Overall, my favorites were the Siu-Mai, green curry, and the roti. Those are the three dishes that are a must try! Every dish had its own flavor and paired well with one another. You could mix and match items and it all tasted cohesive. Service was okay, nothing over the top. It was very minimal and basic as you'd expect so nothing crazy there. Interior and exterior of the restaurant is very vibrant. Everyone seemed to be enjoying their time there. Overall, I'd give this place a 8/10. Food tasted great, but nothing I would necessarily crave for me to come back. I haven't been to this place since my 2019 visit, when I left with a disappointed review. My friend had booked a table for six of us, and I returned last Friday. We had a six-person table, but two of my friends couldn't make it. So, it was just four of us, all girls. I arrived first and ordered a cocktail ($16-Disco Boll). It was a barely half a glass with full ice. I was surprised by how small an amount that is and how it tasted like just juice. Later, my friends arrived. One of them ordered the same cocktail, and it came out as a full cup! I'm not joking! It was a FULL cup and tasted much stronger alcohol. We could tell that different people made the cocktail, but come on, you need quality control! We decided to order five different dishes, as the server had recommended six to seven for four people. We were wondering why he was pushing it so hard, since each dish was expensive. After the food arrived, we realized why he kept suggesting more. The portions were tiny! I honestly never understand food like curry, which needs rice, and they don't provide it. They charge extra for rice. Their 'English Pea Curry' ($28) didn't come with rice. We asked the server, and he suggested 'Roti Canai' ($16) instead of 'rice' ($6). Are you kidding me? A bowl of rice is $6? The 'Roti Canai' came with 'one roti' and some tomato sauce. We were still hungry and ended up ordering two more bowls of rice. The 'Chicken Satay' ($16) came with three skewers that tasted good. The 'Bakwan Sayur' ($16) was a strange dish. It was a bunch of very thin veggie strings fried together. It wasn't what we expected. The 'Scallop Crudo' ($26) was good, and we all liked it. Overall, the food tasted good, and the service was fast and friendly. The restaurant was cute. However, the portion sizes were ridiculous for the price! It's not a fine dining experience, and we paid $178.12 for four ladies. They included 20% gratuity, which we understood since we had booked a table for six people. However, since we were only four, it would have been better if they had informed us that they would still charge us 20% of the tip. Additionally, they charged 2% of 'Employee Health & Wellness'. I won't be returning to this restaurant. I had some hopes that this time might be different, but unfortunately, it wasn't. The prices were still way too high, and the portions were too small. What a difference a few years will make. First experience at Gado Gado was abysmal maybe 7+ years ago. Tapas sized portions for large parties with flavors that could not be understood because there wasn't enough food on the plates. Now in 2025 this restaurant is fucking fire . The service is on point. Super chill friendly staff. The drinks were crafted by a true artisan. Old fashion with a whiskey that doesn't taste like cough syrup. Dining room has moderate noise but you don't have to shout at the person across. Dim lighting and spacious seating (hate being crammed next to another table). Family style for 4 has enough food. 4 bites of satay skewers, siu mai, and the panipurri. Roti was crispy buttery chewy and all the main dishes like the clams in a green curry style soup with croutons, egg omelette with sweet and savory notes and shiso, beef redang that was succulent but dry is some parts. Payaya salad with fried crab was nice. Always want the Asian style super braised melt in the mouth meat tenderness for beef redang but everyone makes it different. Most importantly some really unexpected flavors hit and that launched my tastebuds on a journey. Lightyears beyond Thai, Vietnamese or other Asian fusion type entrees. Well done chefs. Excellent delivery. A good menu without hype that will make you think how can I deconstruct this at home? Desert was nice too. Apple cardamon cinnamon donuts without ice cream. I was excited to try Gado Gado after seeing Keith Lee's review. I don't think making a reservation was necessary because even though we made a reservation, the restaurant was spacious and had lots of open seating available. I really enjoyed my meal. Lots of different spices from natural ingredients. I enjoyed the sweet pea cocktail. There was a puree of pea at the bottom of my cocktail. Oma's rice was very delicious and filling between two people. I enjoyed the pea curry as a vegan. It was flavorful with chunks of green beans and mushrooms. It paired very nicely with the rice. The roti was my favorite! The tomato curry paired with the roti was delicious. Excellent service! My favorite go-to spot every time I'm in Portland no debate. As an Indonesian, finding a place that actually gets it is rare, but this one? They understood the assignment. The flavors are so authentic it feels like I time-traveled straight back to my childhood in Indonesia. Especially living in Seattle where Indonesian food is basically nonexistent, I treat coming here like a cultural reset. Emotional support meal. Healing experience. Therapy, but make it delicious. The big hits were the bay scallop crudo (absolutely delicious, spicy) and the lovely English pea and asparagus green curry, and we had high praise for the grilled chicken satay. The roti canai, which we shared, is a tasty bite. We also ordered Oma's rice and the zucchini and corn fritters, but the fritters came to the table so late we had to box them and take them home. The restaurant was packed and cheerfully noisy. Understandably mixed service given the crowds. Five stars (have to be generous given this was a birthday), even though the price on the roti ($16, and you're given only one) seems a bit over the top. read more

The last time I had an Indonesian rice table experience was in Amsterdam, so I was really excited to have this option in Portland. Cocktails are on theme. I got the Treat treat: vodka, pandan, coconut milk, coffee, ube foam. It was an interesting combination of flavors and was a fun drink. We got the Indonesian rice table, which is $89/person. Kids under age 12 don't have to participate, and they had a nice kids' plate that they brought our first for our little ones. It was a cute crab shaped plate with seasoned rice, hello panda crackers, and fruit. Most of the stuff is spiced, so this was much needed for younger kids. The rice table (they have a pescatarian option available also): - House pickles - Sambal: 4 types, 3 of which were seafood based, with lots to depth of flavor. You can use these throughout the meal - Panipuri with spicy pickled pineapple, tamarind puree - Balinese pork satay: a pork sausage with laksa curry, green strawberry, sambal matah, anchovy, peanut. I wiped up every last bit of the curry - Chinese sausage and shrimp siu mai: topped with aioli and roe - Bakwan sayur: green papaya and cabbage fritter with mint chili and sambal - Roti canai: the kids loved this, and it was great with the tomato curry - Oma's clove scented rice - Blistered heirloom tomato curry: so much depth of flavor - Ikan woku: Mandanese bouillabaisse - a seafood stew with a fragrant broth, cod, clams - Smoked chicken lawar: with greens, coconut, candied hazelnuts - a nice take on chicken salad - Wok fried herbal omelette: a bit greasy but actually kid friendly if your kids are good with herbs - Sumatran beef rendang: tons of flavor, food with rice and the green mango sambal. We were excited to try this Indonesian restaurant because they offer gluten-free options. We made it very clear when ordering that we needed specific dishes prepared gluten free. The food itself was tasty, and while it wasn't fully authentic Indonesian cuisine, we still enjoyed the flavors. Unfortunately, about two hours later I experienced a severe gluten reaction. For those who are gluten intolerant or have celiac disease, this was not a mild exposure. I became extremely nauseous and ill for several hours afterward. It seems possible the restaurant was very busy and the gluten-free request may not have been handled carefully. Because of this experience, I would strongly caution anyone with food allergies or sensitivities, and would recommend avoiding this place if strict allergy protocols are essential for you. read more

The staff were so welcoming and constantly interacting/communicating to give suggestions or let us know the ingredients. Food was stellar. Everything was filled with so much flavor. It was pricey and portions were fairly small so we had to order multiple dishes for 4 people - often ordering double portions of the same thing so every one could get more than a couple of bites. However, once I came back to my hotel and heated up my to go food/ leftover I did see a hair that wasn't mine in my Roti. A hair that wasn't mine. The food was great but that did deter me from returning. Making sure everyone in the kitchen's hair is tied up or anyone wrapping up your Togo food should be important. I wanted to give this place 5 stars so bad but now that I can't eat the remainder of my roti I paid for because of a piece of hair it's frustrating. But the food is great. Wow. Wow. WOW! We had heard amazing things about this restaurant, but we were still completely floored by the experience. It was outstanding from start to finish. We went for our dear friend's 40th birthday and ordered the Rice Table, which absolutely did not disappoint. The price per person is definitely on the spendier side, but overall, it felt totally worth it. You get to taste so many dishes, sauces, and accompaniments, including things you might never have thought to order on your own, and that made the whole experience feel really special. That said, we personally wouldn't recommend this restaurant for families with small children, since there may not be a lot for younger kids to eat. The atmosphere also feels much more suited for an adult night out or a special occasion. The service was fantastic. Every server we interacted with was friendly, hospitable, and attentive. The bartender was even kind enough to create an off-menu mocktail that was more suited to my palate, which felt incredibly thoughtful. We can't wait to go back. Great Indonesian spot in Portland! I came here for a work dinner, we had a large party so we had a prefix menu (the rice table) and everything was amazing! It had a good mix of small bites/appetizers and main dishes. It was family style like most Asian food. We got to try a bit of everything and it was all delicious! I love prefix menus because I can get decision fatigue so it's nice to have a meal already curated for you. I can't even pick a favorite dish since they were all hits. Absolutely delectable especially dipped into that peanut sauce. Soft Shell Crab Papaya Salad- Not as pungent as Lao or Thai style papaya salad. This one was more meatier because of the soft shell crab and the pineapple. It was also a little on the morw sweeter side than the pungent side. Gado Gado is technically a Indonesian Fusion restaurant which specializes in rice table meals. Rice table meals is basically eating family style. I am not sure as to where this started from but eating together as a family is part of the fabric of Indonesian/Malaysian lifestyle. Personally I have had Indonesian rice table meals a few times while working in Amsterdam. The experience and the food was fantastic. As for Gado Gado, the ambiance of the restaurant is very welcoming with various artifacts from the Indonesian culture adorning the walls. The restaurant maintained a casual atmosphere which was nice. Most of the dishes were OK but a few missed the mark entirely. The chinese sausage siu mai dumpling just tasted odd. The beef rendang though well cooked seemed a little weak in terms of spice. The four chili sauces that they presented, was described as spicy but I was definitely underwhelmed. The roti canai was also quite disappointing. I was hoping to trying the dish of their namesake but sadly that did not happen. The outstanding dishes were the coconut rice and the babi kecap. I have always felt that opening a restaurant from another country should not be made fusion but should be as authentic as any restaurant from that country. I got the roti with tomato curry - delicious. The chicken satay with peanut sauce was pretty good. This restaurant took care in thinking about the diner/food consumer experience. Even before you start eating, there is interesting interior design choices and art all throughout the restaurant with vibrant colors and lighting (even in the bathroom), which your eyes digest first. Now I concede that I have had limited opportunities for eating Indonesian food so this cuisine was unique to me, but it did have a lot of overlap with other types of food I have eaten (i.e. Chinese, Malaysian). My group ordered the following: Clove Scented Rice ($6) Roti Canai ($16) Siu Mai ($19) Corn Fritter ($15) Rendang ($30) Steak Tartare ($23) Each food item tasted delicious; however, please note the portion sizes and prices (see photos). You will have to order multiple plates to feel satisfied. I would say, you will spend at least $40 dollars per person (not including tip). In summary, come and taste Gado Gado's food for yourself! Didnt have to wait for drinks, & chow came out at a nice pace. The food! Awesome! We kicked things off w the ROTI CANAI ($16) which was bomb. Came with a tomato curry that was scrumptious. Next, ZUCCHINI & CORN FRITTERS (3 @ $16). Delicious, and not "mealie". Next, BAY SCALLOP CRUDO ($26). Wow! Sooooo good! Finally, BEEF RENDANG ($32). Dropped in around 6pm on a Tuesday only to find that all their tables were booked with reservations - - meaning our only option was the bar. Personally, I prefer sitting at the bar - - especially if it's the right set up. The bartender was quick to bring menus and offer water. It's pretty pricey, and we definitely weren't interested in the $89/person rice table, so we focused on the a la carte menu. They also have an Allergy Menu, which was much appreciated - - I didn't have to ask a million questions. Their cocktail menu included some tasty non-alcoholic drinks which was nice for our designated driver. Each of us ordered a couple things with the idea of sharing - - good thing because we were super hungry and the dishes didn't all come out at the same time. And, unfortunately, some things were enjoyed more than others. The bartender was fab - - friendly, efficient and very helpful. The space is pretty loud so we struggled a bit with conversation. Gado Gado's rice table was truly one of the best culinary experiences I've ever had. The dishes were inspired by various Asian cuisines and elevated in an exciting, flavorful way. There wasn't a single dish I wouldn't order on its own, however my favorites had to be the Siu-Mai and the coconut clam curry. The sambals were all uniquely bold and spicy. I left this meal very full so the description of it being a "feast" is definitely fitting. The only critique I have on the rice table experience is that they bring out all the non- appetizer dishes at the same time, which was a bit overwhelming and did mean some of the food wasn't eaten at the optimal hot temperature.
