DO NOT GO HERE. Where to begin? They advertise a $25 brunch then charge $30. They say a "pitcher" is $12, then hand you a miniature pitcher as if they didn't just scam you. They say they have sangria, so we order it and they respond "ohh yeah we don't have that." I waited 45 minutes for drinks when the place was completely empty, what a waste. We were offered free drinks after waiting so long for service, then the bill came and we were charged for everything. Other yelpers have noted "Easily the best kept secret for Sunday football." Well, I'm not so sure about the secret part as it's always packed for football, but I would agree that this is a great place to come catch a game. It's a decent bar with a nautical feel to it. The Galway Hooker is a sailing boat used in the Galway bay, off the coast of Ireland. The hooker (we're still talking about the boat here now... not whores) was designed to get through the strong seas in that area. See... now if nothing else and you never step foot in the joint you have learned something new today! It's a good low key pick for non-football weekend day drinking and M-F happy hour. It's also of course a great pick for football, just be ready for a crowd. It can also get crowded on Sat nights as any decent spot in the WV does. Service and drinks are nothing special, but the atmosphere is fun, the crowd is good, and it's not expensive. Also... don't compare it to the Midtown version (where some of the patrons actually look like cheap hookers). The WV one is hands down in a whole different league. read more

I typically go here for football on Sunday because its close to where some friends live - much like many people have already said, its a douche-fest so I avoid it in the evenings at all costs. Same thing - the first bartender was probably the worst I've ever had (although a nice guy - just a horrendous bartender). First he forgot my friends beer that he had ordered. When we mentioned it he grabbed it from under the tap - apparently it didn't strike the lone bartender as odd that there was an entire full beer just sitting under a tap. Then one of the kegs ran out. Ok, no biggie so it sputters a bit, we've all seen it. No, this exploded, shot beer out under the device, onto the table and all over my arms and some of my clothes. Does this get me a free drink? Heck no. Finally the bartender comes over and says that they're changing shifts so can we please pay up? Sure thing we say. He gives us the bill, we pay, and then we watch as he works for ANOTHER HALF HOUR. Really? At which point, and this is what I mean when I say he was a nice guy just really incompetent, he leaves without taking the tip we left on the bar. Is this not strange? The backup bartender ignored us so much (but found time to make sure all the glasses in the back were in perfect alignment - seriously I think he was OCD about it - drink serving? Not really his thing...) that we laid our beer bottles flat on the bar. It was just a joke at this point and we wanted to see what would happen. Favorite thing with the new bartender - he sees my friends' bottle, picks it up and eyes it, sees that there's nothing really in there, then puts it back down on its base and walks away. We just lost it laughing. My friend noted that perhaps we could order new ones since those were empty. If you have a sense of humor, it may be one of your funniest bar experiences but less enjoyable if you would like to get a chance to order a drink. read more

This place would be so cool if they had just named it something else and kept the signature Galway brand douchebaggery at bay. As it is, with the name on the sign attracting the associated clientele, Downtown Galway is an impossibly dense sea of argyle, hair gel, and discarded LIRR ticket stubs. It's really too bad, because the expansive three floor interior could support a really fun night out with a more manageable scene, but it's got such a packed meat market vibe, even with all the space, and there are so many other fun bars in the area, that it's tough to stay there long. The good news is that the drinks are cheap, and the bartenders are very conscious of the amount of time you'll have to wait to get served, so they'll comp you a round or two once they learn your face. Also, the inside is really nice, with plush couch/table space on the third floor, pool on floor two, and a huge bar at the entrance. It's probably great for a happy hour away from the weekend craziness, but on a Saturday night, I would not recommend for the 25 and over crowd. read more

I had a certain prejudice against Downtown Galway Hooker even before I stepped through the front door. Perhaps it was the questionable company her older Midtown sister keeps - you know, the douchebags. And sure, while some of them managed to find their way to below 14th Street to hang around the hotter, younger sister, it's fair to remark she attracts a more respectable crowd. Downtown Galway Hooker is a fashionable girl as it seems she got the memo on the resurgence of the popular nautical trend as of late. The interior suggests to the patron that they are inside the belly of an 18th century schooner. Sometimes, it was classy. The artwork behind the bar and the library ladder leaning against shelves of liquor are nice touches. Then again, sometimes I got seasick. What's with the stuffed otter under glass on the third floor? Was this something they trapped upon reaching land? To be fair, when comparing this pub against the Midtown staple, the Downtown sister is more my type. And by my type, I mean, not as big of a whore. Before you call me crude, please refer to the word "hooker" in the establishment's name. Despite the multiple floors, be forewarned, it can get pretty tight. I can't even imagine this place on the weekend. I could barely move on a Wednesday, so it's pretty safe to say, I'll keep Downtown Galway Hooker reserved strictly as an after-work happy hour bar, but a surprisingly decent one at that. Ahoy! Reviewer's Note: I've since been informed that a Galway Hooker is "a traditional sailing boat used in Galway Bay off the west coast of Ireland", and not, I repeat, not a prostitute. $12 for 6 wings is ludicrous enough, but we ordered 4 plates and found 5 wings on each plate....so $48 for 20 wings. We mentioned it to the server (who was very nice), and he came over to say that they were actually the last of the wings as the kitchen had run out..so clearly rather than just say that they'd run out and just charge for 3 orders, the kitchen put 5 wings on each place hoping we wouldn't notice. I say again, $48 FOR 24 WINGS! I understand it's an expensive area, but that is just ridiculous. The bar is fairly standard faux Irish sports bar with the typical West Village crowd. Galway has all the makings of an awesome post-college bar: - it's loaded with good-looking people - the bar setup on three different floors is akin to a fraternity house hall crawl - the selection of brews is admirable That's why I was dumbfounded that they are getting away with ignoring crowd control. Walking up stairs filled by people who had decided that it was the most appropriate place to plant for the night to have a conversation (I'm sure it was) gave me flashbacks to the tragic Great White concert at the Station Night Club. Note: 100 people died that night. Also, I observed 4 separate people get drinks spilled on them just by attempting to walk back from closing their tab, and then there was the poor guy who ate it sliding down the staircase, AKA me. This pub is a welcome addition to an open stretch of 7th near W10th street. I am always looking for pub type locations in this area to host happy hour and on this particular visit, it was for the night of Game 6 of the World Series. When I arrived all the tables in the front were reserved but I was able to get a big stretch of bar for our crew that worked out perfectly as they have a huge projection screen that is sort of hidden that they then put down right by the bar for the game. This bar is surprisingly large with the upper levels being more homey pub feel, and less sports-oriented if you prefer to avoid whatever game is on. The service was good, drink were decently priced though one of the beers on tap was tapped out. The food was pretty good but nothing exceptional. We had a quesadilla, calamari and potato skins (which I'd rate in that order). Seeing as the Yanks won and we shut the place down in the wee hours, the night was definitely a success and I'm sure I'll be back for some future happy hour meet up. read more

Review for private event. Reserved space for a private get-together after the Marathon - so a Sunday evening at 4PM. The reservation was easy to make, and the space a good fit for what we needed (the room just off the stair case near the bar, screen-like walls that give privacy but still make you feel a part of the bar, fit about 30 people). Staff were great and attentive, Hector was our waiter and consistently checked-in on us. We ordered an array of bar food that all hit the spot. That was hard to find for some reason so we settled on this place because at least it had windows open to the outside. We were lucky enough to snag a table. We stayed long enough to each have one drink and to share two appetizers and then we moved on. The seating was way cramped, our waitress mostly ignored us, and I was just over it before it began. My friends got french fries with a curry dipping sauce. I also love curry but the fries were just fries. We ordered nachos and there were a ton of chips, mostly with nothing on them. Seems like a hidden gem in the often out of control east village. Stumbled upon this place while starving and looking for a place to sit down. I was impressed by the size of the space as it spans three floors. Drinks were affordable for the city and the food was decent. The bartender was really friendly and bought us a few rounds, which you don't really see much anymore in the manhatten. What I cannot omit is the fact that the food took FOREVER to come out. I'm talking almost an hour for a burger and a sandwich. I don't care if it's crowded or dead, this can't really be forgiven. I spent a Sunday watching football games at the Galway Hooker Pub. It's a decent football watching venue, but not great. Seating's quite limited; I'd say about 50% of the guests were standing the entire time (including myself). TV options are plentiful, and the beers are decent. Great pub with great authentic food. I had studied abroad in Dublin, and I felt this pub was quite authentic. Nice to have the breezy summer night blowing through the window - as they take the windows out in the summer months. Seemed like a very popular place to watch the World Cup when I was there! I think the reason this place has 3 stars is because people get frustrated that it can get a little too #turnt, is filled with frat boys, drunk people, and can be extremely crowded. Yes, these are absolutely accurate facts. Don't come here for a relaxing cath-up evening with friends. Nuts to butts. Nuts. To. Butts. That's sums up all I have to say about this downtown tri-level extension of the midtown mainstay. On a recent Friday night around midnight it took my friend and I a solid 15 minutes just to make our way through the many floors and spaces of this [somewhat crowded] behemoth to realize our other friends hadn't yet arrived. Ordering a drink at the bar upstairs took a certain panache that a contortionist would appreciate. The bar is shaped like an acute triangle and that means people funnel into a smaller and smaller space with no exit at the other end (this is most noticeable on the 3rd floor). Logistically, it just doesn't really make sense. I guess that's just what you get at 11pm on a Friday night. Oh, and they didn't have Maker's Mark the night I was there. But they do have a pool table on the 2nd floor. These two attributes do not cancel each other our. Overall impression: once our friends arrived and we found a nice spot to set up shop (and truly didn't move from that spot until it was time to leave), it was actually a decent place to hang out. But man, for a moment there I was sure that I was gonna get slapped by a someone for an unintentionally inappropriate brush-up as I slipped past. Not cool. Otherwise, this is just another generic bar for the 20-something crowd and the 30-something who's still young at heart. read more
