We purchased a house in a neighborhood that was new to us. The wood floors needed some attention and we didn't have any experience repairing such flooring. Therefore we got three quotes, listened to the three companies and in this case selected Gama. We selected Gama because Uli had a different view about the flooring issue than the other companies, and his explanation was the most compelling to us. He was passionate about the flooring, the treatments and equipment he was going to use. Uli was giving the quote and assured us that he'd be leading the work (no pitch and switch!) and he was aggressive on the quote. In fact another supplier tried to discredit his quote because it was too cheap. Once we had decided the general treatment plan and had selected Uli he helped us think through the details of which finishing to use and how to manage some of the more worn areas. He knows a lot about flooring. The work was done beautifully but probably more importantly from a review point of view exactly in line with what Uli predicted. He was careful to set expectations about how certain areas would look after the treatment and in every case he over delivered. I read some reviews about Gama that spoke about poor communication. Our experience was the opposite. Uli arrived for the quote promptly, he was clear about when he could do the work, he followed through on that and during the work itself Uli sent us updates over Whatsapp. He left the house clean, secure and with a beautiful floor. We had c. 1500 sq ft of white oak sanded and recoated. The work involved negotiating a reasonably complicated set of custom kitchen legs and addressing wine and oil stains. On a referral I had Ulises come and do a quote to install hardwood flooring that I had already purchased. He came right away to do the bid and I was very happy with his quote. He even mentioned that in the future, don't buy the flooring until he quotes the project because he could probably by the flooring at a better price. So that was a good lesson for me! He was concerned about the flooring because I had it stored in the garage so he came back the net day and moved it into the house. Another lesson learned, don't store hardwoods on the cement floor in your garage. He came over a three day weekend and did the work. I had carpet scheduled and he wanted to get in before the carpet. So it all worked out well. Then he came back and did all of the beautiful trim once the carpet was laid. He did a creative transition around the fireplace that turned out really nice. We had used Gama on a smaller project and they did a good job. We recently contacted them for a much larger project. Ulises came out and provided a fair quote, and we agreed on a price and a start date. Ulises made another visit to our house to discuss the project and put sample colors on the floor so we could pick something we liked. A week before they were to start the job Ulises texted us he couldn't do our floors because he had taken other jobs out of the area. This was unprofessional and has delayed our project by several weeks. He has not returned calls or texts to explain why he bailed on us. One fellow wanted to frame my whole hallway because he was too lazy to take up the base boards... another wanted to charge us $800 extra dollars to move our pool table... from the moment that Ulysses entered the house he was jovial, professional and real!!! I had Ulysses out for a bid and he was very friendly and said he would be available during the timeframe I needed (third week in January). I was very happy with his price and called him within the week to confirm the bid and dates. He said he was still available and confirmed the price. The next day when I left him a message to send me a contract and that I wanted to move forward he did not return my call. I called him twice more, still no return call. Finally I texted him to see if he had received my call and to ask him to call me. He texted me back with "Yes (I did receive your call). I can not do your job. We have full schedule for next months, sorry." Again I asked him to call me, thinking he had me confused with some other job. He just texted again that he couldn't do the job. Eventually, I had to call him from a different number to even get him to answer my call. I asked him what happened and he just said, "I can't do your job we are busy for the next 2 months." I asked him how this happened when he had just told me he was available. He just said, "I can't do your job." I have never had anything like this happen before, there was no reason to explain his actions and I was left without a contractor because I had already told the other bidder that I wasn't going to use him. Timing was important on the job since I had to be out of the house for a week for the refinish and new flooring and I was very disappointed at how unprofessional and unresponsive Ulysses turned out to be. read more

A few years ago, based on Yelp reviews, we hired Ulysses and his brother to refinish two rooms' wood floors and install a matching wood floor in a room adjacent (in between) to these two rooms ...not only did they do an amazing job refinishing the wood floors we thought were toast, but the new floor matched perfectly. Now a couple years later the floors still look great and many guests have remarked how great they look and are amazed when we tell them one of the floors was put in 20 years after the other two. I am writing a review now because I saw their GAMA van in my neighborhood and I called Ulysses and asked him to come by if he had time to look at a small chip in one of the old floors where a sliver of wood is separating ...Ulysses came by with his brother, fixed it, and when I asked 'what do I owe you?' he said 'nothing', so I tried to give him a tip in gratitude, and he refused. I was so disappointed with Ulysses. After reading all these amazing reviews I gave him a call. He seemed so accommodating and professional and he gave me a great quote. I called him a couple of days later to give him the job, but I got no response. I made multiple phone calls and emails over the next few weeks, and then finally got him on the phone two months later. We agreed on a start date...I reconfirmed with him a week prior to the start date, explaining that I was purchasing plane tickets to New York so I would be out of the house for the refinishing part of the job. I bought the plane tickets, and we emptied the rooms of furniture (no small task). And then the morning of the start date -- no Ulysses. He finally returned my phone calls later that morning and said he couldn't get the wood from his supplier and would start the job in 3 weeks. Seriously? We are installing basic 2 1/4" white oak flooring; there is no way that this wood is not available in the entire Bay Area. I left a message, offering to pay more if necessary to use another supplier, but he never called back. Needless to say, 3 weeks later he didn't show up, either. But by then I had finally learned my lesson and had hired another contractor. read more
