Good experience. I really like it. The meat was tasty. They did that well. I also think the meat flavor is tasty. I will definitely come back next time.

Late-night skewers with live music and pitchers of beer to end the night. One of the few restaurants that stays open until midnight, and they also have buy 1 get 1 free beer after 10 PM. It's been a minute since I ate here, and I actually think it tasted better this time. The big lamb skewer is my favorite. It has just the right amount of fat, and the meat is really tender. With the seasoning they use, it doesn't taste gamey. I really like the flavors of their skewers. It tastes pretty authentic to me, and I can always add extra spicy powder when I want more of a kick. Ordering was pretty easy and efficient too. We just scanned the QR code on the table and put in our order. Once we submitted it, the server came by to confirm everything. The food came out pretty quickly, so we didn't have to wait long.

Happy Hour menu was awesome and the skewers only cost $1 or $2 each. The flavor was decent, not too salty and not too spicy either but very flavorful. Service was quick as well and the server was very attentive

First time here, the server was incredibly sweet explaining both of Gaos Restaurant to ensure we were where we wanted to be. They have happy hour on lamb and beef skewers, so you know we had to try. Food came out quickly and meat was full of flavor and delicious. not to mention kids under 12 eat free and steam rice is complementary. Great place to try!

Came on a recommendation of a friend and was heavily craving lamb skewers. It was a busy Friday evening and we were put on a waitlist for a party of 4, but the wait was minimal. You order from your phone and a server will come to confirm once the order is sent in. Food comes out pretty quickly. They served plastic cups, utensils, and styrofoam bowls + plates. Big minus for me. They're quick to clean up and change the water pitcher. As for the food, my favorite dish was the king eggplant. It was nicely seasoned and heavy on the garlic, just the way I like it. The lamb skewers were decent, but lacked in comparison to other establishments. We also ordered grilled garlic skewers, but they were old and had sprouts growing out of them. Gao's is lively and has a great selection of a combination of pop and Kpop music. And there's a stage for karaoke, which we had the pleasure of having someone sing on stage during our visit. Overall, it was a decent visit, but Gao's wouldn't be the first place I would go to for skewers.

Lots of variety from vegan to proteins, and a total vibe with a DJ, beer tower, and cozy spaces. Not very big so it gets noisy.

More and more skewer places continue to open in Chinatown! With all this competition, Gao's continues to stands out. It is always filled with customers every time. Beware that there's a slight wait on the weekends, but it seems that they do their best to get you in as fast as possible. They have live music on the weekends and it is very lively. Bring a couple friends a sing some karaoke! Why does Gao's stand out? DAN DAN NOODLES. Point. Blank. Period. I get them every time. They're not the usual dan dan noodles at other Chinese restaurants. It's more like a cold noodle dish. It's refreshing yet nutty. I freaking love it. Add your meat of choice from the selection of skewers, and you got yourself a bún thịt nướng. There are many skewers to choose from. Whatever they recommend, just get. All the recommended dishes were pretty good. They also ask the spice level, I personally prefer medium. I would skip on the smashed cucumbers. I feel like they could've seasoned it better. I ended up using the dan dan noodles sauce to dip the cucumbers. Drinks here are cheap as well, so doing a pre-game here would be a good idea!

Menu from when it first opened

I was hungry and tired last night after work. Being the first day of the end of Microsoft Windows 10's life, my eyes were crossed and felt hangry. I just wanted to get a quick bite or a cold drink. I decided to come to Gao's Kabab for a midnight snack. When I arrived, the music from the karaoke machine was so loud. But my tummy said just sit down and ignore it. Throughout the night, it felt like one person sang the same song over and over. That means I was not paying attention to those Chinese songs. Waiter asked when I was here before. I was here when it first opened 7 years ago. He said the prices are still the same. Oh? Not according to my old photos. Everything went up by up to double. I ordered my usual comfort food, malatang 麻辣烫. The picture looked so good. Full of stuff. In reality, it came out with a big flow of hot grease on top and barely anything under that worth mentioning. The only protein was the pork blood pudding 猪血. It took about 20 minutes and it felt like an hour because I had to endure the loud music. This Gao's restaurant serves grilled skewers and the sit down restaurant dishes. The other Gao's serves seafood. I chose this one because of non-seafood choice. The clientele was so young and like at my son's age. Damn I'm old.

I love the vibe of this place! It's like a small Chinese version of a izakaya/tapas place that's bustling. Friday evenings they have someone on stage singing for most of the night which I really enjoyed. The grilled skewers are great here but the best ones in my group's opinion are the Grilled Pork and the Grilled Small Lamb /w fat skewers. Delicious, and everything here goes well when hanging out with friends catching up or just having a great time. We also tried their: Fried Enoki Fried Tofu Skin Big & Small Beef /w fat Corn Skewer Grilled cauliflower 3L Beer tower and Soju bottles I would say all of them were quite delicious. It's easy to rack up a high bill here since you're paying per skewer. The one most unworth it was definitely the grilled cauliflower. You get a 2 pieces and one skewer for $2. If it was perhaps two skewers it would have been a little more worth. Service is pretty quick and friendly despite how busy the place is on a Friday evening. Orders may take 10-20 minutes depending on how busy their kitchen is. A bit pricy for what it is but overall I really enjoyed this place and would recommend and come back!

    BBQ Small Beef Skewers

This was a new experience for my husband and I. The place is dark, quiet, and intimate. It does appear that they do karaoke nights, though, because we noticed the stage. The restaurant's food had a street vibe feel, so that was neat. The meats are on skewers and even when we ordered fish, it was placed on a slab in front of us instead of on a large plate. It was a different and fun way of eating food, which we enjoyed. When we sat down, we were given complimentary edamame and sunflower seeds. They don't have physical menus; you have to scan a QR code and you can place everything you want on your phone. Once your order is placed, a waiter/waitress will come by to confirm your order. I don't know if it was a special or if it is something they always offer, but we got free kids meals! That was a nice surprise because we had our two boys with us. The staff and owner were really friendly and sweet. The price is a little steep and ran easily rack up. We ordered: Chicken Skewers - This was our favorite! I highly recommend this! BBQ Small Beef Skewers - We thought this was okay Small Lamb w/ Fat - My husband that it was okay. I don't like lamb in general, so I can't judge. Grilled Tilapia w/ Garlic Sauce - I liked this! It was crispy and I liked the garlic seasoning. It really is loaded with garlic. So if you're not a fan, this may not be for you. It is a whole fish, bone and all, so you kind of have to work for your food here. haha Yong Chou Fried Rice - This was good. It was flavorful and has a homey feel to it. Before tax, everything was $47.50. After our meal, my husband and I were still hungry. The kids meals came in clutch and definitely helped us feed everyone. My husband and I actually ate the boys' leftovers and felt more satisfied afterwards. Overall, we enjoyed the environment and experience that this place had to offer. This place is great for a late night friends hang out.

The BBQ was absolutely delicious--perfectly grilled, flavorful, and juicy. Definitely a great spot for BBQ, and we'll be coming back again!

5 Stars - Authentic Szechuan that absolutely nails the classics…read more During our short trip to Houston, as a custom, we were determined to find real Szechuan food, and luckily we found Hu's Kitchen. The location is a bit unassuming, and parking is definitely tough (the spaces are very shallow), but the second we walked through the doors and smelled the Szechuan peppercorns, I knew we were in exactly the right place. I generally judge a Szechuan restaurant by their 夫妻肺片 (Fuqi Feipian)--which they cleverly name "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" on the menu. They completely nailed it. The beef, tripe, and tendon were incredibly cohesive together, yet you could tell each component was prepared and marinated in a slightly different way to perfectly highlight its specific texture. The chili oil was right on the spot. We went through a massive bowl of rice just eating this dish alone. Honestly, if I weren't feeding a family of four, I could have just ordered that and been perfectly happy. While the Fuqi Feipian proves their skill with dry dishes, the 水煮魚片 (Fish in Szechuan Hot Chili Oil) proves their skill with wet ones. It's another must-order. The execution was flawless--we didn't just finish the tender fish chunks, we ate every last piece of cabbage soaked in that incredible chili broth. For my two daughters who can't handle the heat, we ordered the fried rice, garlic pork ribs with onion, and the 紅燒獅子頭 (Giant Meatball with Cabbage). The giant meatball was spectacular. The kids completely devoured it on their own, but I managed to steal a bite, and it instantly brought back childhood memories of exactly how this dish is supposed to taste. We also had the Dan Dan Noodles, which were great and rounded out the meal perfectly. I loved all of the dishes we tried. Should we ever find ourselves in Houston again, we will absolutely be revisiting this hidden gem.

No complaints here since we were starving from an 8 hour road trip. The Dan Dan Noodles...I had high expectations but sadly this dish fell short. I recommend Hu's Cooking to use a bigger bowl and more sauce because it was difficult to mix the noodles and the sauce wasn't...saucing, unfortunately. I wish there was more flavor in this dish. The Scallion Pancake was super over-fried and oily. See image in my review. The outer parts of the pancake were fried to a crisp and only a small circumference in the center stayed chewy. I know Chinese tends to be oily but this pancake soaked up way too much oil. Half a Peking duck: super great price for so much meat. The difficulty when eating this dish is gnawing the meat off the sharp bones of the duck. Mapo Tofu with white rice: pretty easy staple, no complaints here. Dinner on a Saturday was packed but we got seated quickly and food arrived fast.

Also weird how they don't have any drinks on the menu or let you know about options. Could I have asked for something else? Sure but again waitresses were just all over the place it was crazy. When we ordered and others food was coming out we realized what big portions they give you. BTW just 'cus it's big portions doesn't mean This food is about to be the best Ive ever had. The food- We got some shrimp plate and we were told it was spicy because it has peppers and peppercorns which would numb your tongue which it was just basic shrimp dish. Only good or cool part of it was eating lotus root which Ive never had before. We also ordered the "special" house beef noodles and I don't see the hype or why they're so special. The only crazy part was the noodles length. Which honestly made it hard to eat. We ordered the duck which came with the soup. The soup was made from scraps. I think if they had added more duck and not just scraps it would be my fav thing of everything we ordered. Will say it tasted like chicken soup. For the duck. It wasn't as crispy as people made it seem to be. I expect idk a more gamey flavor to it and all I kept saying is-This taste like pork carnitas. Idk why we got treated than the table behind us. We asked for to go just like they do but they just gave them their to-go plates like Here ya go and they put all of our food in our to-go for us. Would I go back? Lucky for me, they have their own parking lot, which already made everything super convenient. I walked in around 1:30 PM and was back out by 1:55 PM, so the service is definitely fast and friendly; perfect for a lunch break. The lunch menu has a huge variety of options, and every plate comes with fried rice and a pretty big egg roll. I honestly didn't know what to expect, but the quality of the food was fantastic. I can totally see how they've stayed open for 50+ years. I ordered the beef and broccoli... which honestly should be renamed to beef and vegetables, because it came with broccoli, carrots, and onions. Not complaining, though! The beef was tender and kind of reminded me of a beef fajita texture with how flakey and tender it was. The sauce was savory with garlic and soy sauce flavors and I really liked it. The veggies were cooked perfectly for my taste: still a little crunchy and not soggy. My only complaint was the onion. They were a bit too crunchy and raw, which made them super spicy and pungent, so I just moved them to the side. The egg roll was good, too! It tasted freshly made with cabbage that still had some crunch, which I love. Portion-wise, it was absolutely perfect. I finished everything except the onions and left feeling satisfied. Not heavy and not carrying leftovers, which I appreciate because some Chinese spots over serve. I paid about $20 including tip. Overall, I would 100% recommend this place and would definitely come back for lunch again.

As soon as you get in they give everyone a water and a carafe of more water. There is a QR code to order and you place your order on the phone. The order goes straight to the kitchen and you can add as you go if wanted. I always thought that was pretty cool. The owner came out to say hello and ask how everything is. She even brought out a small bowl of soup for my baby to enjoy. The waitress was also very sweet and attentive. I don't live close by but will make the trip when the craving hits. Today was one of those days. The last time I was here there was no ac and not enough seating. This time it was nice and cool in and well as having new seating! My favorite dish was surprising the fried rice, with generous portions and slight smokiness. The xiaolongbao weren't my favorite, as there wasn't a whole lot of juice; but hey if you're looking to be health conscious maybe that is a positive.

Today was my lucky day because there was plenty of parking spots and seats (although the parking lot is very small). This place is great! I understand the hype for sure. When you walk inside it's just about the smallest restraunt I've ever. Very cozy and cute vibe with smooth jazz playing on a speaker and we got our food very fast. I really enjoyed my time here. Dry Fried Green Beans 5/5- these are the best green beans I have had in my life! I am not exaggerating like I will be thinking about these green beans all week. Do not hesitate to try these. Perfectly salty and good amount of crunch still left. The flavors they used are just perfect. Colorful Beef 4/5- The texture of the beef was so tender and not chewy at all like other places. The flavor was bright and the bell peppers were cooked through well. The issue I had with this dish was the sichuan peppercorns. I was just eating and not really looking at it super closely so I got a mouth full of these peppercorns and wow it was actually horrible. Just beware because the texture of these things are god awful and I think that they should be taken out like how a bay leaf is removed before serving. It was just really intense and it almost ruined the dish for me honestly. Other than that a great dish. My mouth was so numb but worth it. Dandan noodles 2/5- This was my first time trying this dish anywhere and I did not really enjoy it at all. The sesame flavor was really strong and it wasn't really salted at all. Very strange flavor. I will not order this again, however I do believe that the execution on this dish is great. There was a lot of sauce and the noodles were cooked well. I just really wish I liked the flavor of this dish and that's a personal problem. This dish also made my mouth numb but the flavor did not make it worth it. I wanted to like these so badly but I just couldn't do it. I will be back!

We ordered quite a bit of food, and everything came out quickly. The staff were attentive and friendly, and overall, the food was decent. My favorite dish was the Chicken Steamed Dumplings. I usually prefer pork dumplings, but these were surprisingly tasty. The wrappers were on the thicker side, which I personally enjoy, the filling was moist, and the sauce was packed with flavor. I also ordered the Beef Noodle Soup. The portion of noodles and beef was generous, but I thought the broth lacked depth and had far too much chili oil. Instead of providing a pleasant spice, the excess oil left a greasy coating in my throat that actually made me cough. The other dishes were less impressive. The Pork Bao tasted like they had been frozen and reheated, with slightly soggy, overcooked buns and a filling that lacked flavor. The Egg Rolls were also extremely small and had that same frozen, store-bought quality. Overall, the service was great and there were a few solid dishes, especially the chicken dumplings, but too many of the items tasted like frozen or pre-prepared food. I would come back for the dumplings, but I would probably skip most of the other dishes.

We were seated towards the back of the restaurant and it was uncomfortably warm. I don't remember our server's name but she was nice. I started with a Lychee Martini. It was very good and very strong. For apps we ordered the Scallion Pancakes and the BBQ Pork Buns. The Scallion Pancakes were very good, but once they cooled down, it didn't taste nearly as good. I enjoyed the BBQ Pork Buns too. For entrées I had the Salt Pepper Fish Slices while my friend went with the Ingenious Fried Beef. The Fish Slices were very seasoned and flavorful, but a bit dry. The batter was good and I really enjoyed the peppers and onions that accompanied the dish. I think a dipping sauce would have helped. My friend enjoyed the Fried Beef. They have quite a few locations around town if you don't want to venture into the downtown area. If you're near the Theater District, Cooking Girl is a great dining option.
