I used this service for two years. In that time they had a new technician wash a part that was not supposed to get washed, shutting down my whole system. I contracted with GAC Services to replace my heating and air conditioning system. Of the 3 estimates I obtained, they were the lowest by over $1000. After signing the contract, they sent a Quality Assurance technician to review the work, take measurement and review the entire project with me. On the day of the installation the crew (6 techs) showed up right on time (8 AM) and after reviewing the project, got right to work (part of the crew inside and the rest outside). They laid down protective coverings on all the floors and proceeded with demolition with minimal mess. By 3 PM they were finished with project, just as they said they would. All the parts fit correctly and they even repaired part of the existing ductwork, that had gaps in it without additional charge (a rarity in today's world!). Even re-routed the humidifier ducting to make it more efficient. The installation crew was very friendly, knowledgeable and professional. They answered any questions I had about the equipment or installation. All debris and material was cleaned up and remove. I am a mechanical engineer with 30 years experience in the utility field, so I know a quality when I see one. I believe you will be happy with any of GAC services, should you decide to use them. read more

I purchased a yearly service contract for both my heating and cooling systems for approximately $300. I recently had the cooling checked and the technician said that everything looked "fantastic" and no repairs were needed. He was at the house for a total of 20 minutes. Two weeks later, the AC went out and I went through my home warranty company for repairs (since GAC no longer works with home warranty companies!). They said that the Freon was low and the capacitor was blown. The new company said that the technician from GAC should have noticed the level of the Freon two weeks ago. I sincerely feel like GAC was waiting for the system to run out of Freon and was banking on that I would call them. I feel like I was robbed. My family has been using this company since the 1990's, but I will never call them again. read more

We had GAC come out again when we had an issue with our heat randomly turning off. It turns out it was a loose wire. We're generally do-it-yourselfers, so we really appreciated that the technician took the time to explain/show what he was doing for the fix. We have used Gaithersburg Air Conditioning and Heating (now called GAC) for well over a decade plus. For the most part, it has been annual routine HVAC maintenance (i.e. - annual Aprilaire filter replacements, etc), along with the occasional miscellaneous service issues (i.e. - broken zone thermostat, etc). Anyway, it's bedtime last Friday night and at around 11:00pm it was C O L D outside...and surprisingly cold upstairs. Checked the upstairs thermostat. Air was coming out of the ducts...but it was cold air. Not a crises...with 3 zones and space heaters in storage, everyone had a warm night. Before retiring, I did call GAC around midnight and left a 'service request' message. I think that is wasn't even 7:00am the next morning and GAC service called. Gary from GAC was at the house by 10:30am ( running a little late for his 10:00am scheduled arrival time....but we were accordingly called and duly advised by the GAC offices of his expected delay). Gary from GAC arrived and identified the problem as: ' inoperative/broken 'hot surface furnace ignitor.' We were advised of the cost of the replacement part and install cost and Gary had our home heating system 'running normally' in about 30 minutes. With the proliferation of Internet ' consumer comment' posting boards (such as YELP), I feel that - in order to 'make these boards work and to be of value to everyone' - it is the 'consumers' responsibility' to participate. SO HERE GOES: Our household has regularly utilized the services of GAC for approaching 2 decades for both routine and specific HVAC related repair issues. The company is founded on a well-managed operating platform. GAC telephone personnel are courteous and professional in their demeanor. GAC in-home service technicians portray competence and experience, while maintaining a congenial air at all times. A homeowner feels comfortable when GAC service technicians are in your home." I have never done a 'cost comparison' of residential HVAC service firms. However, GAC has always been completely transparent with us and ALWAYS makes full advance disclosure of costs. The service from this company exceeded my expectations. From the very first phone call to the final completion of service I had nothing but excellent service. They were quick to respond to my needs and completed complete installation of a new HVAC system quickly and efficiently. Mike Mott gave several options when he came out to do he estimate and was totally honest when asked questions about using some existing equipment to save money. (ie, using existing thermostat). They provided information of rebates and took the charge of the service visit off my bill since I went with them for the replacement unit. Paul, the lead on installation was great in taking me through a walk through of the system after the installation. They showed up on time and could not have been more pleasant to work with. We have used GACH since 2008 and have a service contract with them. In 2009 when servicing our furnace, the technician found all four fuses had blown out and replaced them. The same happened in 2010. So in 2011 I thought of being present when the servicing was done - only two fuses were burnt out. For some reason the technician said he'd check them again and it turned out that only one had blown out! The technician said he'd see if there was a non-inventory fuse in the truck (which there was) so I wouldn't have to pay for it as they were expensive - two fuses for $43. This year only one fuse had burnt out and the technician replaced it and sent me a bill for $43!! The fuse cost $12.50 at Home Depot. I know there is a overhead charge when you get it from a technician. But to say one was for $43 when earlier it was two for $43. More importantly, is it possible for fuses to burn out? I had a horrible experience with this company. They sent a technician out to do a routine maintenance chec on my A/C unit (biannual check). I was pleased with the service; even signed a one-year contract. The next morning, I realized I had no hot water. I called the company and indicated that I wasn't sure if it was due to them or not but that I thought it was very coincidental, given my gas heat pump was within inches of the A/C unit that had been serviced. I left my cell number with the company representative and she told me she'd have their service manager call me back. Late that afternoon, the company representative indicated that the service manager had left me a message and not heard back from me but that they would not be able to send out a technician to correct the problem because it was not their fault; it was just a coincidence. I came home from work and the service manager had called my home number, not my cell number as requested; he left no message (I just looked at my caller ID). The next day, I called back the company and indicated that I was not happy with their decision; that I felt the company had indeed caused the problem. The company representative apologized profusely and told me she'd have someeone come out to relit my pilot light on the water heater. I thanked her. Two minutes later, the service manager called back and said they absolutely would not send anyone out. When I began to tell him that I was so dissatisfied, he said they would send someone out to relit the pilot at no charge and that the company rep would call me back to schedule the visit. The company rep called me back, told me she would schedule the visit but that I would have to pay for it. At that point, I told her that was absolutely not what the service manager just told me. Long story short, when the service manager called me back, I told him I was so disgusted by the lack of communication and unprofessionalism of his company that I wanted out of my yearlong contract (which he agreed to). Not all companies are perfect....I totally get that....but how this company handled my minor problem (what happens when it's a bigger problem?) made me realize I did not want to do business with them. I would not recommend this company AT ALL. p.s. I had a friend come over that day and he agreed that the technician must have accidentally brushed against the dial on the water heater and that shut down the pilot light. Just to update - the GAC manager did call and was very nice, and said if I ended up not needing a thermostat they would waive the diagnostic fee. I explained that the fee was not the issue (note my review above did not complain about fee per se - and I did pay for it, but was annoyed that I had been forced into choosing between full replacement or nothing), and it didn't matter if the thermostat ended up being the problem, the issue was he was not willing to work with me, and was trying to minimize his time while maximizing the cost. Anyway, I ended up using another vendor, who charged less. We found the LAT sensor in the box (I am noting this because I was suspicious about it being missing, so I wanted to clarify it. I will note that I asked the GAC repair guy to check the empty box to see if the LAT sensor was there, and he said he had checked and it wasn't. I checked on my own when the other vendor came, and asked if the wire that I found was the LAT sensor -- it was, so that also saved me an additional couple hundred.) In short, I will give another star because GAC called me to try to work things out, but I still won't go back to them. They charged more than the other vendor, but were ruder and unwilling to work with me, going straight for the most expensive option. I explicitly was looking for someone who would be a longterm heat/ac maintenance company for me, as I knew we would be needing a new heater in a few years, a new humidifier, and other repairs. Maybe because GAC is a bigger company, their technicians don't feel the same interest in developing a longterm relationship. New update: I will say this, we did end up changing the thermostat. I am trying to be fair so I am adding this information. So the technician was right, but I still did not like his communication with me. And to be fair to GAC, according to GAC, they feel they are worth the extra cost, over the smaller vendors. I did end up using another vendor, Cold Comfort. The owner is a smaller shop and really works with me, with lower prices and personal attention, and so now I have sent him a number of projects, large and small. read more

We have had many issues with your company I am sad to say. When we had our furnace installed we were told we couldn't have a humidifier, next time someone came out he told us we could have a humidifier installed. He drew up detailed plans for the installation. When the technicians came out to install, they installed it incorrectly and sideways. It wasn't until another technician came out to service it that it was noticed to be installed wrong and leaking on our floor. We had several conversations with Randy about this issue and my father, who has been a long time customer of yours and referred us in the first place, even spoke with the owner about our issue. I was assured it would be fixed immediately. The original technician came out and I stayed home most of the day for his visit. I had been told it would be fixed, but he came out only to look at it again after your employees had already seen it 4 times. We had to make, yet another appt and my husband had to take a day off of work to be home for the technician to finally fix the problem. I had spoke to Randy and he assured us we would be the first appt and he would follow up after it was installed to make sure everything was right. He also told me we would be compensated in some way for your error, all the hassle and for my husband having to take a day off of work. No one called, no one followed up and we were never compensated for all the trouble we were caused by your inability to do the job the first time. The first communication I have received was a renewal bill for $295!! I am shocked at the poor service, communication and work we have received from your company. It absolutely shocks me that you would send us a renewal notice when you should be servicing it for free after all that has happened. I would expect more from this company seeing your website and the "awards" you have won. I hope that you take the time and effort to make this right, but I do not have high hopes at this point. read more

I just called to schedule my bi-annual service, thinking I was doing this at a good time, nice and early. I was expecting an appointment in a couple week, the scheduler immediately said we are scheduling the end October and then said the first available was on Nov. 1st, 4+ weeks. She then went on to say I should schedule my winter cleaning when I have my summer service don, not sure about anyone else, but have a hard time scheduling something months in advance. I have the contract, which probably will not be renewed, otherwise I would have called someone else. I'm not sure the annual plan is worth while, the costs seems high compared to competitors and I agree with others that they want to sale replacements units with no other justification than it is over 10 years old. Additionally, the last maintenance visit, they did not set the flows right and I had to change them to a summer configuration. I will say that their techs are very nice and professional, I'm sure they are pushed to up sale units and additional add on devices/services. read more

This fall I made the decision to upgrade/replace my electric heating pump. As part of a routine maintenance contract GAC had been servicing my old electric heat pump for several years, and I had been very pleased with that service. Their personnel appear knowledgeable, professional, prompt and courteous. I like that the company and is NOT one of the big box stores. When it comes to an 'appliance' this important, I prefer to work with a smaller, local company that can provide personalized service. They quoted me a fair price on a unit that is top of the line. They came when they said they would, facilitated my getting the appropriate rebates, provided enough personnel to get the job done in a relatively short period of time (half a day if that), and promptly responded when I had a small problem with the system after installation. I'm very happy with GAC and will continue to use them for my heating/cooling needs. read more

Our heating system conked out in January 2016 and while we were able to heat our house with a kerosene heater that was obviously not a permanent solution. Our HVAC system was 35 years old and just couldn't be repaired. We got 5 estimates based on Yelp reviews and 4 were pretty close to each other. But, one stood out -- GAC. They had great service and the best price (we compared apples to apples on a couple of bids and GAC came out on top by a substantial amount - about $800). Fritz (their salesman) took the time to walk us through the job and even suggested solutions to the uneven heating we had been experiencing for 35 years among the three levels of our house. Because the work couldn't start for 4 days, he even sent out a tech to try to get our old system working temporarily at no charge. Their techs were professional, helpful and cleaned up after themselves. They patiently explained how to maintain the equipment and how to operate the wi fi thermostat. We couldn't be happier with our choice. read more

GAC installed three systems for me now in my current and past home and we have never been dissatisfied. While they will not rip you off (so many other HVAC companies really try) but they are also not the cheapest. When you experience the service and work with them you will understand why they are worth every penny of the few extra bucks. Prior to installing a system they send someone out to spec everything, take measurements, ensure whatever needs to be fabricated with ducting is done before they get there on install day and then on install day it's a swat team that gets the old out and the new in. In less than 4 hours they had an old 5 ton AC and heat system completely removed and a new Bryant one in + they train you on how to use the new system. Same experience the install before that with a heat pump in an attic. They will take all old equipment and leave absolutely zero mess (and the guys are clean and work clean as well). Installs come with a year free service calls (have not needed any) and annual checkup. These guys know their job, listen to what you have to say, and get it done right the first time. read more

In January of 2014, our HVAC system was acting up and not heating properly. On a particularly cold night, we lost heat altogether. In a panic, we called the emergency phone numbers of several HVAC contractors and GAC was the first to respond the following morning. They sent out a representative who came into our house and when he walked in, we explained the problem we're having. As he walked down the steps to get to our HVAC system, he said it's usually less expensive to replace the system instead of repairing it because GAC has great financing options. Then, within 15 minutes of walking in our front door, the technician did a visual inspection of the system and told us the heat exchanger was cracked, shut off our system and condemned it, and said we needed to buy a new system. He charged us $89 for the diagnosis and said one of his salesmen will call us to set an appointment and go over pricing options. So, he condemned our system within 15 minutes of inspecting it and then shut it off becuase he said it was "dangerous" and a "liability" for him to keep it on becasue of concern of CO emissions. He left us without heat altogether and said we should buy some space heaters from Home Depot until the system is repaired. By this time, it was 64 degrees in the house and we have a 4 year old child and my wife was 36 weeks pregnant. We still had a hard time agreeing with his diagnosis and didn't think it made because our HVAC system was only about 8 years old. So, we called another reputable company who sent out technicians 2 hours later to confirm whether or not we actually had a cracked heat exchanger, etc and do a review/diagnosis of our system. We needed secondary confirmation before going through $5K-$7K expense of replacing our 8 year old system. The 2nd company took their time, two technicians spent 4 hours examining our system and running it, taking it apart to check the heat exchanger, etc. They put a camera up in the system and showed us there was NO crack in the heat exchanger. They used digital monitors to measure CO levels, etc to confirm that our system was not just in good working order, but it was running efficiently! I repeat, it was running efficiently! They put all of their findings in wiriting because they were taking on the responsibility of turning our system back on after GAC had slapped a "condemned" sticker on it when they shut it down. After this detailed diagnosis, the culprit was found to be a dirty sensor that was causing the issues and once they cleaned the sensor, they turned on the system and monitored it while it cycled several times. Afterwards, we called GAC and told them to cancel having a salesman contact us with a quote to replace the system. We told them that we had another company come out and properly diagnose our system and they had fixed it and turned it back on for us. GAC cancelled the sales call but more revealing to us was that GAC NEVER called us back to confirm that we had the system repaired properly nor did they offer to send out another techinician to verify whether or not the system was in fact safe to keep and operate or whether the system needed replacement (as their technician claimed when he shut it down and condemned it). One would think they would at least call us to follow up since they shut down and condemned the system out of safety concerns...So, here we are in late July, six months later, and our system is still working flawlessly. The $500 we spent on careful diagnosis by an honest, competent company made all the difference. With 2 kids, every penny counts for us and I'm glad we didn't shell out $5-$7K on a new system from GAC. I know Gaithersburg Air has good reviews which is why we called them. But, our experience with them was awful and it could have been awfully costly. It's clear to us that they are more of an HVAC sales company rather than a maintenance and repair company. We will never use them again. Do yourself a favor, DO NOT call this company and shop around if you want proper diagnosis, maintenance and repair of your system. read more

I chose to use GAC based on their reviews on yelp and I was not disappointed. I called for a problem with my air conditioning unit and they were able to send someone out that afternoon. I like their pricing model - flat rate no matter how long it takes. We had a particularly unusual problem that took a lot of time and was not what he expected. He was happy to admit that his initial impression was wrong, eager to roll up his sleeves and get working on it even though it would get him home late, and was creative in finding ways to make the job less expensive for us, eg, signing us up for the maintenance plan, on which the savings on the various parts of the job came out less expensive than the cost of the plan. He explained all of the options patiently, gave specific advice when we asked, but didn't push us in any particular direction. The communication between the office and the field technician in both directions was smooth and quick. read more
