I really like these guys!!! This is the second year that I have used Galena Sports as my go to for snow equipment. Need ski boots? They got you covered. Need a snow board. No problem! Need snowshoes. Easy peasy. Need chains for your sports car so you can hit the slopes on a perfect Blubird day? They got you!!! Heck, they'll even do a quick tune of your skis so you can fully enjoy your day. I have never been snowshoeing. When we showed up the guys engaged in a great conversation. They asked us where we were going. We let them know it was our first time and they gave us directions. They even gave us birdseed to feed the chickadees! The entire process took about 5 minutes. And you can't beat the price! We came in, I filled out a form, paid and we left. Super quick, super easy. I didn't have any questions as I had done my research on snowshoeing. I know if I had these guys would have told me everything I would need to know. This place has been here for a real long time. Right as you head up Mt Rose, you'll find this small outdoor snow gear shop. Easy to park, hop out and grab a pair or snow shoes or skis or boards to rent. They also have hats, warm clothing, sleds, goggles, etc for purchase. We were renting snow shoes for an out of town family member, easy process and the prices are reasonable. I think about $15 for the day. Comes with poles if you want them. I don't have much too compare it to, this is the only place we've rented from, but it works for us! read more

We decided after renting ski equipment for our son that we will not rent from any where else. The lady was great with helping picking ski boots out for him, and the owner was incredibly wise and super friendly, not to mention that he was knowledgeable and explained everything to us. All three employees were very pleasant. Its nice to finally find some place that treats you well. If your looking for rental equipment or maybe you forgot some winter clothing, stop in and they probably have it for you! I popped into Galena sports to rent some snow shoes for my first time out with some friends (of course we were going to Chickadee ridge!). The gentleman who helped me was friendly, helpful, and gave me a few snowshoeing pointers while he ran my card and sent me on my way. When he heard I was going to Chickadee, he made sure I had birdseed so I would be able to have the full experience--which was really appreciated as someone who often does things without fully preparing. Returning my gear was easy-peasy, but as a head's up they were out of snowshoes when I returned mine, so you will want to get there bright and early to guarantee that they'll have enough gear for you. Wow! I actually have never step foot into the store, but I made a purchase online. One of the shirts I ordered was out of stock so they immediately let me know and worked with me to find something that would work. Excellent response time, worked with me and my needs/wants and have been wonderful throughout. They even accidentally shipped one in the wrong size and again with no issue at all, are working with me to fix the situation. I found them because I was looking for local shops when I was up in the area boarding and happened to come up on their store and found some things I liked and are very specific to my heritage so it was a great find. Great mom and pops place that really cares about outfitting you with the right equipment! I've been dropping by this ski and board shop a few times a year for the past 3+ years and the service and equipment have always been great. I bought a pair of snowboard boots from them last year that were reasonably priced and have been holding up well. Last year they had a few beer coolers which was pretty nice after a long day on the mountain. My only advice is get them beer coolers back fellas! read more

This small shop is located right at the bottom of the road to get to Mt. Rose. It's kind of a "last-chance-to-get-all-your-stuff" kind of place. I needed new gloves and I wanted a beanie, so my BF and I popped in. The store is well stocked and organized. The man working there and the owner were both kind. I forget the name of the man who helped us out, but he was a retired firefighter. He knows so much about sports and is really helpful in guiding you to the items you need. He was able to find a pair of gloves for me for a very reasonable price. I also got a cute little beanie to keep my head warm while skiing on Mt. Rose. I am sure their prices for everything else are reasonable. The customer service is great. Definitely check it out if you are in Reno and you need some gear. read more

I rented snowshoes ($12) and snowshoe-appropriate boots ($5) here and was very pleased with the service and quality of products. Poles are also included in the price of renting snowshoes, but I already had a pair and didn't need to rent them. I asked some very beginner questions that the two employees answered happily, and when my friend came in to the store to meet me, one of the employees recognized her from when she rented snowshoes the prior week. She ended up liking snowshoeing so much that she bought a pair (from REI) during the week. It might be a little bit before I feel like researching and dropping dough on snowshoes, so until then I'll just rent from here. read more

***This review is solely based on the snowshoe rentals.*** I've rented snowshoes from here and from other places, and I have to say that these guys are the best in the Reno-Tahoe area. They're cheap, they work / they're durable, and the staff is always friendly and informative. Rentals here are only $12 per day! I know other places charge up to $15 or $20. Don't ever rent from Mt. Rose or from any ski resort. Before you head up, take ten minutes and stop by here. Ski and snowboard rentals are also cheap here. They go for $20 per day. The snowshoes they give out are one size fits all, so there shouldn't be a problem. Boots are highly recommended when snowshoeing, so if you don't have boots, you can also rent them out. I think they're $5 per day. Poles are also included when you rent. Sometimes they forget to give you poles, so just ask them if they're included. I also highly recommend the poles when snowshoeing, as they help with balance and stability. As for the quality of the snowshoes, they vary, but they're mostly good. I've never had problems with them, but my friends have had a couple. Sometimes the straps aren't very secure, causing your foot to slip out. And the poles can be weathered, used, and bent. If you've never gone showshoeing, ask the employees! They know what they're talking about, and they can teach you how to put them on. They're knowledgeable about the equipment, the weather, the mountain, and where to go if you're a first-timer. Overall, I always have a pleasant experience when renting from these guys. I jave been nosing around looking for a ski shop where I can talk to a person that has been around skiing and ski hills for a while, is a skier and knows the equipment, knows how to ACTUALLY fix and adjust it and WHY to do so! Galena sports is that place without a doubt. The fellow that greeted me when I walked in talked sense and was very knowledgeable, not to mention VERY helpful to me (as an older person, old time skier with "vintage" equipment). I will DEFINITELY be back there for any needed adjustments, repairs, advice and especially when it comes time to make purchases to update my equipment to what is more "state-of-the art". Great prices on ski and snowboard rental (best in town), inventory is good, equipment quality is good. The proprietor is friendly, helpful with finding the right gear, and flexible on return times. Other accessories (clothes, warming items, snow toys for the kids) are available for sale. His location is really for Mt. Rose or Diamond Peak, which is a shame if you are in north Reno and headed down I-80, but if you are passing through south Reno, this is the shop. read more

Let me start off by saying this review is regarding the consumer experience of the store and has nothing to do with politics, unlike the two unnecessary, appalling, and inappropriate reviews you may have seen below. Their reviews are not even regarding the store but are just about the fact that there may be a Trump/Pence sign. When you are reviewing on Yelp, you leave politics out of it because in no way will that affect how they serve you. Anyway, now onto the review: I have been renting skis from Galena Sports for 5 years now and they continue to do a stellar job. I arrived today at 4:30pm and was out the door with skis, poles, and boots by 4:45. When I entered the shop, I was greeted by Martin who was very helpful. I filled out the rental contract with my latest information and gave it to him. While I was filling out the contract, he had already grabbed some ski boots for me to try on. I tried them on, told him where my toe was, leaned back while standing up, and they were a great fit. When it came to skis, he asked me what level of skiing I was (beginner, intermediate, advanced), and had me with skis and poles in no time. Martin even noticed that the bottoms of the skis were a little rough so he waxed them for me to make sure they were super smooth. Finally, when I was about to pay, Martin brought to my attention that I had a 1 Day Credit for a free ski package that was written on my rental contract the previous year to the day (5th of January 2016) that hadn't been used. Because Galena Rentals had kept the old contracts, I was able to use this "coupon" to basically get free skis for the day (I was only renting them for one day). Martin was professional, helpful, and friendly. I will continue to use Galena Sports for my ski needs because they really help you out in a quick and efficient manner so you are able to easily get in and get out to the mountain in no time. read more

First time here and first time snowboarding. Tom helped us out on getting our boots and snowboards. We got there around 3ish and he informed us that the Mount Rose ski resort closes their lifts at 4pm. He told us we can still rent out the gears overnight and charge us one time since we weren't able to use it till the next day. Rental prices are GREAT!
