My biggest concern is the website made this office look like a real doctor's office specializing in…read moretreating obesity as a disease. I drove two hours round trip to get tested and possibly treated for sleep apnea, hormone disturbances, and binge eating disorder. This office does not do any of that. This is a diet center. They offer three programs -- a liquid fast consisting of 550 calories a day with weekly visits, a partial fast (two shakes a day plus one meal that follows their diet guidelines) with biweekly visits, and a monthly plan in which I would follow either a high protein low carb diet or a high fat low carb diet. The monthly option included an eating plan with lists of approved or prohibited foods. Carrots and fruit were on the list of prohibited foods. On carrots: about twenty years ago low glycemic index diets became overnight sensations. High glycemic index foods can trigger an insulin spike which prompts the body to store fat. Fortunately, someone realized that carrots are innocuous and showed that glycemic index did not tell the whole story, since some high glycemic index foods, like carrots, do not cause weight gain because no one ever eats enough carrots to gain weight. Trust me; I am an expert binge eater. So experts in the field began using glycemic load instead of glycemic index to design lists of foods that would optimize weight loss. I believe even glycemic load has fallen out of favor and been superseded by diets that advise eating real, whole foods in controlled portions. So my first piece of advice for this diet center is to learn about the difference between glycemic index and glycemic load. But that is actually beside the point. I cried on the way home, crushed that I cannot find help with a metabolism slowed by years of yo yo dieting. Why are there no doctors who treat obesity as a disease? Instead all bariatric doctors I have found want to slice up my insides, or put me on a liquid fast or outdated restrictive diet. I have lost hundreds of pounds three times. I know how to lose weight. I know a lot more than this doctor or the saleswoman who tried to talk me into their program and told me they took a BMI and low carb approach. A BMI approach? What? For anyone who does not know, including the saleswoman at this "obesity specialist" clinic, BMI (body mass index) regards how much of a person's body weight is fat vs muscle. It is not a diet. I know how to lose weight, but I have binge eating disorder and keep gaining it back. I wanted medical help with this. I would never recommend a liquid fast unless a person has an emergency medical situation that requires them to lose a lot of weight in a short amount of time, say in preparation for surgery. 550 calories of meal replacement shakes a day is not a sustainable diet. It would slow my metabolism further and leave me obsessed with food. This level of restriction has been identified as a CAUSE OF BINGE EATING DISORDER. I was not a binge eater until after a restrictive diet. How dare you use a medical degree to sell what is basically snake oil to desperate people? How dare you?
