Absolutely wonderful experience with Dr. Gabel. I am a lady with a masculine hairline, and Dr. Gabel created a hairline that makes me feel like a woman. For so long I've been avoiding going to gyms or being in hot tubs with friends, afraid of windy days because I've been hiding my hairline since highschool. I finally had enough and scheduled an appointment. He is booked out a little ways because he is truly incredible at what he does. I've been on a hair restoration forum for years and any mention of Dr. Gabel is met with "He's the best on the west side of the country" and "Oh he was trained by (can't remember the name)!" who is apparently a pioneer or something for hair restoration. Just had an FUE procedure done by Dr.Gabel. I truly can't be more grateful for the experience I had. I truly have never met a doctor that cares so much about what they do. I am absolutely delighted with my hair transplantation, and I can't speak highly enough about Dr. Steve Gabel. Skilled, professional, personably, courteous and caring. He also has a great team of friendly assistants. I feel very lucky that he practices right in my local area so that I didn't have to travel for his services (but travel to him would have certainly been worth it). In my case (I was 62 at the time of the FUT surgery), I really only wanted two things: a) to "re-frame" my face for a better head-on look b) keep the final look "age-appropriate" (with some lateral receding hairline) Since my goal was something modest but fitting, I didn't even care about a bald-spot in the rear (though he did put a scattering of folliclar units in that general area). The process of recovery was exactly as he described. The results (from about 2150 follicular units) were mostly "in" within 6 months, and it turned out perfect! I had put all this off for maybe 10 years, but decided to do something just for ME as I entered semi-retirement. Except for a relatively brief period of post-surgical baldness (maybe 2 months later, when transplanted hairs fall out) nobody I knew really noticed that it had been done! Specifically, the result was gradual and subtle... though the before-and-after photos are really rather dramatic! Dr. Gabel and his team are amazing. The doctor is not just a hair restoration expert. He is an artist. I mention that because I researched a great deal before choosing Dr. Gabel. There are cheaper hair restoration options, including ones with fancy computerized gadgets. But getting a natural and satisfactory result in hair restoration requires artistry, and Dr. Gabel delivers. No hair restoration process is inexpensive. If one is going to spend the money to undergo the process, I would suggest that a penny saved is a hundred times a pound foolish. read more

I am a female with male-pattern baldness... I spent a day at the Gabel Center a year ago getting a hair transplant. Everyone was very kind, and Dr. Gabel and the whole staff were such PERFECTIONISTS. Not only was my hair filled in, but every hair (from the back of my head to the front balding area) was placed so that it would grow in a natural direction. I just had surgery last week, so it is far too early for before and after pictures. Although I am confident that the results will be great, this posting is simply information on my procedure and the process. First, I am transgender. This posed no issue for Dr. Gabel or the staff, and everybody was very kind. In fact, they were interested in learning more about the transitioning process so that they could make future clients as comfortable as possible. The process started by having a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Gabel about 6 weeks before the surgery (he was booked out about 6 weeks). The consultation was comfortable and comprehensive with no embarrassment. The office manager provided a written estimate which is based on the number of grafts that are anticipated to be implanted, and as she has 8+ years of experience with Dr. Gabel she was more than capable of answering questions related to the financial side. We then scheduled a surgery date and I made a security deposit to hold the date. On the day of surgery, I arrived at 6:30am to find several people busy preparing for the day. We spent about 2 hours signing paperwork (e.g., informed consent), finalizing the hairline design, taking photographs and taking medication (e.g., valium). Surgery began around 8:30am and vitals are monitored throughout the day to ensure safety. My job was simple -- don't move! This sounds easy, but when you are in a chair for 10 or so hours it is difficult to not adjust your position, cough, scratch an itch... If it is necessary to move, you need to give Dr. Gabel and his team a heads up so that they can stop working before you adjust. The donor site was harvested quickly and efficiently -- I would guess that this was done by about 9:30am. The entire team immediately started processing the donor tissue and turning it into 1-, 2- and 3-hair follicles suitable for implantation. Once a few samples were available, Dr. Gabel performed a few test incisions to check the size of the incision vs. my specific hair follicles, and after making a few minor adjustments to his instruments he was happy that the incision size was appropriate. For the next hour or so, Dr. Gabel proceeded to make tiny incisions over the entire graft area making sure that (1) he had high density and (2) that the alignment was appropriate so that the hair has a natural orientation. Nothing difficult or painful, but it was very odd listening to all the tiny incisions being made. While Dr. Gabel is busy making the incisions, the team is busy preparing the grafts. I was surprised to see that it took 7 people working constantly under a microscope for about 8 hours each to prepare all the grafts. After the incisions were made, the implantations begin. I have heard that many transplant surgeons delegate the implantations to their assistants, but Dr. Gabel was involved from the beginning to the end. He placed grafts during the entire process and performed quality control by monitoring the graft quality being produced by each team member. To be clear, Dr. Gabel's is key assistants also help place the grafts (one of whom has been doing this for almost 15 years!), but this is necessary when so many grafts are needed. We took a quick 30 minute lunch break around 12:30 where the staff provided a very nice meal from a local restaurant (you order this during the paperwork phase). The food was good and there were plenty of options to support pretty much any dietary restrictions. It takes a long time to implant more than 3,000 grafts, so it was a long day in the chair. That being said, the staff was not only efficient but also downright pleasant. We talked about anything and everything which made the day go by much faster than it could have. Plus they have decent music from Pandora or you can listen to your own CDs, etc. I was so impressed with the entire staff that I am going to bring in lunch for them in the near future. First time I've ever "tipped" a medical group! So, hopefully this provides some useful information for people considering Dr. Gabel. I realize that the proof is in the pudding (or in this case in the hair line), but I will say that in my experience you tend to get good results when the team actually enjoys their jobs and cares about the results. read more

I found Dr. Gabel online and decided to do a Skype consultation with him. I was looking for somebody new since I hadn't been pleased with my previous two hair transplant surgeries. 14 years ago I got a transplant from a place called Medical Hair Restoration and the second one in '09 by a very popular surgeon in the industry, who I'd rather not name. Dr. Gabel spent over an hour on Skype with me answering all my questions, with no pressure that he was in a rush to get off the call with me, or that I even needed to use him as my surgeon. He knew that I had 2 previous surgeries and that this was a big deal for me. He also knew I had specific needs and concerns on how I wanted the hair grafts transplanted. Plus, I live in NY and he is in Portland so he understood it would be a big investment for me to travel and lodge away from home for several days to come see him. He even mentioned to me that he could recommend me to somebody closer that does really good transplants, but after taking with him for an hour I knew he was the guy! He was friendly, cool, up front, honest and candid with me. The day of surgery, I first got to his office at 6:30am. I went over some things with one of his staff members, and instantly felt comfortable in the environment - It was a relief. Shortly afterward, Dr. Gabel came into the office, spending more time going over the game plan, reassuring me that all my needs would be met, concerns addressed, and re-affirming that the main goal was to make sure I was 100% happy and comfortable with everything. This was a priceless feeling! And to top it all off he had a smile and upbeat attitude the entire time, haha!! Now that's a man who is passionate about his craft! In my previous procedure, the surgeon didn't put any grafts in himself and solely relied on his staff to do the placement. Not Dr. Gabel! He was involved and hands-on from start to finish. I was his only patient and he placed the majority of my grafts, giving me his undivided attention. He and his staff stayed extra late (past 7pm) making sure everything was PERFECT. In fact, he went the extra mile for me the entire time I was there. After surgery he personally offered me ride back to my hotel, stopping so I can grab dinner. He even suggested that we stop at the grocery store so I could stock up on food for the hotel! On the Saturday following my surgery I met with his staff for a follow-up & clean-up, and then again on Sunday before I went home. They are super thorough! After Sunday's follow up Dr. Gabel drove me all the way to the airport, helping to limit my transportation expenses. I can honestly say that he's a cool and genuine person; someone you can relate to, and with. And I can't say enough about his staff!! His staff is super experienced, collectively having over 3 decades experience in the hair transplant industry. They made me feel extremely comfortable the entire time and took superb care of me. They were consummately professional, but also really cool and down to earth. They put me at ease and made me comfortable with music and conversation throughout the entire surgery. I can actually say I had fun getting the transplant done! My short term results so far look incredible. I look like I got double the amount of grafts I did versus the past two surgeries combined. This was going to be my third hair transplant surgery so I knew from past experiences exactly what I was looking for in a surgeon/office. Dr. Gabel had it all. I did a lot of research before choosing Dr. Gabel and I found that, most importantly, he uses the latest in hair transplant techniques and technology. That was important to me because of my previous experiences. The most current practices increase the graft success rate and decrease the healing time. Next, his staff got good reviews online which was confirmed on my first visit. Having a major surgery to improve your appearance is stressful. Dr. Gabel's staff is unparalleled when it comes to making you feel comfortable and at ease. Probably the best medical office I have ever visited. Finally, the surgery was fast, comfortable (for a surgery) and successful. I am writing this review 6 months after my surgery and I could not be more pleased with the outcome. Dr. Gabel is fantastic. Originally, when I came in to see him, I was interested in only surgical options to fix my hairline because I was convinced that was the only option. However, he convinced me that I should try non-surgical options first even though that would not make him any money. Within a few months, the non-surgical options showed a huge improvement in my hairline and have given me a major confidence boost. Such awesome ethical behavior is exactly what I look for in a medical professional. If I could give 6 stars, I would. I've had multiple procedures now with Dr. Gabel and have always been super impressed with everything and my whole experience of being a patient of his. From his ability, his staff, his bed side manner, and his care for his patients it shows in his work. His work has always been the best which is obviously the most important, but (as a physician myself) I've been very impressed with the amount of time he spends with me and his thoroughness to go over all my surgical and non-surgical options. Dr Gabel is not only an incredible doctor but a caring, honest person. I have had four previous hair surgeries by other doctors over a 20 year period. For this surgery I researched all the top hair restoration doctors and location was not a limiting factor. I had a consultation with Dr Gabel in his Seattle office and he listened to my history, what I wanted to achieve and honestly told me what approach should be taken based on my previous surgeries for the best result. The day of surgery Dr Gabel met with my wife and I for an hour to discuss the strategy. My wife was impressed that he wanted her to be comfortable with the procedure and address any concerns (my wife is a hair stylist of 25 years). During the procedure the staff were so attentive and we joked around , I almost forgot I was in surgery. Also I was included in every aspect of the procedure. For instance I was shown all the grafts in the dishes once the extraction was finished. I would like to add Dr Gabel placed every graft and was meticulous in placement. After all the grafts were placed Dr Gabel and the staff took great care in cleaning the areas and making everything as clean as possible for fast healing. The next day we went back to the office so Dr Gabel could check the area to make sure everything was in order. Dr Gabel spent quite awhile with us to go over post-op procedures and stressed if I had any questions or concerns to call him anytime. This is by far the best experience I have had with a hair replacement surgery and I know the result will be wonderful. 2 days post OP with Dr. Gabel for 1800 FUE grafts, and I am truly amazed by the quality of care he and his team has provided. I had a prior transplant with a doctor in the Seattle area with dissatisfactory results and my experience this week with Dr. Gabel blows that putz out of the water, now I see why Dr. Gabel is world class. For 1800 grafts FUE, Gabel and his team took their time working meticulously. And when I say team he had at least 5 other assistants working with him on my frontal hairline--from extraction, to evaluating each extracted graft, incisions, to implanting the grafts and cleaning--his team is a well oiled machine. THIS is the experience one should expect when pursuing a permanent operation such as a hair transplant. I came in at 6:30 am to review our hairline design with Dr. Gabel. He and his team finished with me by evening. This is compared to my first transplant in Seattle where I came in at 7:00am and I had supposedly more grafts transplanted but was let out by 3 pm? His team is very nice and dare I say made the whole operation FUN even. Lastly I want to say I have a heck of a lot of less swelling and bleeding so far post operation with Dr. Gabel (a testament to his continued superior post operation aftercare) versus the immense amount of swelling/bleeding/crusting I had during my first transplant(which provided much less aftercare), which is a big plus. I'm sure there is a lot more I can say for how enjoyable and impressed I am with Dr. Gabel's work but I will update more as the months go by. We'll let the pictures do the talking. I had the best possible experience with Dr. Gabel and his staff and my results look absolutely amazing! Dr. Gabel and his staff completely exceeded my expectations and went above and beyond for me. At the consultation I felt very welcome. He answered all my questions for a good hour at least. He was honest, friendly, and passionate about what he does. His pricing was very fair and I knew he cared most about giving me the best results. When he drew the hairline i was so happy with it and he knew how to make it look natural. On my surgery day his entire staff was so friendly, I just got along with them so easily. It made the surgery day enjoyable just talking and listening to music, it was fun. I experienced almost no pain. I was given vicodin, I was given anesthesia throughout whenever I needed it so I was numb and hardly felt anything, and valium to relax me. Even when the strip was taken it was relatively painless, and when Dr. Gabel did it I didn't even know until it had been sutured and he told me. He tricked me by saying that he wasn't doing it yet so I wouldn't stress. He and his staff have a good sense of humor and enjoy what they do. He and Lulu stitched it with care and I'm sure my scar will be invisible with my hair. At all times for the whole day the team of Amanda, Bridget, Lulu, Katie, and Matt were working under microscopes creating my grafts. When making the holes where they placed the grafts Dr. Gabel, with Aileen and Karina, were so skilled in making holes in the right directions for the grafts and placing them for a natural hairline. We broke for lunch, they had asked what I wanted from a menu earlier, and my pad thai with chicken was so delicious. Also on breaks they gave me coke and gatorade to drink and granola bars for snacks. When they began placing grafts Dr. Gabel was in the middle, with Aileen on my left, and Karina on my right. They said the grafts were going in smoothly. Anytime I felt the poking I told Dr. Gabel and he gave me anesthesia he wanted me numb and wanted it to be always painless. Dr. Gabel was in the room working on me almost the entire day which really is exceptional and exceeds the norm. Aileen and Karina were very skilled and experienced in placing grafts as well. I felt confident in their expertise and in the whole team, who also made my grafts a little longer so that they looked so good. The operating room was incredibly clean and sterilized, and the whole office was kept very clean. The hair from my strip was dense, and they were able to place the grafts so densely. I could feel how closely they were placing grafts, and they worked quickly but with care. The whole time they wanted to make sure I was ok. The hardest part for me was staying still for so long and not fidgeting. They helped me adjust about every 10 minutes, the back of my head would get uncomfortable so they'd move the neck pillow. They also gave me a pillow under my legs and a blanket so I was cozy cause the room was kept cool. It was a long day because I got so many grafts and they were so dedicated to giving me a great result. They were all just as excited as me when they were getting towards the end and seeing how it looked, or maybe even more excited which made me feel really good. They placed grafts into all the little spots when it was already densely covered to fill everything in. Dr. Gabel shaved little areas just where my hair was thinning to fill them in so the density would be better. I was able to keep my hair long everywhere else. When I got to look in the mirror I was amazed, it looked so good! They really went above and beyond. I felt so lucky. My hairline looked so natural and just right for my face and the grafts were so dense. The next day I came in and Aileen washed my hair thoroughly and sprayed the grafts with saline. Dr. Gabel was still excited. At home I have been spraying the grafts and taking the antibiotics, steroids for swelling, and vicodin they gave me. Just a few days after I feel so good about the results. I went in again earlier today and Karina washed my hair and it already feels healthy and clean. Dr. Gabel was still excited. He really cares and so does his staff. I'll be being extra careful with my grafts and I have everything I need at home for healing. I followed their pre-operation instructions and I will be taking care to follow their post-operation instructions exactly. In a week I will go back in to have the sutures taken out. I will continue to go in to take photos documenting my results. I feel so lucky that I went to Dr. Gabel and his staff and they can't wait to see how I'll look, and neither can I. read more

This review is meant to address and challenge the remark left by T M. on 10/22/2014. When I emailed Dr. Gabel for the first time, he personally replied to me the same day (very helpful email addressing all 13 of my questions). When I scheduled a consultation, he met with me in person and performed a very thorough analyzation of my hair loss and gave me very professional counsel. And, most importantly, when I emailed him with follow-up questions, he himself called me to address my questions over the phone. Whats more impressive is I actually missed his call, called him back 2 hours later, and he answered after one ring! He addressed all of my follow-up questions cordially and honestly. My first hair transplant procedure (NOT performed by Dr. Gabel, rather a physician in CA) was a failure. I spent a lot of time and money for horrible results. So in desperation to find a surgeon to help remedy the atrocity that is the failed hair transplant by which I am currently plagued, I have spent months researching the top 20 surgeons in the country along with all existing methods for hair extraction, transplantation, etc. Because this review is already quite lengthy, I will not go into detail about all the work I went through to find the top 20 in the nation and why I am particularly impressed with Dr. Gabel. But this much is certain, I could not have asked for better or more professional communication from Dr. Gabel...this is why I find T M.'s review very hard to believe. It is likely I will go to Dr. Gabel to remedy the last hair transplant terribly executed by the physician in CA.
