This place is a boon to New Paltz. I had a great experience tonight. Craved chowder and calamari. The soup was good but the calamari exceeded expectations. Chowder was 3 out of five stars. It had the requisite consistency and was very reasonable $ wise- but could have a bit more attention to it? Not as many bits of clams as hoped for, perhaps a bump of rustic flavor from herbs, garlic or ? IMHO. The calamari however was fantastic. Tender and fried just right. I love tentacles and these were generous and big! I was very pleasantly surprised. ((UPDATE: I'm still thinking of it a few days later and am probably going to return tonight!)) I do really like fresh market side of this business, since the prices were fair and had great variety of fresh seafood even better then Adam's in respects. Like soft shell blue crab which is hard to find. Now as for eating here, I found the service pretty abysmal and it's really a to go place more than anything else. The Thai popcorn shrimp was great, since it was light on sauce and very light breading, so I had more shrimp than the usual overcooked fried with micro salad shrimp. For the lobster roll, they perfectly toasted and buttered the roll, plenty of lobster and very fine celery bits, only thing I would loved it had more mayo since the lobster salad was pretty dry. I was craving fish 'n chips, and I have a route to bypass the traffic madness in New Paltz around lunchtime, so I thought, how about Gadaleto's? I have had fish 'n chips at a lot of places in Ulster County, and invariably, the fish is a rectangular hunk of something, breaded and flash frozen at some bulk food supplier. Not so with Gadaleto's. A fresh piece of fish, in a light batter, deep fried to flaky goodness. A pleasant surprise after so many disappointments. The fries, well, not so much. Could have come from Burger King or somesuch, but the star of the platter was the fish. Smallish, very clean dining room with (my guess) 15 seats at 4 tops and 2 tops. Condiments, including malt vinegar, salt and pepper, in one serving packets on a counter with napkins and plasticware. Lunch, including a 20 ounce bottle of Pepsie was under $18. Not a fancy lunch, but satisfying to have found the best fish 'n chips I have had in 30 years. read more

Definitely the place to go to for fresh fish in the New Paltz area. We've stopped in frequently, and the staff are always helpful and friendly. Everything is indeed FRESH, so say no more. Usually just buying the fish or shell fish items, but recently tried their crab salad with a spicy sriracha-type dressing - fabulous! I have been a big fan for over 20 years, but the last few experiences with the restaurant have let me down, especially the last, which will be my last. Yes, it was busy, but the person taking the orders was harried and unorganized. The phone was ringing for takeout while the in-person orders for sit-down were robust. My friend and I put in our order while the restaurant filled with others after. They brought her the correct order to our table but gave me someone else's. When noting their mistake, they said 'Oh yours is coming' when they took it to the correct table. Then multiple people who came after me got their orders before mine, some were also getting the wrong orders. I had to go to the counter twice to remind them I was still waiting while my friend finished her dinner (btw her fish was cold and small)...that's how long it was taking. When mine finally came, there was no apology, they just put it on the table and walked away. I did say to my friend that it would have been nice to get an apology. They heard me, swung around and in a very terse tone said, "We are very busy tonight..." and walked off. My crabcake was mushy, the scallops and shrimp were small and few. I asked for my take-out box AND my side of cole slaw which was never brought to the table with my meal but I just didn't feel like going back to that counter again. When I walked out, I vowed that this would be my last try. The fresh fish o the other side is great but way too expensive. The market across the street offers great quality seafood at half the price. So I guess I'm saying so long to my once-favorite local seafood place. I refuse to pay good money for sloppy, substandard and downright rude. read more

We have been a customer since over 20 years and love the food from the store and the restaurant. Recently though, we have been disappointed. Last week, we got the packaged coleslaw and it tasted horrible. What happened to your home made slaw? Tonight we got the shrimp basket which is usually our favorite. The shrimp were fresh like always but the breading had absolutely no taste. Same with the fries, drenched in oil and no taste at all. Did someone forget to spice the food? Have eaten here a few times in the past, and it was usually ok. Was here recently and ordered fried calamari for take out with lobster bisque soup. The calamari was a really skimpy portion, and very soggy. The lobster bisque was horrible. There was no flavor, not a single spec of lobster, and the worst part was that it had chunks of flour throughout even after heating it up (as in the pic). Ended up throwing it away, and it's not exactly cheap. The soup was bought at the store, and the calamari from the restaurant. Very disappointing won't be back anytime soon. read more

Amazing seafood. No frills restaurant. They serve wine and beer. We started with a cup of clam chowder which was amazing, creamy and decadent. I got the fish and chips which were so fresh and a large portion with great tarter sauce. My mom got the seafood of the day shrimp, blackened which she said was very good. The fish , is always uneven, the staff is quick, and disrespectful, on requesting an orders. Usually young and inexperienced. The other day my wife ordered 3/4 of a pound of cod, the kid pulled out 1 lb. asking for a smaller piece, the kid cut off several small pieces, and moved them to the scale. Being frustrated with the experience, my wife just accepted the chopped up fish. I often have unpleasant experiences there as well. There is always a turnaround in staffing. We found this place here on yelp while scouring for some descent seafood in the Hudson Valley. I can't give it five stars cause that means perfection and they are not perfect. A fish market with a restaurant next to it can't be. Now, I have always gone around the same time. 8PM and always on a Friday, I have now visited the place 4 times in the past 4 months and the consistency has been amazing. The New England Clam chowder is excellent. The clams are always fresh, the calamari, I have seen people mess it up is crispy with a fine marinara. Now the food. My wife has had the lobster bake at every meal, she is in love with it. I have tried a few of the dishes here and there. The fried I am not a fan off, I'm used to the fried fish having some sort of seasoning and they seem not to use any. But everything else has been excellent. The broiled fish is my favorite, while the blackened takes 2nd. I have personally not had the lobster bake cause I just steal some of my wives. The decor is also not aligned with the price. The price is nice seafood price and the decor does not match. I took the star because of the decor and lack of seasoning on the fried fish. Plus perfection is hard to win. Me and my wife will continue to be regular patrons until further notice. Mind you we have to drive almost 30 minutes from Poughkeepsie to get there, and its WORTH IT... read more
