    Garcia's queso

Comfortable restaurant good for families, groups and solo diners. The wait staff were charming and friendly. I ordered Garcia's queso and the vegetable quesadillas both of which were tasty. The queso had a nice heat but it was a little salty. The vegetable quesadillas were out of this world. I highly recommend them. The table service salsa was not remarkable, but the light crispy chips were great.

Cake by after a LONG day at the courthouse. This place is literally around the block. Place had plenty of seating, open, clean & inviting. Plenty of parking and outside seating too. Abby was our server. Friendly and efficient. Was told by my friends that I had to have their sweet tea- it didn't disappoint. Chips and red salsa brought to the table to start. Chips were warm and fresh. Food ordered and received in about ten minutes. Two people had tortilla soup combo-yummy reviews, one had beef fajita nachos & I ordered cheese enchiladas with enchilada gravy. Tasted the beef nachos, which were about 8 nachos constructed for you with beans, pico, beef fajita & white cheese (they do have another nacho option that's just a pile of chips with toppings). They were yummy!! Asked for hotter salsa & got salsa verde. It was good!! A spice level up from red salsa & tasty! Cheese enchiladas were gooey and cheesy goodness! Rice and beans were good too. Overall, not disappointed at all. Good food, good service. All good to go!

I lived in San Marcos when I attended Texas State almost 15 years ago. Back then I recall there only being one location. It's nice to see they've expanded. The food is still great for Tex Mex and just how I remembered it. Food: 4/5 It's classic Tex Mex. I do think $1 per taco was a bit much to sprinkle a little cheese on a taco. The carne asada was tender but a bit salty. The portions were good especially for the kids meal. We loved the chips and salsa. I could have done without the toppings in the Garcia's chile con queso. It really didn't make that much of a difference. Service: 5/5- Our server was fast, really fast. We were sat and the hostess took our drink order. Our server came by about five minutes later with our drinks. We knew what we wanted so he took all of our order at once. Our queso came out a few minutes later and our food within ten minutes of that. Everything was hot and as we'd ordered. Love this place for Tex Mex. The restaurant was clean. The staff took extra time to clean messes under tables before the next table sat down. That's not something I've seen restaurants do often. Great place!

Got my arroz con pollo fix while we were in town and it didn't disappoint, again. Good service, good food as always. Also, loved seeing the progression of renovations on the place. The bar area and server station looks great!

Back to a-ok. TLDR not fancy, budget friendly, best thing I ever ate at this location was their arroz con pollo. Called in an order for pickup as directed by their website. They didn't have any of the "new recipes" listed online today--I don't know if they're limited run or only at the original site downtown. The lady on the phone was kind and efficient, and told me which numbered to-go parking spot to use as well as a time estimate (15 min). I parked and waited, unsure if i was supposed to walk in or call but a friendly employee came out in less than two minutes with an order for the neighboring space. She checked my name and took my credit card, returning with receipts, my card, and my order. Upon my destination, I found they didn't include any napkins or flatware (and I had not specifically requested either) and all the items were correct. The guisada beef was nicely seasoned, the gravy was on the salty side. The beans were standard and their rice was really great today. Seasoned chicken in the sour cream enchiladas was tasty. The chips were nice and a sufficient serving, and the small guacamole was the very best part of the meal. Fresh taste and texture, beautiful color. The serving size of the chicken enchiladas was good. The beef could have been a little more generous, but given the whole meal was about $28 after tax/before tip, we can't expect a mountain of it. I think the location nearer the square has the edge on flavor but this spot has much easier parking and supplies the basics.

Garcia's has many locations now all over Central Texas and I think it's because the food is so good. This is a new location here in San Marcos and the local garage keeps it busy. Several beers on tap including dos Equis and Corona with Bud light and Miller lite for domestics. The fajitas are always a good go to but my favorite is the Mexican enchilada plate and the cheese enchiladas. Nice open spacer interior and not too loud. The staff is helpful and quick to get your food out.

Had breakfast on our way back to Austin. We're low carb but they subbed us regular beans rather than refried that was nice.

My wife had visited years ago, and a close friend had recently recommended it, so it seemed like a good opportunity to give it a try. The building itself is beautiful. We parked in the rear lot and entered through the bakery, which immediately caught our attention. There was an impressive variety of pastries on display, and the kids were quickly informed they could each pick one out later if they behaved. The restaurant also has several colorful walls and decorative displays that make for fun photo opportunities and selfies. We were seated at a large table toward the back near the restrooms. Service was friendly throughout the meal and reasonably attentive despite the restaurant being busy. To drink, I ordered the jalapeño prickly pear margarita, while my wife chose a peach, coconut, and strawberry margarita. Both had excellent flavor. My wife's drink was especially memorable--it tasted like a cross between a strawberry margarita, peach bellini, and piña colada. The only thing missing was a little more tequila, as both drinks leaned more toward the sweet side than the spirited side. The chips were slightly thicker than I typically prefer but still enjoyable, and the salsa selection was excellent with a pleasant level of heat. The kids ordered bean and cheese tacos from the children's menu, and the restaurant happily substituted fruit for rice without any upcharge, which we appreciated. For our entrees, my wife ordered the vegetarian enchiladas while I chose the fajitas. The fajitas were good overall, though the meat portion felt a bit light and seemed stretched by a generous amount of green peppers. The rice, however, was excellent and one of the better components of the meal. Before leaving, we visited the bakery. The kids enjoyed their donuts and cookie, while I opted for a guava empanada that turned out to be one of the highlights of the visit. Overall, Casa Maria impressed me more with its atmosphere, bakery, and creative drinks than with the food itself. It's a beautiful restaurant with a fun family-friendly vibe, a strong bakery program, and some excellent margarita flavors. I'd gladly stop back for the pastries and drinks--and if they ever decide to be a little more generous with the tequila, even better.

Showing up around 7pm on a Wednesday evening, I had my choice of seats, ranging from the bar, indoor, and outdoor. Typically, when dining alone, I head for the bar to save tables for groups. But fortunately they weren't very busy so I didn't feel bad taking one of the smaller tables. My server recommended their margheritas but I didn't want to drink alone haha..I would love to try it next time though! I started with the salsa sampler which came with tortilla chips and three different house made salsas. I couldn't stop eating it! I kept seeing reviews of the fish tacos and heard another table ordering it, so I decided to get that as well. The pico de gallo, aioli, and pickled onions in the description just got me. Admittedly, it was just ok. I was not a big fan of the fish tacos but to be truthful, I can't recall when I last had an amazing fish tacos. I probably should have just gotten the carne asada plate that I was initially eying. This just means I have to go back. I'm not in Texas often, but despite there being so many options and new places to try, I look forward to the opportunity to return to Balcon Comedor Y Bar.

Anyway, I came across this place and the pictures of the food looked amazing. Oh I should probably warn you right now.... If you were raised on "Tex-Mex" or you're a Texas snowflake with thin skin, please skip this part of the review until the end of my rant. With that out of the way. * Incoming Rant * Why is it that 90%+ of Mexican food in Texas is utter garbage? If you do a search on Yelp and look at the pictures of what barely passes for "Mexican Food" it looks like dog food. Compare Garcia's food and presentation to Balcón and let me know which you prefer. I mean seriously, most of the restaurants serve food that looks like it came from a 1980's microwave TV dinner! So many places use that weird yellow generic government cheese, the refried beans look like they came from a WWII can and almost everything is unseasoned ground beef! The closest I can usually find is cubed beef. Have you guys never heard of shredded beef? Depending on where you go they MIGHT shred the beef and use it in birria tacos. Here's a thought. Use it in OTHER things! Shredded beef enchiladas, tortas, chimichangas, burritos and for goodness sakes, USE SEASONING! In the past people traveled around the world solely for herbs and spices but for some reason restaurants in Texas hate using them. One more thing and I'm done. Look at the presentation of the dishes here. The food LOOKS GOOD! The food looks colorful, vibrant and tasty. Not like it was cobbled together by a cowboy on a ranch in the 1800s. See how they make use of Queso Fresco, radishes, guacamole, cabbage and other things to bring life to the dishes. I've been to places in Arizona, New Mexico and Southern California and they GET IT. Make food delicious and good looking and the people will come and come back. *sigh* ok, I'm done... * End of Rant * Now back to our regularly scheduled review... We ordered the Ensenada Fish Tacos, Carne Asada Fries, and the Surf & Turf Quesadilla. All 3 dishes were excellent! The fish was beer battered and not the Gorton's frozen fish sticks that I've found in many restaurants in the Mid-West. Disgusting. Also, it was a massive portion of fish which was probably the largest I've seen in a fish taco in a long time. The asada fries were amazing. Not only is that a hard to find dish in Texas they also used the really good crispy fries that are actually edible the next day. Most places use the cheap generic square fries (think fries that are usually sold with hot dogs or hamburgers at a carnival) that taste terrible the next day. Usually you'll eat everything but the fries if you have leftovers, but not here. Balcón went for the good seasoned fries. The quesadilla was really good too. Perfectly cooked shrimp and juicy carne asada. The one gripe I did have was the white and black checkerboard paper that was used under the food. That started to disintegrate very quickly and as I was cutting into my food I kept having to pull it out of the food. Small complaint and easily forgivable. I'm not a person who's worried much about ambiance. As long as someone isn't trying to stab me while I eat or the restaurant is located next to an outhouse I'm good. But seriously it's a cool place. I like the indoor/outdoor vibe with the two open garage doors. We ate on the inside next to the door which was really nice. Overall, it was a great experience. I pray that more restaurants follow Balcón and put emphasis on presentation, not using microwave grade food, all while doing it at a reasonable price. We will definitely be coming back, as we need to try more of the menu. I tip my hat to you owner of Balcón. You definitely stand out in a sea of bland, generic "Tex Mex" restaurants.

First, the lengua taco came out on warm corn tortillas, and the lemgua was tender and in sliced bite siced chunks. By itself, it was pretty good - with ANY of their salsas, even better. The wife had the barbacoa taco plate: barbacoa was all meat, great tasting but not greasy. I had the pork chop plate and I i must say, it's one of the most flavorful and juicy pork chops I've had.
