Came on a recommendation of a friend and was heavily craving lamb skewers. It was a busy Friday evening and we were put on a waitlist for a party of 4, but the wait was minimal. You order from your phone and a server will come to confirm once the order is sent in. Food comes out pretty quickly. They served plastic cups, utensils, and styrofoam bowls + plates. Big minus for me. They're quick to clean up and change the water pitcher. As for the food, my favorite dish was the king eggplant. It was nicely seasoned and heavy on the garlic, just the way I like it. The lamb skewers were decent, but lacked in comparison to other establishments. We also ordered grilled garlic skewers, but they were old and had sprouts growing out of them. Gao's is lively and has a great selection of a combination of pop and Kpop music. And there's a stage for karaoke, which we had the pleasure of having someone sing on stage during our visit. Overall, it was a decent visit, but Gao's wouldn't be the first place I would go to for skewers.

I was hungry and tired last night after work. Being the first day of the end of Microsoft Windows 10's life, my eyes were crossed and felt hangry. I just wanted to get a quick bite or a cold drink. I decided to come to Gao's Kabab for a midnight snack. When I arrived, the music from the karaoke machine was so loud. But my tummy said just sit down and ignore it. Throughout the night, it felt like one person sang the same song over and over. That means I was not paying attention to those Chinese songs. Waiter asked when I was here before. I was here when it first opened 7 years ago. He said the prices are still the same. Oh? Not according to my old photos. Everything went up by up to double. I ordered my usual comfort food, malatang 麻辣烫. The picture looked so good. Full of stuff. In reality, it came out with a big flow of hot grease on top and barely anything under that worth mentioning. The only protein was the pork blood pudding 猪血. It took about 20 minutes and it felt like an hour because I had to endure the loud music. This Gao's restaurant serves grilled skewers and the sit down restaurant dishes. The other Gao's serves seafood. I chose this one because of non-seafood choice. The clientele was so young and like at my son's age. Damn I'm old.

More and more skewer places continue to open in Chinatown! With all this competition, Gao's continues to stands out. It is always filled with customers every time. Beware that there's a slight wait on the weekends, but it seems that they do their best to get you in as fast as possible. They have live music on the weekends and it is very lively. Bring a couple friends a sing some karaoke! Why does Gao's stand out? DAN DAN NOODLES. Point. Blank. Period. I get them every time. They're not the usual dan dan noodles at other Chinese restaurants. It's more like a cold noodle dish. It's refreshing yet nutty. I freaking love it. Add your meat of choice from the selection of skewers, and you got yourself a bún thịt nướng. There are many skewers to choose from. Whatever they recommend, just get. All the recommended dishes were pretty good. They also ask the spice level, I personally prefer medium. I would skip on the smashed cucumbers. I feel like they could've seasoned it better. I ended up using the dan dan noodles sauce to dip the cucumbers. Drinks here are cheap as well, so doing a pre-game here would be a good idea!

I love the vibe of this place! It's like a small Chinese version of a izakaya/tapas place that's bustling. Friday evenings they have someone on stage singing for most of the night which I really enjoyed. The grilled skewers are great here but the best ones in my group's opinion are the Grilled Pork and the Grilled Small Lamb /w fat skewers. Delicious, and everything here goes well when hanging out with friends catching up or just having a great time. We also tried their: Fried Enoki Fried Tofu Skin Big & Small Beef /w fat Corn Skewer Grilled cauliflower 3L Beer tower and Soju bottles I would say all of them were quite delicious. It's easy to rack up a high bill here since you're paying per skewer. The one most unworth it was definitely the grilled cauliflower. You get a 2 pieces and one skewer for $2. If it was perhaps two skewers it would have been a little more worth. Service is pretty quick and friendly despite how busy the place is on a Friday evening. Orders may take 10-20 minutes depending on how busy their kitchen is. A bit pricy for what it is but overall I really enjoyed this place and would recommend and come back!

This was a new experience for my husband and I. The place is dark, quiet, and intimate. It does appear that they do karaoke nights, though, because we noticed the stage. The restaurant's food had a street vibe feel, so that was neat. The meats are on skewers and even when we ordered fish, it was placed on a slab in front of us instead of on a large plate. It was a different and fun way of eating food, which we enjoyed. When we sat down, we were given complimentary edamame and sunflower seeds. They don't have physical menus; you have to scan a QR code and you can place everything you want on your phone. Once your order is placed, a waiter/waitress will come by to confirm your order. I don't know if it was a special or if it is something they always offer, but we got free kids meals! That was a nice surprise because we had our two boys with us. The staff and owner were really friendly and sweet. The price is a little steep and ran easily rack up. We ordered: Chicken Skewers - This was our favorite! I highly recommend this! BBQ Small Beef Skewers - We thought this was okay Small Lamb w/ Fat - My husband that it was okay. I don't like lamb in general, so I can't judge. Grilled Tilapia w/ Garlic Sauce - I liked this! It was crispy and I liked the garlic seasoning. It really is loaded with garlic. So if you're not a fan, this may not be for you. It is a whole fish, bone and all, so you kind of have to work for your food here. haha Yong Chou Fried Rice - This was good. It was flavorful and has a homey feel to it. Before tax, everything was $47.50. After our meal, my husband and I were still hungry. The kids meals came in clutch and definitely helped us feed everyone. My husband and I actually ate the boys' leftovers and felt more satisfied afterwards. Overall, we enjoyed the environment and experience that this place had to offer. This place is great for a late night friends hang out.

I have been to many chinese skewers in the bay area and in houston and by far Gao's kabob is my favorite. The regular spicy seasoning is perfect for me. I love both the big and small beef and lamb skewers. They were so succulent and tender. I especially enjoy the bigger skewers because they had more fat in it, which makes it more juicy. I also recommend the garlic eggplant, which is out of this world! The staff was friendly and attentive. Always replacing water bottle before it is even empty and did it many times without even asking. The staff also changed my plate and removed the skewers quite often. *When i was leaving and walking out the door, the female waitress ran in front of me to open the door as i exit! Wow!* Superb customer service. The interior is well lit so you can see all the delicious skeweres that you have ordered. There is a karoke machine that you can sing if you are brave enough to show your skills. If you are craving chinese skewers and are in the immediate area, definitely go to Gao's. Gao's is way better than Friendship bbq that is across the street, which serves the same type of food. read more

The 5 star is solely for the food and one kind waiter or cook not sure who he is. The waitress didn't want to help! Seems no phone connection inside the restaurant and even connected to their WiFi the website wouldn't load. I wanted to order so much and ended up being restricted with only one page loading! You have to order on their website which is super frustrating when your phone isn't working! For a moment I wanted to get up and leave! And I am glad I didn't! Whatever we managed to order was beyond delicious! I had a flight to catch that day otherwise believe it or not I would have fought with that website to order more! While dining I kept on wanting more of the spices they have on the meat. One sweet waiter or chef passing by went to the kitchen and got me some in a little container to go. I thought that was super sweet compared to the treatment we have gotten from our waitress I would drive from San Antonio to Houston just to eat at that restaurant again! We found this place on Instagram and decided to check it out. Upon entering we were greeted and seated. The seating is slightly cramped, but not so that you cant function at your table. I think its more of a community style seating because the space is small. To touch on the spacing. My fiancee and I played a card game that asks questions and didn't feel like it was an intrusion of our gsme based on the closeness. The server Jason I believe his name, was friendly and explained how to order and showed us a point membership system as well that if we come back we can use the points we earned. We ordered a bunch of things. I'll start with drinks first. We ordered the juice boxes with the jack daniels bottle on top. I was hesitant, but it was pretty darn good. It was sweet, but watch out how the alcohol pours out because it can get a bit heavy as you drink they juice(shake up the box). We also ordered strawberry and grape soju. Both were really good. As far as water, they give you a carafe for your table and fill it as soon as it starts to get low. Now for the food. We order a bunch of things. The lamb with fat and big lamb were first. I love a little fat so that was really really good to me. The big lamb was as well. They season the food pretty good. There's three levels to the seasoning regulator, medium, and hot. We tried regular and medium. Neither were unbearably spicy. Then we ordered the egg noodles and corn as sides. The egg noodles were FIRE. Not heat wise, but flavor wise. I wanted to be greedy and order another plate of noodles even though I was full. The corn was great too. From there we ordered the beef skewers with fat and regular big beef skewers. We ordered the bbq oysters which were really really good and garlicky. We ordered the mushroom wrapped in bacon which I enjoyed because I like mushrooms. We ordered a second round of big lamb and beef with fat. For dessert we ordered the the little fried balls. I cant remember the name, but they were like big donut holes. We left full and happy. If you're looking for Chinese skewers, you have to try this place out! The lamb, beef, squid, and kimchi fried rice are must haves. They even have items like intestine or silkworm if you're into that! Everything is reasonably priced and taste great. Service is top notch, we ordered everything off a tablet, and the servers came around multiple times to top off our water and provide more plates and utensils. The restaurant is nice and cozy, with a stage for anyone brave enough to sing public karaoke. Being a Chinese restaurant, they play Chinese songs all night! read more

I love this place! The standout dishes are the Dan Dan noodles and the King Eggplant. The sauce for the noodles is so addicting and nutty and I like to save it to eat with other items on the menu. The king eggplant is huge and has a nice barbecue flavored seasoning. All the beef, pork, and chicken kabobs are good... You can't go wrong with any of them. They all have a good amount of meat and fat. I will say though... I would not recommend this place if you do not like cumin. It is present in almost every skewer. I personally love cumin so that's why I am such a big fan of their food... they also have live karaoke which I have definitely taken advantage of! Great place to hang out with friends late at night. read more

The seating is a bit crowded, with tables placed very close to the neighbors. The BBQ food leans towards a sweeter flavor profile, which isn't to my taste. However, the atmosphere improves significantly once the singer starts performing. On the plus side, the food is served quickly after placing the order. read more

Got lamb, beef, and chicken kabobs! They have happy hour 4-6pm for $1 lamb kabobs and they're really good! However, they all have the same spice and taste. The abalone wasn't worth it because they are very small. There are complimentary edamame, peanuts, and sunflower seeds on the paper plates. You may order everything from your phone by scanning the QR code at the table. There's also a karaoke stage where you can sing if you want. read more

Everytimr I am in Houston, Lao GAO BBQ place is my to go. as usual I ordered my favorites lamb, beef, potatoe, squid, pork belly and intestine skewers to go To my dismay all of them turn out to be with no seasoning and not 'BBQ'ed. all of the meat are not charred and tasted like boiled. I had such high hopes for this place!! Don't get me wrong, the food is good. But the service severely lacks with a huge language barrier. I thought it was really cool that the menu was on a tablet that stayed at the table so you can continue adding to your order if you'd like. It wasn't until I saw a server place a pitcher of water on another table, that I realized we did not receive the same service. The establishment is on the smaller side so it fills up pretty quickly and gets a little loud between the chatter and bumping music. Definitely worth a visit just for the experience. read more

If you're looking for mouthwatering, authentic Chinese barbecue, Lao Gao is the place to be. Every bite took me right back to the bustling night markets of China--flavorful, smoky, and perfectly seasoned. The meat was so tender and fresh, it practically melted in my mouth. Love coming here for the $1 lamb skewer special. I think it's become a weekly staple for us. For those with kids, I think their best kept secret is that they provide free kids meals as well, which includes fries, chicken tenders, orange slices and a small yogurt drink. So if your kids aren't adventurous enough for skewers or can't handle the spice, the kid's meal option provides the perfect compromise. The flavors were on point - but the dish was pretty small, and that I have a problem with. If a rice dish is $17 before tax, at least make it sizable. 4/5 due one point being docked for portion size. Khinkali: Really wanted to like this but at $17 for 4 dumplings, they needed to be phenomenal - and they didn't deliver. I like that they handmake it at the restaurant. I don't like that it was SO oversalted. So. Salty. And parts of the dough were undercooked. 2/5 Borscht: I added the borscht because a) I love borscht but more because b) the khinkali was so salty (have I said that yet?) and I was looking for something to balance it out. The front of the building had a sign saying they are the oldest Persian grill in Texas...established in 1986. Located within a bustling shopping center, this restaurant is unfortunately marred by numerous potholes in the parking lot, which could be off-putting to some diners. Upon entering, the restaurant feels small and cramped, with dim lighting that adds to the overall discomfort. A karaoke machine and stage were set up, and we were "fortunate" enough to be serenaded throughout our meal by a group of teenagers, which may not be ideal for all guests. The layout of the menu and the overall dining experience left much to be desired. The options were somewhat confusing, and what made matters worse was that neither the host who seated us nor the waiter offered any explanation or guidance. While the skewers we ordered were tasty, they were overwhelmingly spicy, which could be off-putting for those with a lower tolerance for heat. Unfortunately, the scallops and oysters were underwhelming, and we left most of them untouched. As for the crawfish, which we ordered from their sister restaurant, it was so disappointing that we couldn't bring ourselves to eat it and had it removed from the bill. To make matters worse, we were only informed at the end of our meal that we could have customized the spice level of our dishes, or even chosen non-spicy options. This lack of communication significantly impacted our dining experience. Overall, our visit was underwhelming. While the skewers were enjoyable, the lack of clarity regarding menu options, poor communication, and overall atmosphere made the experience less than ideal. I may consider returning for the skewers alone, but I would be sure to request the non-spicy option next time. read more

The customer service was abysmal; the staff seemed more interested in chatting amongst themselves than attending to the customers. It felt like we were invisible! To make matters worse, the bathroom was a horror show. The stench of vomit was overpowering, making it nearly impossible to use the facilities without gagging. It was a nauseating experience that left me questioning the overall hygiene standards of the establishment. Now, let's talk about the food. Not only was it overpriced, but the portions were laughably small. I left the restaurant feeling hungrier than when I arrived. It's astonishing how they can charge such exorbitant prices for portions that wouldn't satisfy a bird. I was really excited to try Gao's Kabobs after seeing so many good recommendations on social media, but I left feeling a bit disappointed. The dining area is fairly tight, with tables placed close together, but luckily I went on a weekday which meant it wasn't too crowded. I did appreciate that each table had a QR code for ordering and paying directly from the website. It made the experience convenient and allowed us to order at our own pace. The menu offers a wide variety of skewers and other dishes, but many of the skewers tasted very similar to each other. I also tried the Grilled Shelled Scallop with Garlic, which unfortunately was overpowered by garlic and didn't have much of a seafood flavor. With all the hype, I truly wanted to love the experience, but I think my expectations may have been set too high. However, I'm still open to returning and exploring more of the menu. Excellent crawfish. It is extra spicy and makes you mouth and head tingle. Oysters are excellent here. They put lots of garlic and on the oysters. They stay open late. read more
