I took my car to Gann's Automotive, where the owner, Paul Gann, told me the engine had failed and that the car was unsafe to drive. He advised that I replace the engine immediately at a cost of over $5,000. He also told me the car was worth less than $2,000 and suggested I buy a new one. As a mom who had just been in a recent car accident, hearing that my car was "dangerous" was extremely stressful. I felt pressured and rushed into purchasing a new vehicle I hadn't planned on buying. Before selling my car, I decided to get a second opinion at CarMax. They found nothing wrong with the engine and ended up buying the car from me for $7,000. Being given incorrect information in that situation caused unnecessary stress and financial impact. I strongly recommend getting a second opinion before accepting major repair advice from this shop. I have both good positive and negative regarding Ganns Automotive. Paul and Brian and staff are very nice they recently fixed my Caravan window which would not open or close. We did buy a car from Ganns several years ago and they honored the warranty had to brig it back several times. Unfortunately, the most recent experience the gasket they fixed for the Caravan fell off. I brought it back and they put it back on. Ganns did my last oil change. I am at a different auto center today because check engine light came on and asked them to do oil change. Ganns did it way to tight, and also big oil leak end result needed new pan and what was going to be a $150 is now $500. I shared with Brian the head mechanic what happened and he said we fix oil pans all the time. The manager where I am at said that is all he had to hear if they fix oil pans all the time the mechanic is not doing them right. This was clearly Ganns fault and I didn't bring it back to them because I need the car today and usually 2-3 days for Ganns to repair your car if your lucky. The one other experience I will share is that one time Paul could not figure out why the car would not start. I didn't mind paying a normal diagnostic fee but he was charging like $140 and no repairs were done which I thought was excessive. I did complain and he more or less asked me to leave didn't pay anything and that was not my intention . The bottom like I am done going to Ganns if I need to drive to Lilburn so be it. read more

I found Gann's Automotive on Yelp and after calling around, I decided to give them a try. I spoke to Paul (the owner), told him what I heard and gave my own personal diagnosis ( thank goodness I'm not a mechanic..gotta learn to stay in my lane ). He was concerned and told me to be at his shop first thing the next morning. Left the car with him and he called me within an hour to tell me what the real issue was. Told me he could have the part within a few hours and I'd have my car back around lunchtime. He kept his word. He was honest, upfront and reasonable. My car now runs beautifully. For giggles, my husband called the dealership to get pricing for the same work and was quoted over 40% more and they would have my car for 2 days!!! It's hard to find an honest mechanic, so I challenge you to give Gann's a try. If I ever have any major issues in the future, I wouldn't think twice about using them. read more

Went to see how much a catalytic converter would be. They kept my car the whole day then call and tell me it was $3k. I went to pick up my car they wanted to charge me $100. Nothing was told before hand it would even charge. read more

I have been putting off for more than a year some generic maintenance that my car needed that I couldn't properly do myself - transmission service, coolant flush, thermostat replacement. All this just because of the simple reputation that all mechanics have - shady. I came across these guys and searched and searched (many times I may add) for a legit bad reason that would give me the "yep, typical shadiness" feeling, and I found zero. So I, still hesitant, brought my car in to have the services performed. My car is pretty generic, a compact sedan 4 cylinder, and anything like, belts, oil, plugs I'll do my self because it's easy and my time is free. So for the most part I know the costs of things and I had a figure in my head of what it this was going to cost. Three things stood out to me that eased my mind when they called me back with the estimate. First, I had them also check the brakes which I new were near end of life and they told me that while yes they were over the hump, I probably still had a few good months maybe a little more of useful life so they wouldn't recommend replacing quite yet. Honestly I was floored by this alone, as they could have just included this service and I wouldn't have questioned it AT ALL! Second, the quote for the remaining items was below what I was expecting so the deal was done. Third, not one additional item that I had not specified was listed as additional recommendation to be fixed. For most of you out there this might not stand out, but since I have 189,000 miles on mine, I feel certain I could have easily been convinced to fix some other unknown problem. I picked my car up the next day and it was running like new, not that it was running terrible to begin with, but I could tell that the transmission had actually been serviced as shifts were a tad bit tighter and the squeal from 2nd to 3rd was now gone. You couldn't ask for better service or better prices. Paul is fair and honest, and won't try to sell you anything you don't need. A tire place quoted $220 plus labor to replace rear shocks when I was getting new tires installed. Paul replaced the worn ones with premium shocks for a drive-out price of $188. He also spotted some other problems and told me how long I could wait before a repair would be mandatory, allowing me time to save up for that maintenance I you want to save money and have your car treated right, take your car to Gann's Automotive. I had my transmission rebuilt by these folks. Since then I have taken it back in for the transmission two times within a year and a half and it's still not running correctly. Each time they had my car, they kept it for about two weeks with almost no communication even while I called them nearly daily to find out when I'd get my car back. That's six weeks with no vehicle for me to get to work or for my wife to take my kids to the doctor. Now the first time I returned was within a year and covered under warranty. The second time was just outside the original warranty and Paul was kind enough to only charge me for parts, which was slightly above the nothing I feel I owe for a job that should have already been completed twice. When I spoke to him today, after the usual couple of weeks of trying to get in touch with him, he blamed Toyota for their transmission and me for not paying for the parts last time. He must have forgotten that while I didn't pay when I picked up the van I told Brian that I wanted to speak to Paul about what I owed. He never called. As usual. I personally feel that a man who stands behind his work as Paul does should not have to redo that work this many times, and if he does then I should definitely not be charged for it. Maybe I am out of line here, but either way I'll definitely be going elsewhere after this. Blaming Toyota seems like a cheap excuse for sending my family home in a van that dies on the side of the road every few months. I'll go ahead and say that he did every bit of work he says, and I have no doubts there. But I have a van that still doesn't run right and wallet 2400 dollars lighter to show for it. read more

I have gone to Gann's Automotive for about the last 20 years. (Once you find an honest, dependable mechanic, you tend to stay with him!!!!) Paul Gann is the owner---fair, extremely honest, and knowledgeable. Several times over the years I have gone to him, he has told me " You don't need this done--too expensive. I suggest this." His price is always 20-40% less than a dealer's price, and the repair is as good as, or better, than the dealer. He did two timing belts (at the recommended 90,000 mile intervals) on my Toyota van, and saved me hundreds each time. With Paul's help and regular oil changes I have over 300,000 miles on the van. The service sucked, they lied over and over again. I had to purchase a new car do to their lack of honesty. I was told by the owner that I would receive my money back, and that was another lie. BUYER BEWARE! A while back our truck blow a transmission hose and broke down in front of this shop. And, of course it happen to be the only shop open that late afternoon so we walked over to this shop. The owner seemed very nice and assured us he could help. A couple days later he called us and told us the truck was ready and told us that the repairs were minor and everything should be fine. We felt so relieved since he only charged us a couple hundred bucks. Our daughter was getting ready to leave for college this was a huge burden lifted for us because as you might guess our truck was out of warranty even though it was still a fairly new truck. We picked up and happily drove off but we didn't get more than 300 feet before the truck stopped running again. My husband had to get out of the truck and walked back over to Gann's auto repair shop to inform owner what just happened. He seemed surprised that our truck was not working. Needless to say, he took our truck back in for service and told us he will give a call as soon as he determine the problem. A few days later, he called us and told us we needed a new engine and that it would cost us roughly $3500 to $4000 plus but that he could it for about 2.5k. He appeared like he really wanted to help us. He even confided in us about his alleged harassment from his neighboring competitor auto repair shop and that he needed relocate his business. After a few rounds of phones calls about pricing he told us he found a used engine and told us he would need a deposit which we gave him. Please keep in mind he already charged us for the first repair but never mentioned anything about crediting that portion back. Once we gave him the deposit, he told us he would call us when the truck was ready. From what I can recall some time had passed before we heard from him. But when we did get a call, we were both out of town on business and preparing to drop off our Cadet at the US Military Academy. We when we finally got a chance to return his call we had to leave a message that we were still traveling but we would be there as soon as we can. About a week or so later, we went to pick up the vehicle and discovered he had indeed moved to a new garage. The first time we went to the new shop it was closed on a Friday. That following Monday, we went back to shop found him working in the garage. We told him that we was there to pick up our truck. He then began to act cold and accused us of abandoning our vehicle. At first we thought he was joking but then he further stated that he had filed legal action to take possession of our truck with the courts. And, in order to reclaim our truck we would need to go to the court house if we wanted to get it back. It eventually took two police officers, a tow truck and roughly an additional 2k in cash to reclaim our truck and the truck was still not a 100% fixed either.
