I've tried to like Cafe Guadalajara since it's the closest Mexican restaurant to me, but both times the food has been below average in my opinion. While the prices are reasonable, I have not been impressed by the flavor or quality of any items I've gotten. I would say in a pinch, you might find something good on their menu but overall, I'd pass. I ordered the Barbacoa Plate and found the meat very dry and stringy. We've eaten at Guadalajara several times before and the food and service have always been good but something has changed. I am allergic to pork so I scanned the menu for a non pork item. I ordered the shrimp nachos. The menu said they had shrimp, picodeguillo, and guacamole. When the nachos arrived I went to take a bite and notice there were refried beans on the nachos. I explained to the waiter that I'm allergic to pork and asked if the beans had lard. He gave me a confused look so I said that I didn't recall the menu listing beans and I needed to know if they had lard. His body language made it clear he was displeased but he went to ask... they did. He did not remove the plate. I said I can't eat them and needed to order something else. Again displeased look. He brought the menu and I showed him there were not supposed to be beans on the nachos as they were not listed. Whole time, plate is still there. I ordered chicken verde enchiladas- no beans and rice. I physically handed him the plate and said to let someone else eat them as I could not. He took the plate, went three booths over, to an empty one, and dropped the plate with a loud bang on the table. While all of this was going on, the manager and guys in the kitchen were looking at me with pissy looks. The waiter then grabbed a rolling cart and loudly went past our table to bus another one. He was slamming the dishes and flatware into the bus bin. The guys in the kitchen were snickering with each other and I told my husband I hope they weren't contaminating my food. My enchiladas came and I ate them. Then we had to wait and wait to get the waiter's attention so we could pay. It usually takes 30 minutes to an hour for my body to react to pork and now I'm home and I'm having stomach cramps and nausea. So looks like they contaminated my food with pork. Also, when the bill came, they charged us for the nachos. They just took customers who really liked the place and turned me and my family into people who will NEVER go back! Just skip this place. Cafe Guadalajara (CG) on FM 306 in the village of Hancock is in our regular rotation for Tex Mex when we're visiting Canyon Lake or staying all summer long. We love CG for a few reasons: Menu: There is something for everyone, including picky eaters who just want nuggets & fries. Authentic San Antonio-Style: If you're from Texas, you know that all Tex-Mex is not created equally. CG has all the classic menu items and they are all pretty good. Be sure to try all the salsas to find your favorite - ours is the creamy jalapeño. Lake view: CG is one of very few spots around Canyon Lake where you can sit on the porch and share a meal or drinks while watching the sunset over the water. To be fair, the porch is, ahem, rustic, but we're cool with it. The crazy barstools and sporadic road noise from 306 & the drive-thru mean that the porch doesn't get crowded. Drive-thru: Yes, even though this is a real sit-down restaurant, they offer a drive-thru option, which can be very nice when you are wet & sweaty from being on the lake all day, or it's early & you wanna pick up brunch in your PJs for the crew back at the house. Don't get it twisted, this is not a fast option and the team will need time to prepare your order. Most of the time, we call in our to-go order from home and drive over to pick up. The staff is always friendly and our order is always accurate. During a staycation trip to Canyon Lake this weekend, we were tired after a long day on the lake with not a lot open after 7:30 PM on a Monday. We decided to try the nearby Cafe Guadalajara. The menu looked awesome. We are pescatarian, so we were excited for so many seafood options. My partner wanted the mojarra frita, but when we called to order in advance for pick-up, it was sold out. They offered snapper instead (but for double the price). Instead, we ordered shrimp al modo de ajo. It was really bad. It was full of undercooked veggies and buttery broth with no flavor. I ordered the Mexican plate. I asked for the beef taco to be subbed for bean taco because I don't eat meet. The bean taco was amazing. But then the "cheese enchiladas" were covered in beef. I had to scrape off all the top, and everything tasted so much like beef I threw it away. It was disappointing because I said on the phone, "I don't eat meat, so can I sub the taco for bean taco?" Nothing online said the cheese enchiladas were smothered in beef. Lastly, the guacamole had no flavor or seasoning. I am not sure if we caught them on a bad night. Worst service, and they put gratuity for Table for 3 adults at 20%. So then I ask them to take off the charge, I m capable of tipping my waiter. suddenly in my next charge came out and when I checked over my charges they wanted to charge a credit card service fee charge that was not on the original charge. I sent my family to go pull out cash out general purpose but was completely ridiculous! How do you suddenly state we charge a fee to use a credit card but did not have it on my first credit card charge! Food was not bad but won't come back based on the service and response received.
