My daughter had this for the first time and basically fell in love with it. My little one can knock out a couple of these in one sitting. It's a cute little spot with delicious food. What more can we ask for? The tuna is the one we can't get enough of. Other flavors are good too, but this is the one you must order. The unagi is also good. Other places we've tried didn't have the right type of rice and were sometimes hard. I have nothing bad to say about this place. Although, I wish they were open on Sundays. Saw the menu, wasn't impressed so I ordered elsewhere. Coworker ordered anyway. Upon seeing what he ordered I immediately changed my mind and I went that night for dinner. For those of you like me, who are confused at the whole concept, it's pretty simple. It's like sushi, in the sense that it's meat wrapped with seaweed and rice, but instead of raw fish, it's other things like chicken, pork, Shrimp, etc. And instead of a roll, it's a ball made of rice with the meat (or other not meat fillers) inside. And you wrap that ball with a piece of seaweed (which I thought I'd hate but I actually loved it). Now here's what I tried and how I felt: Spicy shrimp ball - 5 stars Spicy pork ball - 3.7 stars (was a bit bland) Salmon ball: 4 stars but I wouldn't order again because the salmon and rice were a bit of a weird flavor match for me Teriyaki chicken ball: 3 stars (I wasn't too impressed with this one, mostly because it was thigh meat, and I don't like thigh meat. All of the chicken here is thigh meat, which makes me a bit sad). Spicy-tuna hand roll: 4.5 stars (it comes wrapped in a plastic thing and the seaweed is wrapped separately. I was so hungry I could not figure out how to open it, although I'm sure there is a way to do it, it didn't seem obvious in the moment. So you have to roll it yourself, not a big deal because it rolls so perfectly, just a bit unexpected) The parking lot is behind the restaurant and is not accessible from Brand Blvd. You have to go past the restaurant (going north on Brand) and turn right (east) on Wilson and then right (south) on Maryland to get into the garage. I believe it's 1 hour free. If you go over, Gam Tu Bop won't validate it. How much to order: Pretty much anyone can get full off of 3 balls and a miso soup or a hand roll. The cost is amazing. Very cheap. The ONE suggestion I would LOVE to see is a Poké ball. I would buy soooo many of those if they were available. Onigiri/Musubi is one of my fav quick comfort foods and this place does it right! I thought I would need soy sauce or sriracha, but i was wrong. All their rice balls and rice rolls are super flavorful and have a good amount of filling in them. Not sure what happened with my experience here, but this was really expensive for what it was. We got the Combo A (the combo is pretty much the same price as buying the rolls individually except you get some edamame and a little tiny salad thing... you're probably better off just going individually unless you were getting 3 anyway) - and I went with chicken teriyaki, beef, and tomago. To start, the beef is pretty damn good. It's definitely bulgolgi flavored (a little salty/sweet for some), but I personally enjoyed the crap out of it. If only the rest were this good. The tomago was alright - a bit overcooked for tomago, but this is more of a fast-casual place than a high-end Japanese restaurant so I understand. Not bad. The chicken teriyaki, although having the most filling inside, was definitely the worst tasting. There was definitely not enough sauce and honestly, I'm almost glad it was that way because the chicken itself tasted off. After seeing how bad it was, half our party decided to not order and go somewhere else instead (and there's plenty of places to try nearby!) Came here and ordered a rice ball combo, following the directions on the menu only to find that they were charging me 1.5x more than the price stated on the menu. When I asked why, the server told me that the prices were wrong and they've changed all of their prices since. When I order off any menu, I expect to be paying the price that is on the menu, and if the price is incorrect or has changed, I expect that they could update it asap or give me a disclaimer and not wait until after I was done ordering to surprise me with an entirely different price. I cancelled my order and left and probably won't be back because I thought it was terrible practice to keep up a menu with misleading prices and not disclose the discrepancy until charging the customer. read more

FOOD I ordered the #1 combo $8.00-$9.95 (depends on the type of rice balls you order) which comes with three rice balls, edamame, and ginger. There are many different fillings to choose from, I got Kimchi, Chicken Curry, and Beef. They were all pleasantly delicious! Each ball was stuffed with a generous portion of filling so that the rice doesn't amount for most of the meal like some places. The ingredients were all very flavorful and savory. SERVICE Not much to say about the service, you just order your food and sit down at a table until they bring it to you. The cashier was friendly and descriptive of the different flavors they had and recommended to me some of the popular ones. CONCLUSION After one visit, I'm already hooked. Man, I love this place! It's cheap and delicious. I love the mushroom rice balls. I order two of those, and I am good to go! I haven't tried the other things on the menu, because I always end up ordering the mushroom balls. It's very filling, but in a good way. You order at the counter and then the staff delivers it to your table. The actual restaurant is fairly small. There's a counter with high chairs and a couple tables. If you're in a big group, I would recommend ordering to-go. It's an easy dish to eat while walking so no worries if there are no seats available. I can't wait to go back! After reading all the high reviews I decided to give this place a try. The portions are decent and ratio of toppings to rice is excellent. It's all about the ratio when it comes to rice balls. Unfortunately the flavor wasn't there. I ordered tried a variety of toppings. I've tried the chicken curry, beef, unagi, and salmon. The chicken good and balanced nothing over the top. The beef was unfortunately way too salty, and whenever I'm eating beef bulgogi I look for a balance of salty to sweetness and a bit of the caramelization from the onions. Unfortunately all I tasted was salt and sugar. Wrap it with seaweed and it off with furikake you now need a large glass of water! I personally love the rice balls from Sunny Blue in Santa Monica, and hoped that this place would be just as good. It's a small place that looked nice and clean. They had complimentary fruit flavored water which was a nice touch. There wasn't a line when we went and service was prompt. We ordered a crab rice ball and a curry chicken rice ball, both which were very reasonably priced. Their size was good and were promptly made. The crab rice roll was very tasty, and reminded me of a giant California roll. The curry chicken rice ball was filled with a good amount of chicken, but flavor was just OK. This is such a great little spot. The rice balls are perfectly sized for a snack. If you want a meal, just get several! My fave flavors are unagi and tuna, although I've been happy with everything I've tried here. They also have a couple of rolls, if that's your thing. I think their fountain drink dispenser is currently unavailable but whenever it's back up, the artisanal sodas are a must try. There's a pineapple soda I really love. Their current setup is as good as it can be given the small space. It's pretty easy to maintain distance and they're pretty quick about getting orders out. I ordered the two rice ball combo, which only cost about $7. Had I known how filling the rice balls were, I would have ordered them separate from the combo. As you can tell I don't review often but when I do it is because something went very right or very wrong. We have been coming to Gam Tu Bop for years (never again) but recently noticed two things. 1. The quality of the food is slipping. Last time we ate here everyone felt a little off afterwards. Tonight it was clear that all the fish was old, smelled rank, and tasted like it had gone bad weeks ago. We threw it all out. And then called to ask the owner why the food has been off lately and he hung up on us. 2. The owner is a truly awful human. We witnessed him deny a young girl the use of his bathroom. She was clearly in pain and he simply said "no". Which is not even the worst part. The worst part is he hid in the back and made his young employees deal with it. I felt so bad for them. The parent was clearly upset and the owner just hid in the kitchen until he left. It is no wonder you will never see the same person working there twice. But the health department should really look at this place. If after reading this review you still go, then what happens is on you. Places like this do not deserve our support. In a town FILLED with great sushi, why eat at a place that might make you sick, that is owned by an abhorrent human. read more

This place is the bees knees! Hands down one of my favorite rice ball spots in LA county. I love that the menu is fairly large and recommend almost everything on it. The bulgogi and spicy shrimp rice balls are my favorites, but you can't go wrong with any of the other items. There are vegan/vegetarian options but not many. Pricing is decent, it's mid range compared to other places I've been to. Parking on the street is a bit of a pain, but I always end up finding a spot. I've ordered takeout here twice and was not disappointed. Both of my orders were ready earlier than the proposed time. The staff is friendly and the food is packed very well. Social distancing was enforced and PPE was worn by staff. I would give this place 10 stars if I could. If you want some amazing onigiri this is the place to go! Finally got to stop by while I was in the area the other day. Definitely a fan and will need to come back and try the other things on the menu. On this visit, I ordered the spicy pork and mushroom rice balls. They were freshly made and nice and warm when I got them. I had ordered them to-go and appreciated the fact that they packed the seaweed separately so that the seaweed wouldn't get too soggy. The rice was perfect, cooked just right. Not too tightly or loosely packed. The mushrooms and spicy pork were cooked well and seasoned well. The rice to filling ratio was great too. Gam Tu Bop is my go-to place in Glendale if I'm looking for a convenient, tasty meal and/or snack. Each onigiri (filled rice ball wrapped in seaweed) can range from ~$2.50 to ~$3.75. I would say it takes about 2.5 onigiris to make me full, so it's pretty good value. My favorites are their spicy shrimp, unagi, and beef onigiris. I don't really care for the curry chicken (it's kind of a weird taste to me). I might get flamed for this, but I really didn't like most of the onigiris I got when I was actually in Japan because the rice-to-filling ratio was always so off (LOTS OF RICE), but here, there's quite a bit of filling so it's flavorful throughout. Even if you're just passing by, do yourself a favor and pick up one (or multiple) of these! It's also really good to-go because they separate the seaweed for you so it doesn't get soggy. read more

We drove 1 hour bc we loved this place , we have a newborn so making that drive was hard we got there ordered our food to go and when we got home we opened our food just to realize that they gave us completely different things. They would not refund us even after telling them we couldn't go back since we have a newborn and we have to drive far. The customer service is horrible.
