They used to be on South Wedge but have since out grown the space and are now on W Ridge Road in Spencerport in the Braemer Golf Club. I learnt that Ukrainian cuisine shares a lot of overlap with Polish cuisine. I enjoyed trying the cabbage rolls (Holubtsi), pickled vegetable dish, Salo (cured bacon) assortment of Ukrainian dumplings (Varenyky), borsch, and potato pancakes (Deruny). I also had their pork shashlyk and potato/egg plant dish. Though the pork was marinated very nicely, it was a bit too dry and tough for my liking. I think the quality of the food is good but the flavor profile was a little redundant for me, so this is probably more of a taste preference difference then. My impression was the whole menu was potatoes in every dumpling form, lots of dill, butter, sour cream, and cheese. Yes the actual dough was airy but a very heavy meal here that can leave those intolerant of oils and cheese to feel a little full. Good service and definitely a good group experience for those wishing to try new cuisine. Potato pancakes- similar to latkes- oily and decadent. Latkes are usually shredded potatoes and this was more potatoes dough. Still good. Nalysnyky- it was somewhat of a folded mini crepes with a savory stuffing that went with a chicken noodle soup. It was heavy on the dill which is why you have to be in the right mood to appreciate this dish. Varenyky- potato dumplings with lots of cheese. Usually good but definitely heavy on dill and a bit too cheesy for me. Would not get if you're sensitive to oil. You don't find many Ukrainian restaurants, but here we are! This cozy restaurant in the South Wedge neighborhood was very welcoming. I stopped in for lunch one day when I was in the area. I was greeted by a helpful server who asked if I was familiar with Ukrainian food (I am) then let me peruse the menu. They have a wide selection of potato pancake and verenyky (pierogies) amongst other Ukrainian favorites (stuffed cabbage, sausage, borscht, etc) . It's cozy I came specifically for Chicken Kyiv, a favorite of mine since growing up in NYC, and The Russian Tea Room. The Chicken Kyiv, just as I remember it. Crispy on the outside, a rolled chicken breast oozing herbs and butter in the center. I added some salt & pepper. It comes with two scoops of creamy mashed potatoes with a mushroom gravy. Loved it. I wanted to try something new and Galicia's glowing Yelp reviews led me to try Ukrainian cuisine for the first time. Who would have thought my first Ukrainian food experience would be in Rochester. I visited for lunch on a Friday and I was the first one there at 11 am. I made sure they served their lunch menu (menu says 12pm onward) before sitting down. Being unfamiliar with Ukrainian cuisine, it took me awhile to study the menu. My waiter, Damian, sensed my uneasiness and helped to explain the menu. He made a few recommendations. I ended up ordering their "Savoring Ukrainian" Set which is a sampling of potato pancakes (2), potato varenyky (5), cabbage roll, sauerkraut, sour cream and mushroom gravy. Everything was delicious, but my favorite items were the potato dumplings and the cabbage roll (which had meat in it). To my pleasant surprise, Damian brought out a free sampling of a dish I was asking him about earlier: salo. It reminded me of uncooked bacon (pretty much is except from the pork back). It was different but good (buttery texture and salty) and was served with with spicy green garlic dressing. He also gave me a free sample of Kvass, a slightly carbonated sweet and sour drink that reminded me of a cola but is actually a fermented rye malt beverage. The food is was tasty. Damian's friendliness and eagerness to promote Ukrainian food was also a highlight of the lunch. I will definitely be back and will try to spread a good word about Galicia. read more

We've gone twice now to their beautiful new (and much larger) location in Spencerport. The drive from Rochester was just 20 minutes and the trip is well worth it. I just had lunch at Galicia's new location today. It was my first time at the restaurant, and it was amazing. The atmosphere was lovely. We sat outside in the shade next to the golf course. It was quiet and perfect for catching up with an old friend. We shared the Savoring Ukrainian and the Ukrainian Gastronomic Experience platters. Both were outstanding. The first entree came with two potato pancakes, dumplings, cabbage rolls and sauerkraut with mushroom gravy and sour cream. Everything was fantastic, but the cabbage role was the best I have ever had and the sauerkraut was the perfect side. Our server was also delightful and took the time to guide us through the menu. Galicia moved to their new site at Braemar Country Club this past summer. There is plenty of parking and the restaurant overlooks the golf course. My companion and I ordered the Savoring Ukranian and Ukranian Homemade Sausages to sample as many items as possible. Our meal was authentic and everything tasted wonderful with the variety we desired: sausages, potato pancakes, varenvky (Ukranian dumplings),saurkraut, roasted potatoes, peppers, onions, pickled tomato, cabbage roll and wonderful muchroom gravy. The waiter was very attentive and helpfull and we enjoyed talking with him and his brother--it is a family business. My wife, daughter and I had lunch here on Sunday afternoon. The restaurant is in the clubhouse on a golf course...was not expecting that. All the reviews and pictures of the restaurant showed a nice atmosphere. I was Very Disappointed how the restaurant represented itself. We decided to go ahead and eat so we ordered their appetizer trio...disappointing, there was nothing special about the appetizers, and it was suppose to come with zucchini which they were out of so cheese sticks were substituted in their place. Do Not order this, it is a waste money. My wife had the sampler plate with potato pancakes, cabbage rolls, and pierogis; daughter had Borsch soup and pierogis , and I had the Chicken Kyiv. My wife said her meal was just ok, not what she was expecting, daughter did not like the soup and said she has had much better. My Chicken Kyiv was very good, the mashed potatoes were creamy and smooth. However it took about 25 minutes to prepare and instead of plating all the food at once and bring it out at the same time, they brought my wife's and daughters out while I just sat and watched them eat, 10 minutes later my food came out. As for the waitstaff, not very attentive, once the meal was delivered he never returned to see if everything was ok with the meal or to even refill our drinks. The cost of the meal was over $100.00! For what we ordered for lunch it was way overpriced. We will not be going here again. read more

This was my first Ukrainian restaurant experience and we were pleased! When my brother and I arrived, it was empty so we were able to seat ourselves immediately. It is a small restaurant with about 6-ish tables. They have an extensive menu and the server was nice enough to point us to things that we should try for our first Ukrainian food experience. We ordered the potato pancakes with a delicious mushroom sauce and chicken meat and the turkey dumplings. The pancakes were the definite hit of our experience. The fried potatoes were perfect, as was the mushroom sauce, the chicken, the cheese and the dill. We both highly recommend this. The dumplings were bland. We were told that the turkey dumplings were the best of the lot. However, we both felt that the turkey meat should've had some kick to it. The vinegar sauce was very salty and tart. A less tart sauce would've made this more wholesome. We ended the meal with the Kyiv cake, which was supposed to be freshly made. We both aren't really fans of desserts, especially cakes, but this was a pleasant surprise as it wasn't too sweet. The slice was definitely to be shared. The addition of nuts to the cake balanced the sweetness. There was a crispy cracker layer, which we enjoyed. All in all, we liked the restaurant and the guy working there. The food is pretty good. I would recommend checking them for sure and definitely try their potato pancakes. Parking is primarily street parking so good luck with that! The neighborhood isn't absolutely the best, so I would recommend coming here with people during the day. read more

My wife and I have eaten here twice in the past few weeks. The restaurant has just opened and they are off to a great start. The interior is clean and there is a decent amount of seating. The first time we went was for dinner. The Potato Pancakes are the best that we've had in Rochester - seasoned to perfection and fried to give a great crispy exterior, while the inside was tender and delicious. The sour cream and dill complement them perfectly. We also had the Cabbage Rolls, which had beef and chicken filling, and came with a side of mashed potatoes and pickled tomatoes. The rolls were moist and rich, with a nice balance of sharpness from the cabbage. The tomatoes blew us away, so much so that we asked if they were sold separately. They aren't, but the waiter was nice enough to bring us a few extra, which was greatly appreciated! Finally, the Bograch, a Carpathian shepherd's soup, was richly seasoned with paprika and had a great warming, mild spiciness that built up. Hearty chunks of beef and tender vegetables make me look forward to eating this again when it's cold out. The second time was for lunch. This time we ordered the "Ukrainian Culinary Delights" combo (featuring Borsch, Varenyky and Toast) as well as an order of Beef Pelmeni. The Borsch was satisfying, with a balanced of richness and tartness. Tender pieces of beef melted in your mouth, and the various veggies (beets of course, carrots, potatoes, beans, etc) were well cooked but still held their form without becoming mushy. The Varenyky (potato filled dumplings akin to Pierogies) were nicely plated with a healthy dollop of sour cream, and garnished with delicious fried onions. Inside each dumpling, the generous amount of potato filling was creamy and nicely seasoned, while the dough struck a pleasant balance of being tender with a bit of chew. The Beef Pelmeni, meat filled dumplings similar to gyoza or tortellini, was a very generous serving. When the plate came out and I saw how many there were, I thought there was no way I'd finish them all. Spoiler alert, I finished them all, because they were delicious. Every one had great texture inside and out, from the juicy, tender beef to the dough that once again had the perfect amount of chewiness and tenderness. They were seasoned with some herbs and spices, but lightly enough to let the flavor of the dumplings be the star of the show. The service from the waiter (who I believe is the chef's son) is excellent. He is friendly, attentive and does a great job explaining dishes. He even went above and beyond on our second visit, by bringing us a complimentary bowl of the delicious pickled tomatoes since we liked them so much the first time. Galicia has very quickly become one of my favorite spots in Rochester. Go with an appetite! read more

A warm and cozy restaurant with about six tables. The food was excellent. I ordered borsch which was excellent. The serving was huge and it definitely was a meal. The veggies and beef were well cooked but not mushy. My husbanded ordered the VARENYKY with potato that he said were "just right." We also ordered a sampler plate with varenyky, potato pancakes, stuffed cabbage, sauerkraut, and pickled tomatoes. We ended up too full to eat it, so we brought the entire thing home to reheat tomorrow. We did taste the tomato because others raved about them. They were correct. They have a bright taste. Delicious. Best of all, the service was fabulous. The young man was friendly, knowledgeable, and patiently answered all our questions. He told us a story about his father and family at home because they all needed hearty servings for working hard. I just ate dinner at Galicia's and honestly, I think I had one of the best meals of my life. We had varenyky (Ukrainian dumplings) with mushrooms, with potatoes and farmer's cheese, and with sauerkraut, as well as the cabbage rolls. Unbelievably delicious! The varenyky were incredibly light and almost airy, each kind accompanied by a different sauce or gravy. We also split the Kyiv cake and the "cheesecake", which was really like small warm light cheeses served with jam, sour cream, and a mountain of beautiful fruit.
