This place is so cool. Birds in cages all around, little paths through gardens. We got to eat in a little gazebo. Even though it was 95 degrees out, it was shaded so it wasn't too bad. The food was delicious. We had the summer salad with fruit and chicken with a honey vinaigrette. Honestly it tasted like a dessert in salad form. If you like sweet salads like I do, you'll love this one! It was served with cinnamon coconut bread which was so moist and delicious. I really regret not taking some more to go. Had tortilla soul and turkey sandwhich, not as good as la fonda. Husband has tri tip burrito, they brought him a sandwhich instead so he got both. Tri tip was delicious. It was very busy on a Tuesday at noon. Reservations would be smart. Seemed the staff worked all the tables, we didn't have just one waiter. Waiting to be seated was hectic, you're suppose to sign in but there's nothing there to tell you that, so people were walking ahead of us in line and writing their name down and being called before us, so we had to say something. We went for the Sunday brunch buffet, I don't know that I ate $15 worth of food but it was pretty tasty. The outside seating atmosphere was cozy. I would choose this over a chain restraunt any day. Service could use some improvement, we only got one refill on coffee, had to get up and ask if we could get the buffet and get up to ask for the check, however everyone was freindly and apologetic. The Garden Cafe is a unique Yuma establishment. It's an outdoor restaurant so be prepared to sit in plastic chairs at tables with plastic table cloths, both which might have bird droppings on them. I would say "garden" is a loose term in describing the setting. While you are seated outside, it's not at all like sitting in a garden surrounded by flowers, but more like just sitting outside with some birds to look at. The menu could use some expanding. If you are not a fan of eggs, you are very limited on breakfast and brunch items. However, if you like tri-tip you are in luck as the menu features tri-tip in multiple sandwich forms as well as in a salad. They have dedicated a good portion of their menu to soup, but it's really just tortilla soup and the soup of the day. What does make this place worth a visit though is their cake, especially the chocolate cake. If you do come here, make a reservation if it's Sunday, and do get some cake. read more

The best part about this place is the atmosphere. A wonderful patio with shade, plenty of greenery and misting fans on warm days. The service was excellent and the food was pretty good. We were taken to this delightful spot by friends who winter in Yuma every year. What a treat! The hundred+ year old residence currently owned/managed by the sixth generation was fascinating. All the buildings are designated Heritage so only minimal exterior improvements are allowed. Terraced gardens at the back create numerous delightful dining spots. If you're skittish about dining outside this might not be the place for you...there are real trees with real leaves and lots of birds! I had heard so much about their tortilla soup that it was a 'must try' and was not disappointing. I had the full bowl which should only be attempted by the very hungry! VERY flavorful and not all that spicy, lots of cheese and perfectly-ripe avocado. Perhaps it could have used a tad more chicken and it might have been nice to have the actual tortillas added a tad later as they had sunk to the bottom but still retained some texture. Another teeny complaint was the cutlery. A large and hearty soup requires a good, deep, soup spoon. The proffered spoon was too small and had a very shallow bowl which prompted me to want to pick the bowl up and sip. (I didn't!) Along with the soup I had a half avocado sandwich. The 9 grain bread was fresh and very tasty, the avocado was perfectly ripe and the cream cheese and veggies were great....the only surprise was that the advertised sprouts seemed to have been lost in the mail! All in all an excellent experience and we will be back on our next visit to Yuma! read more

This hidden gem I had never heard of before. I happen to be with some friends that asked if I had ever eaten here I said no. It's only seasonal so check it out while you can. The tortilla soup is delicious and addicting. Granted, it's not authentic Mexican flavor, but it is still really tasty. I wish they were open year round, because it is such a great place for lunch. We stopped here on our way to Scottsdale after reading the rave reviews. The food was decent but the service was HORRENDOUS! Our food took over an hour after we ordered. I have never waited this long for breakfast. The attitude of the waitress was rude. She told us she had mentioned to us it would be a while when we ordered, she didn't. She said they make "everything from scratch so no preservatives" we had eggs and potatoes. Told us the bus boy told her we were very angry and slammed our hand on the table - DID NOT HAPPEN. She was put out every single time we asked about the food. I live in a small town with several "from scratch" restaurants, some literally picking organic from the garden, and never ever wait that long and the food is much better than the meal we consumed at The Garden Cafe. In a restaurant service is key and the waitress lacked that professional quality. We won't be back there. And only half of the restaurant was full. read more

This restaurant has a unique setting in Yuma, but it has some serious drawbacks. We've eaten there about 5 times in the past and the most recent was so horrible that we won't return. Went to their Sunday buffet. When arriving we were asked by three people if we had reservations in an accusatory tone. Since it was nearly empty we couldn't understand this nonsensical attitude. We were put two flights of stairs away from the buffet, despite there being only two other occupied tables on that level. Every dish was covered with flies. They had the food covered with cellophane, but naturally every time it was raised the flies had at everything. Most of the food could not be eaten by us, since we were quite aware of how much fly would be mixed up in it. And this was at the price of about $17 plus, each. read more

Went on a Sunday for brunch around 1pm. When we got there the place was more than halfway empty. When we asked to be seated the waitress asked if we had a reservation. We said no and didn't realize we may have needed one. She told us to hold and then spoke allowed to someone else "I don't know where we are going to put them?! They don't have a reservation.." A little weird to hear that just a few feet from us especially when the place was pretty much empty. Once we were seated after about 5 minutes we were seated right next to breakfast buffet. It looked delicious. They had Carne and chicken asada with tortillas and biscuits and gravy, eggs, bacon etc. Two people at our table got the buffet and then the other two ordered regular plates. When I finally got to the buffet they were out of biscuits and tortillas. And it took them about 20min to get more biscuits out. And then we found out they were completely out of tortillas so we didnt get any of those. Our waitress was great. Took some time to get us our drinks but other than that it was great. They charged us extra for a fountain lemonade refill... Overall the food was good and the atmosphere was quaint. Maybe when it gets a little more cooler we will revisit. read more

Enjoyed a wonderful lunch here. I ordered the big bowl of Tortilla Soup that comes with fresh bread. Yeah, a bit pricey at $11, but it was a BIG BOWL! Delicious and filling. Perfect for a break in sight seeing. My companions enjoyed the soup + 1/2 sandwich combo. Turkey Rice soup was loaded with fresh vegetables. We all enjoyed our meals. The service was excellent. Told by a shopkeeper that we would be lucky to get in at lunch time without a reservation. We were seated right away. Had to wait a bit for our food but drinks were kept full the whole time. The location is special, maybe worth the extra $ - down a little walk-way with shops in front-almost hidden - sitting there you forget that you are right downtown! We tourists from Michigan had been outside all day and enjoyed having lunch outside as well. Beware of the service personnel at the Garden Cafe. They bring coffee when tea has been ordered. Then they bring ice tea instead of hot. And that short overtly cheerful waitress with the duck's ass haircut, run from her. She kept referring to our party as "you guys!". When I told her that my wife or mother was not a guy she responded that that's the way she addresses people and that's the way it was going to stay. Then she brought the check when three people were still eating. And as we sat finishing our coffee and tea she had the nerve to tell she needed our table because she had more people she wanted to seat. Would not go back! I went today and experienced discrimination. Today as I walked in, I was greeted by a lady with blond short hair. She first walked up to my husband and I and there was a Caucasian couple behind us. She asked them if they had reservations; however, we were in front of them and my husband said yes we do. They sat us at our table for 2 , at the table next to us there was a Caucasian couple with a child , they had a table of 4, one of the chairs was used by the female to place her Loui Vitton purse. I asked the waiter for a chair so I could place my purse and the he ignored my request. As people from the table next to us left I asked the male if I could use the chair and he gave it to me. A couple of minutes passed by and I saw the same lady with blond hair I'm not sure if she was the manager tell a waitress that they were going to need that chair. She came to me I grabbed my purse and they prepared the tables and she said they had a reservation for four. They only placed three menus on the table and did not appear the fourth chair was needed. We finished our meal and the table remained unused. All I'm saying is I can't use a chair that wasn't needed, but if I was Caucasian I would have been ok, I brought it up to the waiter, and unfortunately they agreed with me and said I can't go against management orders. It saddened me , and even though soup is great I would never go back. read more

The food here is excellent. I have been here several times and the service was fine. However, this last time I went the service was terrible. We were greeted fairly promptly and brought waters but then not acknowledged again for another half an hour ,after which the food took forty five minutes to arrive . We requested our waitress several times and she seemed more interested in arguing with us and making excuses than acknowledging us or doing anything to help the situation . A simple apology with out having to argue for it would have gone a long way. The manager was dismissive when we inquired about our food almost to the point of rudeness. When we finally had to ask a second time, the manager would not even come out to speak to us. The orders we were waiting on were scrambled eggs... So they should not have taken forty five minutes to prepare. I have never not left a tip before , but this merited a first. As much as I love the quiche , I won't be returning.
