The restaurant was small and packed with college kids, with a cute coffee shop vibe. Unfortunately the service was terribly slow, it took nearly 25 minutes for 3 sandwiches. Visited our daughter this past weekend and was finally able to pick up food from the deli. They were pretty busy, especially with Kenyon's Family Weekend. I assume this was a welcome change of pace for the business. Overall, the service was good. I don't want to knock them because of how busy the restaurant was. We ordered a grilled cheese on sourdough, a veggie build your own sandwich with pesto, and a chicken caprese sandwich. There were a couple of details that were missed with our order. My daughter ordered a grilled cheese on sourdough and received it on wheat bread. My sandwich was supposed to be prepared on toasted sourdough and the bread wasn't toasted. So by the time I made it to the football stadium, it was soggy. But these errors won't discourage me from returning, the next time I visit campus. read more

Gambier Deli is good considering where it's located. It's stuck in a small college town with little other dining options. The menu has lots of choices. It may change depending when classes are held. There's a few options for vegetarians too. It's located in Gambier where there aren't that many businesses. It's also heavily dependent on Kenyon College. When school is not in session it gets slow. It may run out of several items. That's to be expected because it gets dead around there and it isn't that busy to begin with. Be prepared to get substitutions since they'll probably be out of items. The Rosemary's Oil and Spice sandwich is good and it's not too pricey at about $5. I wanted the Yardley's Bundle of Joy but they had no hummus. They were also out of some of the breads which is annoying but there was not as much business. I would recommend visiting Gambier Deli if you're in town. It's one of the most popular businesses. The best time to go is when school is open so you get the best service. read more

Food is a 10/10. The lady in charge and usually at the front counter... more like a 0/10. She has been unnecessarily rude on MULTIPLE occasions now and my business has finally been lost. Basic questions are answered with rude, passive aggressive, and snarky comments. Today, I went in to the shop at 2:04pm. The sign on the front door says 8am-3pm, as well as their website and Facebook page. The older woman who is always rude and never accommodating, yelled multiple times in front of other customers who were still eating in the deli "we're closed, we're closed, we're closed." This is the 5th negative encounter I have had with this woman and I will not be returning. Rude and terrible customer service. read more

Food tastes ok, although they are stingy with the toppings. There is no way a veggie sandwich with a few spinach leaves and smattering of a couple other toppings should cost $5 or more. But the main problem here is the service and the lack of hygiene. I stopped going to the Gambier Deli because they are completely unsanitary in their handling of the food. I have yet to see an employee wash their hands or use gloves. Instead, the employees use their bare hands for EVERYthing, including dipping into the pickle dish for your dill spear. After a long absence, I decided to give it another try. Same cleanliness issues. The "sandwich lady" uses her bare hands to choose ingredients and assemble sandwiches, pack orders, etc. No washing at any time. To round it all out, the deli case looks FILTHY, with dried food splattered all over it. To add to my irritation today, the employees demonstrated no interest in customer service whatsoever. They acted confused when I asked questions, did not want to find the answer for me, and did not "know" anything. The cashier and the "barista" moved in frustratingly slow motion. I got a coffee that was just horrible. It was over priced and resembled a "praline and cream" latte not in the least. If there was flavored syrup in there it was in such miniscule quantity that it was undetectable. There was only a vague sweetness to it. Hopefully the fact that I got my sandwich grilled and gave my pickle to the dog has saved me from contracting food poisoning. This was the last straw-- I will not go back. read more

A nice little place in a very ordinary setting, that is it is wedged in between a great book store and a small market. Seating is limited and the menu is unnecessarilly fussy. Too many sandwiches with cutsey pie names, making figuring out what you want to order consume more time than neeced. It is saved by the fact that is on the campus of Kenyon College, one of the great small liberal arts colleges. Someone with a better sense of efficiency and logistics could make this a better experience for the patrons. Won't happen. read more

I had never been to Kenyon College and stopped at this deli for breakfast on my way out of town after visiting for Pelotonia. The bagel sandwich was excellent, everything was very fresh and simple. They even have gluten free bagels and bread! I had a toasted gluten free bagel with eggs and muenster cheese, and some crisp bacon on the side. I already had coffee from my hotel, but the drink specials sounded delicious too. They had a full selection of cafe choices for coffee lovers. Cute place! read more

If you don't have a family member attending (or thinking about attending) Kenyon College, you might not have occasion to travel through Gambier, OH. But if you are anywhere in the neighborhood, (i.e. within 20 miles) I'd encourage you to make the trip. We've eaten here a few times, and it's always good, but the breakfast the other day was just PERFECT. Maybe it was seeing our son again, maybe we were just famished, but the eggs and bacon were about the best I've tasted. And the toast is (I think) homemade bread. And the bacon! My husband and I spent our wedding night decades ago at the Pierre Hotel in NYC and the breakfast the next morning included the best bacon I've ever tasted in my life (again, timing is everything) and that's what the bacon at the Gambier Deli reminded me of. The owner takes your order with great gravitas, asking a lot of questions about how you want your food prepared, and the directness was a little startling, but he wants to make sure you get what you want. They have every possible inclusion for omelettes, and the coffee was outstanding--although the cups are somewhat small and you have to go back up to the counter to ask for a refill, which could be intimidating if there is a long line at the counter. I get it though--can you imagine how much free coffee would be consumed at a college campus? The food is a big cut above deli food--with gluten free options, interesting cheeses and an array of fine coffee choices, and after speaking with the owner for a bit, it's clear that this family business is a pride and joy--they go to food shows and really develop the menu way beyond 'ham and cheese on rye' with everything fresh, fresh, fresh. If it's a late Sunday or Saturday morning for you and you don't feel like seeing someone you got with the night before or eating the rubber I mean scrambled eggs in Peirce then the Deli is the perfect place to go. The breakfast is exceptional and the sandwiches are great as well. I would recommend getting a "blueberry for the grill" seeing as it is probably the most delicious thing in Knox county besides the crystal meth from mount Vernon. As someone who eats there three or four times a week, year round, I guess you could say the food is great. You can get anything from a variety of home-made bagels, sandwiches of every combination you can think of, soups, salads, cookies. Jeanne and Stu are excellent cooks, so you are guaranteed a quality meal, no matter what you order. It would be hard to pick a favorite for each category, but any of their creamy soups would be a palate pleaser, especially the mushroom or potato. The Italian deli sub (my normal sammy) is served on a fresh French roll and is so big that I can get two, if not three meals out of it. Aside from the deli, they also run a catering business. They provide quality food and if they say they'll be there or the food will be ready, it will be done. The tray of a mixed selection of deli sandwiches is *terrific* and you can get it for any size gathering you're interested in. Especially good is their red-skinned potato salad. The owners work there everyday behind the counter and they learn your name and what you order. Just when you think it can't get any better..... You taste the food ! You can create any sandwich you can think of or order from their gigantic menu named after family members and loyal customers. They skip no expense on ordering the most excellent ingredients from imports to local. I can't rave enough about it! They drive to Amish country weekly to pick up fresh baked bread!
