We have been coming to Puerto Vallarta for the past five years and always promised to visit Gaby's. So glad we finally made it here. Let me start by saying that Gaby's absolutely lives up to the hype. From the moment we sat down, the welcome was warm and charming. I started with the tortilla soup; it was beautifully presented and packed with deep, rich flavor. You can tell it's made with care, not rushed. For my entrée, I went with the Mexican sampler plate; it's your best bet if you want a little tour of the menu. You get a bit of everything; chicken mole, a stuffed pepper, enchilada, tamale, plus rice and beans. Every single component was well-executed, and the portions are no joke; this is easily a dish two people could share without feeling deprived. And the margaritas? I don't say this lightly; they were the best I've had in Puerto Vallarta so far (I had a cucumber jalapeño margarita and my second one was a passionfruit margarita in case you wanted to try the ones I did) Perfectly balanced, not overly sweet, and clearly made with quality ingredients. We were staying right down the street and this place had great reviews so we decided to give it a try. We were sat right away and placed a drink order. They brought some homemade chips that had been sitting in the corner and were pretty stale. After about 20 minutes we finally were able to put an order in. I ordered the chile relleno and my son and husband shared the fish tacos as well as the table side Caesar salad. Our food then took almost another hour to come out. We were STARVING. Watching the Caesar salad was pretty cool and it tasted amazing. Even my two picky kids ate some and loved it. The fish tacos were super fishy which was a bummer because being where we were at they should be pretty fresh. And then my chile relleno was just a chile filled with meat. No cheese and not battered. It wasn't bad, but when I looked at other people's around us and went back to yelp to see if I misunderstood how it would be served mine looked nothing like anyone else's. So that was a bummer as Chile Rellenos are one of my favorite dishes. We waited almost another hour after we were done eating to get our check. We did the cooking class and liked it but agree with other reviewers there are some details to work out. The good first - the food is fresh and amazing and it was very fun to cook a whole bunch of recipes as a group together. Gaby's is a beautiful restaurant with deep history and a lovely view of PV - it was very fun to be part of that event. Chef Julio and his team are also obviously very competent, customer service oriented, and charismatic - they were very enjoyable. Some work that could be done - the class went over by 1.5 hours, which was frustrating as it didn't really need to. The class was scheduled from 9-2, already long, and then the opening lecture went from 9-10 and the market tour from 10-1, leaving the cooking part rushed and not really about learning cooking techniques. The market tour was fun and it was good to learn how to select vegetables, but since the advertisements said to prepare for a 20 minute walk, I also worry about people's mobility. The time could have been halved and it would be more enjoyable with more time to learn to cook. It's obvious a lot of heart goes into these tours - and with some slight adjustments they could truly be great! read more

Incredible food experience. We walked to the market to pick up all the food we needed, then came back to the restaurant to cook in this one rooftop professional kitchen. I felt like a real chef! My teenage son and I took the 5-hr cooking class. It started with the history of Gaby's and cooking basics (the pillars) and her son, Julio, the chef, took us to the market to show us how to pick the best fruits, vegetables, and fish. Then the cooking was on like donkey kong! We made sooooo much stuff, I wish I could go back for another meal to try everything. People for sure here are nice. They are efficient and kind. All the dishes are very colorful and flavorful. I liked all of them. They don't just taste the same under the whole Latin umbrella. They all hold their own flavors, I can taste the history of the dish and people's thoughts. I can also taste how important lime is in this culture. The place is cute and locals also come here. My brother and I were visiting PV for the long weekend and wanted to sign up for a traditional cooking class. With a quick Yelp search, we stumbled upon Gaby's cooking class with Chef Julio. They had a 12% discount coupon on online booking. We used whatsapp to get the discount from the restaurant owner and were able to book. The chef was gracious enough to accommodate our vegetarian dietary restriction. The class started at 9am. We were a group of about 8-9 people. The group was very diverse. First off, the chef shared some history about Mexico and the food. Next, he made a list of all the dishes that we would be making on the day. He also incorporated any changes we wanted while drafting out the menu. He provided a shopping bag and from there we left for the local market. On the way, we visited several local vendors and procured our ingredients from tortillas, vegetables, fish and nopales. The chef introduced us to the traditional mexican drinks and shared a lot of insights about the culture overall! After gathering all the ingredients, we took Gaby's shuttle back to the restaurant. The team has already setup everything for us on the restaurant rooftop. They took care of rinsing the vegetables thoroughly. We all collaborated and made several salsa variations, chips infused with chili oil, rice, guacamole, tortillas and chili relleno. It was a lot of yummy food. We also tried the traditional mango margaritas. The chef also introduced us to moonshine and tequila. Both tasted strong and great. Overall, it was a fulfilling experience and it was packed with fun. I highly recommend trying this activity out. It's a great idea to learn more about Mexico culture and food. read more

Those 2 dishes plus 3 drinks was $32. Very reasonable. We emailed ahead because we had a large group of 20 people. They were very quick to reply and help us out. My lovely lady is a big TikTok gal, and she mentioned the spat between Gaby's and the neighbors, which went viral, so away we went to try it out. First things first, I absolutely love this part of town. We walked through the cobbled roads, and up the rickety stairs, and we found a wonderful and inviting man at the bottom of the steps to the restaurant. It was a gorgeous day, with temps in the mid 90's, and a slight sea breeze tickling our exposed skin on occasion. Truly perfect conditions to eat Mexican food. We were seated immediately, and the place was all but empty on this lovely afternoon. Our waiter, Cesar, was such a character. With the magic tricks, gift of gab, and a wonderful laugh, he took exceptional care of us. I suspect that may have been on account of my sexy and beautiful date, but that's just my observation. Food: Caesar salad (served table side) Wow, this was truly impressive and the foodie in me was geeking out. Hard! Our waiter came over and began to make the dressing from scratch and watching his every movement was just a wonderful start to our dinner. The rich, deep, garlicky, umami, funkiness of a traditional Caesar dressing is such a wonderful treat. The lettuce was crisp and fresh, dressed to absolute perfection. Each bite was funkier and more delicious and just had me wanting more and more. Chicken Mole I've only had mole in the US, and this was not like any of the dishes I've tried. It had so many different flavors and aromas. I was able to taste the depth of flavors with each bite. The chicken just tasted so much different and was cooked to perfection. My lovely lady was enticed by our waiter to have an after-dinner drink. Not just any drink though. This was the Cesar specialty of Courvoisier and Gran Marnier. She is such a trooper because she's a wine, champagne, and beer drinker and here she was sipping on Cognac. We had such a wonderful dining experience, and it just felt like a place we could hang out and dine all the time. The Gaby's filet with mornay sauce was absolutely delicious. However, they forgot the tortillas for the fajitas (even after we asked for them). I have walked by this place so many times and finally got a chance to try it. The place is incredible. The food is so fresh and probably for good reason. The chef Julio shops every morning at the Mercado. Since it was quite warm outside, we ate inside which was fine. The server was attentive and friendly. I highly recommend the Cinco de Mayo plate which will allow you to try a little bit of everything and taste all the amazing flavors. Phenomenal cooking class! I was doing a lot of research on cooking classes in PV and it seemed like everything was at least $100 USD/person in an okay looking kitchen with no tour to local market. Here, you get a beautiful outdoor rooftop kitchen with views of the cathedral and ocean. You also get to grab the ingredients at a local market and learn about the food and history. Lastly, we prepared such tasty meals and really enjoyed the instruction of our chef Julio. Amazing way to spend the day! Just had a wonderful dinner with great service. I had not been here for a while, but am determined to support this place more after new jerk ex-pat neighbors sued this restaurant that has been here over 3 decades to stop their beautiful music. I had 2 Cadillac margaritas, the Gabys salad w tequila dressing, and the tequila shrimp (tequila 3 ways, lol!) All were wonderful, and the service and view were terrific. I can't wait to come back. This is a review about Gaby's cooking class, not the restaurant itself. I would've given it a better score if I hadn't taken another class two days earlier. The other class got everyone involved in talking to each other, where is this one was more about the instructor. He is a local television chef, and we did learn quite a few new things, but he did talk more about himself than the food. We all did a lot of chopping and made up so much food. We could've fed 40 people. It was fun that we made up several different sauces and beans, but I wouldn't say any restaurant recipes for my favorite. I've never had pineapple salsa before, and that is something I will make it home. The moly was good, but the fella is were lackluster by the time we ate them they were cold. I think the classroom been a lot better if we would've made you were things and less of it. I learned the most at the market, as he explained about male and female, bell peppers and onions. Overall it was fun, but not fun as the other class I took. I did enjoy the people, but once he realized I need how to cut and chop I did a lot of it, but I do cook a lot! Spectacular atmosphere in a backstreet off of a Malco. Beautiful Outdoor Terrace and third floor. Covered porch. Uniquely seasoned and delicious salsa which was very flavorful, but not too piquant. The steak fajitas did not disappoint and the combo plate called Cinco de Mayo had tasty, tamale, good enchilada and salsa Verde, and a remarkably distinct mole chicken which was not spicy and almost sweet. Cooking classes can be taken three days a week. Restaurant service was friendly, attentive and food was so good. I had to try Mama Conchitas chicken soup-a winner. The chili relliano was scrumptious. The salsa was also very bland. The big burrito is indeed big. Stuffed with bland grilled fajita vegetables. Meh. Tortilla soup also unremarkable but worth finishing. My wife, daughter and I visited Puerto Vallarta and stopped by Gaby's For an early dinner. The mixed reviews of recent made it a bit sketchy as to what we would experience. I'm so glad we went! The food and service were amazingly good! We were the only diners, but like I said we arrived before the evening dinner hours. We had chips and house salsa and purchased fresh guacamole too! Excellent! My daughter had fish (3 pc) tacos, while my wife had (3 pc) chicken (breast) enchiladas, and I had (3 pc) shrimp enchiladas in verde sauce. The food was delicious! The wait staff: very efficient and kind. We came here just before 1pm (their opening time) and they seated us right away on the patio that had a view of the Malecón My wife and I both ordered the Cinco de Mayo. This dish included Chicken Molé (the Molé sauces was to die for!) Poblano with cheese, a tamalé and an enchilada. Everything was delicious. For drinks, my wife had the Passion Fruit Margarita and I hade the Mexican Flag Tequila shot. It was 3 shot glasses, starting with a red salty-sweet juice in the first glass, a double shot of silver tequila in the second and lime juice in the third. It was fun to sip the red, the white and the green in a row. After our entrees we split the best flan I've ever had! I highly recommend this place if you're looking for great food at a great price with a great experience and friendly service. read more
