We also ordered the Caesar salad, chicken wings, and mozzarella sticks for my kids back at our summer home--they absolutely loved the takeout. The service was rapid, friendly, and exceptionally attentive; both the older lady at the bar and our younger waitress made us feel so welcome. It's a great atmosphere, too--they have a lovely patio in the back complete with a beach volleyball court, a ping pong table, and a dedicated party venue. I used to set up pins in the bowling alley when there were bowlers. My mother and grandmother knew Rohmans probably for about fifty years back then. Wonderful people to work for and with. Art Rohman must have been in his seventies at the time and a font of history. He provided us free lunch, although he did not serve food to the public then. The hotel had stopped functioning as a hotel by then. Mr. Rohman lived in one of the rooms as did one of his bartenders.His nephew Nick lived in the house left of the front of the hotel and worked as a bartender. Before I arrived, Mr. Rohman had had his own barber living in the hotel. When that was discontinued, he would drive across to Barryville to go to Trevor's barbershop (on River Road) who was also the Justice of the Peace. That and going to funerals were the only time he left the building. He never waited at Trevors. John Trevor used to ask the person whose hair was being cut to leave the chair so that Mr. Rohman could get his shave. Sometimes there were three or four people waiting for a haircut. Mr. Rohman always paid for the haircuts of those he cut in front of. I do remember the great baseball pitcher Smoky Joe Wood coming in periodically for a case of beer which I would carry out for him. There was also the mail car on the train which went around 4:00 every afternoon. A six pack (cost a dollar then) was run out to the mailcar every day. They never tipped. Sundays were a spectacle. PA. had Blue Laws which prohibited bars from being open on Sundays. Rohman's was exempt. The Catholic Church was a few hundred yards away. When service let out, most of the attendees walked down the street and into Rohman's. On that day Mr. Rohman was known as Father Rohman. I was told that Rohman's was open all through prohibition. Politicians then were no different than today, although it was probably cheaper to bribe them. The boarding house trade was going strong back in the 1950s. There were many in the area. Pre-lunch cocktails were a regular routine for the boarders. I used to bus tables and restock the bar (only fresh fruit in all the drinks). At around 11:30 AM the place would fill with boarders. I would guess that there were more than 100 patrons crowding the place. Then it would empty as they went back for lunch (12:30 I think). Kids were welcome. My parents used to take me there when I had to stand on a chair to play one of the two pinball machines. Rohman would often come over and throw a bunch of nickels onto the machine for us kids to use for additional games. Nighttimes were crazy. Whatever the capacity of the bar, you couldn't get another person or table into the barroom. There were five bartenders on at night and often the customers were five deep at the bar. Friday nights were the worst. Husbands used to come up from the city on the train after work and walk right across the tracks into Rohman's to join their wives. Busing tables was difficult because you couldn't navigate around the room. There were three doors across the front (railroad side). To get to the other end of the bar I would go out the nearest door, walk to the farthest door and re-enter there. Getting back with a tray full of glasses and ashtrays retraced the route. A great place! I am tempted to come up from NC to revisit the old times. The name I use is a pseudonym. I considered Art Rohman a friend despite our considerable age difference.

We have been here on three difference occasions. The place needs a deep cleaning. The place needs to be cleaned. Also, very rude and loud people come here during the night time and staff does not seem to mind patrons making others uncomfortable. If you are not a regular I would think twice before going there. read more

I stopped by on Saturday afternoon with one of my top-tier chums for a post-Port Jervis exploration/walk nip, deciding that out of all of the places we'd walked and/or driven by, this looked the most intriguing and certainly the most historic. One brief moment of validation occurred before we even entered - after walking through the downtown area and encountering pretty much a ghost town, we found a ton of locals in the outdoor patio/seating area here having a rollicking good time. Pretty decent endorsement, but it was quickly downhill from there. As soon as you walk in, you can tell that the majority of ye olde charm has been replaced; for instance, there's some wood paneling over the bar area that's relatively new - I was expecting something that looked pretty historic inside but in my opinion that wasn't the case. I'm not sure how much of a negative that necessarily is, but if you're walking into an establishment like this expecting to be transported to the 1890s, you're going to be disappointed. There's definitely some history, but it's not going to conjure up handlebar mustaches and victrolas. I ordered the Port Old-Fashioned off the cocktail menu; I was a little leery because it cited mulled oranges, but beyond that the description was dictionary definition. The drink itself was not. As you can see from the accompanying picture, the cocktail was practically red; I can't say for sure because I didn't witness the preparation, but it certainly looked and tasted as if it had Fireball in it rather than straight-up Bourbon. Really strange, and made it morph into a kegger drink for me. And the mulled oranges were definitely a mistake; I knew what I was getting into in that regard, so that part of the experience is certainly on me, but there's a reason this drink is supposed to have an orange peel essentially as a garnish and not a full-on part of the beverage. Really odd and I hate to say it, but probably the worst Old-Fashioned I've ever had. We had a young female bartender who was very nice/hospitable, which is the only reason this isn't a dumpster fire one-star review. She was the only one behind the bar, which was decently packed, and held her own. Our visit was relatively brief - we stopped for just the one drink before heading home across the border - but had no issues service-wise. We were able to order promptly, and received our beverages shortly thereafter. Unfortunately as mentioned, the actual drink was pretty bad, and I'd strongly recommend additional training in that capacity. Some of the intangibles are there, so I think this could be rectified. The Port Jervis residents clearly like this place a lot, so I have to assume they're staying away from the cocktail I had and enjoying either other drinks or the food (which neither of us sampled). And the price point is reasonable as well - I think my drink was $12 - but you ARE getting what you pay for. My recommendation? Head over to Jersey and drive the 29 minutes to the Walpack Inn, which is literally never on the way to anything except in this instance, and has much better menu options and legit rustic ambience.
