Thankfully I came here on a football-free weekday night, which reading other reviews seems to determine if this place is tolerable or not. My friend and I sat near-ish the entrance so we didn't get sucked into the louder groups, and were able to sit at a table and close out the evening nicely. We had a few rounds of their porters, which the bartender let us both try first to make sure we like it. We had to flag him down when returning to the bar for each round, but that wasn't a big deal. Solid spot for casual drinks. There is a garage door type window that rolls up when the weather is nice, so it feels like you are siting outside. Crowd was relatively young and good looking. I will return again if in the area, but probably will not make a special trip. read more

This place was the closest to Fish Bar that could accomadate our party of 9 on a rainy Wednesday night. The service was great and attentive. My only problem was their lousy selection of music that night. They were playing Euro club/techno music when I thought the idea was that it's an Irish Pub establishment. No matter, there were no mess up on drink or food orders and a good option for when you're party is on the larger side. PS: I also appreciated the clean bathrooms and peppermint hand soap. read more

Came here late on a Saturday night, despite the other negative reviews, my experience wasnt the same personally. Its 3 floors, yea, but each floor is very narrow so in reality its probably 1.5 / 2 floors worth. It was packed so everything was tight. We opted to stay in the "confessional room" and I guess that's why it wasnt so bad. Drink service was quick as well. The music wasnt that great at first. Then it got better then great and then started to suck again. Hit or miss. I guess I'd come back maybe if I was close but no rush. read more

Met a friend for a drink at the bar. First, unlike another Yelp-er I did not have a hard time finding this place. There is no neon sign but the name is etched into the glass and the address is easy to find. Onion rings are totally worth it. They aren't officially on the menu but can be ordered as a side. Oddly enough, it was FREEZING in the bathroom and there was only cold water. This may be an awesome feature in July...but not in January. read more

Great space. They let us have the second floor room for a going away party, which was very gracious. However, I'm giving an almost undeserved 3 stars is because of a pub game that they supposedly have. I like this place for a meet up with friends! I can't remember what the upstairs is like since it's been a while since I have been but the downstairs has a good bar. The annoying part is when the area near the entrance gets crowded and you're right by the window area next to it (not much place to move at that point). Their drinks are reasonably priced! This place is boring, and kinda sucks. I won't be going back. A friend of mine was visiting from out of town and staying with our other friends. Someone in their group suggested this place, and as I had not been there, could not object on name alone, though it's a stupid one. We entered and went straight to the back and up the stairs to the second floor. Both floors look similar and were filled with yuppie looking people. It was a Friday night, at like 11, and everyone looked like they just came from work, in a horrible Brooks Brothers way (I don't have any problem with dressing up for work, but I think this is just how the clientele dresses). It was mostly 20-30 somethings, but there were a fair amount of AARP members present. While we were drinking and talking at the bar, some guy came over and started trying to take our picture. It seemed as if were at some function that we did not accept an invitation to (but that was not the case). I told him we didn't want to be photographed, and he seemed a little confused that I wasn't into it. The beers were 7 dollars, which isn't awful, but it's not good either. The only reason I give it two stars is because it didn't take very long to get drinks, and the waitstaff was perfectly agreeable. read more

Arrived around 7:00PM on a Friday night and had an hour left of the happy hour ($4 wells, wine, and beer) - got great loaded chicken nachos ($13) and had a good time meeting up after work. Can see how it gets a little "bro-friendly" as the night progresses. Ended up leaving around 8:45PM to move on. Service was very attentive, which isn't always the case during the last 30 mins of a decent happy hour. Nothing to write home to your mother about, Galway Hooker seems to be just like any other bar you've been to. They do have little nooks and crannies you can hang out in which makes it nice for larger groups. All in all, the best part about Galway is Sunday, where you'll find 1/2 off all drinks -- not a bad deal. read more

There's a loft space that's great for big groups if you call ahead to reserve it. The food is bar fare, nothing mindblowing but worth ordering. The atmosphere and service is right where it should be if you're looking to toss back a few drinks with friends or coworkers. read more

Well, ok. It's a fine place to come drink with your friends. We had a decent enough time. They have a multiple floors with 2 large bar areas. It was a perfect place for us to come watch the game. They have some cool tables upstairs that are nice and cozy. We ordered the guacamole and chips. The guacamole was surprisingly good, but the chips were below average.... kinda stale. I did win a shot for checking in on Yelp, so that was a plus! read more

The blonde bartender lost my debit card and the manager called me crazy. I gave my card to the bartender and she lost it. I went back and they told me they don't have a record of my card and told me it was too busy to look for it and to call the next day. Then I spoke to the manager and he called me crazy because they didn't have my debit card. Then they proceeded to kick us out of the bar. Do I have my debit card? No! As a New Yorker for the last 20 years, I was very disappointed in the awful attitude of the bartender. Perhaps I'm lucky - but, I have never encountered such rudeness. I have been on the receiving end of directness & acerbic attitudes in the service industry ( & normally I forgive a lot having once been in the same unforgiving line of business) but have never experienced this level of disdain for paying guests. I suspect it was my "tell tale accent of origin" which is interesting, as the bartender was not from New York, either. I went to Galway Hooker last night and hung my coat up on the coat rack, an hour later found it missing...After speaking with security and asking them to check the cameras, they pulled my coat out of the back oddly enough. I was perplexed and very upset but didn't get angry. They gave excuses saying they were "protecting" my coat. I have a lot of valuables in my nice coat. They said I should thank them for keeping a look out for my coat. I said my coat was fine where it belonged on the coat rack. I saw my hat missing, then they gave me crap about it saying "now your testing us". I jsut wanted my hat back and oddly enough once again here it comes out of the back room... I had 5 good friends with me that were all not happy knowing they tried to steal my coat thinking I wouldn't notice. Needless to say I will never go back there again, but the sad part the manager was drunk at the bar! read more

I've lived the in neighborhood for 3 years and quite honestly, this is exactly what we needed. This downtown outpost of the midtown original is basically an Irish pub-like bar with a decent selection of beers on tap and unpretentious staff and patrons. The music is not that obnoxious frat or house music and is not so loud that you can't hear your friends. The bartenders were nice and accommodating when we went there for my roommate's birthday. If you want to go out with friends for a fun evening out without any of the usual manhattan scene-killers (bankers, suits, fashionistas), Galway Hooker's a good option. Similarly I could easily spend an afternoon here having some beers and watching some baseball or football. On the second level, next to the pool table, there's a strange, albeit fun, ring tossing game. read more

I've never been treated so poorly by a "bouncer" in my life. Four of my friends and I were standing on the sidewalk outside of the Downtown Galway Hooker and were yelled at by the bouncer, "Either get inside or leave!" To which I replied, "It's a public sidewalk buddy, chill. We're just waiting for our other friends to catch up to us before we go inside." After this, the bouncer continued to harass us - and i mean HARASS. After the rest of our party had joined us, we proceeded to enter the bar only to have our IDs scrutinized and be talked down to by the crude bouncer. One of my friends made a remark about the bouncers attitude at which point the bouncer tried to fight him! Are you kidding me? Relax, man. But on Sunday through Wednesday they have the whole anything made in America special and after a long day of work, can't beat a cheap drink. The crowd here is always bad. This is a great spot in the heart of west village. The music and crowd is always lively. The place can get super busy but I've always experienced great service from the various bartenders and servers I have interacted with. Food is hot and fresh, much better than most bar food I have had in the city. My personal favourites that never disappoint are the Hooker burger and the chicken fajita wrap. I've been going here since I moved to the city the last 5 years and am never disappointed. I've met both owners & they are so chill and always buy rounds for their regulars. Overall a great place for either a more chill night during the weekdays or when you want to let loose a little on the weekends read more
