy. Perfect and reasonably priced! We had Ahi Tuna Appetizer- the tuna tasted stale, most likely has been frozen before (perhaps the worst I've had ever). Dinner salad had no dressing and took 10 minutes to get waiter's attention only after chasing him down to get the salad dressing. Not worth your time and money.
