I was in the area visiting one of my closest friends and she happened to live nearby to Garcias Fruits and she was telling me about their yummy selection of flavored ice and chamango so we took a mini field trip to get some sweets. Ditching where we need to be for desserts -- that is our usually M.O. for over a decade now!! No surprise :) My friends both got a medium chamango ($6/each) in which it was layers with diced mangos on the bottom and the top of the dessert and in the center they were able to choose a few flavors of fruit ice. Personally I'm not the greatest fan of mango so I just got a small diablitos ($5.50) where the edge of the cup was smeared with the Mexican candy and I was able to pick 4 scoops of fruit ice. I picked watermelon, strawberry, lime and more watermelon. The sweetness of the fruit ice went perfectly with the super sour and slightly spicy Mexican candy flavors. All three of our tasty desserts came with a straw covered in Mexican candy. Yummmy!! I love it so much I will probably see my friend more often just to get some diablitos. Just kidding... Hello chamango, it was such as pleasure to meet you and eat you. My friend and I shared the medium size ($6-so prices went up?) but it was more than enough for both of us and next time, small would do. For the sorbet we got pineapple and mango flavors and it comes with lime juice, mangos, and chamoy sauce. After eating off the top mangoes, my friend mixed it like a beast and then it tasted REALLLLY bombdigs since only then can you taste the lime juice and everything else. Make sure you mix well, or go with someone who's done it before because it well definitely make a hot mess. The tamarind stick was a nice touch but it was too much-I couldn't eat more than a little bit. Parking is quick and easy since it's in a plaza, and I fortunately didn't have to deal with lines but maybe 10 minutes after I received my order, the tiny place got pretty packed so make sure you go when you have some time to spare since it seems like random rush times. read more

The small shop is located inside a strip lot on Adelia and Garvey Ave. It offers ice cream, corn elote, agua frescas, raspados, and other Mexican fruit snacks, but they're popularly known for their chamango. Luckily, I arrived before the place got crowded and there were no lines. I ordered a large Chamango for $7 (other sizes med $6 and small $5). It was made of cut up pieces of mangos, chamoy chile sauce, ice cream sorbets and tamarind candy stick. A choice of four different flavored sorbet came with the large size. I went with the mango, lime, watermelon and pineapple. The combination of sweet-tart mango paired with luscious tropical flavored sorbets and salty/sweet taste of the chamoy and tamarind were delightful. Quite complex for newbies. As a Filipino, I grew up eating mangos and tamarind so I'm quite familiar with the taste and flavor. Plus my love for spicy foods made it more enjoyable to eat. It tastes like an icy cold lucas drink-- which would be PERFECT for summer! I later found out they had ELOTES! Growing up in LA, I use to get my chili and lime fix at the ice cream truck but never had I tried it mixed with mangoes and sorbet. My dear friend raved about this place, saying that no other place beats their Chamango concoction. First off, what the heck is Chamango? It's a combination of chamoy and mango! Duh! The drink was similar to a smoothie that contained bite-sized pieces of mango on the bottom of the to-go plastic cup with a drizzle of chili pepper and chamoy. I chose mango as my sorbet but there's plenty of other tarty sorbets to choose from. Since this was my very time, I wanted to stick with something I'm familiar with so I decided to make a safe choice and go with the mango sorbet. Once the sorbet gets scooped in, comes more chamoy drizzled on top with another layer of amazing fresh mango pieces. They finish it off with some lemon squirts and a wide straw. The straw was super interesting as it was covered in tamarind candy. I ordered the medium size for $6 but thought it was a tad too much for me to handle. This is definitely not a thirst-quenching smoothie like you would get at Jamba Juice. It's more of a heavy dessert to have after a meal and its primary focus of this drink was the chamoy. After a while, the chamoy was getting to me and it just felt a little too heavy for me that I couldn't finish it all in one sitting. I had to put it away in the freezer and come back to it. Recommendations: If you're a fanatic about chamoy, then go ahead and order a large. But if you're here for the first time and just want to experience this mixture of sorbet and chamoy...then a small size is plenty. Also, the venue is really small and humid. The Chamango comes with freshly cut pieces of mango, your choice of any flavored ice, and a tamarindo chile candy straw (tamarind - a sweet and sour flavored, chili candy covered straw). The pieces of mango are covered in chamoy (a liquid condiment that combines salty, sweet, sour, and spice from chili's). The Mangoneada is basically the same as the Chamango minus the pieces of fresh mango. Service: The wait time for your order varies on the amount of customers in front of you. If the shop is empty, you'll be helped right away. If it is packed, expect about a 20-30 minute wait for your order, again, depending on the amount of people ahead of you and the things they ordered. It isn't too bad where it makes you want to leave, but just be patient, they will get to you. Don't expect to be greeted nicely the way you would at another ice cream parlor/shop. The people working behind the counter are not the nicest, I'll admit, at times they may have an attitude or seem annoyed, but the ice really makes you forget about it. The two main girls in the front are really rude and disrespectful to their customers. My last experience was the worst by far, i had waited almost 40 mins in line. The store is in a small plaza right next to Mr. Baguette. It's pretty small, and many items on the signs are in Spanish, so you definitely need to be familiar with what items you want beforehand and what they are. We got the large chamango, which is $7 and comes with mangos on the bottom, five flavors of sorbet in the middle, and topped with more mangos. We got watermelon, guava, pineapple, strawberry, and mango. I was initially apprehensive about how these flavors would affect my chamango, but it was surprisingly really good together. The sorbet tastes so fresh and they mix well together. The chamango is really good, and even my sister, who normally dislikes the chamango from the other place, likes this one.
