We had Skylight Jewelers recommended by a local Facebook group when we asked around about a local jeweler for an engagement ring, and we are thrilled with how everything went. My fiancé proposed without a long-term ring, since I wasn't sure exactly what style I wanted. We gathered a few pictures for inspiration and met with Spencer at Skylight Jewelers to create a custom design. We iterated a bit with him on the CAD model before finalizing everything and having it cast. We had Spencer purchase a lab diamond for the gemstone, and he helped us through the process on deciding between natural vs lab and the criteria for stone quality (which neither I nor my fiancé were familiar with). Everything turned out better than we could have hoped! My fiancé and I still think the ring is so pretty and is exactly what I wanted. Spencer and Eugene also worked with us on a couple follow up visits to resize the engagement ring so that it fit just right. As our wedding date got closer, we went back for wedding bands and the process was just as easy. We chose very plain band styles that Spencer cast in the correct size for both of us. When I was looking for the right jeweler in Boston to design an engagement ring, I found Skylight on Yelp. The reviews are what got me to walk in, and I'm so glad I did! My now fiancée and I went in and spoke with Spencer (the jeweler) and his colleague (a woman whose name we can't recall, but she was awesome!). We were looking for moissanite and from the moment we walked in, they were accommodating and honest. We purchased two rings, one totally custom and one edited from a design we liked in the case. Ultimately, our experience designing and buying both rings was flawless. Our rings are gorgeous, and we couldn't be happier. We'll be returning for our bands. I did a lot of research into jewelers, prices, methods, etc. before deciding that Skylight Jewelers was the best place to go to get a custom designed engagement ring. Spencer, who seems to be the owner/head person, worked with me one-on-one to design a ring. He was honest, helpful, and fair. He knew all about the current trends, what worked, what didn't. He was able to take my rough ideas and make them all work together to design an amazing ring. When it was all done, the price was extremely reasonable--even lower than I expected. What stuck out to me about working with Spencer and other staff about Skylight Jewelers is that they take so much pride in the actual art of jewelry making. If I had an idea that they did not think would look great, they would tell me honestly, even if it would lower the cost of the ring. Spencer was excited to actually make the ring and work on it. If you are going to propose, you'll need a ring. If you need a ring, get a custom ring. Hopefully you won't need to buy too many engagement rings in your life, so when you do buy one, get one which is unique and unlike everybody else's. Get one the fits you and your significant other's tastes exactly. Two other quick things: Skylight can work with any sort of stone. We decided to do moissanite instead of diamond. I was looking to create a unique ring for our commitment ceremony. I had several small diamonds from other pieces that I wanted to use, and I had an initial concept. Over a period of several months, I worked with Spencer to create my perfect ring. We communicated in person, on the phone and via email to get something started in wax and then I went down there again to see the wax. That started another process of sitting with Spencer while we worked with the wax to get it just the way I wanted. We changed the design, which diamonds we were using, and the size, several times over several hours and visits. I knew just what symbolism I wanted the ring to convey. I don't know how he did not get inpatient with me. He was very calm and tried every tiny, perfectionist suggestion I made. His approach is that if I was not 100& happy with my ring, he was not letting it out of the store! I was way more anxious than he was and he seemed to have no worries about how much time it took to get it right. He even told me that if the end product was not the ring I envisioned, then he would start all over again!! While I definitely did not want that to happen, it did give me peace of mind. So, finally, we decided to go ahead and Spencer gave the wax to his setter/finisher Eugene, with the caveat that certain small adjustments could be made when the ring was ready. I went to pick it up yesterday and I loved it! My "eye" saw 2 things I was not happy about and felt I wanted tweaked. Eugene came downstairs and spent time with me making sure he totally understood what I wanted. After about 15 minutes, Eugene came back with my ring and it was PERFECT! Eugene, had heard and understood exactly the tweaks I wanted and did them. He is a true "gem" to work with! As far as pricing goes, Spencer is extremely fair and charges based on the design and amount of metal and work needed, not the amount of time it took to design the piece. He also took a bunch of old gold I had at home as a trade-in, taking a substantial amount off the price of the ring. If you want a custom designed ring, Spencer and Skylight Jewelry is the place to go. One piece of advice - Spencer is a true artist. He does not keep regular hours and "dropping by" could mean he won't be there. Be very specific and patient about timing and when you want to work with him and how much time you have for each session. Don't be scared off by that - it is well worth the process! AND, if you are not as crazy as I am about exactly what you want, trust Spencer, and the process will be a lot quicker! read more

A few months later my boyfriend proposed with a custom engagement ring from Skylight Jewelers. I was in Boston for a few days and my hotel was just around the corner from Skylight Jewelers so I walked past it several times a day and really liked some art glass in the window. I finally went in... Spencer was super nice and seemed knowledgeable of the art glass industry (which I know very well). Great conversation, he even knew the designer of my 21 yr old wedding ring- and polished it to its original glory for free, nice selection of items. I bought the two glass pieces and had them shipped to me in Portland, Oregon. I was a little nervous as they are quite fragile, but they arrived very well packed and in perfect shape. This jewelry shop has everything I'm looking for: family-owned; local; personal and personable service; and a unique selection of jewelry. The owner creates many of the pieces in his shop. I also love that he uses gems you normally wouldn't see in a "typical" (in other words, boring) jewelry shop. His moonstone necklaces and rings are keeping me saving, penny by penny, for the day I can walk in and buy one. I always stop by or at least slow down when I pass by this shop. My wife and I had our wedding rings made here, and we could not be happier. My ring is platinum with a patterned rose gold inlay that was very complex to forge. The metallurgy of putting gold inlay on a ring is not straightforward and the pattern is quite specific in its composition--also, I wanted it off-center. Spencer was able to achieve all of these things, and the result is magnificent. My wife's wedding band had a different set of challenges. Her engagement ring is a vintage ring (~90-100 years old) with intricately detailed engraving all around, and her hands are delicate. In addition to his own depth of skill, his workshop and extended network are also deeply talented--he was able to find an engraver who could properly, and beautifully, replicate the vintage engraving from the engagement ring for the wedding band. They match perfectly. In addition to the pure skill of his craftsmanship, Spencer has an incredible sense of artistic aesthetics. He intuitively understands what types of shapes best complement what types of hands and fingers. And he really listened to us throughout the process. I am still amazed that he was able to create these rings that embody so much in terms of personal stylistic preferences. He was able to craft a wedding band for my wife that did justice to her slender delicate hands, and he was able to forge a ring that makes my pudgy, padded Vienna Sausage fingers somehow look graceful. Lastly, the prices he charged were no more than at any other place we looked at but, in our opinion, the quality of the craftsmanship and the level of service he offered us was unparalleled. People like Spencer are part of an ever-diminishing class of true craftsmen. The opportunity to have our rings made by him is something I will always appreciate. read more

I brought in an old, damaged ring (it had belonged to my girlfriend's grandmother) with lots of intricate detailing all over. I asked Spencer to fix the original and then create a replica of it. He did an amazing, amazing job. My girlfriend (now fiance!) couldn't believe the accuracy with which he'd created the replica ring: one of the only ways to tell them apart is the very shallow setting the older ring had.
